ਸੁਨਿ ਬਾਲਾ ਮੈ ਬੈਨ ਤਿਹਾਰੋ ॥
sun baalaa mai bain tihaaro |O woman! I have heard your words.
ਅਬ ਪੌਰਖ ਤੈ ਦੇਖੁ ਹਮਾਰੋ ॥
ab pauarakh tai dekh hamaaro |‘You listen to us now and watch our attainments.
ਅਧਿਕ ਬੀਰਜ ਜਾ ਮੈ ਜਿਯ ਧਰਿ ਹੈ ॥
adhik beeraj jaa mai jiy dhar hai |Whose body (meaning body) has more strength,
ਤਾਹੀ ਕਹ ਅਪਨੋ ਪਤਿ ਕਰਿ ਹੈ ॥੧੧॥
taahee kah apano pat kar hai |11|‘The one who displayed an higher aptitude through his semen, you declare him as your husband.’(11)
ਠਗ ਬਚ ਭਾਖਿ ਨਗਰ ਮਹਿ ਗਯੋ ॥
tthag bach bhaakh nagar meh gayo |‘The one who displayed an higher aptitude through his semen, you declare him as your husband.’(11)
ਇਸਥਿਤ ਏਕ ਹਾਟ ਪਰ ਭਯੋ ॥
eisathit ek haatt par bhayo |After announcing this, swindler went to the town and approached a shop.
ਮੁਹਰੈ ਸਕਲ ਦ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਤਹ ਧਰੀ ॥
muharai sakal drisatt tah dharee |He saw all the stamps (in the shop).
ਸਾਹੁ ਭਏ ਇਹ ਭਾਤਿ ਉਚਰੀ ॥੧੨॥
saahu bhe ih bhaat ucharee |12|He saw a heap of gold-coins there and addressed the Shah.(12)

ਐਸ ਭਾਤਿ ਉਚਰਤ ਭਯਾ ਹ੍ਵੈ ਢੀਲੋ ਸਰਬੰਗ ॥
aais bhaat ucharat bhayaa hvai dteelo sarabang |He spoke very Politely and said ‘Oh My Shah
ਮੁਹਰਨ ਕੋ ਸੌਦਾ ਕਰੌ ਸਾਹੁ ਤਿਹਾਰੇ ਸੰਗ ॥੧੩॥
muharan ko sauadaa karau saahu tihaare sang |13|‘Do you want to trade these gold coin with me?’ (13)
ਮਦਨ ਰਾਇ ਠਗ ਇਮ ਕਹੀ ਮਨ ਮੈ ਮੰਤ੍ਰ ਬਿਚਾਰਿ ॥
madan raae tthag im kahee man mai mantr bichaar |Madan Rai, the swindler, had said this after careful reflection,
ਲੈ ਮੁਹਰੈ ਰੁਪਯਾ ਦੇਵੌ ਤੁਮ ਕਹ ਸਾਹ ਸੁਧਾਰਿ ॥੧੪॥
lai muharai rupayaa devau tum kah saah sudhaar |14|‘Let us do a deal. You give me Gold coins in exchange of coins rupees.’(I4)

ਯੌ ਜਬ ਸਾਹ ਬੈਨਿ ਸੁਨ ਪਾਯੋ ॥
yau jab saah bain sun paayo |When the banker heard the talk like this
ਕਾਢਿ ਅਸਰਫੀ ਧਨੀ ਕਹਾਯੋ ॥
kaadt asarafee dhanee kahaayo |When the Shah listened to the preposition, he brought out the coin
ਠਗ ਕੀ ਦ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਜਬੈ ਤੇ ਪਰੀ ॥
tthag kee drisatt jabai te paree |When the sight of the thug fell on them.
ਸਭ ਸਨ ਕੀ ਮਨ ਭੀਤਰਿ ਧਰੀ ॥੧੫॥
sabh san kee man bheetar dharee |15|The swindler looked at the coins and checked the dates of minting. (15)
ਮੁਹਿਰੈ ਡਾਰਿ ਗੁਥਰਿਯਹਿ ਲਈ ॥
muhirai ddaar guthariyeh lee |Put the seals in the guthi
ਅਧਿਕ ਮਾਰਿ ਬਨਿਯਾ ਕਹ ਦਈ ॥
adhik maar baniyaa kah dee |He left the coins there, picked up the bag, started to beat the Shah.
ਊਚੇ ਸੋਰ ਕਰਾ ਪੁਰ ਮਾਹੀ ॥
aooche sor karaa pur maahee |(The thug) made a lot of noise in the town
ਮੈ ਮੁਹਰਨ ਕਹ ਬੇਚਤ ਨਾਹੀ ॥੧੬॥
mai muharan kah bechat naahee |16|And began to shout very loud, ‘I do not want to sell the coins.’(l6)
ਸੋਰ ਸੁਨਤ ਪੁਰ ਜਨ ਸਭ ਧਾਏ ॥
sor sunat pur jan sabh dhaae |All the townspeople heard the noise
ਵਾ ਬਨਿਯਾ ਠਗ ਕੇ ਢਿਗ ਆਏ ॥
vaa baniyaa tthag ke dtig aae |People gathered around and saw them in altercation.
ਮੁਸਟ ਜੁਧ ਨਿਰਖਤ ਅਨੁਰਾਗੇ ॥
musatt judh nirakhat anuraage |By seeing the war of the mukkas
ਤਿਹ ਦੁਹੂੰਅਨ ਕਹ ਪੂਛਨ ਲਾਗੇ ॥੧੭॥
tih duhoonan kah poochhan laage |17|They were surprised to see them in scuffle and asked the reason.(17)
ਤੁਮ ਕ੍ਯੋ ਜੁਧ ਕਰਤ ਹੋ ਭਾਈ ॥
tum kayo judh karat ho bhaaee |brothers! why are you fighting
ਹਮੈ ਕਹਹੁ ਸਭ ਬ੍ਰਿਥਾ ਸੁਨਾਈ ॥
hamai kahahu sabh brithaa sunaaee |‘Why are you fighting, tell us the whole story.’
ਦੁਹੂੰਅਨ ਕਹ ਅਬ ਹੀ ਗਹਿ ਲੈਹੈ ॥
duhoonan kah ab hee geh laihai |By holding (you) both
ਲੈ ਕਾਜੀ ਪੈ ਨ੍ਯਾਇ ਚੁਕੈਹੈ ॥੧੮॥
lai kaajee pai nayaae chukaihai |18|They caught hold of them both and told them to go to the Quazi, the priest arbitrator.(18)
ਸੁਨਤ ਬਚਨ ਉਦਿਤ ਠਗ ਭਯੋ ॥
sunat bachan udit tthag bhayo |The thug got ready as soon as he heard the talk
ਤਾ ਕਹ ਲੈ ਕਾਜੀ ਪਹ ਗਯੋ ॥
taa kah lai kaajee pah gayo |The swindler readily agreed and taking the Shah with him left for the Quazi.
ਅਧਿਕ ਦੁਖਿਤ ਹ੍ਵੈ ਦੀਨ ਪੁਕਾਰੋ ॥
adhik dukhit hvai deen pukaaro |Very sad and humbly said.
ਕਰਿ ਕਾਜੀ ਤੈ ਨ੍ਯਾਇ ਹਮਾਰੋ ॥੧੯॥
kar kaajee tai nayaae hamaaro |19|With great distress he requested the Quazi to do the justice.(19)
ਦੋਹਰਾ ॥

ਤਬ ਲਗਿ ਬਨਿਯਾ ਹ੍ਵੈ ਦੁਖੀ ਇਮਿ ਕਾਜੀ ਸੋ ਬੈਨ ॥
tab lag baniyaa hvai dukhee im kaajee so bain |The Shah too, in agony begged the Quazi,
ਹਮਰੌ ਕਰੌ ਨਿਯਾਇ ਤੁਮ ਕਹਿਯੋ ਸ੍ਰਵਤ ਜਲ ਨੈਨ ॥੨੦॥
hamarau karau niyaae tum kahiyo sravat jal nain |20|And asked him to do full justice.(20)

ਸੁਨੁ ਕਾਜੀ ਜੂ ਬਚਨ ਹਮਾਰੇ ॥
sun kaajee joo bachan hamaare |Hey Kaji! listen to us
ਕਲਾਮੁਲਾ ਕੀ ਆਨਿ ਤਿਹਾਰੇ ॥
kalaamulaa kee aan tihaare |By the 'Kalamula' (words of God, i.e. Quran) to you.
ਖੁਦਾਇ ਸੁਨੌਗੇ ਦਾਦ ਹਮਾਰੋ ॥
khudaae sunauage daad hamaaro |God will hear our plea.
ਹ੍ਵੈਹੌ ਦਾਵਨਗੀਰ ਤੁਹਾਰੋ ॥੨੧॥
hvaihau daavanageer tuhaaro |21|We have caught your fight. 21.
ਦੋਹਰਾ ॥

ਅਧਿਕ ਦੀਨ ਹ੍ਵੈ ਠਗ ਕਹਿਯੋ ਸੁਨੁ ਕਾਜਿਨ ਕੇ ਰਾਇ ॥
adhik deen hvai tthag kahiyo sun kaajin ke raae |‘Listen Quazi; listen to our accounts, keeping in mind the honour of Allah.
ਹਮ ਪੁਕਾਰ ਤੁਮ ਪੈ ਕਰੀ ਹਮਰੋ ਕਰੋ ਨ੍ਯਾਇ ॥੨੨॥
ham pukaar tum pai karee hamaro karo nayaae |22|‘God, Almighty is all perceptive and hope He will facilitate us.(22)

ਤਬ ਕਾਜੀ ਜਿਯ ਨ੍ਯਾਇ ਬਿਚਾਰਿਯੋ ॥
tab kaajee jiy nayaae bichaariyo |Then the Qazi thought in his mind (to do justice).
ਪ੍ਰਗਟ ਸਭਾ ਮੈ ਦੁਹੂੰ ਉਚਾਰਿਯੋ ॥
pragatt sabhaa mai duhoon uchaariyo |Then the Quazi pondered over and addressed both in the gathering.
