MADHUBHAAR STANZA

ਮੁਖਿ ਬਮਤ ਜੁਆਲ ॥
mukh bamat juaal |

ਨਿਕਸੀ ਕਪਾਲਿ ॥
nikasee kapaal |

The flames of fire come from her mouth and she herself came out from the forehead (of Durga).

ਮਾਰੇ ਗਜੇਸ ॥
maare gajes |

ਛੁਟੇ ਹੈਏਸ ॥੨੮॥
chhutte haies |28|

She killed the great elephants and the warriors on horseback.28.

ਛੁਟੰਤ ਬਾਣ ॥
chhuttant baan |

ਝਮਕਤ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾਣ ॥
jhamakat kripaan |

The arrows are being shot and the swords are glistening.

ਸਾਗੰ ਪ੍ਰਹਾਰ ॥
saagan prahaar |

ਖੇਲਤ ਧਮਾਰ ॥੨੯॥
khelat dhamaar |29|

The daggers are being struck and it appears that the festival of Holi is being celebrated.29.

baahai nisang |

ਉਠੇ ਝੜੰਗ ॥
autthe jharrang |

The weapons are being use unhesitatingly, which create clattering sounds.

The guns boom and produce roaring sounds. 30

The Mother (goddess) challenges and the wounds bust.

ਜੁਝੇ ਜੁਆਣ ॥
jujhe juaan |

The youthful warriors fight and the horses dance.31

ROOAAL STANZA

ਧਾਈਯੋ ਅਸੁਰੇਾਂਦ੍ਰ ਤਹਿ ਨਿਜ ਕੋਪ ਓਪ ਬਢਾਇ ॥
dhaaeeyo asureaandr teh nij kop op badtaae |

With increased anger, the demon-king sped forward.

ਸੰਗ ਲੈ ਚਤੁਰੰਗ ਸੈਨਾ ਸੁਧ ਸਸਤ੍ਰ ਨਚਾਇ ॥
sang lai chaturang sainaa sudh sasatr nachaae |

He had four kinds of forces with him, who cause the dance of sharp weapons.

ਦੇਬਿ ਸਸਤ੍ਰ ਲਗੈ ਗਿਰੈ ਰਣਿ ਰੁਝਿ ਜੁਝਿ ਜੁਆਣ ॥
deb sasatr lagai girai ran rujh jujh juaan |

Whosoever was struck by the weapons of the goddess, those fighting warriors fell in the field.

ਪੀਲਰਾਜ ਫਿਰੇ ਕਹੂੰ ਰਣ ਸੁਛ ਛੁਛ ਕਿਕਾਣ ॥੩੨॥
peelaraaj fire kahoon ran suchh chhuchh kikaan |32|

Somewhere the elephants and somewhere horses are roaming without riders in the battlefield.32.

ਚੀਰ ਚਾਮਰ ਪੁੰਜ ਕੁੰਜਰ ਬਾਜ ਰਾਜ ਅਨੇਕ ॥
cheer chaamar punj kunjar baaj raaj anek |

Somewhere clothes, turbans and fly-whisks are lying scattered and somewhere elephants, horses and chieftains are lying dead.

ਸਸਤ੍ਰ ਅਸਤ੍ਰ ਸੁਭੇ ਕਹੂੰ ਸਰਦਾਰ ਸੁਆਰ ਅਨੇਕ ॥
sasatr asatr subhe kahoon saradaar suaar anek |

Somewhere generals and warriors with weapons and aromuts are lying down.

ਤੇਗੁ ਤੀਰ ਤੁਫੰਗ ਤਬਰ ਕੁਹੁਕ ਬਾਨ ਅਨੰਤ ॥
teg teer tufang tabar kuhuk baan anant |

Somewhere the sonund of arrows, swords, guns, axes and special shafts is being heard.

ਬੇਧਿ ਬੇਧਿ ਗਿਰੈ ਬਰਛਿਨ ਸੂਰ ਸੋਭਾਵੰਤ ॥੩੩॥
bedh bedh girai barachhin soor sobhaavant |33|

Somewhere the heroes pierced by the daggers have fallen gracefully.33.

ਗ੍ਰਿਧ ਬ੍ਰਿਧ ਉਡੇ ਤਹਾ ਫਿਕਰੰਤ ਸੁਆਨ ਸ੍ਰਿੰਗਾਲ ॥
gridh bridh udde tahaa fikarant suaan sringaal |

Large-sized vultures are flying there, the dogs are barking and the jackals are howling.

ਮਤ ਦੰਤਿ ਸਪਛ ਪਬੈ ਕੰਕ ਬੰਕ ਰਸਾਲ ॥
mat dant sapachh pabai kank bank rasaal |

The intoxicated elephants look like the winged mountains and the crows, flying down to eat the flesh.

ਛੁਦ੍ਰ ਮੀਨ ਛੁਰੁਧ੍ਰਕਾ ਅਰੁ ਚਰਮ ਕਛਪ ਅਨੰਤ ॥
chhudr meen chhurudhrakaa ar charam kachhap anant |

Thhe swords on the bodies of the demons appear like small fish and the shields look like tortoises.

ਨਕ੍ਰ ਬਕ੍ਰ ਸੁ ਬਰਮ ਸੋਭਿਤ ਸ੍ਰੋਣ ਨੀਰ ਦੁਰੰਤ ॥੩੪॥
nakr bakr su baram sobhit sron neer durant |34|

On their bodies, the steel-armour looks elegant and the blood is flowing down like flood.34.

ਨਵ ਸੂਰ ਨਵਕਾ ਸੇ ਰਥੀ ਅਤਿਰਥੀ ਜਾਨੁ ਜਹਾਜ ॥
nav soor navakaa se rathee atirathee jaan jahaaj |

The new young warriors appear like boats and thhe charioteers look like shimps.

ਲਾਦਿ ਲਾਦਿ ਮਨੋ ਚਲੇ ਧਨ ਧੀਰ ਬੀਰ ਸਲਾਜ ॥
laad laad mano chale dhan dheer beer salaaj |

All this appears as if the traders loading their commodities are coyly running out of the battlefield.

ਮੋਲੁ ਬੀਚ ਫਿਰੈ ਚੁਕਾਤ ਦਲਾਲ ਖੇਤ ਖਤੰਗ ॥
mol beech firai chukaat dalaal khet khatang |

The arrows of the battlefield are like the agents, who are busy in settling the account of the transaction.

ਗਾਹਿ ਗਾਹਿ ਫਿਰੇ ਫਵਜਨਿ ਝਾਰਿ ਦਿਰਬ ਨਿਖੰਗ ॥੩੫॥
gaeh gaeh fire favajan jhaar dirab nikhang |35|

The armies are fastly moving in the field for settlement and emptying their treasure of quivers.35.

ਅੰਗ ਭੰਗ ਗਿਰੇ ਕਹੂੰ ਬਹੁਰੰਗ ਰੰਗਿਤ ਬਸਤ੍ਰ ॥
ang bhang gire kahoon bahurang rangit basatr |

Some where multi-coloured garments and chopped limbs are lying.

ਚਰਮ ਬਰਮ ਸੁਭੰ ਕਹੂੰ ਰਣੰ ਸਸਤ੍ਰ ਰੁ ਅਸਤ੍ਰ ॥
charam baram subhan kahoon ranan sasatr ru asatr |

Somewhere there are shields and armours and somewhere there only weapons.

ਮੁੰਡ ਤੁੰਡ ਧੁਜਾ ਪਤਾਕਾ ਟੂਕ ਟਾਕ ਅਰੇਕ ॥
mundd tundd dhujaa pataakaa ttook ttaak arek |

Somewhere there are heads, flags and ensigns scattered here and there.

ਜੂਝ ਜੂਝ ਪਰੇ ਸਬੈ ਅਰਿ ਬਾਚਿਯੋ ਨਹੀ ਏਕ ॥੩੬॥
joojh joojh pare sabai ar baachiyo nahee ek |36|

In the battlefield all the enemies have fallen down while fighting and none has been left alive.36.

ਕੋਪ ਕੈ ਮਹਿਖੇਸ ਦਾਨੋ ਧਾਈਯੋ ਤਿਹ ਕਾਲ ॥
kop kai mahikhes daano dhaaeeyo tih kaal |

Then in great ire, the demon Mahishasura marched forward.

ਅਸਤ੍ਰ ਸਸਤ੍ਰ ਸੰਭਾਰ ਸੂਰੋ ਰੂਪ ਕੈ ਬਿਕਰਾਲ ॥
asatr sasatr sanbhaar sooro roop kai bikaraal |

He appeared in a frightful form and held up all his weapons and arms.

ਕਾਲ ਪਾਣਿ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾਣ ਲੈ ਤਿਹ ਮਾਰਿਯੋ ਤਤਕਾਲ ॥
kaal paan kripaan lai tih maariyo tatakaal |

The goddess Kalka took her sword in her hand and killed him instantly.

ਜੋਤਿ ਜੋਤਿ ਬਿਖੈ ਮਿਲੀ ਤਜ ਬ੍ਰਹਮਰੰਧ੍ਰਿ ਉਤਾਲ ॥੩੭॥
jot jot bikhai milee taj brahamarandhr utaal |37|

His soul left Brahmrandhir (life-channel of Dasam Dyar) and merged in Divine Light.37.

ਦੋਹਰਾ ॥

DOHRA

ਮਹਿਖਾਸੁਰ ਕਹ ਮਾਰ ਕਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਫੁਲਤ ਭੀ ਜਗ ਮਾਇ ॥
mahikhaasur kah maar kar prafulat bhee jag maae |

After killing Mahishasura, the Mother of the world was greatly pleased.

ਤਾ ਦਿਨ ਤੇ ਮਹਿਖੇ ਬਲੈ ਦੇਤ ਜਗਤ ਸੁਖ ਪਾਇ ॥੩੮॥
taa din te mahikhe balai det jagat sukh paae |38|

And from that day the whole world gives the sacrifice of the animals for the attainment of peace.38.

ਇਤਿ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਬਚਿਤ੍ਰ ਨਾਟਕੇ ਚੰਡੀ ਚਰਿਤ੍ਰੇ ਮਹਿਖਾਸੁਰ ਬਧਹ ਪ੍ਰਥਮ ਧਿਆਇ ਸੰਪੂਰਨੰਮ ਸਤੁ ਸੁਭਮ ਸਤੁ ॥੧॥
eit sree bachitr naattake chanddee charitre mahikhaasur badhah pratham dhiaae sanpooranam sat subham sat |1|

Here ends the First Chapter entitled ‘Killing of Mahishasura’ of Chandi Charitra in BACHITTAR NATAK.1.

ਅਥ ਧੂਮਨੈਨ ਜੁਧ ਕਥਨ ॥

Here begins the description of the war with Dhumar Nain :

KULAK STANZA

ਦੇਵ ਸੁ ਤਬ ਗਾਜੀਯ ॥
dev su tab gaajeey |

ਅਨਹਦ ਬਾਜੀਯ ॥
anahad baajeey |

Then the goddess roared and there was continuous intonation.

ਭਈ ਬਧਾਈ ॥
bhee badhaaee |

ਸਭ ਸੁਖਦਾਈ ॥੧॥੩੯॥
sabh sukhadaaee |1|39|

All were delighted and felt comfortable.1.39.

ਦੁੰਦਭ ਬਾਜੇ ॥
dundabh baaje |

ਸਭ ਸੁਰ ਗਾਜੇ ॥
sabh sur gaaje |

The trumpents sounded and all the gods shouted.

ਕਰਤ ਬਡਾਈ ॥
karat baddaaee |

ਸੁਮਨ ਬ੍ਰਖਾਈ ॥੨॥੪੦॥
suman brakhaaee |2|40|

They eulogise the godess and shower flowers on her. 2.40.

ਕੀਨੀ ਬਹੁ ਅਰਚਾ ॥
keenee bahu arachaa |

ਜਸ ਧੁਨਿ ਚਰਚਾ ॥
jas dhun charachaa |

They worshipped the goddess in various ways and sang her poraises.

ਪਾਇਨ ਲਾਗੇ ॥
paaein laage |

ਸਭ ਦੁਖ ਭਾਗੇ ॥੩॥੪੧॥
sabh dukh bhaage |3|41|

They have touhed her feet and all their sorrows have ended.3.41.

ਗਾਏ ਜੈ ਕਰਖਾ ॥
gaae jai karakhaa |

ਪੁਹਪਨਿ ਬਰਖਾ ॥
puhapan barakhaa |

They sang the songs of victory and showered flowers.

ਸੀਸ ਨਿਵਾਏ ॥
sees nivaae |

ਸਭ ਸੁਖ ਪਾਏ ॥੪॥੪੨॥
sabh sukh paae |4|42|

They bowed their heads and obtained great comfort.4.42.

ਦੋਹਰਾ ॥

DOHRA

ਲੋਪ ਚੰਡਿਕਾ ਜੂ ਭਈ ਦੈ ਦੇਵਨ ਕੋ ਰਾਜੁ ॥
lop chanddikaa joo bhee dai devan ko raaj |

The goddess Chandi disappeared after bestowing kingdom on the gods.

ਬਹੁਰ ਸੁੰਭ ਨੈਸੁੰਭ ਦੁਐ ਦੈਤ ਬੜੇ ਸਿਰਤਾਜ ॥੫॥੪੩॥
bahur sunbh naisunbh duaai dait barre sirataaj |5|43|

Then after some time, both the demons kings came to power.5.43.

CHAUPAI

ਸੁੰਭ ਨਿਸੁੰਭ ਚੜੇ ਲੈ ਕੈ ਦਲ ॥
sunbh nisunbh charre lai kai dal |

Both Sumbh and Nisumbh marched with their forces.

ਅਰਿ ਅਨੇਕ ਜੀਤੇ ਜਿਨ ਜਲਿ ਥਲਿ ॥
ar anek jeete jin jal thal |

They conquered many enemies in water and on land.

ਦੇਵ ਰਾਜ ਕੋ ਰਾਜ ਛਿਨਾਵਾ ॥
dev raaj ko raaj chhinaavaa |

They seized the kingdom of Indra, the king of gods.

ਸੇਸਿ ਮੁਕਟ ਮਨਿ ਭੇਟ ਪਠਾਵਾ ॥੬॥੪੪॥
ses mukatt man bhett patthaavaa |6|44|

Sheshanaga sent his head-jewel as a gift.6.44.
