ਮੋਰੇ ਧਾਮ ਪੂਤ ਬਿਧਿ ਦਯੋ ॥
more dhaam poot bidh dayo |That God has given a son to my house.
ਧਾਮ ਜਵਾਈ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਤਾਯੋ ॥
dhaam javaaee naam jataayo |Whose name was Ghar-jawai; she served him dainty foods.(4)
ਆਦਰੁ ਕੈ ਭੋਜਨਹਿ ਖਵਾਯੋ ॥੪॥
aadar kai bhojaneh khavaayo |4|And (that widow) made food with great respect. 4.

ਐਸੀ ਭਾਤਿ ਬਰਿਸ ਜਬ ਬੀਤੀ ॥
aaisee bhaat baris jab beetee |Thus when a year had passed,
ਵਹ ਤ੍ਰਿਯ ਦੁਖ ਤੇ ਭਈ ਨਿਚੀਤੀ ॥
vah triy dukh te bhee nicheetee |A year had gone by when she felt relieved of all her tribulations.
ਵਹ ਤਿਹ ਘਰ ਕੋ ਕਾਮੁ ਚਲਾਵੈ ॥
vah tih ghar ko kaam chalaavai |He (the thief) used to run the chores of his house
ਬਿਧਵਾ ਬਧੂ ਖੇਦ ਨਹਿ ਪਾਵੈ ॥੫॥
bidhavaa badhoo khed neh paavai |5|The thief used to perform her all the domestic errands, and she never worried for any thing.(5)
ਦੋਹਰਾ ॥

ਕੇਤਿਕ ਦਿਨ ਤਹ ਚਲਿ ਗਯੋ ਤਾ ਕੀ ਸੁਤਾ ਚੁਰਾਇ ॥
ketik din tah chal gayo taa kee sutaa churaae |After some time he trammeled her daughter and took her away.
ਤ੍ਰਿਯ ਰੋਵਤ ਕੁਟਵਾਰ ਕੇ ਤਟ ਚਟ ਕੂਕੀ ਜਾਇ ॥੬॥
triy rovat kuttavaar ke tatt chatt kookee jaae |6|Crying and wailing she went to the city policeman.(6)
ਚੌਪਈ ॥

ਧਾਮ ਜਵਾਈ ਦੁਹਿਤਾ ਹਰੀ ॥
dhaam javaaee duhitaa haree |(They started saying) 'Ghar-jawai' has stolen my daughter.
ਦੇਖਹ ਦੈਵ ਕਹਾ ਇਹ ਕਰੀ ॥
dekhah daiv kahaa ih karee |She cried, ‘Live-in son-in-law has run away with my daughter.
ਸੂਰ ਉਦੋਤ ਗਯੋ ਨਹਿ ਆਯੋ ॥
soor udot gayo neh aayo |At sunrise (he) has gone, but has not (yet) returned.
ਮੈ ਤਿਨ ਕੋ ਕਛੁ ਸੋਧ ਨ ਪਾਯੋ ॥੭॥
mai tin ko kachh sodh na paayo |7|‘The Sun has set, but he has not come back. I have no news of them.’(7)
ਕਾਜੀ ਕੋਟਵਾਰ ਜਬ ਸੁਨ੍ਯੋ ॥
kaajee kottavaar jab sunayo |When Qazi and Kotwal heard the talk.
ਦੁਹੂੰ ਬਿਹਸਿ ਕੈ ਮਾਥੋ ਧੁਨ੍ਰਯੋ ॥
duhoon bihas kai maatho dhunrayo |When the Quazi (the justice) and the policeman heard this, they both, laughingly, shook their heads.
ਜਾ ਕੋ ਸੁਤਾ ਦਾਨੁ ਤੈ ਦਯੋ ॥
jaa ko sutaa daan tai dayo |To whom you gave your daughter as a gift
ਕਹਾ ਭਯੋ ਜੌ ਗ੍ਰਿਹ ਲੈ ਗਯੋ ॥੮॥
kahaa bhayo jau grih lai gayo |8|‘When you have married your daughter to him, then what if he has taken her to his house.’(8)
ਸਭਹਿਨ ਤਹਿ ਝੂਠੀ ਕਰਿ ਮਾਨ੍ਯੋ ॥
sabhahin teh jhootthee kar maanayo |Everyone believed him to be a liar
ਭੇਦ ਅਭੇਦ ਕਛੁ ਹ੍ਰਿਦੈ ਨ ਜਾਨ੍ਯੋ ॥
bhed abhed kachh hridai na jaanayo |Everybody branded her as a liar without understanding the secret.
ਲੂਟਿ ਦਰਬੁ ਤਾ ਕੋ ਸਭ ਲਯੋ ॥
loott darab taa ko sabh layo |Robbed all his (widow's) wealth
ਤਬ ਹੀ ਦੇਸ ਨਿਕਾਰੋ ਦਯੋ ॥੯॥
tab hee des nikaaro dayo |9|Rather she was plundered and banished from the country.(9)(1)

ਚੰਦ੍ਰਪੁਰੀ ਭੀਤਰ ਹੁਤੋ ਚੰਦ੍ਰ ਸੈਨ ਇਕ ਰਾਵ ॥
chandrapuree bheetar huto chandr sain ik raav |In Chandra Puri there lived a Raja, called Chandra Sen.
ਬਲ ਗੁਨ ਬੀਰਜ ਮੈ ਜਨੁਕ ਤ੍ਰਿਦਸੇਸ੍ਵਰ ਕੇ ਭਾਵ ॥੧॥
bal gun beeraj mai januk tridasesvar ke bhaav |1|In power and intelligence he was embodiment of Lord Indra.(1)
ਭਾਗਵਤੀ ਤਾ ਕੀ ਤ੍ਰਿਯਾ ਜਾ ਕੋ ਰੂਪ ਅਪਾਰ ॥
bhaagavatee taa kee triyaa jaa ko roop apaar |His wife, Bhagwati, was bestowed with extreme beauty,
ਰਤਿ ਰਤਿਨਾਥ ਪਛਾਨਿ ਤਿਹ ਝੁਕਿ ਝੁਕਿ ਕਰਹਿ ਜੁਹਾਰ ॥੨॥
rat ratinaath pachhaan tih jhuk jhuk kareh juhaar |2|Whom, even, the Cupid would bow to pay his obeisance.(2)
ਏਕ ਪੁਰਖ ਸੁੰਦਰ ਹੁਤੋ ਰਾਨੀ ਲਯੋ ਬੁਲਾਇ ॥
ek purakh sundar huto raanee layo bulaae |Once the Rani invited a very Handsome man,
ਭੋਗ ਅਧਿਕ ਤਾ ਸੋ ਕਿਯੋ ਹ੍ਰਿਦੈ ਹਰਖ ਉਪਜਾਇ ॥੩॥
bhog adhik taa so kiyo hridai harakh upajaae |3|She made love with him to her full satisfaction of her heart.(3)
ਚੌਪਈ ॥

ਕੇਲ ਕਰਤ ਰਾਜਾ ਜੂ ਆਯੋ ॥
kel karat raajaa joo aayo |Raja appeared when they were making love.
ਰਾਨੀ ਹ੍ਰਿਦੈ ਅਧਿਕ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਯੋ ॥
raanee hridai adhik dukh paayo |Rani was very much anguished.
ਯਾ ਕੋ ਦਯਾ ਕਹੌ ਕਾ ਕਰਿਹੌ ॥
yaa ko dayaa kahau kaa karihau |(She thought,) ‘What should I do about him.
ਯਾ ਕੇ ਹਨੇ ਬਹੁਰਿ ਹੌ ਮਰਿਹੌ ॥੪॥
yaa ke hane bahur hau marihau |4|Should I kill him and then terminate my life.’( 4)
ਜਾਰ ਬਾਚ ॥
jaar baach |Dude said:
ਤਬੈ ਜਾਰ ਯੌ ਕਥਾ ਉਚਾਰੀ ॥
tabai jaar yau kathaa uchaaree |Then the fellow spoke thus,
ਰਾਨੀ ਕਰਹੁ ਨ ਚਿੰਤ ਹਮਾਰੀ ॥
raanee karahu na chint hamaaree |Then the paramour narrated, ‘Rani, don’t worry about me.
ਯਹ ਤਰਬੂਜ ਕਾਟਿ ਮੁਹਿ ਦੀਜੈ ॥
yah tarabooj kaatt muhi deejai |Cut this watermelon and give it to me.
ਯਾ ਕੀ ਗਰੀ ਭਛ ਕਰ ਲੀਜੈ ॥੫॥
yaa kee garee bhachh kar leejai |5|‘Give this melon to me after eating its pulp yourself.’(5)
ਤਬ ਰਾਨੀ ਸੋਊ ਕਾਜ ਕਮਾਯੋ ॥
tab raanee soaoo kaaj kamaayo |Then the queen acted in the same way.
ਕਾਟਿ ਤਾਹਿ ਤਰਬੂਜ ਖੁਲਾਯੋ ॥
kaatt taeh tarabooj khulaayo |Rani complied and after cutting it let him eat the melon.
ਲੈ ਖੋਪਰ ਤਿਨ ਸਿਰ ਪੈ ਧਰਿਯੋ ॥
lai khopar tin sir pai dhariyo |He took the (watermelon) skull and put it on his head
ਸ੍ਵਾਸ ਲੇਤ ਕਹ ਛੇਕੌ ਕਰਿਯੋ ॥੬॥
svaas let kah chhekau kariyo |6|Then she replaced the shell on his head and made a whole at the top for breathing.( 6)

ਧਰਿ ਖੋਪਰ ਸਿਰ ਪਰ ਨਦੀ ਤਰਿਯੋ ਨ੍ਰਿਪਤਿ ਡਰ ਸੋਇ ॥
dhar khopar sir par nadee tariyo nripat ddar soe |With shell on the head, he went across swimming.
