ਪੁਨਿ ਸੈਨ ਸਮਿਤ੍ਰ ਨਰੇਸ ਬਰੰ ॥
pun sain samitr nares baran |

ਜਿਹ ਜੁਧ ਲਯੋ ਮਦ੍ਰ ਦੇਸ ਹਰੰ ॥
jih judh layo madr des haran |

The mighty and glorious king Sumitra, was the conqueror of Madra Desha.

ਸੁਮਿਤ੍ਰਾ ਤਿਹ ਧਾਮ ਭਈ ਦੁਹਿਤਾ ॥
sumitraa tih dhaam bhee duhitaa |

ਜਿਹ ਜੀਤ ਲਈ ਸਸ ਸੂਰ ਪ੍ਰਭਾ ॥੧੨॥
jih jeet lee sas soor prabhaa |12|

He had a daughter named Sumitra in his home. That virgin was so winsome and radiant that she seemed to have conquered the luster of the sun and moon.12.

ਸੋਊ ਬਾਰਿ ਸਬੁਧ ਭਈ ਜਬ ਹੀ ॥
soaoo baar sabudh bhee jab hee |

ਅਵਧੇਸਹ ਚੀਨ ਬਰਿਓ ਤਬ ਹੀ ॥
avadhesah cheen bario tab hee |

When she grew of age, she also married the king of Oudh.

ਗਨ ਯਾਹ ਭਯੋ ਕਸਟੁਆਰ ਨ੍ਰਿਪੰ ॥
gan yaah bhayo kasattuaar nripan |

ਜਿਹ ਕੇਕਈ ਧਾਮ ਸੁ ਤਾਸੁ ਪ੍ਰਭੰ ॥੧੩॥
jih kekee dhaam su taas prabhan |13|

The same thin happened with the king of Kaikeya, who had glorious daughter named Kaiky.13.

ਇਨ ਤੇ ਗ੍ਰਹ ਮੋ ਸੁਤ ਜਉਨ ਥੀਓ ॥
ein te grah mo sut jaun theeo |

ਤਬ ਬੈਠ ਨਰੇਸ ਬਿਚਾਰ ਕੀਓ ॥
tab baitth nares bichaar keeo |

The king reflected (in his mind) about the son to be born to his daughter.

ਤਬ ਕੇਕਈ ਨਾਰ ਬਿਚਾਰ ਕਰੀ ॥
tab kekee naar bichaar karee |

ਜਿਹ ਤੇ ਸਸਿ ਸੂਰਜ ਸੋਭ ਧਰੀ ॥੧੪॥
jih te sas sooraj sobh dharee |14|

Kaikeyi also thoutht about it, she was extremely beautiful like the sun and moon.14.

ਤਿਹ ਬਯਾਹਤ ਮਾਗ ਲਏ ਦੁ ਬਰੰ ॥
tih bayaahat maag le du baran |

ਜਿਹ ਤੇ ਅਵਧੇਸ ਕੇ ਪ੍ਰਾਣ ਹਰੰ ॥
jih te avadhes ke praan haran |

On being married she asked for two boons from the king, which ultimately resulted in his death.

ਸਮਝੀ ਨ ਨਰੇਸਰ ਬਾਤ ਹੀਏ ॥
samajhee na naresar baat hee |

ਤਬ ਹੀ ਤਹ ਕੋ ਬਰ ਦੋਇ ਦੀਏ ॥੧੫॥
tab hee tah ko bar doe dee |15|

At that time, the king could not understand the mystery (of the boons) and gave his consent for them.15.

ਪੁਨ ਦੇਵ ਅਦੇਵਨ ਜੁਧ ਪਰੋ ॥
pun dev adevan judh paro |

ਜਹ ਜੁਧ ਘਣੋ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਆਪ ਕਰੋ ॥
jah judh ghano nrip aap karo |

Then once a war was waged between the gods and demons, in which the king gave a tough fight from the side of gods.

ਹਤ ਸਾਰਥੀ ਸਯੰਦਨ ਨਾਰ ਹਕਿਯੋ ॥
hat saarathee sayandan naar hakiyo |

ਯਹ ਕੌਤਕ ਦੇਖ ਨਰੇਸ ਚਕਿਯੋ ॥੧੬॥
yah kauatak dekh nares chakiyo |16|

Then once war charioteer of the king was killed, and instead kaikeyi drave the chariot on seeing this, the king was nonplussed.16.

ਪੁਨ ਰੀਝ ਦਏ ਦੋਊ ਤੀਅ ਬਰੰ ॥
pun reejh de doaoo teea baran |

ਚਿਤ ਮੋ ਸੁ ਬਿਚਾਰ ਕਛੂ ਨ ਕਰੰ ॥
chit mo su bichaar kachhoo na karan |

The king was pleased and gave other two boons, he did not have any distrust in his mind.

ਕਹੀ ਨਾਟਕ ਮਧ ਚਰਿਤ੍ਰ ਕਥਾ ॥
kahee naattak madh charitr kathaa |

ਜਯ ਦੀਨ ਸੁਰੇਸ ਨਰੇਸ ਜਥਾ ॥੧੭॥
jay deen sures nares jathaa |17|

How the king co-operated for the victory of Indra, the king of gods, this story has been told in the drama.17.

ਅਰਿ ਜੀਤਿ ਅਨੇਕ ਅਨੇਕ ਬਿਧੰ ॥
ar jeet anek anek bidhan |

ਸਭ ਕਾਜ ਨਰੇਸ੍ਵਰ ਕੀਨ ਸਿਧੰ ॥
sabh kaaj naresvar keen sidhan |

The king fulfilled his heart’s desires by conquering many enemies.

ਦਿਨ ਰੈਣ ਬਿਹਾਰਤ ਮਧਿ ਬਣੰ ॥
din rain bihaarat madh banan |

ਜਲ ਲੈਨ ਦਿਜਾਇ ਤਹਾ ਸ੍ਰਵਣੰ ॥੧੮॥
jal lain dijaae tahaa sravanan |18|

He passed his time mostly in the forsrts. Once a Brahmin named Sharvan Kumar was roaming there in search of water.18.

ਪਿਤ ਮਾਤ ਤਜੇ ਦੋਊ ਅੰਧ ਭੂਯੰ ॥
pit maat taje doaoo andh bhooyan |

ਗਹਿ ਪਾਤ੍ਰ ਚਲਿਯੋ ਜਲੁ ਲੈਨ ਸੁਯੰ ॥
geh paatr chaliyo jal lain suyan |

Leaving his blind parents at some spot, the son had come for water, holding the pitcher in his hand.

ਮੁਨਿ ਨੋ ਦਿਤ ਕਾਲ ਸਿਧਾਰ ਤਹਾ ॥
mun no dit kaal sidhaar tahaa |

ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਬੈਠ ਪਤਊਵਨ ਬਾਧ ਜਹਾ ॥੧੯॥
nrip baitth ptaoovan baadh jahaa |19|

That Brahmin sage was sent there by death, where the king was rresting in a tent.19.

ਭਭਕੰਤ ਘਟੰ ਅਤਿ ਨਾਦਿ ਹੁਅੰ ॥
bhabhakant ghattan at naad huan |

ਧੁਨਿ ਕਾਨ ਪਰੀ ਅਜ ਰਾਜ ਸੁਅੰ ॥
dhun kaan paree aj raaj suan |

There was sound of filling the pitcher with water, which was heard by the king.

ਗਹਿ ਪਾਣ ਸੁ ਬਾਣਹਿ ਤਾਨ ਧਨੰ ॥
geh paan su baaneh taan dhanan |

ਮ੍ਰਿਗ ਜਾਣ ਦਿਜੰ ਸਰ ਸੁਧ ਹਨੰ ॥੨੦॥
mrig jaan dijan sar sudh hanan |20|

The king fitted the arrow in the bow and pulled it and considering the Brahmin as a deer, he shot the arrow on him and killed him.20.

ਗਿਰ ਗਯੋ ਸੁ ਲਗੇ ਸਰ ਸੁਧ ਮੁਨੰ ॥
gir gayo su lage sar sudh munan |

ਨਿਸਰੀ ਮੁਖ ਤੇ ਹਹਕਾਰ ਧੁਨੰ ॥
nisaree mukh te hahakaar dhunan |

On being struck by the arrow, the ascetic fell down and there was sound of lamentation from his mouth.

ਮ੍ਰਿਗਨਾਤ ਕਹਾ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਜਾਇ ਲਹੈ ॥
mriganaat kahaa nrip jaae lahai |

ਦਿਜ ਦੇਖ ਦੋਊ ਕਰ ਦਾਤ ਗਹੈ ॥੨੧॥
dij dekh doaoo kar daat gahai |21|

For seeing the spot, where the deer had died, the king went there, but on seeing that Brahmin, he pressed his finger under his teeth in distress.21.

ਸਰਵਣ ਬਾਚਿ ॥
saravan baach |

Speech of Shravan :

ਕਛੁ ਪ੍ਰਾਨ ਰਹੇ ਤਿਹ ਮਧ ਤਨੰ ॥
kachh praan rahe tih madh tanan |

ਨਿਕਰੰਤ ਕਹਾ ਜੀਅ ਬਿਪ੍ਰ ਨ੍ਰਿਪੰ ॥
nikarant kahaa jeea bipr nripan |

There were still some life-breath in the body of Shravan. In his final life-breaths, the Brahmin said to the kind:

ਮੁਰ ਤਾਤ ਰੁ ਮਾਤ ਨ੍ਰਿਚਛ ਪਰੇ ॥
mur taat ru maat nrichachh pare |

ਤਿਹ ਪਾਨ ਪਿਆਇ ਨ੍ਰਿਪਾਧ ਮਰੇ ॥੨੨॥
tih paan piaae nripaadh mare |22|

“My mother and father are blind and are lying on that side. You go there and make them drink water, so that I may die peacefully.”22.

paadharree chhand |

PADDHRAI STANZA

ਬਿਨ ਚਛ ਭੂਪ ਦੋਊ ਤਾਤ ਮਾਤ ॥
bin chachh bhoop doaoo taat maat |

ਤਿਨ ਦੇਹ ਪਾਨ ਤੁਹ ਕਹੌਂ ਬਾਤ ॥
tin deh paan tuh kahauan baat |

“O king! both my parents are without sight, listen to me and give them water.
