ਜੇ ਜੇ ਬਾਦਿ ਕਰਤ ਹੰਕਾਰਾ ॥
je je baad karat hankaaraa |

Those who argue with arrogance,

ਤਿਨ ਤੇ ਭਿੰਨ ਰਹਤ ਕਰਤਾਰਾ ॥
tin te bhin rahat karataaraa |

Those who quarrel in ego, they are far removed from the Lord.

ਬੇਦ ਕਤੇਬ ਬਿਖੈ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਹੀ ॥
bed kateb bikhai har naahee |

There is no God in the Vedas.

ਜਾਨ ਲੇਹੁ ਹਰਿ ਜਨ ਮਨ ਮਾਹੀ ॥੬੧॥
jaan lehu har jan man maahee |61|

O men of God! Understand this that the Lord doth not reside in Vedas and katebs. 61.

ਆਂਖ ਮੂੰਦਿ ਕੋਊ ਡਿੰਭ ਦਿਖਾਵੈ ॥
aankh moond koaoo ddinbh dikhaavai |

If one commits hypocrisy with closed eyes,

ਆਂਧਰ ਕੀ ਪਦਵੀ ਕਹ ਪਾਵੈ ॥
aandhar kee padavee kah paavai |

He, who exhibits heresy in closing his eyes, attains the state of blindness.

ਆਂਖਿ ਮੀਚ ਮਗੁ ਸੂਝਿ ਨ ਜਾਈ ॥
aankh meech mag soojh na jaaee |

By narrowing the eyes (when) the way is not visible

ਤਾਹਿ ਅਨੰਤ ਮਿਲੈ ਕਿਮ ਭਾਈ ॥੬੨॥
taeh anant milai kim bhaaee |62|

By closing the eyes one cannot know the path, how can then, O brother! He meet the Infinite Lord?62.

ਬਹੁ ਬਿਸਥਾਰ ਕਹ ਲਉ ਕੋਈ ਕਹੈ ॥
bahu bisathaar kah lau koee kahai |

No one can say in detail

ਸਮਝਤ ਬਾਤਿ ਥਕਤਿ ਹੁਐ ਰਹੈ ॥
samajhat baat thakat huaai rahai |

To what extent, the details be given? When one understands, he feels tired.

ਰਸਨਾ ਧਰੈ ਕਈ ਜੋ ਕੋਟਾ ॥
rasanaa dharai kee jo kottaa |

If one assumes a million tongues,

ਤਦਪਿ ਗਨਤ ਤਿਹ ਪਰਤ ਸੁ ਤੋਟਾ ॥੬੩॥
tadap ganat tih parat su tottaa |63|

If one is blessed with millions of tongues, even then he feels them short in number, (while singing the Praises of the Lord)63.

DOHRA

ਜਬ ਆਇਸੁ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕੋ ਭਯੋ ਜਨਮੁ ਧਰਾ ਜਗ ਆਇ ॥
jab aaeis prabh ko bhayo janam dharaa jag aae |

When the Lord Willed, I was born on this earth.

ਅਬ ਮੈ ਕਥਾ ਸੰਛੇਪ ਤੇ ਸਬਹੂੰ ਕਹਤ ਸੁਨਾਇ ॥੬੪॥
ab mai kathaa sanchhep te sabahoon kahat sunaae |64|

Now I shall narrate briefly my own story.64.

ਇਤਿ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਬਚਿਤ੍ਰ ਨਾਟਕ ਗ੍ਰੰਥੇ ਮਮ ਆਗਿਆ ਕਾਲ ਜਗ ਪ੍ਰਵੇਸ ਕਰਨੰ ਨਾਮ ਖਸਟਮੋ ਧਯਾਇ ਸਮਾਪਤਮ ਸਤੁ ਸੁਭਮ ਸਤੁ ॥੬॥੨੭੯॥

ਮੁਰ ਪਿਤ ਪੂਰਬਿ ਕਿਯਸਿ ਪਯਾਨਾ ॥
mur pit poorab kiyas payaanaa |

My father (ie Guru Teg Bahadur) went to the East

ਭਾਤਿ ਭਾਤਿ ਕੇ ਤੀਰਥਿ ਨ੍ਰਹਾਨਾ ॥
bhaat bhaat ke teerath nrahaanaa |

My father proceeded towards the east and visited several places of pilgrimage.

ਜਬ ਹੀ ਜਾਤਿ ਤ੍ਰਿਬੇਣੀ ਭਏ ॥
jab hee jaat tribenee bhe |

When they reached Triveni (Prayag),

ਪੁੰਨ ਦਾਨ ਦਿਨ ਕਰਤ ਬਿਤਏ ॥੧॥
pun daan din karat bite |1|

When he went to Triveni (Prayag), he passed his days in act of charity.1.

ਤਹੀ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਸ ਹਮਾਰਾ ਭਯੋ ॥
tahee prakaas hamaaraa bhayo |

It was there that we were born (ie conceived).

ਪਟਨਾ ਸਹਰ ਬਿਖੈ ਭਵ ਲਯੋ ॥
pattanaa sahar bikhai bhav layo |

I was conceived there and took birth at Patna.

ਮਦ੍ਰ ਦੇਸ ਹਮ ਕੋ ਲੇ ਆਏ ॥
madr des ham ko le aae |

(from the east) brought us to Madra Desh (Punjab).

ਭਾਤਿ ਭਾਤਿ ਦਾਈਅਨ ਦੁਲਰਾਏ ॥੨॥
bhaat bhaat daaeean dularaae |2|

Whence I was brought to Madra Desh (Punjab), where I was caressed by various nurses.2

ਕੀਨੀ ਅਨਿਕ ਭਾਤਿ ਤਨ ਰਛਾ ॥
keenee anik bhaat tan rachhaa |

(My) body was preserved in many ways

ਦੀਨੀ ਭਾਤਿ ਭਾਤਿ ਕੀ ਸਿਛਾ ॥
deenee bhaat bhaat kee sichhaa |

I was given physical protection in various ways and given various types of education.

ਜਬ ਹਮ ਧਰਮ ਕਰਮ ਮੋ ਆਇ ॥
jab ham dharam karam mo aae |

When we were able (to understand) Dharma Karma

ਦੇਵ ਲੋਕਿ ਤਬ ਪਿਤਾ ਸਿਧਾਏ ॥੩॥
dev lok tab pitaa sidhaae |3|

When I began to perform the act of Dharma (righteousness), my father departed for his heavenly abode.3.

ਅਥ ਰਾਜ ਸਾਜ ਕਥਨੰ ॥

Here begins the Description of the Magnificence of Authority:

ਰਾਜ ਸਾਜ ਹਮ ਪਰ ਜਬ ਆਯੋ ॥
raaj saaj ham par jab aayo |

When the responsibility of Gurgadi (Raj) fell on us

ਜਥਾ ਸਕਤਿ ਤਬ ਧਰਮੁ ਚਲਾਯੋ ॥
jathaa sakat tab dharam chalaayo |

When I obtained the position of responsibility, I performed the religious acts to the best of my ability.

ਭਾਤਿ ਭਾਤਿ ਬਨਿ ਖੇਲਿ ਸਿਕਾਰਾ ॥
bhaat bhaat ban khel sikaaraa |

Various types of hunting were done in Bun

ਮਾਰੇ ਰੀਛ ਰੋਝ ਝੰਖਾਰਾ ॥੧॥
maare reechh rojh jhankhaaraa |1|

I went hunting various kinds of animals in the forest and killed bears, nilgais (blue bulls) and elks.1.

ਦੇਸ ਚਾਲ ਹਮ ਤੇ ਪੁਨਿ ਭਈ ॥
des chaal ham te pun bhee |

Then we had to leave the country (Anandpur).

ਸਹਰ ਪਾਵਟਾ ਕੀ ਸੁਧਿ ਲਈ ॥
sahar paavattaa kee sudh lee |

Then I left my home and went to place named Paonta.

ਕਾਲਿੰਦ੍ਰੀ ਤਟਿ ਕਰੇ ਬਿਲਾਸਾ ॥
kaalindree tatt kare bilaasaa |

(There) on the banks of the river Jamna, (many) kautakas were performed

ਅਨਿਕ ਭਾਤਿ ਕੇ ਪੇਖਿ ਤਮਾਸਾ ॥੨॥
anik bhaat ke pekh tamaasaa |2|

I enjoyed my stay on the banks of Kalindri (Yamuna) and saw amusement of various kind2.

ਤਹ ਕੇ ਸਿੰਘ ਘਨੇ ਚੁਨਿ ਮਾਰੇ ॥
tah ke singh ghane chun maare |

From there (from the forest) many lions were selected and killed

ਰੋਝ ਰੀਛ ਬਹੁ ਭਾਤਿ ਬਿਦਾਰੇ ॥
rojh reechh bahu bhaat bidaare |

There I killed may lions, nilgais and bears.

ਫਤੇ ਸਾਹ ਕੋਪਾ ਤਬਿ ਰਾਜਾ ॥
fate saah kopaa tab raajaa |

Then Fate Shah Raja became angry (with us),

ਲੋਹ ਪਰਾ ਹਮ ਸੋ ਬਿਨੁ ਕਾਜਾ ॥੩॥
loh paraa ham so bin kaajaa |3|

On this the king Fateh Shah become angry and fought with me without any reason.3.

ਭੁਜੰਗ ਪ੍ਰਯਾਤ ਛੰਦ ॥
bhujang prayaat chhand |

BHUJANG PRAYAAT STANZA

ਤਹਾ ਸਾਹ ਸ੍ਰੀਸਾਹ ਸੰਗ੍ਰਾਮ ਕੋਪੇ ॥
tahaa saah sreesaah sangraam kope |

In the war, Mr. Sango Shah got angry

ਪੰਚੋ ਬੀਰ ਬੰਕੇ ਪ੍ਰਿਥੀ ਪਾਇ ਰੋਪੇ ॥
pancho beer banke prithee paae rope |

There Sri Shah (Sango Shah) become enraged and all the five warriors stood firmly in the battlefield.

ਹਠੀ ਜੀਤਮਲੰ ਸੁ ਗਾਜੀ ਗੁਲਾਬੰ ॥
hatthee jeetamalan su gaajee gulaaban |

Jeet Mal Hatti was a warrior and Gulab (Rai) was a supreme warrior.

ਰਣੰ ਦੇਖੀਐ ਰੰਗ ਰੂਪੰ ਸਹਾਬੰ ॥੪॥
ranan dekheeai rang roopan sahaaban |4|

Including the tenacious Jit Mal and the desparate hero Gulab, whose faces were red with ire, in the field.4.

ਹਠਿਯੋ ਮਾਹਰੀਚੰਦਯੰ ਗੰਗਰਾਮੰ ॥
hatthiyo maahareechandayan gangaraaman |

Mahri Chand and Ganga Ram fought hard,

ਜਿਨੇ ਕਿਤੀਯੰ ਜਿਤੀਯੰ ਫੌਜ ਤਾਮੰ ॥
jine kiteeyan jiteeyan fauaj taaman |

The persistent Mahari Chand and Ganga Ram, who had defeated lot of forces.

ਕੁਪੇ ਲਾਲ ਚੰਦੰ ਕੀਏ ਲਾਲ ਰੂਪੰ ॥
kupe laal chandan kee laal roopan |

Lal Chand got angry and turned dark red

ਜਿਨੈ ਗੰਜੀਯੰ ਗਰਬ ਸਿੰਘ ਅਨੂਪੰ ॥੫॥
jinai ganjeeyan garab singh anoopan |5|

Lal Chand was red with anger, who had shattered pride of several lion-like heroes.5.

ਕੁਪਿਯੋ ਮਾਹਰੂ ਕਾਹਰੂ ਰੂਪ ਧਾਰੇ ॥
kupiyo maaharoo kaaharoo roop dhaare |

Mahri Chand got angry and assumed a terrible form

ਜਿਨੈ ਖਾਨ ਖਾਵੀਨੀਯੰ ਖੇਤ ਮਾਰੇ ॥
jinai khaan khaaveeneeyan khet maare |

Maharu got enraged and with frightening expression killed brave Khans in the battlefield.

ਕੁਪਿਓ ਦੇਵਤੇਸੰ ਦਯਾਰਾਮ ਜੁਧੰ ॥
kupio devatesan dayaaraam judhan |

Daya Ram Brahmin also got very angry in the war

ਕੀਯੰ ਦ੍ਰੋਣ ਕੀ ਜਿਉ ਮਹਾ ਜੁਧ ਸੁਧੰ ॥੬॥
keeyan dron kee jiau mahaa judh sudhan |6|

The godly Daya Ram, filled with great ire, fought very heroically in the field like Dronacharya.6.

ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾਲ ਕੋਪੀਯੰ ਕੁਤਕੋ ਸੰਭਾਰੀ ॥
kripaal kopeeyan kutako sanbhaaree |

(Mahant) Kripal Das got angry and took the stick

ਹਠੀ ਖਾਨ ਹਯਾਤ ਕੇ ਸੀਸ ਝਾਰੀ ॥
hatthee khaan hayaat ke sees jhaaree |

Kirpal in rage, rushed with his mace and struck it on the head of the tenacious Hayaat Khan.

ਉਠੀ ਛਿਛਿ ਇਛੰ ਕਢਾ ਮੇਝ ਜੋਰੰ ॥
autthee chhichh ichhan kadtaa mejh joran |

With the force of which he removed the fruit (of Hayat Khan) and his legs rose like this

ਮਨੋ ਮਾਖਨੰ ਮਟਕੀ ਕਾਨ੍ਰਹ ਫੋਰੰ ॥੭॥
mano maakhanan mattakee kaanrah foran |7|

With all his might, he caused the marrow flow out of his head, which splashed like the butter spattering out of the pitcher of butter broken by lord Krishan.7.

ਤਹਾ ਨੰਦ ਚੰਦੰ ਕੀਯੋ ਕੋਪ ਭਾਰੋ ॥
tahaa nand chandan keeyo kop bhaaro |

There (the Diwan at the time) Nand Chand was very angry

ਲਗਾਈ ਬਰਛੀ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾਣੰ ਸੰਭਾਰੋ ॥
lagaaee barachhee kripaanan sanbhaaro |

Then Namd Chand, in fierce rage, wielding his sword struck it with force.

ਤੁਟੀ ਤੇਗ ਤ੍ਰਿਖੀ ਕਢੇ ਜਮਦਢੰ ॥
tuttee teg trikhee kadte jamadadtan |

(Fighting and fighting) the sharp sword broke and he took out the dagger.

ਹਠੀ ਰਾਖੀਯੰ ਲਜ ਬੰਸੰ ਸਨਢੰ ॥੮॥
hatthee raakheeyan laj bansan sanadtan |8|

But it broke. Then he drew his dagger and the tenacious warrior saved the honour of the Sodhi clan.8.

ਤਹਾ ਮਾਤਲੇਯੰ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾਲੰ ਕ੍ਰੁਧੰ ॥
tahaa maataleyan kripaalan krudhan |

Then Mama Kripal got angry

ਛਕਿਯੋ ਛੋਭ ਛਤ੍ਰੀ ਕਰਿਯੋ ਜੁਧ ਸੁਧੰ ॥
chhakiyo chhobh chhatree kariyo judh sudhan |

Then the Maternal uncle Kirpal, in great ire, manifested the war-feats like a true Kshatriya.

ਸਹੇ ਦੇਹ ਆਪੰ ਮਹਾਬੀਰ ਬਾਣੰ ॥
sahe deh aapan mahaabeer baanan |

That great hero bore arrows on his body

ਕਰਿਯੋ ਖਾਨ ਬਾਨੀਨ ਖਾਲੀ ਪਲਾਣੰ ॥੯॥
kariyo khaan baaneen khaalee palaanan |9|

The great hero was struck by an arrow, but he caused the brave Khan to fall from the saddle.9.

ਹਠਿਯੋ ਸਾਹਿਬੰ ਚੰਦ ਖੇਤੰ ਖਤ੍ਰਿਆਣੰ ॥
hatthiyo saahiban chand khetan khatriaanan |

Hathi Sahib Chand (fought and fought) with full courage.

ਹਨੇ ਖਾਨ ਖੂਨੀ ਖੁਰਾਸਾਨ ਭਾਨੰ ॥
hane khaan khoonee khuraasaan bhaanan |

Sahib Chand, the valiant Kshatriya, killed a bloody Khan of Khorasan.
