ਮਾਰਿ ਹਰਉਲ ਭਜਾਇ ਦਏ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਗੋਲ ਕੇ ਮਧਿ ਪਰਿਯੋ ਤਬ ਧਾਯੋ ॥
maar hraul bhajaae de nrip gol ke madh pariyo tab dhaayo |

He fell upon the group of kings and with his plough, caused all of them to run away

ਏਕ ਕੀਏ ਸੁ ਰਥੀ ਬਿਰਥੀ ਅਰਿ ਏਕਨ ਕੋ ਬਹੁ ਘਾਇਨ ਘਾਯੋ ॥
ek kee su rathee birathee ar ekan ko bahu ghaaein ghaayo |

They have made the charioteers without chariots and inflicted many wounds on them.

ਸ੍ਯਾਮ ਭਨੈ ਸਬ ਸੂਰਨ ਕੋ ਇਹ ਭਾਤਿ ਹਲੀ ਪੁਰੁਖਤ ਦਿਖਾਯੋ ॥੧੮੩੫॥
sayaam bhanai sab sooran ko ih bhaat halee purukhat dikhaayo |1835|

He deprived many chariot-riders of their chariots and wounded ,many of them. The poet Shyam says that in this way Balram exhibited his bravery to the warriours.1835.

ਕ੍ਰੋਧ ਭਰਿਯੋ ਰਨ ਮੈ ਅਤਿ ਕ੍ਰੂਰ ਸੁ ਪਾਨ ਕੇ ਬੀਚ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾਨ ਲੀਏ ॥
krodh bhariyo ran mai at kraoor su paan ke beech kripaan lee |

(Balram) filled with anger and took a very terrible form in Ran, holding a kirpan in his hand.

ਅਭਿਮਾਨ ਸੋ ਡੋਲਤ ਹੈ ਰਨ ਭੀਤਰ ਆਨ ਕੋ ਆਨਤ ਹੈ ਨ ਹੀਏ ॥
abhimaan so ddolat hai ran bheetar aan ko aanat hai na hee |

Balram is proudly moving in the war-arena, filled with me and taking his sword in his hand, he is not caring for anyone else

ਅਤਿ ਹੀ ਰਸ ਰੁਦ੍ਰ ਕੇ ਬੀਚ ਛਕਿਓ ਕਬਿ ਸ੍ਯਾਮ ਕਹੈ ਮਦ ਪਾਨਿ ਪੀਏ ॥
at hee ras rudr ke beech chhakio kab sayaam kahai mad paan pee |

There is so much bitterness in the raudra rasa, Shyam poets say, (as if) drunk.

ਬਲਭਦ੍ਰ ਸੰਘਾਰਤ ਸਤ੍ਰ ਫਿਰੈ ਜਮ ਕੋ ਸੁ ਭਯਾਨਕ ਰੂਪ ਕੀਏ ॥੧੮੩੬॥
balabhadr sanghaarat satr firai jam ko su bhayaanak roop kee |1836|

He looks like the one intoxicated with wine and filled with ire and is killing the enemies manifesting himself like the dreadful Yama.1836.

ਸੀਸ ਕਟੇ ਅਰਿ ਬੀਰਨ ਕੇ ਅਤਿ ਹੀ ਮਨ ਭੀਤਰ ਕੋਪ ਭਰੇ ਹੈ ॥
sees katte ar beeran ke at hee man bheetar kop bhare hai |

In great fury, the heads of the enemies were cut down

ਕੇਤਨ ਕੇ ਪਦ ਪਾਨ ਕਟੇ ਅਰਿ ਕੇਤਨ ਕੇ ਤਨ ਘਾਇ ਕਰੇ ਹੈ ॥
ketan ke pad paan katte ar ketan ke tan ghaae kare hai |

The hands and feet of many have been cut and there are wounds on other parts of the body of many warriors

ਜੇ ਬਲਵੰਡ ਕਹਾਵਤ ਹੈ ਨਿਜ ਠਉਰ ਕੋ ਛਾਡਿ ਕੈ ਦਉਰਿ ਪਰੇ ਹੈ ॥
je balavandd kahaavat hai nij tthaur ko chhaadd kai daur pare hai |

Those who call themselves strong, (they too) have fled from their place.

ਤੀਰ ਸਰੀਰਨ ਬੀਚ ਲਗੇ ਭਟ ਮਾਨਹੁ ਸੇਹ ਸਰੂਪ ਧਰੇ ਹੈ ॥੧੮੩੭॥
teer sareeran beech lage bhatt maanahu seh saroop dhare hai |1837|

Those who called themselves as powerful ones have left their places and fled and the warriors inflicted with arrows look like porcupine.1837.

ਇਤ ਐਸੇ ਹਲਾਯੁਧ ਜੁਧ ਕੀਯੋ ਉਤਿ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਬ੍ਰਿਜਭੂਖਨ ਕੋਪੁ ਬਢਾਯੋ ॥
eit aaise halaayudh judh keeyo ut sree brijabhookhan kop badtaayo |

Here Balarama has waged such a war and there Sri Krishna has increased anger (in the mind).

ਜੋ ਭਟ ਸਾਮੁਹਿ ਆਇ ਗਯੋ ਸੋਊ ਏਕ ਹੀ ਬਾਨ ਸੋ ਮਾਰਿ ਗਿਰਾਯੋ ॥
jo bhatt saamuhi aae gayo soaoo ek hee baan so maar giraayo |

On this side Balram waged war like this and on that side Krishna, getting enraged, knocked down anyone with a single arrow, whoever confronted him

ਅਉਰ ਜਿਤੇ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਸੈਨ ਹੁਤੇ ਸੁ ਨਿਮੇਖ ਬਿਖੈ ਜਮ ਧਾਮਿ ਪਠਾਯੋ ॥
aaur jite nrip sain hute su nimekh bikhai jam dhaam patthaayo |

All the army of the king that was there, he despatched it to the abode of Yama in an instant

ਕਾਹੂੰ ਨ ਧੀਰ ਧਰਿਯੋ ਚਿਤ ਮੈ ਭਜਿ ਗੈ ਜਬ ਸ੍ਯਾਮ ਇਤੋ ਰਨ ਪਾਯੋ ॥੧੮੩੮॥
kaahoon na dheer dhariyo chit mai bhaj gai jab sayaam ito ran paayo |1838|

Seeing such a fighting of Krishna, all the enemies, forsaking their endurance, ran away.1838.

ਜੇ ਭਟ ਲਾਜ ਭਰੇ ਅਤਿ ਹੀ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕਾਰਜ ਜਾਨ ਕੇ ਕੋਪ ਬਢਾਏ ॥
je bhatt laaj bhare at hee prabh kaaraj jaan ke kop badtaae |

The warriors, who were full of pride, have become angry, perceiving the work of (their) lord.

ਸੰਕਹਿ ਤ੍ਯਾਗ ਅਸੰਕਤ ਹੁਇ ਸੁ ਬਜਾਇ ਨਿਸਾਨਨ ਕੋ ਸਮੁਹਾਏ ॥
sankeh tayaag asankat hue su bajaae nisaanan ko samuhaae |

Those warriors who were feeling ashamed, they also now with the object of defeating Krishna, got infuriated and forsaking their hesitation and playing on their war-drums, came in front of him

ਸਾਰੰਗ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਬ੍ਰਿਜਨਾਥ ਲੈ ਹਾਥਿ ਸੁ ਖੈਚ ਚਢਾਇ ਕੈ ਬਾਨ ਚਲਾਏ ॥
saarang sree brijanaath lai haath su khaich chadtaae kai baan chalaae |

Shri Krishna has shot arrows with a bow in his hand.

ਸ੍ਯਾਮ ਭਨੈ ਬਲਬੰਡ ਬਡੇ ਸਰ ਏਕ ਹੀ ਏਕ ਸੋ ਮਾਰਿ ਗਿਰਾਏ ॥੧੮੩੯॥
sayaam bhanai balabandd badde sar ek hee ek so maar giraae |1839|

Krishna holding his bow in his hand discharged his arrows and he knocked down a hundred enemies with single arrow.1839.

CHAUPAI

ਜਰਾਸੰਧਿ ਕੋ ਦਲੁ ਹਰਿ ਮਾਰਿਯੋ ॥
jaraasandh ko dal har maariyo |

Jarasandha's army has been killed by Krishna

ਭੂਪਤਿ ਕੋ ਸਬ ਗਰਬ ਉਤਾਰਿਯੋ ॥
bhoopat ko sab garab utaariyo |

The army of Jarasandh was knocked down by Krishna and in this way pulverized the pride of the king

ਅਬਿ ਕਹੈ ਕਉਨ ਉਪਾਵਹਿ ਕਰੋ ॥
ab kahai kaun upaaveh karo |

(The king started thinking in his mind that) Now tell me, what should I do?

ਰਨ ਮੈ ਆਜ ਜੂਝ ਹੀ ਮਰੋ ॥੧੮੪੦॥
ran mai aaj joojh hee maro |1840|

The king thought that then what step should he taken, and how should he die in the war on that day?1840.

ਇਉ ਚਿਤਿ ਚਿੰਤ ਧਨੁਖ ਕਰਿ ਗਹਿਯੋ ॥
eiau chit chint dhanukh kar gahiyo |

Thinking like this in Chit, he held the bow in his hand

ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕੈ ਸੰਗਿ ਜੂਝ ਪੁਨਿ ਚਹਿਯੋ ॥
prabh kai sang joojh pun chahiyo |

Thinking thus, he caught hold of his bow in his hand and also thought of fighting with Krishna again

ਪਹਰਿਯੋ ਕਵਚ ਸਾਮੁਹੇ ਧਾਯੋ ॥
pahariyo kavach saamuhe dhaayo |

He has come forward wearing armor.

ਸ੍ਯਾਮ ਭਨੈ ਮਨਿ ਕੋਪ ਬਢਾਯੋ ॥੧੮੪੧॥
sayaam bhanai man kop badtaayo |1841|

He wore his armour and came in front of Krishna.1841.

ਦੋਹਰਾ ॥

DOHRA

ਜਰਾਸੰਧਿ ਰਨ ਭੂਮਿ ਮੈ ਬਾਨ ਕਮਾਨ ਚਢਾਇ ॥
jaraasandh ran bhoom mai baan kamaan chadtaae |

Jarasandha has put an arrow on the bow in the battlefield.

ਸ੍ਯਾਮ ਭਨੈ ਤਬ ਕ੍ਰਿਸਨ ਸੋ ਬੋਲਿਯੋ ਭਉਹ ਤਨਾਇ ॥੧੮੪੨॥
sayaam bhanai tab krisan so boliyo bhauh tanaae |1842|

Jarasandh then taking up his bow and arrows and wearing his crown, said thus to Krishna,1842

ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਜਰਾਸੰਧਿ ਬਾਚ ਕਾਨ੍ਰਹ ਸੋ ॥
nrip jaraasandh baach kaanrah so |

Speech of Jarasandh addressed to Krishna:

ਸਵੈਯਾ ॥
savaiyaa |

SWAYYA

ਜੋ ਬਲ ਹੈ ਤੁਮ ਮੈ ਨੰਦ ਨੰਦਨ ਸੋ ਅਬ ਪਉਰਖ ਮੋਹਿ ਦਿਖਈਯੈ ॥
jo bal hai tum mai nand nandan so ab paurakh mohi dikheeyai |

“O Krishna! if you have any power and strength, then show it to me

ਠਾਢੋ ਕਹਾ ਮੁਹਿ ਓਰ ਨਿਹਾਰਤ ਮਾਰਤ ਹੋ ਸਰ ਭਾਜਿ ਨ ਜਈਯੈ ॥
tthaadto kahaa muhi or nihaarat maarat ho sar bhaaj na jeeyai |

What are you looking at towards me, standing there? I am going to hit you with my arrow, do not run away anywhere

ਕੈ ਅਬ ਡਾਰਿ ਹਥਿਆਰ ਗਵਾਰ ਸੰਭਾਰ ਕੈ ਮੋ ਸੰਗਿ ਜੂਝ ਮਚਈਯੈ ॥
kai ab ddaar hathiaar gavaar sanbhaar kai mo sang joojh macheeyai |

“O foolish Yadava! surrender yourself otherwise fight with me with great caution

ਕਾਹੇ ਕਉ ਪ੍ਰਾਨ ਤਜੈ ਰਨ ਮੈ ਬਨ ਮੈ ਸੁਖ ਸੋ ਬਛ ਗਾਇ ਚਰਈਯੈ ॥੧੮੪੩॥
kaahe kau praan tajai ran mai ban mai sukh so bachh gaae chareeyai |1843|

Why do you want to end your life in the war? Go and graze your cows and calves peacefully in the forest.”1843.

ਬ੍ਰਿਜਰਾਜ ਮਨੈ ਕਬਿ ਸ੍ਯਾਮ ਭਨੈ ਉਹ ਭੂਪ ਕੇ ਬੈਨ ਸੁਨੇ ਜਬ ਐਸੇ ॥
brijaraaj manai kab sayaam bhanai uh bhoop ke bain sune jab aaise |

Poet Shyam describes the (state) of Sri Krishna's mind when he heard such words from the king.

ਸ੍ਰੀ ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਉਰ ਮੈ ਰਿਸ ਯੌ ਪ੍ਰਗਟੀ ਪਰਸੇ ਘ੍ਰਿਤ ਪਾਵਕ ਤੈਸੇ ॥
sree har ke ur mai ris yau pragattee parase ghrit paavak taise |

When Krishna heard these words of the king, the anger erupted in his mind like the fire flaming up on putting ghee in it,

ਜਿਉ ਮ੍ਰਿਗਰਾਜ ਸ੍ਰਿਗਾਵਲ ਕੀ ਕੂਕ ਸੁਨੇ ਬਨਿ ਹੂਕ ਉਠੇ ਮਨ ਵੈਸੇ ॥
jiau mrigaraaj srigaaval kee kook sune ban hook utthe man vaise |

Just as a lion roars in a cage after hearing the jackal's cry, so is the state of Sri Krishna's mind.

ਯੌ ਅਟਕੀ ਅਰਿ ਕੀ ਬਤੀਯਾ ਖਟਕੈ ਪਗ ਮੈ ਅਟਿ ਕੰਟਕ ਜੈਸੇ ॥੧੮੪੪॥
yau attakee ar kee bateeyaa khattakai pag mai att kanttak jaise |1844|

“O like the lion gets infuriated on hearing the howls of jackals, or like the mind getting angry on thorns being struck into the clothes.1844.

ਕ੍ਰੁਧਤ ਹ੍ਵੈ ਬ੍ਰਿਜਰਾਜ ਇਤੈ ਸੁ ਘਨੇ ਲਖਿ ਕੈ ਤਿਹ ਬਾਨ ਚਲਾਏ ॥
krudhat hvai brijaraaj itai su ghane lakh kai tih baan chalaae |

On this side, Krishna getting infuriated, discharged many arrows

ਕੋਪਿ ਉਤੇ ਧਨੁ ਲੇਤ ਭਯੋ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਸ੍ਯਾਮ ਭਨੈ ਦੋਊ ਨੈਨ ਤਚਾਏ ॥
kop ute dhan let bhayo nrip sayaam bhanai doaoo nain tachaae |

On that side the king in anger, with reddened eyes, took up his bow in his hand

ਜੋ ਸਰ ਆਵਤ ਭਯੋ ਹਰਿ ਊਪਰਿ ਸੋ ਛਿਨ ਮੈ ਸਬ ਕਾਟਿ ਗਿਰਾਏ ॥
jo sar aavat bhayo har aoopar so chhin mai sab kaatt giraae |

The arrows (of King Jarasandha) that came at Sri Krishna cut them all to pieces and threw them away.

ਸ੍ਰੀ ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਸਰ ਭੂਪਤਿ ਕੇ ਤਨ ਕਉ ਤਨਕੋ ਨਹਿ ਭੇਟਨ ਪਾਏ ॥੧੮੪੫॥
sree har ke sar bhoopat ke tan kau tanako neh bhettan paae |1845|

The arrows which were coming towards Krishna were intercepted by him and the arrows of Krishna are not even touching the kng.1845.

ਇਤ ਸੋ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਜੂਝਿ ਕਰੈ ਹਰਿ ਸਿਉ ਉਤ ਤੇ ਮੁਸਲੀ ਇਕ ਬੈਨ ਸੁਨਾਯੋ ॥
eit so nrip joojh karai har siau ut te musalee ik bain sunaayo |

Here the king is fighting with Sri Krishna and from there Balarama utters a word (to him),

ਮਾਰਿ ਬਿਦਾਰਿ ਦਏ ਤੁਮਰੇ ਭਟ ਤੈ ਮਨ ਮੈ ਨਹੀ ਨੈਕੁ ਲਜਾਯੋ ॥
maar bidaar de tumare bhatt tai man mai nahee naik lajaayo |

On this side the king is fighting with Krishna and on that side Balram said to the king, “We have killed your warriors, but still you do not feel ashamed

ਰੇ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਕਾਹੇ ਕਉ ਜੂਝ ਮਰੈ ਫਿਰਿ ਜਾਹੋ ਘਰੈ ਲਰਿ ਕਾ ਫਲੁ ਪਾਯੋ ॥
re nrip kaahe kau joojh marai fir jaaho gharai lar kaa fal paayo |

“O king! go back to your home, what will you gain by fighting? O king! you are like deer and
