ਬਾਧ ਨਿਖੰਗ ਚਲੇ ਕਟਿ ਸੌ ਕਹਿ ਭ੍ਰਾਤ ਈਹਾ ਕਰਿਜੈ ਰਖਵਾਰੀ ॥੩੫੩॥

baadh nikhang chale katt sau keh bhraat eehaa karijai rakhavaaree |353|

He tied his quiver and left for bringing the golden deer, leaving behind Lakshman for Sita’s protection.353.

ਓਟ ਥਕਯੋ ਕਰਿ ਕੋਟਿ ਨਿਸਾਚਰ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਰਘੁਬੀਰ ਨਿਦਾਨ ਸੰਘਾਰਯੋ ॥

ott thakayo kar kott nisaachar sree raghubeer nidaan sanghaarayo |

The demon Marich tried to put Ram in uncertainty by running away at a high speed, but ultimately he was tired and Ram killed him.

ਹੇ ਲਹੁ ਬੀਰ ਉਬਾਰ ਲੈ ਮੋਕਹ ਯੌ ਕਹਿ ਕੈ ਪੁਨਿ ਰਾਮ ਪੁਕਾਰਯੋ ॥

he lahu beer ubaar lai mokah yau keh kai pun raam pukaarayo |

But at the time of death he shouted loudly in the voice of Ram, “O Brother, save me.”

ਜਾਨਕੀ ਬੋਲ ਕੁਬੋਲ ਸੁਨਯੋ ਤਬ ਹੀ ਤਿਹ ਓਰ ਸੁਮਿਤ੍ਰ ਪਠਾਯੋ ॥

jaanakee bol kubol sunayo tab hee tih or sumitr patthaayo |

When Sita heard this frightening cry, she sent the mighty Lakshman to that side,

ਰੇਖ ਕਮਾਨ ਕੀ ਕਾਢ ਮਹਾਬਲ ਜਾਤ ਭਏ ਇਤ ਰਾਵਨ ਆਯੋ ॥੩੫੪॥

rekh kamaan kee kaadt mahaabal jaat bhe it raavan aayo |354|

Who before leaving drew a line there and then Ravana came in.354.

ਭੇਖ ਅਲੇਖ ਉਚਾਰ ਕੈ ਰਾਵਣ ਜਾਤ ਭਏ ਸੀਅ ਕੇ ਢਿਗ ਯੌ ॥

bhekh alekh uchaar kai raavan jaat bhe seea ke dtig yau |

Wearing the garb of a Yogi and uttering the traditional invocation for alms, Ravan went near Sita,

ਅਵਿਲੋਕ ਧਨੀ ਧਨਵਾਨ ਬਡੋ ਤਿਹ ਜਾਇ ਮਿਲੈ ਮਗ ਮੋ ਠਗ ਜਯੋ ॥

avilok dhanee dhanavaan baddo tih jaae milai mag mo tthag jayo |

Like a thug visiting a wealthy person and said,

ਕਛੁ ਦੇਹੁ ਭਿਛਾ ਮ੍ਰਿਗ ਨੈਨ ਹਮੈ ਇਹ ਰੇਖ ਮਿਟਾਇ ਹਮੈ ਅਬ ਹੀ ॥

kachh dehu bhichhaa mrig nain hamai ih rekh mittaae hamai ab hee |

“O doe-eyed, cross this line and give me some alms,”

ਬਿਨੁ ਰੇਖ ਭਈ ਅਵਿਲੋਕ ਲਈ ਹਰਿ ਸੀਅ ਉਡਯੋ ਨਭਿ ਕਉ ਤਬ ਹੀ ॥੩੫੫॥

bin rekh bhee avilok lee har seea uddayo nabh kau tab hee |355|

And when Ravan saw Sita crossing the line, he seized her and began to fly towards the sky.355.

ਇਤਿ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਬਚਿਤ੍ਰ ਨਾਟਕ ਰਾਮ ਵਤਾਰ ਕਥਾ ਸੀਤਾ ਹਰਨ ਧਿਆਇ ਸਮਾਪਤਮ ॥

eit sree bachitr naattak raam vataar kathaa seetaa haran dhiaae samaapatam |

End of the chapter entitled ‘Abduction of Sita’ in Ramavtar in BACHITTAR NATAK.

ਅਥ ਸੀਤਾ ਖੋਜਬੋ ਕਥਨੰ ॥

ath seetaa khojabo kathanan |

Now begin the description about the search for Sita :

ਤੋਟਕ ਛੰਦ ॥

TOTAK STANZA

ਰਘੁਨਾਥ ਹਰੀ ਸੀਅ ਹੇਰ ਮਨੰ ॥

raghunaath haree seea her manan |

Sri Ram (when) saw in his mind that Sita had become a deer,

ਗਹਿ ਬਾਨ ਸਿਲਾ ਸਿਤ ਸਜਿ ਧਨੰ ॥

geh baan silaa sit saj dhanan |

When Ram visualized in his mind about the abduction of Sita, he caught hold of his bow and arrows in his hand and sat down on a white rock.

ਚਹੂੰ ਓਰ ਸੁਧਾਰ ਨਿਹਾਰ ਫਿਰੇ ॥

chahoon or sudhaar nihaar fire |

And looked well on all four sides.

ਛਿਤ ਊਪਰ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਰਘੁਰਾਜ ਗਿਰੇ ॥੩੫੬॥

chhit aoopar sree raghuraaj gire |356|

He saw once again on all the four sides, but ultimately he fell down on the earth in disappontment.356.

ਲਘੁ ਬੀਰ ਉਠਾਇ ਸੁ ਅੰਕ ਭਰੇ ॥

lagh beer utthaae su ank bhare |

The younger brother (Lachman) raised (him) in a hug

ਮੁਖ ਪੋਛ ਤਬੈ ਬਚਨਾ ਉਚਰੇ ॥

mukh pochh tabai bachanaa uchare |

His younger brother clasped him and raised him and said while cleansing his face :

ਕਸ ਅਧੀਰ ਪਰੇ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਧੀਰ ਧਰੋ ॥

kas adheer pare prabh dheer dharo |

Why are you impatient, be patient,

ਸੀਅ ਜਾਇ ਕਹਾ ਤਿਹ ਸੋਧ ਕਰੋ ॥੩੫੭॥

seea jaae kahaa tih sodh karo |357|

“O my Lord! Do not be impatient, keep your composure. Ruminate on the fact where Sita has gone.?”357.

ਉਠ ਠਾਢਿ ਭਏ ਫਿਰਿ ਭੂਮ ਗਿਰੇ ॥

autth tthaadt bhe fir bhoom gire |

(Ram Ji) stood up but then fell on the earth (and became impure).

ਪਹਰੇਕਕ ਲਉ ਫਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਾਨ ਫਿਰੇ ॥

paharekak lau fir praan fire |

Ram got up but again swooned and came to consciousness again after some time.

ਤਨ ਚੇਤ ਸੁਚੇਤ ਉਠੇ ਹਰਿ ਯੌਂ ॥

tan chet suchet utthe har yauan |

With surat coming into the body, Rama woke up like this

ਰਣ ਮੰਡਲ ਮਧਿ ਗਿਰਯੋ ਭਟ ਜਯੋਂ ॥੩੫੮॥

ran manddal madh girayo bhatt jayon |358|

He got up from the earth like a warrior slowly regaining consciousness in the battlefield.358.

ਛਹੂੰ ਓਰ ਪੁਕਾਰ ਬਕਾਰ ਥਕੇ ॥

chhahoon or pukaar bakaar thake |

The fourth side got tired of shouting loudly.

ਲਘੁ ਭ੍ਰਾਤ ਬਹੁ ਭਾਤਿ ਝਥੇ ॥

lagh bhraat bahu bhaat jhathe |

He grew tired on shouting on all the four sides and experienced great anguish alongwith his younger brother.

ਉਠ ਕੈ ਪੁਨ ਪ੍ਰਾਤ ਇਸਨਾਨ ਗਏ ॥

autth kai pun praat isanaan ge |

(After the night had passed) then Rama got up in the morning and went to bathe.

ਜਲ ਜੰਤ ਸਭੈ ਜਰਿ ਛਾਰਿ ਭਏ ॥੩੫੯॥

jal jant sabhai jar chhaar bhe |359|

He went to take bath early in the morning and with the impact of the heat of his agony, all the creatures in the water were burnt down and reduced to ashes.359.

ਬਿਰਹੀ ਜਿਹ ਓਰ ਸੁ ਦਿਸਟ ਧਰੈ ॥

birahee jih or su disatt dharai |

Vyyogi (Rama) used to look towards,

ਫਲ ਫੂਲ ਪਲਾਸ ਅਕਾਸ ਜਰੈ ॥

fal fool palaas akaas jarai |

The direction to which Ram saw in his state separation from his beloved, all the flowers and fruit as well us the trees of Palas and the sky burnt with the heat of his vision.

ਕਰ ਸੌ ਧਰ ਜਉਨ ਛੁਅੰਤ ਭਈ ॥

kar sau dhar jaun chhuant bhee |

The land that their hands touched,

ਕਚ ਬਾਸਨ ਜਯੋਂ ਪਕ ਫੂਟ ਗਈ ॥੩੬੦॥

kach baasan jayon pak foott gee |360|

Whenever he touched the earth with his hands, the earth cracked like a brittle vessel with his touch.360.

ਜਿਹ ਭੂਮ ਥਲੀ ਪਰ ਰਾਮ ਫਿਰੇ ॥

jih bhoom thalee par raam fire |

The land on which Ram roamed,

ਦਵ ਜਯੋਂ ਜਲ ਪਾਤ ਪਲਾਸ ਗਿਰੇ ॥

dav jayon jal paat palaas gire |

The ground on which Ram rested, the Palas trees (on that ground) were burnt down and reduced to ashes like the grass.

ਟੁਟ ਆਸੂ ਆਰਣ ਨੈਨ ਝਰੀ ॥

ttutt aasoo aaran nain jharee |

Tears are falling from (Rama's) red eyes

ਮਨੋ ਤਾਤ ਤਵਾ ਪਰ ਬੂੰਦ ਪਰੀ ॥੩੬੧॥

mano taat tavaa par boond paree |361|

The continuous flow of his tears evaporated on falling down on the earth like the drops of water falling on the got plate.361.

ਤਨ ਰਾਘਵ ਭੇਟ ਸਮੀਰ ਜਰੀ ॥

tan raaghav bhett sameer jaree |

By touching Ram's body, the wind burned

ਤਜ ਧੀਰ ਸਰੋਵਰ ਸਾਝ ਦੁਰੀ ॥

taj dheer sarovar saajh duree |

Even the cold mind burnt when it touched his body and controlling its coolness and forsaking its patience, it merged into the pool of water

ਨਹਿ ਤਤ੍ਰ ਥਲੀ ਸਤ ਪਤ੍ਰ ਰਹੇ ॥

neh tatr thalee sat patr rahe |

(in the lake) let not the lotus remain in that place,

ਜਲ ਜੰਤ ਪਰਤ੍ਰਿਨ ਪਤ੍ਰ ਦਹੇ ॥੩੬੨॥

jal jant paratrin patr dahe |362|

Even there the leaves of lotus could not survive and the creatures of water, grass, leaves etc. all were reduced to ashes with the geat of the state of separation of Ram.362.
