ਗਹਿਰੀ ਨਦੀ ਬਿਖੈ ਲੈ ਡਾਰਿਸਿ ॥
gahiree nadee bikhai lai ddaaris |and threw it into the deep river.
ਜਿਯ ਅਪਨੇ ਕਾ ਲੋਭ ਨ ਕਰਾ ॥
jiy apane kaa lobh na karaa |He did not care for his life.
ਇਹ ਛਲ ਰਾਹੁ ਅਸ੍ਵ ਕਹ ਹਰਾ ॥੧੩॥
eih chhal raahu asv kah haraa |13|Rahu stole the horse with this trick. 13.
ਜਬ ਬਾਜੀ ਹਜਰਤਿ ਕੋ ਗਯੋ ॥
jab baajee hajarat ko gayo |When the king's horse was stolen,
ਸਭਹਿਨ ਕੋ ਬਿਸਮੈ ਜਿਯ ਭਯੋ ॥
sabhahin ko bisamai jiy bhayo |(So) there was great surprise in everyone's mind.
ਜਹਾ ਨ ਸਕਤ ਪ੍ਰਵੇਸ ਪਵਨ ਕਰਿ ॥
jahaa na sakat praves pavan kar |Where even the wind could not penetrate,
ਤਹ ਤੇ ਲਯੋ ਤੁਰੰਗਮ ਕਿਨ ਹਰਿ ॥੧੪॥
tah te layo turangam kin har |14|Who took the horse from there? 14.
ਪ੍ਰਾਤ ਬਚਨ ਹਜਰਤਿ ਇਮ ਕਿਯੋ ॥
praat bachan hajarat im kiyo |In the morning, the king spoke like this
ਅਭੈ ਦਾਨ ਚੋਰਹਿ ਮੈ ਦਿਯੋ ॥
abhai daan choreh mai diyo |That I spared the life of the thief.
ਜੋ ਵਹ ਮੋ ਕਹ ਬਦਨ ਦਿਖਾਵੈ ॥
jo vah mo kah badan dikhaavai |If he shows me his face then (from me)
ਬੀਸ ਸਹਸ੍ਰ ਅਸਰਫੀ ਪਾਵੈ ॥੧੫॥
bees sahasr asarafee paavai |15|He should receive (the reward of) twenty thousand ashrafis. 15.
ਅਭੈ ਦਾਨ ਤਾ ਕੌ ਮੈ ਦ੍ਰਯਾਯੋ ॥
abhai daan taa kau mai drayaayo |The king recited the Quran and took an oath
ਖਾਈ ਸਪਤ ਕੁਰਾਨ ਉਚਾਯੋ ॥
khaaee sapat kuraan uchaayo |And announced that his life would be spared.
ਤਬ ਤ੍ਰਿਯ ਭੇਸ ਪੁਰਖ ਕੋ ਧਰਾ ॥
tab triy bhes purakh ko dharaa |Then (that) woman assumed the form of a man
ਸੇਰ ਸਾਹ ਕਹ ਸਿਜਦਾ ਕਰਾ ॥੧੬॥
ser saah kah sijadaa karaa |16|And bowed down to Shershah. 16.
ਦੋਹਰਾ ॥
doharaa |dual:
ਪੁਰਖ ਭੇਖ ਕਹ ਪਹਿਰ ਤ੍ਰਿਯ ਭੂਖਨ ਸਜੇ ਸੁਰੰਗ ॥
purakh bhekh kah pahir triy bhookhan saje surang |(That) woman disguised as a man and adorned with beautiful ornaments
ਸੇਰ ਸਾਹ ਸੌ ਇਮਿ ਕਹਾ ਮੈ ਤਵ ਹਰਾ ਤੁਰੰਗ ॥੧੭॥
ser saah sau im kahaa mai tav haraa turang |17|Said to Shershah like this that I have stolen your horse. 17.
ਚੌਪਈ ॥
chauapee |twenty four:
ਜਬ ਹਜਰਤਿ ਤਾ ਕੌ ਲਖਿ ਲਯੋ ॥
jab hajarat taa kau lakh layo |When the king saw him,
ਹਰਖਤ ਭਯੋ ਕੋਪ ਮਿਟਿ ਗਯੋ ॥
harakhat bhayo kop mitt gayo |(So he) became happy and anger disappeared.
ਨਿਰਖਿ ਪ੍ਰਭਾ ਉਪਮਾ ਬਹੁ ਕੀਨੀ ॥
nirakh prabhaa upamaa bahu keenee |Seeing her beauty praised a lot
ਬੀਸ ਸਹਸ੍ਰ ਅਸਰਫੀ ਦੀਨੀ ॥੧੮॥
bees sahasr asarafee deenee |18|And gave twenty thousand Ashrafis (as a reward). 18.
ਦੋਹਰਾ ॥
doharaa |dual:
ਹਸਿ ਹਜਰਤਿ ਐਸੇ ਕਹਾ ਸੁਨੁ ਤਸਕਰ ਸੁੰਦ੍ਰੰਗ ॥
has hajarat aaise kahaa sun tasakar sundrang |The king laughed and said, O thief with beautiful limbs! listen
ਸੋ ਬਿਧਿ ਕਹੋ ਬਨਾਇ ਮੁਹਿ ਕਿਹ ਬਿਧਿ ਹਰਾ ਤੁਰੰਗ ॥੧੯॥
so bidh kaho banaae muhi kih bidh haraa turang |19|Tell me the method by which you stole the horse. 19.
ਚੌਪਈ ॥
chauapee |twenty four:
ਜਬ ਅਬਲਾ ਆਇਸੁ ਇਮਿ ਪਾਵਾ ॥
jab abalaa aaeis im paavaa |When the woman received this permission
ਮੁਹਰ ਰਾਖਿ ਮੇਖਨ ਲੈ ਆਵਾ ॥
muhar raakh mekhan lai aavaa |(So she) brought it to the fort after keeping the seals.
ਸਰਿਤਾ ਮੋ ਤ੍ਰਿਣ ਗੂਲ ਬਹਾਇਸਿ ॥
saritaa mo trin gool bahaaeis |(Then) in the river the pools of Kakh-Kan were blocked
ਰਛਪਾਲ ਤਾ ਪਰ ਡਹਕਾਇਸਿ ॥੨੦॥
rachhapaal taa par ddahakaaeis |20|And the guards were confused with them. 20.
ਦੋਹਰਾ ॥
doharaa |dual:
ਬਹੁਰਿ ਨਦੀ ਭੀਤਰ ਪਰੀ ਜਾਤ ਭਈ ਤਰਿ ਪਾਰਿ ॥
bahur nadee bheetar paree jaat bhee tar paar |Then she fell into the river and swam across
ਸਾਹਿ ਝਰੋਖਾ ਕੇ ਤਰੇ ਲਾਗਤ ਭਈ ਸੁਧਾਰਿ ॥੨੧॥
saeh jharokhaa ke tare laagat bhee sudhaar |21|And the king's window went down. 21.
ਚੌਪਈ ॥
chauapee |twenty four:
ਜਬ ਘਰਿਯਾਰੀ ਘਰੀ ਬਜਾਵੈ ॥
jab ghariyaaree gharee bajaavai |When the clock strikes,
ਤਬ ਵਹ ਮੇਖਿਕ ਤਹਾ ਲਗਾਵੈ ॥
tab vah mekhik tahaa lagaavai |So she would build a fort there.
ਬੀਤਾ ਦਿਵਸ ਰਜਨਿ ਬਡਿ ਗਈ ॥
beetaa divas rajan badd gee |The day passed and the night grew,
ਤਬ ਤ੍ਰਿਯ ਤਹਾ ਪਹੂਚਤ ਭਈ ॥੨੨॥
tab triy tahaa pahoochat bhee |22|Then the woman reached there. 22.
ਅੜਿਲ ॥
arril |adamant:
ਤੈਸਹਿ ਛੋਰਿ ਤੁਰੰਗ ਝਰੋਖਾ ਬੀਚ ਕਰਿ ॥
taiseh chhor turang jharokhaa beech kar |In the same way, the horse was untied and taken out of the window
ਜਲ ਮੋ ਪਰੀ ਕੁਦਾਇ ਜਾਤ ਭੀ ਪਾਰ ਤਰਿ ॥
jal mo paree kudaae jaat bhee paar tar |And came into the water and swam across.
ਸਭ ਲੋਕਨ ਕੌ ਕੌਤਕ ਅਧਿਕ ਦਿਖਾਇ ਕੈ ॥
sabh lokan kau kauatak adhik dikhaae kai |By showing all the people a very (good) Kautka
ਹੋ ਸੇਰ ਸਾਹ ਸੌ ਬਚਨ ਕਹੇ ਮੁਸਕਾਇ ਕੈ ॥੨੩॥
ho ser saah sau bachan kahe musakaae kai |23|And laughed and said to Sher Shah. 23.
ਇਹੀ ਭਾਤਿ ਸੋ ਪ੍ਰਥਮ ਬਾਜ ਮੁਰਿ ਕਰ ਪਰਿਯੋ ॥
eihee bhaat so pratham baaj mur kar pariyo |In the same way, the first horse was put in my hands
ਦੁਤਿਯ ਅਸ੍ਵ ਤਵ ਨਿਰਖਿਤ ਇਹ ਛਲ ਸੌ ਹਰਿਯੋ ॥
dutiy asv tav nirakhit ih chhal sau hariyo |And the other horse has been stolen by this trick in your sight.
ਸੇਰ ਸਾਹਿ ਤਬ ਕਹਿਯੋ ਕਹਾ ਬੁਧਿ ਕੋ ਭਯੋ ॥
ser saeh tab kahiyo kahaa budh ko bhayo |Sher Shah said what happened to (my) intelligence
ਹੋ ਰਾਹਾ ਥੋ ਜਹਾ ਤਹੀ ਸੁਰਾਹਾ ਹੂੰ ਗਯੋ ॥੨੪॥
ho raahaa tho jahaa tahee suraahaa hoon gayo |24|That where Rahu was, Surahu also went there. 24.
