ਦੂਖ ਭੂਖ ਕਬਹੂੰ ਨ ਸੰਤਾਏ ॥
dookh bhookh kabahoon na santaae |

(They are) never afflicted by sorrow and hunger

ਜਾਲ ਕਾਲ ਕੇ ਬੀਚ ਨ ਆਏ ॥੬॥
jaal kaal ke beech na aae |6|

Their sorrows, their wants were vanished and even their transmigration came to and end.6.

ਨਾਨਕ ਅੰਗਦ ਕੋ ਬਪੁ ਧਰਾ ॥
naanak angad ko bap dharaa |

(Guru) Nanak assumed (second) body as (Guru) Angad

ਧਰਮ ਪ੍ਰਚੁਰਿ ਇਹ ਜਗ ਮੋ ਕਰਾ ॥
dharam prachur ih jag mo karaa |

Nanak transformed himself to Angad and spread Dharma in the world.

ਅਮਰ ਦਾਸ ਪੁਨਿ ਨਾਮ ਕਹਾਯੋ ॥
amar daas pun naam kahaayo |

Then (in the third form that Guru) called Amardas,

ਜਨੁ ਦੀਪਕ ਤੇ ਦੀਪ ਜਗਾਯੋ ॥੭॥
jan deepak te deep jagaayo |7|

He was called Amar Das in the next transformation, a lamp was lit from the lamp.7.

ਜਬ ਬਰਦਾਨਿ ਸਮੈ ਵਹੁ ਆਵਾ ॥
jab baradaan samai vahu aavaa |

When that time of blessing came

ਰਾਮਦਾਸ ਤਬ ਗੁਰੂ ਕਹਾਵਾ ॥
raamadaas tab guroo kahaavaa |

When the opportune time came for the boon, then the Guru was called Ram Das.

ਤਿਹ ਬਰਦਾਨਿ ਪੁਰਾਤਨਿ ਦੀਆ ॥
tih baradaan puraatan deea |

By giving them the ancient boon

ਅਮਰਦਾਸਿ ਸੁਰਪੁਰਿ ਮਗ ਲੀਆ ॥੮॥
amaradaas surapur mag leea |8|

The old boon was bestowed upon him, when Amar Das departed for the heavens.8.

ਸ੍ਰੀ ਨਾਨਕ ਅੰਗਦਿ ਕਰਿ ਮਾਨਾ ॥
sree naanak angad kar maanaa |

Angad to Guru Nanak Dev

ਅਮਰ ਦਾਸ ਅੰਗਦ ਪਹਿਚਾਨਾ ॥
amar daas angad pahichaanaa |

Sri Nanak was recognized in Angad, and Angad in Amar Das.

ਅਮਰ ਦਾਸ ਰਾਮਦਾਸ ਕਹਾਯੋ ॥
amar daas raamadaas kahaayo |

And (Guru) Amardas came to be known as (Guru) Ramdas.

ਸਾਧਨ ਲਖਾ ਮੂੜ ਨਹਿ ਪਾਯੋ ॥੯॥
saadhan lakhaa moorr neh paayo |9|

Amar Das was called Ram Das, only the saints know it and the fools did not.9.

ਭਿੰਨ ਭਿੰਨ ਸਭਹੂੰ ਕਰਿ ਜਾਨਾ ॥
bhin bhin sabhahoon kar jaanaa |

All people have known (them) in different ways,

ਏਕ ਰੂਪ ਕਿਨਹੂੰ ਪਹਿਚਾਨਾ ॥
ek roop kinahoon pahichaanaa |

The people on the whole considered them as separate ones, but there were few who recognized them as one and the same.

ਜਿਨ ਜਾਨਾ ਤਿਨ ਹੀ ਸਿਧਿ ਪਾਈ ॥
jin jaanaa tin hee sidh paaee |

Those who have known (them in one form) have attained liberation (directly).

ਬਿਨੁ ਸਮਝੇ ਸਿਧਿ ਹਾਥਿ ਨ ਆਈ ॥੧੦॥
bin samajhe sidh haath na aaee |10|

Those who recognized them as One, they were successful on the spiritual plane. Without recognition there was no success.10.

ਰਾਮਦਾਸ ਹਰਿ ਸੋ ਮਿਲਿ ਗਏ ॥
raamadaas har so mil ge |

(Guru) Ramdas merged with Hari

ਗੁਰਤਾ ਦੇਤ ਅਰਜੁਨਹਿ ਭਏ ॥
gurataa det arajuneh bhe |

When Ramdas merged in the Lord, the Guruship was bestowed upon Arjan.

ਜਬ ਅਰਜੁਨ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਲੋਕਿ ਸਿਧਾਏ ॥
jab arajun prabh lok sidhaae |

When (Guru) Arjan went to Prabhu-loka,

ਹਰਿਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਤਿਹ ਠਾ ਠਹਰਾਏ ॥੧੧॥
harigobind tih tthaa tthaharaae |11|

When Arjan left for the abode of the Lord, Hargobind was seated on this throne.11.

ਹਰਿਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਲੋਕਿ ਸਿਧਾਰੇ ॥
harigobind prabh lok sidhaare |

When (Guru) Hargobind went to God,

ਹਰੀ ਰਾਇ ਤਿਹ ਠਾ ਬੈਠਾਰੇ ॥
haree raae tih tthaa baitthaare |

When Hargobind left for the abode of the Lord, Har rai was seated in his place.

ਹਰੀ ਕ੍ਰਿਸਨਿ ਤਿਨ ਕੇ ਸੁਤ ਵਏ ॥
haree krisan tin ke sut ve |

His son (Guru) became Hari Krishna.

ਤਿਨ ਤੇ ਤੇਗ ਬਹਾਦੁਰ ਭਏ ॥੧੨॥
tin te teg bahaadur bhe |12|

Har Krishan (the next Guru) was his son, after him, Tegh Bahadur became the Guru.12.

ਤਿਲਕ ਜੰਞੂ ਰਾਖਾ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਤਾ ਕਾ ॥
tilak janyoo raakhaa prabh taa kaa |

(Guru) Teg Bahadur protected their (Brahmins) Tilak and Janju.

ਕੀਨੋ ਬਡੋ ਕਲੂ ਮਹਿ ਸਾਕਾ ॥
keeno baddo kaloo meh saakaa |

He protected the forehead mark and sacred thread (of the Hindus) which marked a great event in the Iron age.

ਸਾਧਨ ਹੇਤਿ ਇਤੀ ਜਿਨਿ ਕਰੀ ॥
saadhan het itee jin karee |

For the sadhu-purusha who have done the limit of (sacrifice).

ਸੀਸੁ ਦੀਆ ਪਰੁ ਸੀ ਨ ਉਚਰੀ ॥੧੩॥
sees deea par see na ucharee |13|

For the sake of saints, he laid down his head without even a sign.13.

ਧਰਮ ਹੇਤ ਸਾਕਾ ਜਿਨਿ ਕੀਆ ॥
dharam het saakaa jin keea |

Those who did such apocalypse for the sake of religion

ਸੀਸੁ ਦੀਆ ਪਰੁ ਸਿਰਰੁ ਨ ਦੀਆ ॥
sees deea par sirar na deea |

For the sake of Dharma, he sacrificed himself. He laid down his head but not his creed.

ਨਾਟਕ ਚੇਟਕ ਕੀਏ ਕੁਕਾਜਾ ॥
naattak chettak kee kukaajaa |

(to do Dharma-karma) who (sadhaks) do dramas and chetaks

ਪ੍ਰਭ ਲੋਗਨ ਕਹ ਆਵਤ ਲਾਜਾ ॥੧੪॥
prabh logan kah aavat laajaa |14|

The saints of the Lord abhor the performance of miracles and malpractices. 14.

DOHRA

ਠੀਕਰ ਫੋਰਿ ਦਿਲੀਸ ਸਿਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਪੁਰਿ ਕੀਯਾ ਪਯਾਨ ॥
ttheekar for dilees sir prabh pur keeyaa payaan |

Breaking the potsherd of his body head of the king of Delhi (Aurangzeb), He left for the abode of the Lord.

ਤੇਗ ਬਹਾਦੁਰ ਸੀ ਕ੍ਰਿਆ ਕਰੀ ਨ ਕਿਨਹੂੰ ਆਨਿ ॥੧੫॥
teg bahaadur see kriaa karee na kinahoon aan |15|

None could perform such a feat as that of Tegh Bahadur.15.

ਤੇਗ ਬਹਾਦੁਰ ਕੇ ਚਲਤ ਭਯੋ ਜਗਤ ਕੋ ਸੋਕ ॥
teg bahaadur ke chalat bhayo jagat ko sok |

The whole world bemoaned the departure of Tegh Bahadur.

ਹੈ ਹੈ ਹੈ ਸਭ ਜਗ ਭਯੋ ਜੈ ਜੈ ਜੈ ਸੁਰ ਲੋਕਿ ॥੧੬॥
hai hai hai sabh jag bhayo jai jai jai sur lok |16|

Whit the world Iamented, the gods hailed his arrival in heavens.16.

ਇਤਿ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਬਚਿਤ੍ਰ ਨਾਟਕ ਗ੍ਰੰਥੇ ਪਾਤਸਾਹੀ ਬਰਨਨੰ ਨਾਮ ਪੰਚਮੋ ਧਿਆਉ ਸਮਾਪਤਮ ਸਤ ਸੁਭਮ ਸਤੁ ॥੫॥੨੧੫॥

CHAUPAI

ਅਬ ਮੈ ਅਪਨੀ ਕਥਾ ਬਖਾਨੋ ॥
ab mai apanee kathaa bakhaano |

Now I preface my speech,

ਤਪ ਸਾਧਤ ਜਿਹ ਬਿਧਿ ਮੁਹਿ ਆਨੋ ॥
tap saadhat jih bidh muhi aano |

Now I relate my own story as to how I was brought here, while I was absorbed in deep meditation.

ਹੇਮ ਕੁੰਟ ਪਰਬਤ ਹੈ ਜਹਾ ॥
hem kuntt parabat hai jahaa |

Where is Hemkunt mountain

ਸਪਤ ਸ੍ਰਿੰਗ ਸੋਭਿਤ ਹੈ ਤਹਾ ॥੧॥
sapat sring sobhit hai tahaa |1|

The site was the mountain named Hemkunt, with seven peaks and looks there very impressive.1.

ਸਪਤਸ੍ਰਿੰਗ ਤਿਹ ਨਾਮੁ ਕਹਾਵਾ ॥
sapatasring tih naam kahaavaa |

The name of that (place) came to be called 'Spatsring'

ਪੰਡੁ ਰਾਜ ਜਹ ਜੋਗੁ ਕਮਾਵਾ ॥
pandd raaj jah jog kamaavaa |

That mountain is called Sapt Shring (seven-peaked mountain), where the Pandavas Practised Yoga.

ਤਹ ਹਮ ਅਧਿਕ ਤਪਸਿਆ ਸਾਧੀ ॥
tah ham adhik tapasiaa saadhee |

We did a lot of penance at that place

ਮਹਾਕਾਲ ਕਾਲਕਾ ਅਰਾਧੀ ॥੨॥
mahaakaal kaalakaa araadhee |2|

There I was absorbed in deep meditation on the Primal Power, the Supreme KAL.2.

ਇਹ ਬਿਧਿ ਕਰਤ ਤਪਸਿਆ ਭਯੋ ॥
eih bidh karat tapasiaa bhayo |

Thus doing penance (and finally the results of penance)

ਦ੍ਵੈ ਤੇ ਏਕ ਰੂਪ ਹ੍ਵੈ ਗਯੋ ॥
dvai te ek roop hvai gayo |

In this way, my meditation reached its zenith and I became One with the Omnipotent Lord.

ਤਾਤ ਮਾਤ ਮੁਰ ਅਲਖ ਅਰਾਧਾ ॥
taat maat mur alakh araadhaa |

My parents worshiped God

ਬਹੁ ਬਿਧਿ ਜੋਗ ਸਾਧਨਾ ਸਾਧਾ ॥੩॥
bahu bidh jog saadhanaa saadhaa |3|

My parents also meditated for the union with the Incomprehensible Lord and performed many types of disciplines for union.3.

ਤਿਨ ਜੋ ਕਰੀ ਅਲਖ ਕੀ ਸੇਵਾ ॥
tin jo karee alakh kee sevaa |

The service they did to Alakh (God),

ਤਾ ਤੇ ਭਏ ਪ੍ਰਸੰਨਿ ਗੁਰਦੇਵਾ ॥
taa te bhe prasan guradevaa |

The service that they rendered the Incomprehensible Lord, caused the pleasure of the Supreme Guru (i.e. Lord).

ਤਿਨ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਜਬ ਆਇਸੁ ਮੁਹਿ ਦੀਆ ॥
tin prabh jab aaeis muhi deea |

When the Lord allowed me

ਤਬ ਹਮ ਜਨਮ ਕਲੂ ਮਹਿ ਲੀਆ ॥੪॥
tab ham janam kaloo meh leea |4|

When the Lord ordered me, I was born in this Iron age.4.

ਚਿਤ ਨ ਭਯੋ ਹਮਰੋ ਆਵਨ ਕਹਿ ॥
chit na bhayo hamaro aavan keh |

He did not mind our coming

ਚੁਭੀ ਰਹੀ ਸ੍ਰੁਤਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਚਰਨਨ ਮਹਿ ॥
chubhee rahee srut prabh charanan meh |

I had no desire to come, because I was totally absorbed in devotion for the Holy feet of the Lord.

ਜਿਉ ਤਿਉ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਹਮ ਕੋ ਸਮਝਾਯੋ ॥
jiau tiau prabh ham ko samajhaayo |

As the Lord explained to us

ਇਮ ਕਹਿ ਕੈ ਇਹ ਲੋਕਿ ਪਠਾਯੋ ॥੫॥
eim keh kai ih lok patthaayo |5|

But the Lord made me understand His Will and sent me in this world with the following words.5.

ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਬਾਚ ਇਸ ਕੀਟ ਪ੍ਰਤਿ ॥
akaal purakh baach is keett prat |

The Words of the Non-temporal Lord to this insect:

ਚੌਪਈ ॥

CHAUPAI

ਜਬ ਪਹਿਲੇ ਹਮ ਸ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਬਨਾਈ ॥
jab pahile ham srisatt banaaee |

When first we created creation,

ਦਈਤ ਰਚੇ ਦੁਸਟ ਦੁਖ ਦਾਈ ॥
deet rache dusatt dukh daaee |

When I created the world in the beginning, I created the ignominious and dreadful Daityas.

ਤੇ ਭੁਜ ਬਲ ਬਵਰੇ ਹ੍ਵੈ ਗਏ ॥
te bhuj bal bavare hvai ge |

They went crazy on their Bhuj-Bal

ਪੂਜਤ ਪਰਮ ਪੁਰਖ ਰਹਿ ਗਏ ॥੬॥
poojat param purakh reh ge |6|

Who became mad with power and abandoned the worship of Supreme Purusha.6.

ਤੇ ਹਮ ਤਮਕਿ ਤਨਿਕ ਮੋ ਖਾਪੇ ॥
te ham tamak tanik mo khaape |

In our anger, we destroyed them.

ਤਿਨ ਕੀ ਠਉਰ ਦੇਵਤਾ ਥਾਪੇ ॥
tin kee tthaur devataa thaape |

I destroyed them in no time and created gods in their place.

ਤੇ ਭੀ ਬਲਿ ਪੂਜਾ ਉਰਝਾਏ ॥
te bhee bal poojaa urajhaae |

They also got involved in their sacrifice and worship

ਆਪਨ ਹੀ ਪਰਮੇਸੁਰ ਕਹਾਏ ॥੭॥
aapan hee paramesur kahaae |7|

They were also absorbed in the worship of power and called themselves Ominipotednt.7.

ਮਹਾਦੇਵ ਅਚੁਤ ਕਹਵਾਯੋ ॥
mahaadev achut kahavaayo |

Shiva called (himself) Adig ('Achuta').
