ਜੇ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਸਾਮੁਹੇ ਆਇ ਭਿਰੇ ਅਰਿ ਬਾਨਨ ਸੋ ਸੋਈ ਮਾਰਿ ਲਏ ਹੈ ॥
je nrip saamuhe aae bhire ar baanan so soee maar le hai |All the enemies who came in front of the king, he knocked them down with his arrows
ਕੇਤਕਿ ਜੋਰਿ ਭਿਰੇ ਹਠਿ ਕੈ ਕਿਤਨੇ ਰਨ ਕੋ ਲਖਿ ਭਾਜਿ ਗਏ ਹੈ ॥
ketak jor bhire hatth kai kitane ran ko lakh bhaaj ge hai |There were many who fought persistently, but there were also many who ran away
ਕੇਤਕਿ ਹੋਇ ਇਕਤ੍ਰ ਰਹੇ ਜਸੁ ਤਾ ਛਬਿ ਕੋ ਕਬਿ ਚੀਨ ਲਏ ਹੈ ॥
ketak hoe ikatr rahe jas taa chhab ko kab cheen le hai |How many (in fear) are gathered together standing still, their image is understood by the poet thus,
ਮਾਨਹੁ ਆਗ ਲਗੀ ਬਨ ਮੈ ਮਦਮਤ ਕਰੀ ਇਕ ਠਉਰ ਭਏ ਹੈ ॥੧੪੨੮॥
maanahu aag lagee ban mai madamat karee ik tthaur bhe hai |1428|Many kings had gathered at one place and appeared like the intoxicated elephant gathered together at one place in the event of the forest-fire.1428.
ਬੀਰ ਘਨੇ ਰਨ ਮਾਝ ਹਨੇ ਮਨ ਮੈ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਰੰਚਕ ਕੋਪ ਭਰਿਓ ਹੈ ॥
beer ghane ran maajh hane man mai nrip ranchak kop bhario hai |Killing many warriors in the battlefield, the king Kharag Singh became somewhat furious
ਬਾਜ ਕਰੀ ਰਥ ਕਾਟਿ ਦਏ ਜਬ ਹੀ ਕਰ ਮੈ ਕਰਵਾਰ ਧਰਿਓ ਹੈ ॥
baaj karee rath kaatt de jab hee kar mai karavaar dhario hai |As soon as he caught hold of the sword he knocked down visibly many elephants, horses and chariots
ਪੇਖ ਕੈ ਸਤ੍ਰ ਇਕਤ੍ਰ ਭਏ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਮਾਰਬੇ ਕੋ ਤਿਨ ਮੰਤ੍ਰ ਕਰਿਓ ਹੈ ॥
pekh kai satr ikatr bhe nrip maarabe ko tin mantr kario hai |Seeing him the enemies gathered and began to think of killing him
ਕੇਹਰਿ ਕੋ ਬਧ ਜਿਉ ਚਿਤਵੈ ਮ੍ਰਿਗ ਸੋ ਤੋ ਬ੍ਰਿਥਾ ਕਬਹੂੰ ਨ ਡਰਿਓ ਹੈ ॥੧੪੨੯॥
kehar ko badh jiau chitavai mrig so to brithaa kabahoon na ddario hai |1429|It appeared like the deer gathered together in order to kill the lion and the lion remained standing fearlessly.1429.
ਭੂਪ ਬਲੀ ਬਹੁਰੋ ਰਿਸ ਕੈ ਜਬ ਹਾਥਨ ਮੈ ਹਥਿਯਾਰ ਗਹੇ ਹੈ ॥
bhoop balee bahuro ris kai jab haathan mai hathiyaar gahe hai |The strong king (Kharag Singh) has again got angry and has taken weapons in his hands.
ਸੂਰ ਹਨੇ ਬਲਬੰਡ ਘਨੇ ਕਬਿ ਰਾਮ ਭਨੈ ਚਿਤ ਮੈ ਜੁ ਚਹੇ ਹੈ ॥
soor hane balabandd ghane kab raam bhanai chit mai ju chahe hai |When the mighty king, in his anger, taking his weapons in his hand, killed the warriors according to his heart’s desire
ਸੀਸ ਪਰੇ ਕਟਿ ਬੀਰਨ ਕੇ ਧਰਨੀ ਖੜਗੇਸ ਸੁ ਸੀਸ ਛਹੇ ਹੈ ॥
sees pare katt beeran ke dharanee kharrages su sees chhahe hai |The severed heads of the warriors are lying on the ground which were destroyed by Kharag Singh.
ਮਾਨਹੁ ਸ੍ਰਉਨ ਸਰੋਵਰ ਮੈ ਸਿਰ ਸਤ੍ਰਨ ਕੰਜ ਸੇ ਮੂੰਦ ਰਹੇ ਹੈ ॥੧੪੩੦॥
maanahu sraun sarovar mai sir satran kanj se moond rahe hai |1430|The heads of the warriors are being torn with the blows of Kharag Singh like the lotus-heats of the enemy torn in the tank of blood.1430.
ਦੋਹਰਾ ॥
doharaa |DOHRA
ਤਕਿ ਝੂਝ ਸਿੰਘ ਕੋ ਖੜਗ ਸੀ ਖੜਗ ਲੀਓ ਕਰਿ ਕੋਪ ॥
tak jhoojh singh ko kharrag see kharrag leeo kar kop |(Then) on seeing Jhujh Singh, Kharag Singh got angry and held the sword in his hand.
ਹਨਿਓ ਤਬੈ ਸਿਰ ਸਤ੍ਰ ਕੋ ਜਨੁ ਦੀਨੀ ਅਸਿ ਓਪ ॥੧੪੩੧॥
hanio tabai sir satr ko jan deenee as op |1431|Seeing the dagger of Jujhan Singh, Kharag Singh took his sword in his hand and like lightning, he struck it on the head of the enemy and killed him.1431.
ਸਵੈਯਾ ॥

ਪੁਨਿ ਸਿੰਘ ਜੁਝਾਰ ਮਹਾ ਰਨ ਮੈ ਲਰਿ ਕੈ ਮਰਿ ਕੈ ਸੁਰ ਲੋਕਿ ਬਿਹਾਰਿਓ ॥
pun singh jujhaar mahaa ran mai lar kai mar kai sur lok bihaario |Then Jujhar Singh (he) has gone to Dev Lok (heaven) after fighting in a great war and getting dead.
ਸੈਨ ਜਿਤੋ ਤਿਹ ਸੰਗ ਹੁਤੋ ਤਬ ਹੀ ਅਸਿ ਲੈ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਮਾਰਿ ਬਿਦਾਰਿਓ ॥
sain jito tih sang huto tab hee as lai nrip maar bidaario |In this way in this great war, Jujhar Singh also, went to heaven while fighting and the army which was with him, the king (Kharag Singh) was torn into fragments
ਜੇਤੇ ਰਹੇ ਸੁ ਭਜੇ ਰਨ ਤੇ ਕਿਨਹੂੰ ਨਹੀ ਲਾਜ ਕੀ ਓਰਿ ਨਿਹਾਰਿਓ ॥
jete rahe su bhaje ran te kinahoon nahee laaj kee or nihaario |Those who survived, without caring for their honour and custom fled away
ਮਾਨਹੁ ਦੰਡ ਲੀਏ ਕਰ ਮੈ ਜਮ ਕੇ ਸਮ ਭੂਪ ਮਹਾ ਅਸਿ ਧਾਰਿਓ ॥੧੪੩੨॥
maanahu dandd lee kar mai jam ke sam bhoop mahaa as dhaario |1432|They saw in the king Kharag Singh Yama, carrying the death-sentence in his hand.1432.
ਦੋਹਰਾ ॥
doharaa |DOHRA
ਖੜਗ ਸਿੰਘ ਸਰੁ ਧਨੁ ਗਹਿਓ ਕਿਨਹੂ ਰਹਿਯੋ ਨ ਧੀਰ ॥
kharrag singh sar dhan gahio kinahoo rahiyo na dheer |(When) Kharag Singh took hold of the bow and arrow (then) no one had patience.
ਚਲੇ ਤਿਆਗ ਕੈ ਰਨ ਰਥੀ ਮਹਾਰਥੀ ਬਲਬੀਰ ॥੧੪੩੩॥
chale tiaag kai ran rathee mahaarathee balabeer |1433|When Kharag Singh caught hold of his bow and arrows in his hands then all of them lost patience and all the chieftains and mighty warriors left the war-arena.1433.
ਜਬ ਭਾਜੀ ਜਾਦਵ ਚਮੂੰ ਕ੍ਰਿਸਨ ਬਿਲੋਕੀ ਨੈਨਿ ॥
jab bhaajee jaadav chamoon krisan bilokee nain |When Krishna saw the fleeing Yadav army with his eyes
ਸਾਤਕਿ ਸਿਉ ਹਰਿ ਯੌ ਕਹਿਓ ਤੁਮ ਧਾਵਹੁ ਲੈ ਸੈਨ ॥੧੪੩੪॥
saatak siau har yau kahio tum dhaavahu lai sain |1434|When Krishna saw the Yadava army running away, then calling Satyak towards him, he said, “Go with your army.”1434.
ਸਵੈਯਾ ॥
savaiyaa |SWAYYA
ਸਾਤਕਿ ਅਉ ਬਰਮਾਕ੍ਰਿਤ ਊਧਵ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਮੁਸਲੀ ਕਰ ਮੈ ਹਲੁ ਲੈ ॥
saatak aau baramaakrit aoodhav sree musalee kar mai hal lai |Sataka and Barmakrita, Udhava and Balarama (went) with plows in hand.
ਬਸੁਦੇਵ ਤੇ ਆਦਿਕ ਬੀਰ ਜਿਤੇ ਤਿਹ ਆਗੇ ਕੀਯੋ ਬਲਿ ਕਉ ਦਲੁ ਦੈ ॥
basudev te aadik beer jite tih aage keeyo bal kau dal dai |He sent all his great warriors including Satyak, Krat Verma, Udhava, Balram, Vasudev etc. to the front,
ਸਬ ਹੂੰ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਊਪਰਿ ਬਾਨਨ ਬ੍ਰਿਸਟ ਕਰੀ ਮਨ ਮੈ ਤਕਿ ਕੇ ਖਲੁ ਛੈ ॥
sab hoon nrip aoopar baanan brisatt karee man mai tak ke khal chhai |With the idea of destroying (him) in mind, everyone has showered arrows on the king (Kharag Singh).
ਸੁਰਰਾਜ ਪਠੇ ਗਿਰਿ ਗੋਧਨ ਪੈ ਰਿਸਿ ਮੇਘ ਮਨੋ ਬਰਖੈ ਬਲੁ ਕੈ ॥੧੪੩੫॥
suraraaj patthe gir godhan pai ris megh mano barakhai bal kai |1435|And they all showed so many arrows in order to destroy Kharag Singh like powerful clouds sent by Indra for bursting into rain on the Goverdhan mountain.1435.
ਸਰ ਜਾਲ ਕਰਾਲ ਸਬੈ ਸਹਿ ਕੈ ਗਹਿ ਕੈ ਬਹੁਰੋ ਧਨੁ ਬਾਨ ਚਲਾਏ ॥
sar jaal karaal sabai seh kai geh kai bahuro dhan baan chalaae |The king enduring the terrible rain of arrows also discharged arrows from his side
ਬਾਜ ਕਰੇ ਸਭਹੂੰਨ ਕੇ ਘਾਇਲ ਸੂਤ ਸਬੈ ਤਿਨ ਕੇ ਰਨਿ ਘਾਏ ॥
baaj kare sabhahoon ke ghaaeil soot sabai tin ke ran ghaae |He wounded the horse of all the kings and killed all their charioteers
ਪੈਦਲ ਕੇ ਦਲ ਮਾਝਿ ਪਰਿਓ ਤੇਈ ਬਾਨਨ ਸੋ ਜਮੁਲੋਕਿ ਪਠਾਏ ॥
paidal ke dal maajh pario teee baanan so jamulok patthaae |After that he jumped into the forces on foot and began to send the warriors to the abode of Yama
ਸ੍ਯੰਦਨ ਕਾਟਿ ਦਯੋ ਬਹੁਰੋ ਸਭ ਹ੍ਵੈ ਬਿਰਥੀ ਜਦੁਬੰਸ ਪਰਾਏ ॥੧੪੩੬॥
sayandan kaatt dayo bahuro sabh hvai birathee jadubans paraae |1436|He shattered the chariots of many and deprived of their chariots, the Yadavas ran away.1436.
ਕਾਹੇ ਕਉ ਭਜਤ ਹੋ ਰਨ ਤੇ ਬਲਿ ਜੁਧ ਸਮੋ ਪੁਨਿ ਐਸੇ ਨ ਪੈ ਹੈ ॥
kaahe kau bhajat ho ran te bal judh samo pun aaise na pai hai |O Balaram! Why do you run away from the battlefield? This type of war will not be possible again.
ਸਾਤਕਿ ਸੋ ਖੜਗੇਸ ਕਹਿਓ ਅਬ ਭਾਜਹੁ ਤੈ ਕਛੁ ਲਾਜ ਰਹੈ ਹੈ ॥
saatak so kharrages kahio ab bhaajahu tai kachh laaj rahai hai |“Why are you running away from the battlefield? You will not have such opportunity of war again.” Kharag Singh said to Satyak, “keep the war-tradition in your mind and do not run away,
ਜਉ ਕਹੂੰ ਅਉਰ ਸਮਾਜ ਮੈ ਜਾਇ ਹੋ ਸੋ ਵਹੁ ਕਾਇਰ ਰਾਜ ਵਹੈ ਹੈ ॥
jau kahoon aaur samaaj mai jaae ho so vahu kaaeir raaj vahai hai |If you go to another society, it will be a state-society of cowards.
ਤਾ ਤੇ ਬਿਚਾਰ ਕੈ ਆਨਿ ਭਿਰੋ ਕਿਨ ਭਾਜ ਕੈ ਕਾ ਮੁਖੁ ਲੈ ਘਰਿ ਜੈ ਹੈ ॥੧੪੩੭॥
taa te bichaar kai aan bhiro kin bhaaj kai kaa mukh lai ghar jai hai |1437|Because when you visit some society, the people will say that the king of the cowards is the same, therefore consider it and fight with me, because on running away to your home, how you will show your face there?”1437.
ਯੌ ਸੁਨਿ ਸੂਰ ਨ ਕੋਊ ਫਿਰਿਯੋ ਰਿਸ ਕੈ ਅਰਿ ਕੈ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਪਾਛੈ ਧਯੋ ਹੈ ॥
yau sun soor na koaoo firiyo ris kai ar kai nrip paachhai dhayo hai |Hearing these words, none of the warriors came back
ਜਾਦਵ ਭਾਜਤ ਜੈਸੇ ਅਜਾ ਖੜਗੇਸ ਮਨੋ ਮ੍ਰਿਗਰਾਜ ਭਯੋ ਹੈ ॥
jaadav bhaajat jaise ajaa kharrages mano mrigaraaj bhayo hai |Then the king, in rage, followed the enemy, the Yadavas were running away like goats and Kharag Singh seems like a lion
ਧਾਇ ਮਿਲਿਓ ਮੁਸਲੀਧਰ ਕੋ ਤਨਿ ਕੰਠ ਬਿਖੈ ਧਨੁ ਡਾਰ ਲਯੋ ਹੈ ॥
dhaae milio musaleedhar ko tan kantth bikhai dhan ddaar layo hai |The king ran and met Balram and put his bow in his neck
ਤਉ ਹਸਿ ਕੈ ਅਪਨੇ ਬਸ ਕੈ ਬਲਦੇਵਹਿ ਕਉ ਤਬ ਛਾਡਿ ਦਯੋ ਹੈ ॥੧੪੩੮॥
tau has kai apane bas kai baladeveh kau tab chhaadd dayo hai |1438|Then laughingly he subdued Balram but subsequently let him go.1438.
ਦੋਹਰਾ ॥

ਜਬ ਸਬ ਹੀ ਭਟ ਭਾਜ ਕੈ ਗਏ ਸਰਨਿ ਬ੍ਰਿਜ ਰਾਇ ॥
jab sab hee bhatt bhaaj kai ge saran brij raae |When all the warriors fled and went to the refuge of Sri Krishna,
ਤਬ ਜਦੁਪਤਿ ਸਬ ਜਾਦਵਨ ਕੀਨੋ ਏਕ ਉਪਾਇ ॥੧੪੩੯॥
tab jadupat sab jaadavan keeno ek upaae |1439|When all the warriors came before Krishna after running away, then Krishna and all the other Yadavas together devised a remedy.1439.
ਸਵੈਯਾ ॥

ਘੇਰਹਿ ਯਾਹਿ ਸਬੈ ਮਿਲਿ ਕੈ ਹਮ ਐਸੇ ਬਿਚਾਰਿ ਸਬੈ ਭਟ ਧਾਏ ॥
ghereh yaeh sabai mil kai ham aaise bichaar sabai bhatt dhaae |“Let all of us besiege him,” thinking like this they all marched forward
ਆਗੇ ਕੀਓ ਬ੍ਰਿਜਭੂਖਨ ਕਉ ਸਬ ਪਾਛੇ ਭਏ ਮਨ ਕੋਪੁ ਬਢਾਏ ॥
aage keeo brijabhookhan kau sab paachhe bhe man kop badtaae |They placed Krishna in front and they all followed him in rage
