In the city of Lahore, there lived a goldsmith,
Whom people used to know as a big swindler.
When the Shah’s wife heard about him,
She called him to get the ornaments made.(1)

The name of the Shah’s wife was Chattar Prabha and the name of the goldsmith was Jaimal.
To make the ornaments he came to her house.(2)
Chaupaee
Whenever the goldsmith stakes (to steal),
As soon as the goldsmith tried to steal, the woman came to know of it.
He would not let even one stake go,
She would not let him play trick and he could not rob her wealth.(3)

When he had tried thousands of times but had not succeeded,
Then, remembering his son’s name, he pretended to cry. ( 4)
Chaupaee
(My) son named Bandan has died.
‘My son named Bandon has died and God has revoked all his bliss.’
Saying this, he hit his head on the ground
Saying so, he hit his head on the ground and, being in agony, wailed aloud.(5)
(God) also killed his only son.
‘He had only one son and that died too,’ thinking this, Chattar started to cry as well.
Only then did the goldsmith get a chance.
Instantly, he took advantage and, in the blow pipe, he stole the gold.(6)
He threw the hot rod (of gold) on the ground
He threw hot pipe on the ground and amalgamated gold with the dust,
They said that there is no (no) son in my house
And said, ‘There was no body left in my house, who could look after my ashes.’(7)
When the woman heard the (talk) of the goldsmith
When the woman ascertained goldsmith’s secret, she picked up a handful of dust and blew on his head saying,
O goldsmith! Listen, this ash is in your head
‘Listen, Goldsmith, this dust is over your head, because you have no son in your house.(8)

‘We receive the honours through our sons, who fight for our integrity.’
And she blew the dust in his eyes and, then, hid away his blow pipe.

Then the woman said thus
She said to him, ‘My husband has gone abroad.
That's why I draw Ausin (lines).
‘By drawing lines in the soil, I was guessing, when would my consort come.’(10)
