ਏਕ ਜਾਰ ਸੁਨਾ ਨਯੋ ਤਿਹ ਡਾਰੀਐ ਅਬਿਚਾਰ ॥
ek jaar sunaa nayo tih ddaareeai abichaar |Another new trap has been heard, it should be found without thinking.
ਸਤਿ ਬਾਤ ਕਹੋ ਤੁਮੈ ਸੁਨਿ ਰਾਜ ਰਾਜ ਵਤਾਰ ॥੧੪੦॥
sat baat kaho tumai sun raaj raaj vataar |140|“Now, O king! throw another net immediately and this is the only step to catch him.”140.
ਗਿਆਨ ਨਾਮੁ ਸੁਨਾ ਹਮੋ ਤਿਹ ਜਾਰ ਕੋ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਰਾਇ ॥
giaan naam sunaa hamo tih jaar ko nrip raae |O Rajan! We have heard the name of that trap is 'Knowledge'.
ਤਉਨ ਤਾ ਮੈ ਡਾਰਿ ਕੈ ਮੁਨਿ ਰਾਜ ਲੇਹੁ ਗਹਾਇ ॥
taun taa mai ddaar kai mun raaj lehu gahaae |“O king! we have heard about the name of the net of knowledge, throw the same in the ocean and catch the great sage
ਯੌ ਨ ਹਾਥਿ ਪਰੇ ਮੁਨੀਸੁਰ ਬੀਤ ਹੈ ਬਹੁ ਬਰਖ ॥
yau na haath pare muneesur beet hai bahu barakh |“The sage will not be caught with any other measure even for years
ਸਤਿ ਬਾਤ ਕਹੌ ਤੁਮੈ ਸੁਨ ਲੀਜੀਐ ਭਰਤਰਖ ॥੧੪੧॥
sat baat kahau tumai sun leejeeai bharatarakh |141|O protector! listen to it, we are telling you the truth.”141.
ਯੌ ਨ ਪਾਨਿ ਪਰੇ ਮੁਨਾਬਰ ਹੋਹਿਾਂ ਕੋਟਿ ਉਪਾਇ ॥
yau na paan pare munaabar hohiaan kott upaae |“You may take croes of measures except this, you will not be able to catch him
ਡਾਰ ਕੇ ਤੁਮ ਗ੍ਯਾਨ ਜਾਰ ਸੁ ਤਾਸੁ ਲੇਹੁ ਗਹਾਇ ॥
ddaar ke tum gayaan jaar su taas lehu gahaae |” Only throw the net of knowledge and catch him”
ਗ੍ਯਾਨ ਜਾਰ ਜਬੈ ਨ੍ਰਿਪੰਬਰ ਡਾਰ੍ਯੋ ਤਿਹ ਬੀਚ ॥
gayaan jaar jabai nripanbar ddaarayo tih beech |When the great king (Parasnath) put the net of knowledge in him.
ਤਉਨ ਜਾਰ ਗਹੋ ਮੁਨਾਬਰ ਜਾਨੁ ਦੂਜ ਦਧੀਚ ॥੧੪੨॥
taun jaar gaho munaabar jaan dooj dadheech |142|When the king threw the net of knowledge into the ocean that net caught him like the second Dadhich.142.
ਮਛ ਸਹਿਤ ਮਛਿੰਦ੍ਰ ਜੋਗੀ ਬਧਿ ਜਾਰ ਮਝਾਰ ॥
machh sahit machhindr jogee badh jaar majhaar |Machindra Jogi was tied in a net with a fish.
ਮਛ ਲੋਕ ਬਿਲੋਕਿ ਕੈ ਸਬ ਹ੍ਵੈ ਗਏ ਬਿਸੰਭਾਰ ॥
machh lok bilok kai sab hvai ge bisanbhaar |The Yogi Matsyendra was caught alongwith the fish, having been entrapped in the net and seeing that fish all were wonder-struck
ਦ੍ਵੈ ਮਹੂਰਤ ਬਿਤੀ ਜਬੈ ਸੁਧਿ ਪਾਇ ਕੈ ਕਛੁ ਅੰਗਿ ॥
dvai mahoorat bitee jabai sudh paae kai kachh ang |After the passage of two hours, when some of the bodies can be cleansed,
ਭੂਪ ਦ੍ਵਾਰ ਗਏ ਸਭੈ ਭਟ ਬਾਧਿ ਅਸਤ੍ਰ ਉਤੰਗ ॥੧੪੩॥
bhoop dvaar ge sabhai bhatt baadh asatr utang |143|After some time, when all the people regained some health, then all the warriors, depositing their arms and weapons reached at the gate of the king.143.
ਮਛ ਉਦਰ ਲਗੇ ਸੁ ਚੀਰਨ ਕਿਉਹੂੰ ਨ ਚੀਰਾ ਜਾਇ ॥
machh udar lage su cheeran kiauhoon na cheeraa jaae |They began to rip the belly of the fish, but none of them could do it
ਹਾਰਿ ਹਾਰਿ ਪਰੈ ਜਬੈ ਤਬ ਪੂਛ ਮਿਤ੍ਰ ਬੁਲਾਇ ॥
haar haar parai jabai tab poochh mitr bulaae |When all of them gave in, then the king called his friends and asked them :
ਅਉਰ ਕਉਨ ਬਿਚਾਰੀਐ ਉਪਚਾਰ ਤਾਕਰ ਆਜ ॥
aaur kaun bichaareeai upachaar taakar aaj |(To tear it) or some other effort (remedy) should be considered,
ਦ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਜਾ ਤੇ ਪਰੈ ਮੁਨੀਸ੍ਵਰ ਸਰੇ ਹਮਰੋ ਕਾਜੁ ॥੧੪੪॥
drisatt jaa te parai muneesvar sare hamaro kaaj |144|“Now what measure be adopted, so that we may be successful in our objective and see the great sage.”144.

ਮਛ ਪੇਟ ਕਿਹੂੰ ਨ ਫਟੇ ਸਬ ਕਰ ਹਟੇ ਉਪਾਇ ॥
machh pett kihoon na fatte sab kar hatte upaae |All of them used their power, but the belly of the fish could not be ripped,
ਗ੍ਯਾਨ ਗੁਰੂ ਤਿਨ ਕੋ ਹੁਤੋ ਪੂਛਾ ਤਹਿ ਬਨਾਇ ॥੧੪੫॥
gayaan guroo tin ko huto poochhaa teh banaae |145|Then the king tried to ask the knowledge- Guru.145.
ਤੋਟਕ ਛੰਦ ॥
tottak chhand |TOTAK STANZA
ਭਟ ਤ੍ਯਾਗ ਕੈ ਸਬ ਗਰਬ ॥
bhatt tayaag kai sab garab |All the warriors, forsaking their pride,
ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਤੀਰ ਬੋਲੋ ਸਰਬ ॥
nrip teer bolo sarab |Came near the king and spoke,
ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਪੂਛੀਐ ਗੁਰ ਗ੍ਯਾਨ ॥
nrip poochheeai gur gayaan |“O king! ask only the knowledge-Guru,
ਕਹਿ ਦੇਇ ਤੋਹਿ ਬਿਧਾਨ ॥੧੪੬॥
keh dee tohi bidhaan |146|He will only tell us all the method.”146.
ਬਿਧਿ ਪੂਰਿ ਕੈ ਸੁਭ ਚਾਰ ॥
bidh poor kai subh chaar |By completing the method of good conduct
ਅਰੁ ਗ੍ਯਾਨ ਰੀਤਿ ਬਿਚਾਰਿ ॥
ar gayaan reet bichaar |The king reflected methodically and invoked knowledge and said,
ਗੁਰ ਭਾਖੀਐ ਮੁਹਿ ਭੇਵ ॥
gur bhaakheeai muhi bhev |O Gurudev! Tell me (that) secret
ਕਿਮ ਦੇਖੀਐ ਮੁਨਿ ਦੇਵ ॥੧੪੭॥
kim dekheeai mun dev |147|“O chief Guru! tell me the mystery as to how the sage can be seen ?”147.
ਗੁਰ ਗ੍ਯਾਨ ਬੋਲ੍ਯੋ ਬੈਨ ॥
gur gayaan bolayo bain |Knowledge' Guru said goodbye
ਸੁਭ ਬਾਚ ਸੋ ਸੁਖ ਦੈਨ ॥
subh baach so sukh dain |Then the knowledge-Guru uttered these ambrosial words,
ਛੁਰਕਾ ਬਿਬੇਕ ਲੈ ਹਾਥ ॥
chhurakaa bibek lai haath |(O Rajan!) Take Bibek's dagger in your hand.
ਇਹ ਫਾਰੀਐ ਤਿਹ ਸਾਥ ॥੧੪੮॥
eih faareeai tih saath |148|”O king! Take the knife of Viveka (Discrimination) and tear off this fish.”148.
ਤਬ ਕਾਮ ਤੈਸੋ ਈ ਕੀਨ ॥
tab kaam taiso ee keen |Then it worked the same way
ਗੁਰ ਗ੍ਯਾਨ ਜ੍ਯੋਂ ਸਿਖ ਦੀਨ ॥
gur gayaan jayon sikh deen |Then, whatever the Guru had instructed, it was done accordingly
ਗਹਿ ਕੈ ਬਿਬੇਕਹਿ ਹਾਥ ॥
geh kai bibekeh haath |Holding the bibek (knife) in his hand,
ਤਿਹ ਚੀਰਿਆ ਤਿਹ ਸਾਥ ॥੧੪੯॥
tih cheeriaa tih saath |149|After adopting Viveka, that fish was ripped.149.
ਜਬ ਚੀਰਿ ਪੇਟ ਬਨਾਇ ॥
jab cheer pett banaae |When (the fish's) stomach is well slit
ਤਬ ਦੇਖਏ ਜਗ ਰਾਇ ॥
tab dekhe jag raae |When the belly of the fish was ripped, then that great sage was seen
ਜੁਤ ਧ੍ਯਾਨ ਮੁੰਦ੍ਰਤ ਨੈਨ ॥
jut dhayaan mundrat nain |(He) had his eyes closed in meditation
ਬਿਨੁ ਆਸ ਚਿਤ ਨ ਡੁਲੈਨ ॥੧੫੦॥
bin aas chit na ddulain |150|He was sitting there with closed eyes and concentration, detaching himself from all desires.150.
ਸਤ ਧਾਤ ਪੁਤ੍ਰਾ ਕੀਨ ॥
sat dhaat putraa keen |Made an effigy of seven metals.
ਮੁਨਿ ਦ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਤਰ ਧਰ ਦੀਨ ॥
mun drisatt tar dhar deen |Then a sheet made of seven metals was put under the view of the sage
ਜਬ ਛੂਟਿ ਰਿਖਿ ਕੇ ਧ੍ਯਾਨ ॥
jab chhoott rikh ke dhayaan |When the sage (Muni) lost his attention,
ਤਬ ਭਏ ਭਸਮ ਪ੍ਰਮਾਨ ॥੧੫੧॥
tab bhe bhasam pramaan |151|When the contemplation of the sage broke, the sheet was reduced to ashes by the sight of the sage.151.
ਜੋ ਅਉਰ ਦ੍ਰਿਗ ਤਰਿ ਆਉ ॥
jo aaur drig tar aau |If someone else comes under the eyes,
ਸੋਊ ਜੀਅਤ ਜਾਨ ਨ ਪਾਉ ॥
soaoo jeeat jaan na paau |If anything else had come within his sight (at that time),
