ਯਾ ਕੇ ਕੰਠ ਟੂਕ ਫਸਿ ਗਯੋ ॥੩॥

ਚੇਤ ਮੁਗਲ ਜਬ ਹੀ ਭਯਾ ਸੀਸ ਰਹਿਯੋ ਨਿਹੁਰਾਇ ॥
chet mugal jab hee bhayaa sees rahiyo nihuraae |

When the Mughal regained consciousness, he hung his head,

ਅਤਿ ਲਜਤ ਜਿਯ ਮੈ ਭਯਾ ਬੈਨ ਨ ਭਾਖ੍ਯੋ ਜਾਇ ॥੪॥
at lajat jiy mai bhayaa bain na bhaakhayo jaae |4|

He was so much ashamed that he could not speak.(4)

ਅਬ ਮੈ ਯਾਹਿ ਉਬਾਰਿਯਾ ਸੀਤਲ ਬਾਰਿ ਪਿਯਾਇ ॥
ab mai yaeh ubaariyaa seetal baar piyaae |

The woman told, ‘I have saved you by giving you cold water.’

ਸਭ ਸੌ ਐਸੀ ਭਾਤਿ ਕਹਿ ਤਾ ਕੌ ਦਿਯਾ ਉਠਾਇ ॥੫॥
sabh sau aaisee bhaat keh taa kau diyaa utthaae |5|

And acting this way, she made him to go away.(5)

ਜਹਾਗੀਰ ਪਾਤਿਸਾਹ ਕੇ ਬੇਗਮ ਨੂਰ ਜਹਾ ॥
jahaageer paatisaah ke begam noor jahaa |

Emperor Jehangir had Noor Jehan as his Begum, the Rani.

ਬਸਿ ਕੀਨਾ ਪਤਿ ਆਪਨਾ ਇਹ ਜਸ ਜਹਾ ਤਹਾ ॥੧॥
bas keenaa pat aapanaa ih jas jahaa tahaa |1|

Whole world knew she was quite domineering over him.(1)

ਨੂਰ ਜਹਾ ਇਮਿ ਬਚਨ ਉਚਾਰੇ ॥
noor jahaa im bachan uchaare |

Noor Jahan said thus

ਜਹਾਗੀਰ ਸੁਨੁ ਸਾਹ ਹਮਾਰੇ ॥
jahaageer sun saah hamaare |

Noor Jehan said to him like this, ‘Listen, Jehangir, my Raja,

ਹਮ ਤੁਮ ਆਜੁ ਅਖੇਟਕ ਜੈਹੈਂ ॥
ham tum aaj akhettak jaihain |

You and I will go hunting today.

ਸਭ ਇਸਤ੍ਰਿਨ ਕਹ ਸਾਥ ਬੁਲੈਹੈਂ ॥੨॥
sabh isatrin kah saath bulaihain |2|

‘Me and you go for hunting today and would take all the women with us.’(2)

ਜਹਾਗੀਰ ਏ ਬਚਨ ਸੁਨਿ ਖੇਲਨ ਚੜਾ ਸਿਕਾਰ ॥
jahaageer e bachan sun khelan charraa sikaar |

Acquiescing to her request, Jehangir set out to go for hunting,

ਸਖੀ ਸਹੇਲੀ ਸੰਗ ਲੈ ਆਯੋ ਬਨਹਿ ਮੰਝਾਰ ॥੩॥
sakhee sahelee sang lai aayo baneh manjhaar |3|

And reached the jungle with all the lady-friends.(3)

ਅਰੁਨ ਬਸਤ੍ਰ ਤਨ ਮਹਿ ਧਰੇ ਇਮਿ ਅਬਲਾ ਦੁਤਿ ਦੇਹਿ ॥
arun basatr tan meh dhare im abalaa dut dehi |

The ladies in their red clothes were looking so attractive,

ਨਰ ਬਪੁਰੇ ਕਾ ਸੁਰਨ ਕੇ ਚਿਤ ਚੁਰਾਏ ਲੇਹਿ ॥੪॥
nar bapure kaa suran ke chit churaae lehi |4|

That they were penetrating the hearts of both, the humans and the gods (4)

ਨਵਲ ਬਸਤ੍ਰ ਨਵਲੈ ਜੁਬਨ ਨਵਲਾ ਤਿਯਾ ਅਨੂਪ ॥
naval basatr navalai juban navalaa tiyaa anoop |

In new clothes, pristine youth, unique features,

ਤਾ ਕਾਨਨ ਮੈ ਡੋਲਹੀ ਰਤਿ ਸੇ ਸਕਲ ਸਰੂਪ ॥੫॥
taa kaanan mai ddolahee rat se sakal saroop |5|

And distinctive ear-wears, they were all looking exquisite.(5)

ਇਕ ਗੋਰੀ ਇਕ ਸਾਵਰੀ ਹਸਿ ਹਸਿ ਝੂਮਰ ਦੇਹਿ ॥
eik goree ik saavaree has has jhoomar dehi |

Some fair and some with dark complexion,

ਜਹਾਗੀਰ ਨਰ ਨਾਹ ਕੀ ਸਗਲ ਬਲੈਯਾ ਲੇਹਿ ॥੬॥
jahaageer nar naah kee sagal balaiyaa lehi |6|

All were complimented by Jehangir.(6) .

ਸਬ ਤ੍ਰਿਯ ਹਥਿਨ ਅਰੂੜਿਤ ਭਈ ॥
sab triy hathin aroorrit bhee |

All the women rode on the elephants.

ਸਭ ਹੀ ਹਾਥ ਬੰਦੂਕੈ ਲਈ ॥
sabh hee haath bandookai lee |

Some women were riding the elephants and all were holding rifles in the hands.

ਬਿਹਸਿ ਬਿਹਸਿ ਕਰਿ ਬਚਨ ਸੁਨਾਵੈ ॥
bihas bihas kar bachan sunaavai |

They used to recite the words with laughter

ਜਹਾਗੀਰ ਕਹ ਸੀਸ ਝੁਕਾਵੈ ॥੭॥
jahaageer kah sees jhukaavai |7|

They were gossiping, talking, and were bowing their heads to Jehangir.(7)

ਸਭ ਇਸਤ੍ਰਿਨ ਕਰ ਜੋਰੈ ਕੀਨੌ ॥
sabh isatrin kar jorai keenau |

They were gossiping, talking, and were bowing their heads to Jehangir.(7)

ਏਕ ਮ੍ਰਿਗਹਿ ਜਾਨੇ ਨਹਿ ਦੀਨੌ ॥
ek mrigeh jaane neh deenau |

Some were sitting with their folded hands; they did not let any deer to pass through.

ਕੇਤਿਕ ਬੈਠ ਬਹਲ ਪਰ ਗਈ ॥
ketik baitth bahal par gee |

ਹੈ ਗੈ ਕਿਤੀ ਅਰੂੜਿਤ ਭਈ ॥੮॥
hai gai kitee aroorrit bhee |8|

Some were sitting on the backs of the bullocks and some were on the backs of the horses.(8)

ਕਿਨਹੂੰ ਗਹੀ ਤੁਫੰਗ ਕਰ ਕਿਨਹੂੰ ਗਹੀ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾਨ ॥

Some drew out the guns and some swords,

ਕਿਨਹੂੰ ਕਟਾਰੀ ਕਾਢਿ ਲੀ ਕਿਨਹੂੰ ਤਨੀ ਕਮਾਨ ॥੯॥
kinahoon kattaaree kaadt lee kinahoon tanee kamaan |9|

Some were holding the spears and some bows and arrows.(9)

ਪ੍ਰਿਥਮ ਮ੍ਰਿਗਨ ਪਰ ਸ੍ਵਾਨ ਧਵਾਏ ॥
pritham mrigan par svaan dhavaae |

First chase the dogs after the deer

ਪੁਨਿ ਚੀਤਾ ਤੇ ਹਰਿਨ ਗਹਾਏ ॥
pun cheetaa te harin gahaae |

First the dogs were let loose to chase the deer, then were sent the tiger after them.

ਬਾਜ ਜੁਰਨ ਕਾ ਕਿਯਾ ਸਿਕਾਰਾ ॥
baaj juran kaa kiyaa sikaaraa |

ਨੂਰ ਜਹਾ ਪਰ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਅਪਾਰਾ ॥੧੦॥

Then hunted the wild horses and all that was done because he loved Noor Jehan very much.(10)

ਰੋਝ ਹਰਿਨ ਝੰਖਾਰ ਸੰਘਾਰੇ ॥
rojh harin jhankhaar sanghaare |

ਨੂਰ ਜਹਾ ਗਹਿ ਤੁਪਕ ਪ੍ਰਹਾਰੇ ॥
noor jahaa geh tupak prahaare |

Holding a gun, Noor Jehan, as well, killed deer, antelopes and bears.

ਕਿਨਹੂੰ ਹਨੇ ਬੇਗਮਨ ਬਾਨਾ ॥
kinahoon hane begaman baanaa |

How many were killed by the Begums with arrows

ਪਸੁਨ ਕਰਾ ਜਮ ਧਾਮ ਪਯਾਨਾ ॥੧੧॥
pasun karaa jam dhaam payaanaa |11|

Also a number of animals killed by the other begums reached the heaven.(11)

ਅਧਿਕ ਰੂਪ ਬੇਗਮ ਨਿਰਖਿ ਰੀਝਿ ਰਹੈ ਮ੍ਰਿਗ ਕੋਟਿ ॥
adhik roop begam nirakh reejh rahai mrig kott |

The deer were so affected by the looks of the Begums,

ਗਿਰੇ ਮੂਰਛਨਾ ਹ੍ਵੈ ਧਰਨਿ ਲਗੇ ਬਿਨਾ ਸਰ ਚੋਟਿ ॥੧੨॥
gire moorachhanaa hvai dharan lage binaa sar chott |12|

That they, without any hits, sacrificed their lives.(l2)

ਜਿਨ ਕੈ ਤੀਖਨ ਅਸਿ ਲਗੇ ਲੀਜਤ ਤਿਨੈ ਬਚਾਇ ॥
jin kai teekhan as lage leejat tinai bachaae |

Those who were struck with sharp swords could be saved,

ਜਿਨੈ ਦ੍ਰਿਗਨ ਕੇ ਸਰ ਲਗੇ ਤਿਨ ਕੋ ਕਛੁ ਨ ਉਪਾਇ ॥੧੩॥
jinai drigan ke sar lage tin ko kachh na upaae |13|

But the ones, who were pierced by the arrows through female eyes, could not be.(13)

ਕਿਤੀ ਸਹਚਰੀ ਤੁਰੈ ਧਵਾਵੈ ॥

Many friends used to race horses

ਪਹੁਚਿ ਮ੍ਰਿਗਨ ਕੋ ਘਾਇ ਲਗਾਵੈ ॥
pahuch mrigan ko ghaae lagaavai |

A number of ladies rode the horses and injured the deer,

ਕਿਨਹੂੰ ਮ੍ਰਿਗਨ ਦ੍ਰਿਗਨ ਸਰ ਮਾਰੇ ॥
kinahoon mrigan drigan sar maare |

Some shot deer with arrows.

ਬਿਨੁ ਪ੍ਰਾਨਨ ਗਿਰਿ ਗਏ ਬਿਚਾਰੇ ॥੧੪॥
bin praanan gir ge bichaare |14|

And a few poor fellows lost their souls and fell down just effected by the arrows out of the female looks.(l4)

ਇਹੀ ਭਾਤਿ ਸੋ ਕੀਆ ਸਿਕਾਰਾ ॥
eihee bhaat so keea sikaaraa |

Hunted like this.

ਤਬ ਲੌ ਨਿਕਸਾ ਸਿੰਘ ਅਪਾਰਾ ॥
tab lau nikasaa singh apaaraa |

The hunting was proceeding thus, when a huge lion emerged.

ਯਹ ਧੁਨਿ ਸਾਹ ਸ੍ਰਵਨ ਸੁਨਿ ਪਾਈ ॥
yah dhun saah sravan sun paaee |

The king listened to his voice

ਸਕਲ ਨਾਰਿ ਇਕਠੀ ਹ੍ਵੈ ਆਈ ॥੧੫॥
sakal naar ikatthee hvai aaee |15|

The Emperor heard the roar, as well, and all the ladies gathered round him.(15)

ਬਹੁ ਅਰਨਾ ਭੈਸਾਨ ਕੋ ਆਗੇ ਧਰਾ ਬਨਾਇ ॥
bahu aranaa bhaisaan ko aage dharaa banaae |

A shield (of protection), with the buffaloes, was created at the front,

ਤਾ ਪਾਛੇ ਹਜਰਤਿ ਚਲੇ ਬੇਗਮ ਸੰਗ ਸੁਹਾਇ ॥੧੬॥
taa paachhe hajarat chale begam sang suhaae |16|

And then followed the Emperor and the Begums,(l6)

ਜਹਾਗੀਰ ਤਕਿ ਤੁਪਕਿ ਚਲਾਈ ॥
jahaageer tak tupak chalaaee |

Seeing (him), Jahangir fired the gun,

ਸੋ ਨਹਿ ਲਗੀ ਸਿੰਘ ਕੇ ਜਾਈ ॥
so neh lagee singh ke jaaee |

Jehangir aimed and shot but could not hit the lion,

ਅਧਿਕ ਕੋਪ ਕਰਿ ਕੇਹਰਿ ਧਾਯੋ ॥
adhik kop kar kehar dhaayo |

Being very angry, the lion ran away

ਪਾਤਿਸਾਹ ਕੇ ਊਪਰ ਆਯੋ ॥੧੭॥
paatisaah ke aoopar aayo |17|

The lion was infuriated and jumped towards the Emperor.(17)

ਹਰਿ ਧਾਵਤ ਹਥਿਨੀ ਭਜਿ ਗਈ ॥
har dhaavat hathinee bhaj gee |

As soon as the lion came, the elephant ran

ਨੂਰ ਜਹਾਦਿਕ ਠਾਢ ਨ ਪਈ ॥
noor jahaadik tthaadt na pee |

The she-elephant ran away. Noor Jehan was stunned.

ਜੋਧ ਬਾਇ ਯਹ ਤਾਹਿ ਨਿਹਾਰਿਯੋ ॥
jodh baae yah taeh nihaariyo |

Then Jodhabai saw this (situation).

ਤਾਕਿ ਤੁਪਕ ਕੋ ਘਾਇ ਪ੍ਰਹਾਰਿਯੋ ॥੧੮॥
taak tupak ko ghaae prahaariyo |18|

When Jodha Bai noticed, she aimed and shot the gun.(18)
