ਲਖਿ ਨਾਰਿ ਖਰੀ ॥
lakh naar kharee |

(He saw a) woman standing

ਰਸ ਰੀਤਿ ਭਰੀ ॥੨੬॥
ras reet bharee |26|

He went there and there was none with him, he saw a very charming woman there.26.

ਅਤਿ ਸੋਭਤ ਹੈ ॥
at sobhat hai |

(She) is very beautiful.

ਲਖਿ ਲੋਭਤ ਹੈ ॥
lakh lobhat hai |

Allures the beholder.

ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਪੇਖਿ ਜਬੈ ॥
nrip pekh jabai |

When the king saw (him),

ਚਿਤਿ ਚਉਕ ਤਬੈ ॥੨੭॥
chit chauk tabai |27|

Her glory coveted his mind, when the king saw her, his mind was startled.27.

ਇਹ ਕਉਨ ਜਈ ॥
eih kaun jee |

(He thought) whose daughter is this.

ਜਨੁ ਰੂਪ ਮਈ ॥
jan roop mee |

(It appears) as if it were form.

ਛਬਿ ਦੇਖਿ ਛਕ੍ਯੋ ॥
chhab dekh chhakayo |

He became happy after seeing (her) image

ਚਿਤ ਚਾਇ ਚਕ੍ਰਯੋ ॥੨੮॥
chit chaae chakrayo |28|

The king though as to whose daughter that beautiful woman was, seeing here beauty the king saw allured and his mind fell in love with her.28.

ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਬਾਹ ਗਹੀ ॥
nrip baah gahee |

The king took hold of (her) arm,

ਤ੍ਰੀਅ ਮੋਨ ਰਹੀ ॥
treea mon rahee |

The woman remained silent.

ਰਸ ਰੀਤਿ ਰਚ੍ਯੋ ॥
ras reet rachayo |

(Both) fell in love

ਦੁਹੂੰ ਮੈਨ ਮਚ੍ਯੋ ॥੨੯॥
duhoon main machayo |29|

The king caught her arm and that woman kept silent, absorded and dyed with love, both became lustful.29.

ਬਹੁ ਭਾਤਿ ਭਜੀ ॥
bahu bhaat bhajee |

(The king indulged that woman) in a great way

ਨਿਸ ਲੌ ਨ ਤਜੀ ॥
nis lau na tajee |

And did not leave (him) till night.

ਦੋਊ ਰੀਝਿ ਰਹੇ ॥
doaoo reejh rahe |

Both were angry (at each other).

ਨਹੀ ਜਾਤ ਕਹੇ ॥੩੦॥
nahee jaat kahe |30|

The king enjoyed her in various ways till night both of them felt so much pleased with each other that is the not possible for me to narrate.30.

ਰਸ ਰੀਤਿ ਰਚ੍ਯੋ ॥
ras reet rachayo |

(They) absorbed in the ritual of Prem Rasa

ਕਲ ਕੇਲ ਮਚ੍ਯੋ ॥
kal kel machayo |

And performed well.

ਅਮਿਤਾਸਨ ਦੇ ॥
amitaasan de |

(The king) gave Amit Asan

ਸੁਖ ਰਾਸਨ ਸੇ ॥੩੧॥
sukh raasan se |31|

Being absorbed and dyed with love, they kept engrossed in sexual enjoinment many types of postures.31.

ਲਲਤਾਸਨ ਲੈ ॥
lalataasan lai |

He took (the woman) in a beautiful seat.

ਬਿਬਧਾਸਨ ਕੈ ॥
bibadhaasan kai |

(Then) performed various postures.

ਲਲਨਾ ਰੁ ਲਲਾ ॥
lalanaa ru lalaa |

Lalna (Priya) and Lala (Priya).

ਕਰਿ ਕਾਮ ਕਲਾ ॥੩੨॥
kar kaam kalaa |32|

They enjoyment the relish of various types of postures and in the way, both of them established their sexual sport.32.

ਕਰਿ ਕੇਲ ਉਠੀ ॥
kar kel utthee |

(with King Shakuntala) of the eyes

ਮਧਿ ਪਰਨ ਕੁਟੀ ॥
madh paran kuttee |

Got up after intercourse in the coolie.

ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਜਾਤ ਭਯੋ ॥
nrip jaat bhayo |

The king left there.

ਤਿਹ ਗਰਭ ਰਹਿਯੋ ॥੩੩॥
tih garabh rahiyo |33|

After that woman having enjoyed the sexual sport, came out of that cottage, the king went away and Shakuntala became pregnant.33.

ਦਿਨ ਕੈ ਕੁ ਗਏ ॥
din kai ku ge |

Some time passed

ਤਿਨਿ ਭੂਰ ਜਏ ॥
tin bhoor je |

And she gave birth to a child ('Bhur').

ਤਨਿ ਕਉਚ ਧਰੇ ॥
tan kauch dhare |

(That child) was wearing armor on his body

ਸਸਿ ਸੋਭ ਹਰੇ ॥੩੪॥
sas sobh hare |34|

Many days passed, when she gave birth to a child, who was wearing armour on his body and was also the abductor of moon’s beauty.34.

ਜਨੁ ਜ੍ਵਾਲ ਦਵਾ ॥
jan jvaal davaa |

(It appears) as if (the flame of) a forest fire.

ਅਸ ਤੇਜ ਭਵਾ ॥
as tej bhavaa |

Such was (his) speeding up.

ਰਿਖਿ ਜੌਨ ਪਿਖੈ ॥
rikh jauan pikhai |

Whichever sage saw him,

ਚਿਤ ਚਉਕ ਚਕੈ ॥੩੫॥
chit chauk chakai |35|

His splendour was like the forest-fire, whosoever saw him, he was wonder-struck.35.

ਸਿਸੁ ਸ੍ਰਯਾਨ ਭਯੋ ॥
sis srayaan bhayo |

When the child became mature.

ਕਰਿ ਸੰਗ ਲਯੋ ॥
kar sang layo |

(Then Shakuntala took her).

ਚਲਿ ਆਵ ਤਹਾ ॥
chal aav tahaa |

(Then) she went there

ਤਿਹ ਤਾਤ ਜਹਾ ॥੩੬॥
tih taat jahaa |36|

When the child grew a bit older, she (the mother) took him there where his father was.36.

ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਦੇਖਿ ਜਬੈ ॥
nrip dekh jabai |

When the king saw (them),

ਕਰਿ ਲਾਜ ਤਬੈ ॥
kar laaj tabai |

Then experienced great shame.

ਯਹ ਮੋ ਨ ਸੂਅੰ ॥
yah mo na sooan |

(And said) This is not my son.

ਤ੍ਰੀਅ ਕੌਨ ਤੂਅੰ ॥੩੭॥
treea kauan tooan |37|

When the king saw her, he hesitated a little and asked her ”O” woman, who are you and who is this boy?”37.

ਤ੍ਰੀਯੋ ਬਾਚ ਰਾਜਾ ਪ੍ਰਤਿ ॥
treeyo baach raajaa prat |

Speech of the woman addressed to the king:

ਹਰਿ ਬੋਲ ਮਨਾ ਛੰਦ ॥
har bol manaa chhand |

HARIBOLMANA STANZA

ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਨਾਰਿ ਸੁਈ ॥
nrip naar suee |

O Rajan! I am the same woman

ਤੁਮ ਜੌਨ ਭਜੀ ॥
tum jauan bhajee |

with whom you indulged

ਮਧਿ ਪਰਨ ਕੁਟੀ ॥
madh paran kuttee |

In the armpits

ਤਹ ਕੇਲ ਠਟੀ ॥੩੮॥
tah kel tthattee |38|

“O king! I am the same woman, with whom you had had sexual enjoyment in the forest-cottage.38.

ਤਬ ਬਾਚ ਦੀਯੋ ॥
tab baach deeyo |

Then (you) promised,

ਅਬ ਭੂਲਿ ਗਯੋ ॥
ab bhool gayo |

Now you are forgotten.

ਤਿਸ ਚਿਤ ਕਰੋ ॥
tis chit karo |

Remember that (event).

ਮੁਹਿ ਰਾਜ ਬਰੋ ॥੩੯॥
muhi raaj baro |39|

“Then you had given your word now you have forgotten, O king! remember that promise and now own me.39.

ਤਬ ਕਾਹਿ ਭਜੋ ॥
tab kaeh bhajo |

Then why indulged,

ਅਬ ਮੋਹਿ ਤਜੋ ॥
ab mohi tajo |

If I had to give up now.

ਇਹ ਪੂਤ ਤੁਅੰ ॥
eih poot tuan |

this is your son

ਸੁਨੁ ਸਾਚ ਨ੍ਰਿਪੰ ॥੪੦॥
sun saach nripan |40|

“If now you are forsaking me, then why did you own me at that time? O king! I am saying the truth that he is your son.40.

ਨਹਿ ਸ੍ਰਾਪ ਤੁਝੈ ॥
neh sraap tujhai |

Otherwise (I will) curse you.

ਭਜ ਕੈਬ ਮੁਝੈ ॥
bhaj kaib mujhai |

by indulging me,

ਅਬ ਤੋ ਨ ਤਜੋ ॥
ab to na tajo |

Don't give up now

ਨਹਿ ਲਾਜ ਲਜੋ ॥੪੧॥
neh laaj lajo |41|

“If you will not wed me, then I shall curse you, therefore now do not forsake me and do not feel shy.”41.

ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਬਾਚ ਤ੍ਰੀਯਾ ਸੋ ॥
nrip baach treeyaa so |

Speech of the king addressed to the woman

ਕੋਈ ਚਿਨ ਬਤਾਉ ॥
koee chin bataau |

give a sign

ਕਿਤੋ ਬਾਤ ਦਿਖਾਉ ॥
kito baat dikhaau |

(or) show something clearly.

ਹਉ ਯੌ ਨ ਭਜੋ ॥
hau yau na bhajo |

don't run like that

ਨਹਿ ਨਾਰਿ ਲਜੋ ॥੪੨॥
neh naar lajo |42|

You may tell me some sign or saying, otherwise I shall not wed You; O woman! Do not forsake your shyness 42.

ਇਕ ਮੁਦ੍ਰਕ ਲੈ ॥
eik mudrak lai |

The woman took a ring

ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਕੈ ਕਰਿ ਦੈ ॥
nrip kai kar dai |

Given into the hands of the king

ਇਹ ਦੇਖਿ ਭਲੈ ॥
eih dekh bhalai |

(And said-) Look at it carefully.
