ਝਖ ਕੇਤੁਕ ਬਾਨਨ ਪੀੜਤ ਭੀ ਮਨ ਜਾਇ ਰਹਿਯੋ ਮਨ ਮੋਹਨ ਮੈ ॥
jhakh ketuk baanan peerrat bhee man jaae rahiyo man mohan mai |Many have been afflicted by the arrows of Kama Dev ('Jhak Ketu') and their mind has gone to Manmohan.
ਮਨੋ ਦੀਪਕ ਭੇਦ ਸੁਨੋ ਸੁਰ ਨਾਦ ਮ੍ਰਿਗੀ ਗਨ ਜਾਨੁ ਬਿਧੀ ਮਨ ਮੈ ॥੪੮॥
mano deepak bhed suno sur naad mrigee gan jaan bidhee man mai |48|(It appears like this) as if the secret of Deepak (pervanas have been found) or as if many deer have been pierced in the mind by hearing the sound of the herd. 48.
ਦੋਹਰਾ ॥
doharaa |dual:
ਅਨਿਕ ਜਤਨ ਕਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਤ੍ਰਿਯਾ ਹਾਰਤ ਭਈ ਅਨੇਕ ॥
anik jatan kar kar triyaa haarat bhee anek |Many women have failed after making various efforts.
ਬਨ ਹੀ ਕੌ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਜਾਤ ਭਯੋ ਮਾਨਿਯੋ ਬਚਨ ਨ ਏਕ ॥੪੯॥
ban hee kau nrip jaat bhayo maaniyo bachan na ek |49|But the king went away and did not listen to anyone. 49.
ਜਬ ਰਾਜਾ ਬਨ ਮੈ ਗਏ ਗੋਰਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਬੁਲਾਇ ॥
jab raajaa ban mai ge gorakh guroo bulaae |When the king went to Ban (then) Guru Gorakh Nath called him.
ਬਹੁਰਿ ਭਾਤਿ ਸਿਛ੍ਯਾ ਦਈ ਤਾਹਿ ਸਿਖ੍ਯ ਠਹਰਾਇ ॥੫੦॥
bahur bhaat sichhayaa dee taeh sikhay tthaharaae |50|He made him his disciple by giving him various kinds of education. 50.
ਭਰਥਰੀ ਬਾਚ ॥
bharatharee baach |Bharthari said:
ਕਵਨ ਮਰੈ ਮਾਰੈ ਕਵਨ ਕਹਤ ਸੁਨਤ ਕਹ ਕੋਇ ॥
kavan marai maarai kavan kahat sunat kah koe |(O Guru Gorakh Nath! Say this) Who dies, who kills, who speaks, who listens,
ਕੋ ਰੋਵੈ ਕਵਨੈ ਹਸੈ ਕਵਨ ਜਰਾ ਜਿਤ ਹੋਇ ॥੫੧॥
ko rovai kavanai hasai kavan jaraa jit hoe |51|Who cries, who laughs, who is going to overcome old age? 51
ਚੌਪਈ ॥
chauapee |twenty four:
ਹਸਿ ਗੋਰਖ ਇਮਿ ਬਚਨ ਉਚਾਰੇ ॥
has gorakh im bachan uchaare |Gorakh laughed and said thus,
ਸੁਨਹੁ ਭਰਥ ਹਰਿ ਰਾਜ ਹਮਾਰੇ ॥
sunahu bharath har raaj hamaare |my brother Hari Raja! listen
ਸਤਿ ਝੂਠ ਮੂਓ ਹੰਕਾਰਾ ॥
sat jhootth mooo hankaaraa |Truth, lies and pride die,
ਕਬਹੂ ਮਰਤ ਨ ਬੋਲਨਹਾਰਾ ॥੫੨॥
kabahoo marat na bolanahaaraa |52|But the speaking soul never dies. 52.
ਦੋਹਰਾ ॥
doharaa |dual:
ਕਾਲ ਮਰੈ ਕਾਯਾ ਮਰੈ ਕਾਲੈ ਕਰਤ ਉਚਾਰ ॥
kaal marai kaayaa marai kaalai karat uchaar |Time dies, body dies and only time utters (words).
ਜੀਭੈ ਗੁਨ ਬਖ੍ਯਾਨ ਹੀ ਸ੍ਰਵਨਨ ਸੁਨਤ ਸੁਧਾਰ ॥੫੩॥
jeebhai gun bakhayaan hee sravanan sunat sudhaar |53|The quality of the tongue is to speak and the function of the ears is to listen completely. 53.
ਚੌਪਈ ॥

ਕਾਲ ਨੈਨ ਹ੍ਵੈ ਸਭਨ ਨਿਹਰਈ ॥
kaal nain hvai sabhan niharee |Kaal becomes Naina and sees all.
ਕਾਲ ਬਕਤ੍ਰ ਹ੍ਵੈ ਬਾਕ ਉਚਰਈ ॥
kaal bakatr hvai baak ucharee |Kaal utters Bani (speech) by becoming Mukh.
ਕਾਲ ਮਰਤ ਕਾਲ ਹੀ ਮਾਰੈ ॥
kaal marat kaal hee maarai |Call dies and call only kills.
ਭੂਲਾ ਲੋਗ ਭਰਮ ਬੀਚਾਰੈ ॥੫੪॥
bhoolaa log bharam beechaarai |54|Those who are oblivious (of this reality) lie in delusion. 54.
ਦੋਹਰਾ ॥
doharaa |dual:
ਕਾਲ ਹਸਤ ਕਾਲੈ ਰੋਵਤ ਕਰਤ ਜਰਾ ਜਿਤ ਹੋਇ ॥
kaal hasat kaalai rovat karat jaraa jit hoe |Only time laughs, only time cries, only time wins over old age.
ਕਾਲ ਪਾਇ ਉਪਜਤ ਸਭੈ ਕਾਲ ਪਾਇ ਬਧ ਹੋਇ ॥੫੫॥
kaal paae upajat sabhai kaal paae badh hoe |55|All are born only by famine and die only by famine. 55.
ਚੌਪਈ ॥

ਕਾਲੈ ਮਰਤ ਕਾਲ ਹੀ ਮਾਰੈ ॥
kaalai marat kaal hee maarai |Call only dies, call only kills.
ਭ੍ਰਮਿ ਭ੍ਰਮਿ ਪਿੰਡ ਅਵਾਰਾ ਪਾਰੈ ॥
bhram bhram pindd avaaraa paarai |(Time itself) assumes a body ('village') by illusion in movement.
ਕਾਮ ਕ੍ਰੋਧ ਮੂਓ ਹੰਕਾਰਾ ॥
kaam krodh mooo hankaaraa |Lust, anger and pride die,
ਏਕ ਨ ਮਰਿਯੋ ਸੁ ਬੋਲਣਹਾਰਾ ॥੫੬॥
ek na mariyo su bolanahaaraa |56|(But only) the speaker (doer) does not die. 56.
ਆਸਾ ਕਰਤ ਸਕਲ ਜਗ ਮਰਈ ॥
aasaa karat sakal jag maree |By hoping, the whole world dies.
ਕੌਨ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਆਸਾ ਪਰਹਰਈ ॥
kauan purakh aasaa paraharee |Who is the man who abandons hope?
ਜੋ ਨਰ ਕੋਊ ਆਸ ਕੌ ਤ੍ਯਾਗੈ ॥
jo nar koaoo aas kau tayaagai |Whoever abandons hope
ਸੋ ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਪਾਇਨ ਸੌ ਲਾਗੈ ॥੫੭॥
so har ke paaein sau laagai |57|He takes place at the feet of God. 57.
ਦੋਹਰਾ ॥
doharaa |dual:
ਆਸਾ ਕੀ ਆਸਾ ਪੁਰਖ ਜੋ ਕੋਊ ਤਜਤ ਬਨਾਇ ॥
aasaa kee aasaa purakh jo koaoo tajat banaae |A person who abandons the hope of hope,
ਪਾਪ ਪੁੰਨ੍ਯ ਸਰ ਤਰਿ ਤੁਰਤ ਪਰਮ ਪੁਰੀ ਕਹ ਜਾਇ ॥੫੮॥
paap punay sar tar turat param puree kah jaae |58|He quickly crosses the reservoir (world) of sins and merits and goes to Param Puri. 58.
ਜ੍ਯੋ ਸਮੁੰਦਹਿ ਗੰਗਾ ਮਿਲਤ ਸਹੰਸ ਧਾਰ ਕੈ ਸਾਜ ॥
jayo samundeh gangaa milat sahans dhaar kai saaj |As the Ganga merges into the sea by making thousands of streams,
ਤ੍ਯੋਂ ਗੋਰਖ ਰਿਖਿਰਾਜ ਸਿਯੋਂ ਆਜੁ ਮਿਲ੍ਯੋ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਰਾਜ ॥੫੯॥
tayon gorakh rikhiraaj siyon aaj milayo nrip raaj |59|In the same way, Shiromani Raja (Bharthari) has got together with Rikhi Raj Gorakh.59.
ਚੌਪਈ ॥
chauapee |twenty four:
ਯਾਤੇ ਮੈ ਬਿਸਥਾਰ ਨ ਕਰੌ ॥
yaate mai bisathaar na karau |So I will not go into more detail
ਗ੍ਰੰਥ ਬਢਨ ਤੇ ਅਤਿ ਚਿਤ ਡਰੌ ॥
granth badtan te at chit ddarau |Because I am afraid in my mind of going over the scriptures.
ਤਾ ਤੇ ਕਥਾ ਨ ਅਧਿਕ ਬਢਾਈ ॥
taa te kathaa na adhik badtaaee |So the story is not extended much.
ਭੂਲ ਪਰੀ ਤਹ ਲੇਹੁ ਬਨਾਈ ॥੬੦॥
bhool paree tah lehu banaaee |60|(If) it has been forgotten, then take correction. 60.
ਗੋਰਖ ਸੋ ਗੋਸਟਿ ਜਬ ਭਈ ॥
gorakh so gosatt jab bhee |When (King Bharthari Hari) visited Gorakh
ਰਾਜਾ ਕੀ ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਸਭ ਗਈ ॥
raajaa kee duramat sabh gee |So the king's foolishness ended.
ਸੀਖਤ ਗ੍ਯਾਨ ਭਲੀ ਬਿਧਿ ਭਯੋ ॥
seekhat gayaan bhalee bidh bhayo |(He) learned knowledge well
