ਰੂਮ ਸਹਿਰ ਕੇ ਸਾਹ ਕੀ ਸੁਤਾ ਜਲੀਖਾ ਨਾਮ ॥
room sahir ke saah kee sutaa jaleekhaa naam |

The king of the city of Rum had a daughter named Zulaikhan.

ਕਿਧੌ ਕਾਮ ਕੀ ਕਾਮਨੀ ਕਿਧੌ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਕਾਮ ॥੧॥
kidhau kaam kee kaamanee kidhau aap hee kaam |1|

Either she was Kam Dev's wife (Rati) or Kam Dev himself. 1.

ਅਤਿ ਜੋਬਨ ਤਾ ਕੈ ਦਿਪੈ ਸਭ ਅੰਗਨ ਕੇ ਸਾਥ ॥
at joban taa kai dipai sabh angan ke saath |

His excessive energy used to affect all the organs.

ਦਿਨ ਆਸਿਕ ਦਿਨਪਤਿ ਰਹੈ ਨਿਸੁ ਆਸਿਕ ਨਿਸਨਾਥ ॥੨॥
din aasik dinapat rahai nis aasik nisanaath |2|

During the day the sun was his lover and at night the moon was his lover. 2.

ਸਹਸਾਨਨ ਸੋਭਾ ਭਨੈ ਲਿਖਤ ਸਹਸ ਭੁਜ ਜਾਹਿ ॥
sahasaanan sobhaa bhanai likhat sahas bhuj jaeh |

(J) Sheshnag ('Sahsanan') should extol her beauty and write Sahasrabahu.

ਤਦਿਪ ਜਲੀਖਾ ਕੀ ਪ੍ਰਭਾ ਬਰਨਿ ਨ ਆਵਤ ਤਾਹਿ ॥੩॥
tadip jaleekhaa kee prabhaa baran na aavat taeh |3|

Even so, the beauty of Zulaikhas cannot be described from them. 3.

ਮਿਸਰ ਸਾਹ ਕੋ ਪੂਤ ਭਣਿਜੈ ॥
misar saah ko poot bhanijai |

He was said to be a son of the king of Egypt.

ਯੂਸਫ ਖਾ ਤਿਹ ਨਾਮ ਕਹਿਜੈ ॥
yoosaf khaa tih naam kahijai |

His name was Yusuf Khan.

ਜੋ ਅਬਲਾ ਤਿਹ ਨੈਕੁ ਨਿਹਾਰੈ ॥
jo abalaa tih naik nihaarai |

The woman who saw him for a moment,

ਚਟ ਦੈ ਲਾਜ ਬਸਤ੍ਰ ਕੌ ਫਾਰੈ ॥੪॥
chatt dai laaj basatr kau faarai |4|

She would quickly tear the lodge-shaped armor. 4.

ਦੋਹਰਾ ॥

dual:

ਤਾ ਕੇ ਤਨ ਮੈ ਅਤਿ ਪ੍ਰਭਾ ਆਪਿ ਕਰੀ ਕਰਤਾਰ ॥
taa ke tan mai at prabhaa aap karee karataar |

The extreme beauty of her body was created by the Lord Himself.

ਪੈਗੰਬਰ ਅੰਬਰ ਤਿਸੈ ਕਹਤ ਸੁ ਬੁਧਿ ਬਿਚਾਰਿ ॥੫॥
paiganbar anbar tisai kahat su budh bichaar |5|

Thoughtful and intelligent people used to call him the bearer of the armor (body) of the Prophet. (meaning they considered him a prophet) 5.

twenty four:

ਤਾ ਕੇ ਭ੍ਰਾਤ ਸਕਲ ਰਿਸਿ ਧਾਰੈ ॥
taa ke bhraat sakal ris dhaarai |

All his brothers were enmity (with him).

ਹਮ ਕ੍ਯੋਨ ਹੂੰ ਯੂਸਫ ਕੌ ਮਾਰੈ ॥
ham kayon hoon yoosaf kau maarai |

(And thought that) we should somehow kill Yusuf.

ਹਮਰੋ ਰੂਪ ਕਰਿਯੋ ਘਟ ਕਰਤਾ ॥
hamaro roop kariyo ghatt karataa |

(They also thought that) God has made our form less (beautiful) than that.

ਯਾ ਕੋ ਰੂਪ ਦੁਖਨ ਕੋ ਹਰਤਾ ॥੬॥
yaa ko roop dukhan ko harataa |6|

Its form is the destroyer of suffering. 6.

ਤਾ ਕੋ ਲੈ ਅਖੇਟ ਕਹਿ ਗਏ ॥
taa ko lai akhett keh ge |

(Then they) took him and went hunting

ਬਹੁ ਬਿਧਿ ਮ੍ਰਿਗਨ ਸੰਘਾਰਤ ਭਏ ॥
bahu bidh mrigan sanghaarat bhe |

and continued to kill the deer (or wild animals) in a great manner.

ਅਧਿਕ ਪ੍ਯਾਸ ਜਬ ਤਾਹਿ ਸਤਾਯੋ ॥
adhik payaas jab taeh sataayo |

When he (Yusuf) was tormented by thirst,

ਏਕ ਕੂਪ ਭ੍ਰਾਤਾਨ ਤਕਾਯੋ ॥੭॥
ek koop bhraataan takaayo |7|

So (to him) the brothers showed a well. 7.

ਤਹ ਹਮ ਜਾਇ ਪਾਨਿ ਸਭ ਪੀਯੈ ॥
tah ham jaae paan sabh peeyai |

(They said) We all go there and drink water

ਸੋਕ ਨਿਵਾਰਿ ਸੁਖੀ ਹ੍ਵੈ ਜੀਯੈ ॥
sok nivaar sukhee hvai jeeyai |

And by removing the pain (caused by thirst) we are happy.

ਯੂਸਫ ਬਾਤ ਨ ਪਾਵਤ ਭਯੋ ॥
yoosaf baat na paavat bhayo |

Yusuf could not understand (them).

ਜਹ ਵਹ ਕੂਪ ਹੁਤੋ ਤਹ ਗਯੋ ॥੮॥
jah vah koop huto tah gayo |8|

And where that well was, he went there. 8.

ਚਲਿ ਬਨ ਮੈ ਜਬ ਕੂਪ ਨਿਹਾਰਿਯੋ ॥
chal ban mai jab koop nihaariyo |

When I saw the well while walking in the forest

ਗਹਿ ਭਇਯਨ ਤਾ ਮੈ ਤਿਹ ਡਾਰਿਯੋ ॥
geh bheiyan taa mai tih ddaariyo |

So the brothers caught him and threw him into the well.

ਘਰ ਯੌ ਆਨਿ ਸੰਦੇਸੋ ਦਯੋ ॥
ghar yau aan sandeso dayo |

He came home and gave this message

ਯੂਸਫ ਆਜੁ ਸਿੰਘ ਭਖਿ ਲਯੋ ॥੯॥
yoosaf aaj singh bhakh layo |9|

That Yusuf has been eaten by a lion today. 9.

ਖੋਜਿ ਸਕਲ ਯੂਸਫ ਕੋ ਹਾਰੇ ॥
khoj sakal yoosaf ko haare |

Everyone got tired of searching for Yusuf

ਅਸੁਖ ਭਏ ਸੁਖ ਸਭੈ ਬਿਸਾਰੇ ॥
asukh bhe sukh sabhai bisaare |

And became sad, (their) happiness ended.

ਤਹਾ ਏਕ ਸੌਦਾਗਰ ਆਯੋ ॥
tahaa ek sauadaagar aayo |

A merchant came there

ਕੂਪ ਬਿਖੈ ਤੇ ਤਾ ਕਹ ਪਾਯੋ ॥੧੦॥
koop bikhai te taa kah paayo |10|

And he saw Yusuf in the well. 10.

ਤਾ ਕਹ ਸੰਗ ਅਪੁਨੇ ਕਰਿ ਲਯੋ ॥
taa kah sang apune kar layo |

He took him with him (by taking him out of the well).

ਬੇਚਨ ਸਾਹ ਰੂਮ ਕੇ ਗਯੋ ॥
bechan saah room ke gayo |

And the room went to sell to the king of the country.

ਅਧਿਕ ਮੋਲ ਕੋਊ ਨਹਿ ਲੇਵੈ ॥
adhik mol koaoo neh levai |

(He used to charge Yusuf the merchant) so much that no one would take it.

ਗ੍ਰਿਹ ਕੋ ਕਾਢਿ ਸਕਲ ਧਨੁ ਦੇਵੈ ॥੧੧॥
grih ko kaadt sakal dhan devai |11|

(Even if) why should someone take all the wealth of the house and give it away? 11.

ਦੋਹਰਾ ॥

dual:

ਜਬੈ ਜਲੀਖਾ ਯੂਸਫਹਿ ਰੂਪ ਬਿਲੋਕ੍ਯੋ ਜਾਇ ॥
jabai jaleekhaa yoosafeh roop bilokayo jaae |

When the Zulaikhas went and saw Yusuf's form

ਬਸੁ ਅਸੁ ਦੈ ਤਾ ਕੋ ਤੁਰਤ ਲਿਯੋ ਸੁ ਮੋਲ ਬਨਾਇ ॥੧੨॥
bas as dai taa ko turat liyo su mol banaae |12|

And somehow fixed the price and took it away. 12.

twenty four:

ਮੁਖ ਮਾਗ੍ਯੋ ਤਾ ਕੋ ਧਨੁ ਦਿਯੋ ॥
mukh maagayo taa ko dhan diyo |

He (the merchant) gave the money he asked for

ਯੂਸਫ ਮੋਲ ਅਮੋਲਕ ਲਿਯੋ ॥
yoosaf mol amolak liyo |

And Amolak took Yusuf as his son.

ਭਾਤਿ ਭਾਤਿ ਸੇਤੀ ਤਿਹ ਪਾਰਿਯੋ ॥
bhaat bhaat setee tih paariyo |

He was brought up in many ways (including warmth).

ਬਡੋ ਭਯੋ ਇਹ ਭਾਤਿ ਉਚਾਰਿਯੋ ॥੧੩॥
baddo bhayo ih bhaat uchaariyo |13|

When he grew up, he said like this. 13.

ਚਿਤ੍ਰਸਾਲ ਤਾ ਕੌ ਲੈ ਗਈ ॥
chitrasaal taa kau lai gee |

Took her to Chitrashala

ਨਾਨਾ ਚਿਤ੍ਰ ਦਿਖਾਵਤ ਭਈ ॥
naanaa chitr dikhaavat bhee |

And many kinds of pictures started showing.

ਅਧਿਕ ਯੂਸਫਹਿ ਜਬੈ ਰਿਝਾਯੋ ॥
adhik yoosafeh jabai rijhaayo |

When (he) took Yusuf very well

ਤਬ ਤਾ ਸੋ ਯੌ ਬਚਨ ਸੁਨਾਯੋ ॥੧੪॥
tab taa so yau bachan sunaayo |14|

Then shared words with him. 14.

ਹਮ ਤੁਮ ਆਜੁ ਕਰੈ ਰਤਿ ਦੋਊ ॥
ham tum aaj karai rat doaoo |

(started to say) let me and you both cohabit.

ਹੈ ਨ ਇਹਾ ਠਾਢੋ ਜਨ ਕੋਊ ॥
hai na ihaa tthaadto jan koaoo |

No one is standing here.

ਕਵਨ ਲਖੇ ਕਾ ਸੋ ਕੋਊ ਕਹਿ ਹੈ ॥
kavan lakhe kaa so koaoo keh hai |

Who will see and tell whom?

ਹ੍ਯਾਂ ਕੋ ਆਨਿ ਰਮਤ ਹਮ ਗਹਿ ਹੈ ॥੧੫॥
hayaan ko aan ramat ham geh hai |15|

Who will come here and catch us enjoying ourselves? 15.

ਦੋਹਰਾ ॥

dual:

ਮੈ ਤਰੁਨੀ ਤੁਮ ਹੂੰ ਤਰੁਨ ਦੁਹੂੰਅਨ ਰੂਪ ਅਪਾਰ ॥
mai tarunee tum hoon tarun duhoonan roop apaar |

I am young, you are also young and both of them have great looks.

ਸੰਕ ਤ੍ਯਾਗਿ ਰਤਿ ਕੀਜਿਯੈ ਕਤ ਜਕਿ ਰਹੇ ਕੁਮਾਰ ॥੧੬॥
sank tayaag rat keejiyai kat jak rahe kumaar |16|

Hey Kumar! Let go of the shyness and play the game, why are you hesitating. 16.

ਚੌਪਈ ॥

twenty four:

ਤੈ ਜੁ ਕਹਤ ਨਹਿ ਕੋਊ ਨਿਹਾਰੈ ॥
tai ju kahat neh koaoo nihaarai |

(Yusuf answered) What you say that no one is seeing (us),

ਆਂਧਰ ਜ੍ਯੋਂ ਤੈ ਬਚਨ ਉਚਾਰੈ ॥
aandhar jayon tai bachan uchaarai |

You have spoken like a blind man.

ਸਾਖੀ ਸਾਤ ਸੰਗ ਕੇ ਲਹਿ ਹੈ ॥
saakhee saat sang ke leh hai |

(We who) are taken with the seven Sakhis (water, fire, air, sky, earth, sun and moon).

ਅਬ ਹੀ ਜਾਇ ਧਰਮ ਤਨ ਕਹਿ ਹੈ ॥੧੭॥
ab hee jaae dharam tan keh hai |17|

They will go and tell Dharmaraj now. 17.

ਅੜਿਲ ॥
arril |

adamant:

ਧਰਮਰਾਇ ਕੀ ਸਭਾ ਜਬੈ ਦੋਊ ਜਾਇ ਹੈਂ ॥
dharamaraae kee sabhaa jabai doaoo jaae hain |

When (we) both will go to the assembly of Dharmaraj

ਕਹਾ ਬਦਨ ਲੈ ਤਾ ਸੌ ਉਤ੍ਰ ਦਿਯਾਇ ਹੈ ॥
kahaa badan lai taa sau utr diyaae hai |

So with which face will they answer him?

ਇਨ ਬਾਤਨ ਕੌ ਤੈ ਤ੍ਰਿਯ ਕਹਾ ਬਿਚਾਰਈ ॥
ein baatan kau tai triy kahaa bichaaree |

These things, O woman! what are you thinking

ਹੋ ਮਹਾ ਨਰਕ ਕੇ ਬੀਚ ਨ ਮੋ ਕੌ ਡਾਰਈ ॥੧੮॥
ho mahaa narak ke beech na mo kau ddaaree |18|

Do not throw me into the great hell. 18.

ਸਾਲਗ੍ਰਾਮ ਪਰਮੇਸ੍ਰ ਇਹੀ ਗਤਿ ਤੇ ਭਏ ॥
saalagraam paramesr ihee gat te bhe |

By doing the same trick ('Gati'), God became Salgram.

ਦਸ ਰਾਵਨ ਕੇ ਸੀਸ ਇਹੀ ਬਾਤਨ ਗਏ ॥
das raavan ke sees ihee baatan ge |

After saying these things, Ravana lost ten heads.

ਸਹਸ ਭਗਨ ਬਾਸਵ ਯਾਹੀ ਤੇ ਪਾਇਯੋ ॥
sahas bhagan baasav yaahee te paaeiyo |

That is why Indra got a thousand birthmarks (on his body).

ਹੋ ਇਨ ਬਾਤਨ ਤੇ ਮਦਨ ਅਨੰਗ ਕਹਾਇਯੋ ॥੧੯॥
ho in baatan te madan anang kahaaeiyo |19|

After doing these things, Kaam Dev called Anang (Ang Hin). 19.
