ਮਨੋ ਦੋ ਗਿਰੰ ਜੁਧ ਜੁਟੇ ਸਪਛੰ ॥

mano do giran judh jutte sapachhan |

Such a horrible battle was fought between Shankhasura and Machh. It appeared clearly that two mountains were waging war with each other.

ਕਟੇ ਮਾਸ ਟੁਕੰ ਭਖੇ ਗਿਧਿ ਬ੍ਰਿਧੰ ॥

katte maas ttukan bhakhe gidh bridhan |

Pieces of (Sankhasura's) flesh were falling and were being eaten by huge vultures.

ਹਸੈ ਜੋਗਣੀ ਚਉਸਠਾ ਸੂਰ ਸੁਧੰ ॥੫੨॥

hasai joganee chausatthaa soor sudhan |52|

The bits of flesh began to fall, which were devoured by huge vultures, and the sixty-four vampires (Yoginis) began to laugh on seeing this terrible war.52.

ਕੀਯੋ ਉਧਾਰ ਬੇਦੰ ਹਤੇ ਸੰਖਬੀਰੰ ॥

keeyo udhaar bedan hate sankhabeeran |

By killing Sankhasura, (the fish) borrowed the Vedas.

ਤਜ੍ਯੋ ਮਛ ਰੂਪੰ ਸਜ੍ਰਯੋ ਸੁੰਦ੍ਰ ਚੀਰ ॥

tajayo machh roopan sajrayo sundr cheer |

After killing Shankhasura, the Machh (fish) incarnation redeemed the Vedas and Lord, forsaking the Fish-form, bedecked himself with winsome garments.

ਸਬੈ ਦੇਵ ਥਾਪੇ ਕੀਯੋ ਦੁਸਟ ਨਾਸੰ ॥

sabai dev thaape keeyo dusatt naasan |

Established all the gods (in their respective places) and destroyed the wicked.

ਟਰੇ ਸਰਬ ਦਾਨੋ ਭਰੇ ਜੀਵ ਤ੍ਰਾਸੰ ॥੫੩॥

ttare sarab daano bhare jeev traasan |53|

After destroying the tyrants, the Lord established again all the gods, and demons frightening the creatures were destroyed.53.

TRIBHANGI STANZA

ਸੰਖਾਸੁਰ ਮਾਰੇ ਬੇਦ ਉਧਾਰੇ ਸਤ੍ਰ ਸੰਘਾਰੇ ਜਸੁ ਲੀਨੋ ॥

sankhaasur maare bed udhaare satr sanghaare jas leeno |

The Lord received great approbation of killing the demon Shankhasura, redeeming the Vedas and destroying the enemies.

ਦੇਵੇ ਸੁ ਬੁਲਾਯੋ ਰਾਜ ਬਿਠਾਯੋ ਛਤ੍ਰ ਫਿਰਾਯੋ ਸੁਖ ਦੀਨੋ ॥

deve su bulaayo raaj bitthaayo chhatr firaayo sukh deeno |

He called Indra, the king of gods and blessed him with royalty and its comforts.

ਕੋਟੰ ਬਜੇ ਬਾਜੇ ਅਮਰੇਸੁਰ ਗਾਜੇ ਸੁਭ ਘਰਿ ਸਾਜੇ ਸੋਕ ਹਰੇ ॥

kottan baje baaje amaresur gaaje subh ghar saaje sok hare |

Millions of musical instruments began to resound, the gods began to play th tune of bliss and the sorrows of every house were destroyed.

ਦੈ ਕੋਟਕ ਦਛਨਾ ਕ੍ਰੋਰ ਪ੍ਰਦਛਨਾ ਆਨਿ ਸੁ ਮਛ ਕੇ ਪਾਇ ਪਰੇ ॥੫੪॥

dai kottak dachhanaa kror pradachhanaa aan su machh ke paae pare |54|

All the gods bowed in respect at the feet of Fish incarnation presenting various types of gifts and making millions of circumambulations.54.

ਇਤਿ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਬਚਿਤ੍ਰ ਨਾਟਕ ਗ੍ਰੰਥੇ ਮਛ ਪ੍ਰਥਮ ਅਵਤਾਰ ਸੰਖਾਸੁਰ ਬਧਹ ਸਮਾਪਤਮ ਸਤੁ ਸੁਭਮ ਸਤੁ ॥੧॥

End of the description of the first Machh (fish) Incarnation and Killing of Shankhasura in BACHITTAR NATAK.

ਅਥ ਕਛ ਅਵਤਾਰ ਕਥਨੰ ॥

Now begins the description of Kachh (Tortoise) Incarnation:

ਭੁਜੰਗ ਪ੍ਰਯਾਤ ਛੰਦ ॥

BHUJANG PRAYAAT STANZA

ਕਿਤੋ ਕਾਲ ਬੀਤਯੋ ਕਰਿਯੋ ਦੇਵ ਰਾਜੰ ॥

kito kaal beetayo kariyo dev raajan |

Some time passed in ruling the gods.

ਭਰੇ ਰਾਜ ਧਾਮੰ ਸੁਭੰ ਸਰਬ ਸਾਜੰ ॥

bhare raaj dhaaman subhan sarab saajan |

Indra, the king of gods, ruled for a long time and his palaces were full of all materials of comfort

ਗਜੰ ਬਾਜ ਬੀਣੰ ਬਿਨਾ ਰਤਨ ਭੂਪੰ ॥

gajan baaj beenan binaa ratan bhoopan |

(But still) bereft (of the gods) of gems like elephants, horses, beans, etc.

ਕਰਿਯੋ ਬਿਸਨ ਬੀਚਾਰ ਚਿਤੰ ਅਨੂਪੰ ॥੧॥

kariyo bisan beechaar chitan anoopan |1|

But once Vishnu reflected upon a unique idea in his mind that this king is without elephants, horses and jewels (therefore something should be done in this direction).1.

ਸਬੈ ਦੇਵ ਏਕਤ੍ਰ ਕੀਨੇ ਪੁਰਿੰਦ੍ਰੰ ॥

sabai dev ekatr keene purindran |

Vishnu (Purinder) gathered all the gods

ਸਸੰ ਸੂਰਜੰ ਆਦਿ ਲੈ ਕੈ ਉਪਿੰਦ੍ਰੰ ॥

sasan soorajan aad lai kai upindran |

Indra gathered together all the gods including Chandra. Surya and Upendra.

ਹੁਤੇ ਦਈਤ ਜੇ ਲੋਕ ਮਧ੍ਰਯੰ ਹੰਕਾਰੀ ॥

hute deet je lok madhrayan hankaaree |

The proud giants who were in the world,

ਭਏ ਏਕਠੇ ਭ੍ਰਾਤਿ ਭਾਵੰ ਬਿਚਾਰੀ ॥੨॥

bhe ekatthe bhraat bhaavan bichaaree |2|

Considering this gathering as some stratagem against them, the proud demons also gathered together.2.

ਬਦ੍ਯੋ ਅਰਧੁ ਅਰਧੰ ਦੁਹੂੰ ਬਾਟਿ ਲੀਬੋ ॥

badayo aradh aradhan duhoon baatt leebo |

(Before the ocean was churned) it was decided (that what came out when the ocean was churned) both (gods and giants) would share half.

ਸਬੋ ਬਾਤ ਮਾਨੀ ਯਹੇ ਕਾਮ ਕੀਬੋ ॥

sabo baat maanee yahe kaam keebo |

Now both the groups decided that whatever shall be attained, the same shall be distributed equally. All of them agreed on this proposal and the work was begun

ਕਰੋ ਮਥਨੀ ਕੂਟ ਮੰਦ੍ਰਾਚਲੇਯੰ ॥

karo mathanee koott mandraachaleyan |

Made the Mandrachal mountain Madhani

ਤਕ੍ਰਯੋ ਛੀਰ ਸਾਮੁੰਦ੍ਰ ਦੇਅੰ ਅਦੇਯੰ ॥੩॥

takrayo chheer saamundr dean adeyan |3|

Both the gods and demons settled the programme of churning the milk-ocean, making churning-stick of the Mandrachal mountain.3.

ਕਰੀ ਮਥਕਾ ਬਾਸਕੰ ਸਿੰਧ ਮਧੰ ॥

karee mathakaa baasakan sindh madhan |

Chhir in the ocean (to stir the nectar of the Mandrachal mountain) made Bask the snake Netra.

ਮਥੈ ਲਾਗ ਦੋਊ ਭਏ ਅਧੁ ਅਧੰ ॥

mathai laag doaoo bhe adh adhan |

The serpent Vasuki was made the rope of the churning-stick and dividing the participants equally, both the ends of the rope were held tighty.

ਸਿਰੰ ਦੈਤ ਲਾਗੇ ਗਹੀ ਪੁਛ ਦੇਵੰ ॥

siran dait laage gahee puchh devan |

The giants held the head side and the gods held the tail.

ਮਥ੍ਰਯੋ ਛੀਰ ਸਿੰਧੰ ਮਨੋ ਮਾਟਕੇਵੰ ॥੪॥

mathrayo chheer sindhan mano maattakevan |4|

The demons caught hold of the side of the head and the gods the tail, they began to churn like the curd in a vessel.4.

ਇਸੋ ਕਉਣ ਬੀਯੋ ਧਰੇ ਭਾਰੁ ਪਬੰ ॥

eiso kaun beeyo dhare bhaar paban |

Who else can bear the weight of the mountain?

ਉਠੇ ਕਾਪ ਬੀਰੰ ਦਿਤ੍ਰਯਾਦਿਤ੍ਰਯ ਸਬੰ ॥

autthe kaap beeran ditrayaaditray saban |

Now they reflected on this idea as to who can be the mighty hero, who can endure the load of the mountain (because a base was required for the purpose)? Hearing this Ditya, Aditya etc., the heroes shuddered, faltering in absurd prattle.

ਤਬੈ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਬਿਸਨ ਮੰਤ੍ਰੰ ਬਿਚਾਰਿਯੋ ॥

tabai aap hee bisan mantran bichaariyo |

Then Vishnu himself thought (that the mountain should not sink).

ਤਰੇ ਪਰਬਤੰ ਕਛਪੰ ਰੂਪ ਧਾਰਿਯੋ ॥੫॥

tare parabatan kachhapan roop dhaariyo |5|

Then observing this difficulty of both the gods and demons, Vishnu himself thought about it and transforming himself in the form of Kachh (tortoise), seated himself at the base of the mountain.5.
