ਨਿਤਪ੍ਰਤਿ ਅਪਨੋ ਮੂੰਡ ਮੁੰਡਾਵੈ ॥੧੨॥
nitaprat apano moondd munddaavai |12|And every day he was cheated. 12.

ਸੁਨੁ ਭੂਪਤਿ ਇਕ ਕਥਾ ਨਵੀਨੀ ॥
sun bhoopat ik kathaa naveenee |O Rajan! Listen to a new story.
ਕਿਨਹੂੰ ਲਖੀ ਨ ਆਗੇ ਚੀਨੀ ॥
kinahoon lakhee na aage cheenee |Which no one has seen (before)? And no further is known.
ਸੁੰਦ੍ਰਾਵਤੀ ਨਗਰ ਇਕ ਸੋਹੈ ॥
sundraavatee nagar ik sohai |There was a town called Sundravati.
ਸੁੰਦਰ ਸਿੰਘ ਰਾਜਾ ਤਹ ਕੋ ਹੈ ॥੧॥
sundar singh raajaa tah ko hai |1|The king there was Sunder Singh. 1.
ਸੁੰਦਰ ਦੇ ਰਾਜਾ ਕੀ ਨਾਰੀ ॥
sundar de raajaa kee naaree |(Dei) was the wife of the king of Sundar.
ਆਪੁ ਜਨਕੁ ਜਗਦੀਸ ਸਵਾਰੀ ॥
aap janak jagadees savaaree |As if Jagdish himself had made him.
ਤਾ ਕੀ ਜਾਤ ਨ ਪ੍ਰਭਾ ਬਖਾਨੀ ॥
taa kee jaat na prabhaa bakhaanee |His brilliance cannot be described.
ਐਸੀ ਹੁਤੀ ਰਾਇ ਕੀ ਰਾਨੀ ॥੨॥
aaisee hutee raae kee raanee |2|Such was the king's queen. 2.
ਤਹਿਕ ਸਾਹ ਕੋ ਪੂਤ ਅਪਾਰਾ ॥
tahik saah ko poot apaaraa |There it was a son of immense (beauty) of the Shah,
ਕਨਕ ਅਵਟਿ ਸਾਚੇ ਜਨੁ ਢਾਰਾ ॥
kanak avatt saache jan dtaaraa |As if the gold had been refined and molded into a pile.
ਨਿਰਖਿ ਨਾਕ ਜਿਹ ਸੂਆ ਰਿਸਾਨੋ ॥
nirakh naak jih sooaa risaano |Parrot used to get angry seeing his nose.
ਕੰਜ ਜਾਨਿ ਦ੍ਰਿਗ ਭਵਰ ਭੁਲਾਨੋ ॥੩॥
kanj jaan drig bhavar bhulaano |3|Thinking the eyes as lotus (flowers), the browns were forgotten. 3.
ਕਟਿ ਕੇਹਰਿ ਲਖਿ ਅਧਿਕ ਰਿਸਾਵਤ ॥
katt kehar lakh adhik risaavat |The lion used to get angry seeing the waist
ਤਾ ਤੇ ਫਿਰਤ ਮ੍ਰਿਗਨ ਕਹ ਘਾਵਤ ॥
taa te firat mrigan kah ghaavat |And for this reason he used to kill wild animals ('Mrigan').
ਸੁਨਿ ਬਾਨੀ ਕੋਕਿਲ ਕੁਕਰਈ ॥
sun baanee kokil kukaree |The cuckoo used to crow after hearing the words
ਕ੍ਰੋਧ ਜਰਤ ਕਾਰੀ ਹ੍ਵੈ ਗਈ ॥੪॥
krodh jarat kaaree hvai gee |4|And it was burnt with anger and turned black. 4.
ਨੈਨ ਨਿਰਖਿ ਕਰਿ ਜਲਜ ਲਜਾਨਾ ॥
nain nirakh kar jalaj lajaanaa |Seeing (his) nainas used to make lotuses,
ਤਾ ਤੇ ਜਲ ਮਹਿ ਕਿਯਾ ਪਯਾਨਾ ॥
taa te jal meh kiyaa payaanaa |That is why (they) entered the water.
ਅਲਕ ਹੇਰਿ ਨਾਗਿਨਿ ਰਿਸਿ ਭਰੀ ॥
alak her naagin ris bharee |Seeing (his) whirlwinds filled with rage
ਚਿਤ ਮਹਿ ਲਜਤ ਪਤਾਰਹਿ ਬਰੀ ॥੫॥
chit meh lajat pataareh baree |5|And being ashamed in Chit, they have gone to the underworld. 5.
ਸੋ ਆਯੋ ਰਾਜਾ ਕੇ ਪਾਸਾ ॥
so aayo raajaa ke paasaa |He came to the king (for prince-son business).
ਸੌਦਾ ਕੀ ਜਿਯ ਮੈ ਧਰਿ ਆਸਾ ॥
sauadaa kee jiy mai dhar aasaa |(He) had in mind the hope of making a deal.
ਸੁੰਦਰਿ ਦੇ ਨਿਰਖਤ ਤਿਹ ਭਈ ॥
sundar de nirakhat tih bhee |Sundar Dei saw him
ਸੁਧਿ ਬੁਧਿ ਤਜਿ ਬੌਰੀ ਹ੍ਵੈ ਗਈ ॥੬॥
sudh budh taj bauaree hvai gee |6|So Sudha left the Buddha and became crazy. 6.
ਪਠੈ ਸਹਚਰੀ ਤਾਹਿ ਬੁਲਾਵਾ ॥
patthai sahacharee taeh bulaavaa |Sent to the friend and called her
ਕਾਮ ਭੋਗ ਕਿਯ ਜਸ ਮਨ ਭਾਵਾ ॥
kaam bhog kiy jas man bhaavaa |And reconciled with him in a pleasing manner.
ਤਹ ਇਕ ਹੁਤੀ ਨ੍ਰਿਪਤਿ ਕੀ ਚੇਰੀ ॥
tah ik hutee nripat kee cheree |There was a king's maidservant.
ਹੇਰਿ ਗਈ ਜਸ ਹੇਰਿ ਅਹੇਰੀ ॥੭॥
her gee jas her aheree |7|She saw (all this) as a hunter sees (the prey).7.
ਪਾਵ ਦਾਬਿ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਜਾਇ ਜਗਾਯੋ ॥
paav daab nrip jaae jagaayo |(He) woke up the king by pressing his foot
ਧਾਮ ਤੋਰ ਤਸਕਰਿ ਇਕ ਆਯੋ ॥
dhaam tor tasakar ik aayo |(And said that) a thief has come to your house.
ਰਾਨੀ ਕੇ ਸੰਗ ਕਰਤ ਬਿਲਾਸਾ ॥
raanee ke sang karat bilaasaa |(He) is luxuriating with the queen.
ਚਲਿ ਦੇਖਹੁ ਤਿਹ ਭੂਪ ਤਮਾਸਾ ॥੮॥
chal dekhahu tih bhoop tamaasaa |8|O Rajan! Go and see (the whole spectacle with your own eyes) 8.
ਸੁਨਤ ਬਚਨ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਅਧਿਕ ਰਿਸਾਯੋ ॥
sunat bachan nrip adhik risaayo |The king became very angry after hearing the words
ਖੜਗ ਹਾਥ ਲੈ ਤਹਾ ਸਿਧਾਯੋ ॥
kharrag haath lai tahaa sidhaayo |And reached there with sword in hand.
ਜਬ ਅਬਲਾ ਪਤਿ ਕੀ ਸੁਧਿ ਪਾਈ ॥
jab abalaa pat kee sudh paaee |When Rani found out about her husband's arrival
ਅਧਿਕ ਧੂੰਮ ਤਹ ਦਿਯਾ ਜਗਾਈ ॥੯॥
adhik dhoonm tah diyaa jagaaee |9|(Then) he blew a lot of smoke. 9.
ਸਭ ਕੇ ਨੈਨ ਧੂਮ੍ਰ ਸੌ ਭਰੇ ॥
sabh ke nain dhoomr sau bhare |Everyone's eyes filled with smoke
ਅਸੁਆ ਟੂਟਿ ਬਦਨ ਪਰ ਪਰੇ ॥
asuaa ttoott badan par pare |And tears started falling on the face.
ਜਬ ਰਾਨੀ ਇਹ ਘਾਤ ਪਛਾਨੀ ॥
jab raanee ih ghaat pachhaanee |When the queen saw this opportunity,
ਮਿਤ੍ਰ ਲੰਘਾਇ ਹਿਯੇ ਹਰਖਾਨੀ ॥੧੦॥
mitr langhaae hiye harakhaanee |10|(Then) by passing (that is to say) Mitra, she became happy in her mind. 10.
ਆਗੇ ਸੌ ਕਰਿ ਕਾਢਾ ਜਾਰਾ ॥
aage sau kar kaadtaa jaaraa |He removed the friend from the front (of all).
ਧੂਮ੍ਰ ਭਰੇ ਦ੍ਰਿਗ ਨ੍ਰਿਪਨ ਨਿਹਾਰਾ ॥
dhoomr bhare drig nripan nihaaraa |And with smoky eyes the king looked on.
ਪੌਛ ਨੇਤ੍ਰ ਜਬ ਹੀ ਗਯੋ ਤਹਾ ॥
pauachh netr jab hee gayo tahaa |When the king went there after wiping his eyes,
ਕੋਊ ਨ ਪੁਰਖ ਨਿਹਾਰਾ ਉਹਾ ॥੧੧॥
koaoo na purakh nihaaraa uhaa |11|So no man was seen there. 11.
ਉਲਟਿ ਤਿਸੀ ਚੇਰੀ ਕਹ ਘਾਯੋ ॥
aulatt tisee cheree kah ghaayo |(The king got angry) On the contrary, he killed that maid
ਇਹ ਰਾਨੀ ਕਹ ਦੋਸ ਲਗਾਯੋ ॥
eih raanee kah dos lagaayo |(And said) He has falsely accused the queen.
ਮੂਰਖ ਭੂਪ ਨ ਭੇਦ ਬਿਚਾਰਾ ॥
moorakh bhoop na bhed bichaaraa |The foolish king did not understand the secret
