CHAUPAI

ਅਬ ਆਇਸ ਜੋ ਹੋਇ ਸੁ ਕਰੋ ॥
ab aaeis jo hoe su karo |

Now do what is allowed.

ਹੇ ਰਿਖਿ ਤੁਮਰੇ ਪਾਇਨ ਪਰੋ ॥
he rikh tumare paaein paro |

“O sages! I fall at your feet, now I shall do whatever is desired by you

ਅਬ ਆਇਸ ਜੋ ਹੋਇ ਸੁ ਕੀਜੈ ॥
ab aaeis jo hoe su keejai |

Now I will do what is allowed.

ਹੇ ਰਿਖਿ ਬਾਤਹਿ ਸਤਿ ਪਤੀਜੈ ॥੨੩੯੧॥
he rikh baateh sat pateejai |2391|

O great sage! Trust my words, whatever you will ask me to do, I shall do that.”2391.

Speech of the sages:

ਤਬ ਮਿਲਿ ਰਿਖਿਨ ਇਹੈ ਜੀਅ ਧਾਰੋ ॥
tab mil rikhin ihai jeea dhaaro |

Then the sages together held this in mind

ਏਕ ਸਤ੍ਰੁ ਹੈ ਬਡੋ ਹਮਾਰੋ ॥
ek satru hai baddo hamaaro |

(And said to Balaram) We have a great enemy.

ਬਲਲ ਨਾਮ ਹਲਧਰ ਤਿਹ ਮਾਰੋ ॥
balal naam haladhar tih maaro |

(His) name is 'Balal'. O Balaram! kill him

ਮਾਨੋ ਤਿਹ ਪੈ ਕਾਲ ਪਚਾਰੋ ॥੨੩੯੨॥
maano tih pai kaal pachaaro |2392|

Then the sages thought in their mind that there was a very great enemy of their, whose name was Balal, “O Balram! destroy him, manifesting yourself as Death.”2392.

DOHRA

ਕਹਾ ਠਉਰ ਤਿਹ ਸਤ੍ਰੁ ਕੀ ਕਹੋ ਰਿਖਿਨ ਕੇ ਰਾਜ ॥
kahaa tthaur tih satru kee kaho rikhin ke raaj |

O Rishi Raj! Where is the location of that enemy?

ਮੋਹਿ ਬਤਾਵੈ ਜਾਹਿ ਕਉ ਤਾਹਿ ਹਨੋ ਅਉ ਆਜੁ ॥੨੩੯੩॥
mohi bataavai jaeh kau taeh hano aau aaj |2393|

“O sages! where does that enemy live? Tell me his place, so that I may kill him today.”2393.

CHAUPAI

ਤਬ ਇਕ ਰਿਖ ਨੈ ਜਾਇ ਬਤਾਯੋ ॥
tab ik rikh nai jaae bataayo |

Then a sage told the place,

ਤਹਾ ਠਉਰ ਹੋ ਸਤ੍ਰੁ ਬਨਾਯੋ ॥
tahaa tthaur ho satru banaayo |

Then one of the sages showed him the place, where the enemy was living

ਜਬ ਹਲਧਰਿ ਸੋ ਸਤ੍ਰ ਨਿਹਾਰਿਯੋ ॥
jab haladhar so satr nihaariyo |

When Balaram saw that enemy,

ਹਮ ਸੰਗਿ ਲਰੁ ਇਹ ਭਾਤਿ ਪਚਾਰਿਯੋ ॥੨੩੯੪॥
ham sang lar ih bhaat pachaariyo |2394|

Balram saw the enemy, and challenged him for fighting.2394.

ਸੁਨਤ ਬਚਨ ਤਬ ਸਤ੍ਰੁ ਰਿਸਾਯੋ ॥
sunat bachan tab satru risaayo |

Then the enemy became angry after hearing the word

ਹਾਥ ਗਾਗਨੋ ਯਾ ਪਰਿ ਆਯੋ ॥
haath gaagano yaa par aayo |

Hearing the challenge, the enemy was infuriated and on this side, these people, with the signs of their hands, told Balram everything

ਹਲਧਰਿ ਸੰਗਿ ਜੁਧ ਤਿਹ ਕੀਓ ॥
haladhar sang judh tih keeo |

He fought with Balaram,

ਜਿਹ ਸਮ ਠਉਰ ਬੀਰ ਨਹੀ ਬੀਓ ॥੨੩੯੫॥
jih sam tthaur beer nahee beeo |2395|

That enemy fought the battle with Balram, there has been no mughty warrior like Balram.2395.

ਬਹੁਤ ਜੁਧ ਤਿਹ ਠਾ ਦੁਹੂੰ ਧਾਰੋ ॥
bahut judh tih tthaa duhoon dhaaro |

Both of them fought a lot at that place

ਦੁਹੂੰ ਸੂਰ ਤੇ ਏਕ ਨ ਹਾਰੋ ॥
duhoon soor te ek na haaro |

A dreadful battle was fought at that place, and none of both the warriors was defeated

ਜਉ ਥਕਿ ਜਾਹਿ ਬੈਠ ਤਹ ਰਹੈ ॥
jau thak jaeh baitth tah rahai |

When they were tired, they would sit there

ਮੁਛਿਤ ਹੋਹਿ ਜੁਧੁ ਫਿਰ ਚਹੈ ॥੨੩੯੬॥
muchhit hohi judh fir chahai |2396|

They would sit when they felt tired and on becoming unconscious, they expressed their wish to continued fighting.2396.

ਫਿਰਿ ਦੋਊ ਗਾਜਿ ਗਾਜਿ ਰਨ ਪਾਰੈ ॥
fir doaoo gaaj gaaj ran paarai |

Then both of them go to war by sounding gauges.

ਆਪਸ ਬੀਚ ਗਦਾ ਬਹੁ ਮਾਰੈ ॥
aapas beech gadaa bahu maarai |

Then again they thundered and continued the fight and began to strike their maces on each other

ਠਾਢ ਰਹੈ ਥਿਰੁ ਪੈਗ ਨ ਟਰੈ ॥
tthaadt rahai thir paig na ttarai |

(Adol) stand still, do not step back.

ਮਾਨਹੁ ਰਿਸਿ ਪਰਬਤ ਦੋਊ ਲਰੈ ॥੨੩੯੭॥
maanahu ris parabat doaoo larai |2397|

They were stable and did not recede even one step, it seemed that two mountains were fighting against each other.2397.

ਦੋਊ ਭਟ ਅਭ੍ਰਨ ਜਿਉ ਗਾਜੈ ॥
doaoo bhatt abhran jiau gaajai |

Both heroes seem like substitutes.

ਬਚਨ ਸੁਨਤ ਜਿਨ ਕੇ ਜਮ ਲਾਜੈ ॥
bachan sunat jin ke jam laajai |

Both the warriors were thundering like clouds, hearing their voices, even Yama got fearful

ਅਤਿ ਹੀ ਬੀਰ ਰਿਸਹਿ ਮੈ ਭਰੈ ॥
at hee beer riseh mai bharai |

(Both) the brave are very full of anger

ਦੋਊ ਬੀਰ ਕ੍ਰੋਧ ਸੋ ਲਰੈ ॥੨੩੯੮॥
doaoo beer krodh so larai |2398|

Both the warriors were fighting with each other filled with anger.2398.

ਜਿਨ ਕਉਤੁਕ ਦੇਖਨ ਸੁਰ ਆਏ ॥
jin kautuk dekhan sur aae |

Whose death the gods have come to see,

ਭਾਤਿਨ ਭਾਤਿ ਬਿਵਾਨ ਬਨਾਏ ॥
bhaatin bhaat bivaan banaae |

In order to see this wonderful spectacle, even the gods came in their various types of air-vehicles

ਉਤ ਰੰਭਾਦਿਕ ਨਿਰਤਹਿ ਕਰੈ ॥
aut ranbhaadik nirateh karai |

There Rambha etc. (apachharas) dance

ਇਤ ਤੇ ਬੀਰ ਭੂਮਿ ਮੈ ਲਰੈ ॥੨੩੯੯॥
eit te beer bhoom mai larai |2399|

On that side the heavenly damsel like Rambha began to dance and on this side, these warriors were fighting on the earth.2399.

ਬਹੁਤ ਗਦਾ ਤਨ ਲਗੇ ਨ ਜਾਨੈ ॥
bahut gadaa tan lage na jaanai |

Many mace (beats) are applied to the body

ਮੁਖ ਤੇ ਮਾਰਹਿ ਮਾਰ ਬਖਾਨੈ ॥
mukh te maareh maar bakhaanai |

They were not caring for the blows of the maces and were uttering the shouts of “kill, kill” from their mouths

ਰਨ ਕੀ ਛਿਤ ਤੇ ਪੈਗੁ ਨ ਟਰੈ ॥
ran kee chhit te paig na ttarai |

They don't even take a step away from the battlefield

ਰੀਝਿ ਰੀਝਿ ਦੋਊ ਭਟ ਲਰੈ ॥੨੪੦੦॥
reejh reejh doaoo bhatt larai |2400|

They were not receding even one step in the battlefield and both of them were fighting delightfully.2400.

SWAYYA

ਜੁਧੁ ਭਯੋ ਬਹੁਤੋ ਤਿਹ ਠਾ ਤਬ ਮੂਸਲ ਕਉ ਮੁਸਲੀ ਜੂ ਸੰਭਾਰਿਯੋ ॥
judh bhayo bahuto tih tthaa tab moosal kau musalee joo sanbhaariyo |

At that place (when) there was a lot of war, then Balram ji took over the musal.

ਕੈ ਬਲ ਹਾਥਨ ਦੋਊਨ ਕੇ ਕਬਿ ਸ੍ਯਾਮ ਕਹੈ ਤਕਿ ਘਾਹਿ ਪ੍ਰਹਾਰਯੋ ॥
kai bal haathan doaoon ke kab sayaam kahai tak ghaeh prahaarayo |

After the continuation of war for a long time, Balram held his huge mace and powerfully struck it with both the hands on the enemy

ਲਾਗਤ ਘਾ ਇਹ ਕੈ ਮਰਿ ਗਯੋ ਅਰਿ ਅੰਤਕ ਕੇ ਫੁਨਿ ਧਾਮਿ ਸਿਧਾਰਿਯੋ ॥
laagat ghaa ih kai mar gayo ar antak ke fun dhaam sidhaariyo |

When the blow struck him, he died and went to the next world
