ਬਜੇ ਲੋਹ ਕ੍ਰੋਹੰ ਮਹਾ ਜੰਗਿ ਮਚਿਯੰ ॥੪੧॥
baje loh krohan mahaa jang machiyan |41|

Hearing the cracking sound bows, the warriors of great endurance are becoming cowards. The steel clatters in rage with steel nad the great war is in progress.41.

ਬਿਰਚੇ ਮਹਾ ਜੁਧ ਜੋਧਾ ਜੁਆਣੰ ॥
birache mahaa judh jodhaa juaanan |

Young warriors have created a great war.

ਖੁਲੇ ਖਗ ਖਤ੍ਰੀ ਅਭੂਤੰ ਭਯਾਣੰ ॥
khule khag khatree abhootan bhayaanan |

The youthful warriors are moving in this great war, with naked swords the fighters look wonderfully terrible.

ਬਲੀ ਜੁਝ ਰੁਝੈ ਰਸੰ ਰੁਦ੍ਰ ਰਤੇ ॥
balee jujh rujhai rasan rudr rate |

The mighty warriors enshrined in Rudra Rasa are engaged in war

ਮਿਲੇ ਹਥ ਬਖੰ ਮਹਾ ਤੇਜ ਤਤੇ ॥੪੨॥
mile hath bakhan mahaa tej tate |42|

Adsorbed in violent rage, the brave warriors are engaged in war. The heroes with utmost enthusiasm are catching hold the waists of opponents in order to throw them down.42.

ਝਮੀ ਤੇਜ ਤੇਗੰ ਸੁ ਰੋਸੰ ਪ੍ਰਹਾਰੰ ॥
jhamee tej tegan su rosan prahaaran |

Sharp swords flash, strike with fury,

ਰੁਲੇ ਰੁੰਡ ਮੁੰਡੰ ਉਠੀ ਸਸਤ੍ਰ ਝਾਰੰ ॥
rule rundd munddan utthee sasatr jhaaran |

The sharp swords glisten and are struck with great rage. Somewhere the trunks and heads are rolling in dust and with the collision of weapons, the fire-sparks arise.

ਬਬਕੰਤ ਬੀਰੰ ਭਭਕੰਤ ਘਾਯੰ ॥
babakant beeran bhabhakant ghaayan |

The warriors are fighting, the blood is flowing from the wounds;

ਮਨੋ ਜੁਧ ਇੰਦ੍ਰੰ ਜੁਟਿਓ ਬ੍ਰਿਤਰਾਯੰ ॥੪੩॥
mano judh indran juttio britaraayan |43|

Somewhere the warriors are shouting and somewhere the blood is emerging out of the wounds. It appears that Indira and Britrasura are engaged in war 43.

ਮਹਾ ਜੁਧ ਮਚਿਯੰ ਮਹਾ ਸੂਰ ਗਾਜੇ ॥
mahaa judh machiyan mahaa soor gaaje |

A great war has broken out, great warriors are roaring,

ਆਪੋ ਆਪ ਮੈ ਸਸਤ੍ਰ ਸੋਂ ਸਸਤ੍ਰ ਬਾਜੇ ॥
aapo aap mai sasatr son sasatr baaje |

The terrible war is in progress in which the great heroes are thundering. The weapons collide with the confronting weapons.

ਉਠੇ ਝਾਰ ਸਾਗੰ ਮਚੇ ਲੋਹ ਕ੍ਰੋਹੰ ॥
autthe jhaar saagan mache loh krohan |

Sparks are emanating (from them with the thrust of spears), weapons sounding in anger,

ਮਨੋ ਖੇਲ ਬਾਸੰਤ ਮਾਹੰਤ ਸੋਹੰ ॥੪੪॥
mano khel baasant maahant sohan |44|

The sparks of fire came out of the striking spears and in violent rage, the steel reigns supreme; it seems that good persons, looking impressive, are playing Holi.44.

ਰਸਾਵਲ ਛੰਦ ॥
rasaaval chhand |

RASAAVAL STANZA

ਜਿਤੇ ਬੈਰ ਰੁਝੰ ॥
jite bair rujhan |

As many (soldiers) were engaged (in war) with enmity,

ਤਿਤੇ ਅੰਤਿ ਜੁਝੰ ॥
tite ant jujhan |

All the fighters engaged in war against their enemies, ultimately fell as martyrs.

ਜਿਤੇ ਖੇਤਿ ਭਾਜੇ ॥
jite khet bhaaje |

As many as fled from the war-land,

ਤਿਤੇ ਅੰਤਿ ਲਾਜੇ ॥੪੫॥
tite ant laaje |45|

All those who have run away from the battlefield, they all feel ashamed at the end. 45.

ਤੁਟੇ ਦੇਹ ਬਰਮੰ ॥
tutte deh baraman |

The armor over (the warriors') bodies is broken,

ਛੁਟੀ ਹਾਥ ਚਰਮੰ ॥
chhuttee haath charaman |

The armours of the bodies are broken and the shields have fallen from the hands.

ਕਹੂੰ ਖੇਤਿ ਖੋਲੰ ॥
kahoon khet kholan |

Somewhere in the war-ground there are helmets

ਗਿਰੇ ਸੂਰ ਟੋਲੰ ॥੪੬॥
gire soor ttolan |46|

Somewhere there are helmets scattered in the battlefield and somewhere the groups of warriors have fallen.46.

ਕਹੂੰ ਮੁਛ ਮੁਖੰ ॥
kahoon muchh mukhan |

Somewhere the mustached men (are lying)

ਕਹੂੰ ਸਸਤ੍ਰ ਸਖੰ ॥
kahoon sasatr sakhan |

Somewhere the faces with whiskers have fallen, somewhere only weapons are lying.

ਕਹੂੰ ਖੋਲ ਖਗੰ ॥
kahoon khol khagan |

There are sheaths of swords lying somewhere

ਕਹੂੰ ਪਰਮ ਪਗੰ ॥੪੭॥
kahoon param pagan |47|

Somewhere there are scabbards and swords and somewhere there are only few lying in the field.47.

ਗਹੇ ਮੁਛ ਬੰਕੀ ॥
gahe muchh bankee |

(Somewhere) proud warriors with long mustaches, holding (weapons)

ਮੰਡੇ ਆਨ ਹੰਕੀ ॥
mandde aan hankee |

Holding their winsome whiskers, the proud warriors are somewhere engaged in fighting.

ਢਕਾ ਢੁਕ ਢਾਲੰ ॥
dtakaa dtuk dtaalan |

The shields are hitting each other

ਉਠੇ ਹਾਲ ਚਾਲੰ ॥੪੮॥
autthe haal chaalan |48|

Somewhere the weapons are being struck with great knocking on the shield, a great commotion has arisen (in the field). 48

ਭੁਜੰਗ ਪ੍ਰਯਾਤ ਛੰਦ ॥
bhujang prayaat chhand |

BHUJANG PRAYAAT STANZA

ਖੁਲੇ ਖਗ ਖੂਨੀ ਮਹਾਬੀਰ ਖੇਤੰ ॥
khule khag khoonee mahaabeer khetan |

The warriors have drawn their bloody swords from their sheaths.

ਨਚੇ ਬੀਰ ਬੈਤਾਲਯੰ ਭੂਤ ਪ੍ਰੇਤੰ ॥
nache beer baitaalayan bhoot pretan |

The brave warriors are moving in the battlefield with naked swords, smeared with blood, evil spirits, ghosts, fiends and goblins are dancing.

ਬਜੇ ਡੰਗ ਡਉਰੂ ਉਠੇ ਨਾਦ ਸੰਖੰ ॥
baje ddang ddauroo utthe naad sankhan |

The bells are ringing, the numbers are blaring,

ਮਨੋ ਮਲ ਜੁਟੇ ਮਹਾ ਹਥ ਬਖੰ ॥੪੯॥
mano mal jutte mahaa hath bakhan |49|

The tabor and small drum resound and the sound of conches arises. It appears that the wrestlers, holding with their hands the waists of their opponents are trying to throw them down.49.

CHHAPAI STANZA

ਜਿਨਿ ਸੂਰਨ ਸੰਗ੍ਰਾਮ ਸਬਲ ਸਮੁਹਿ ਹ੍ਵੈ ਮੰਡਿਓ ॥
jin sooran sangraam sabal samuhi hvai manddio |

Those warriors who had begun the war confronted their opponents with great strength.

ਤਿਨ ਸੁਭਟਨ ਤੇ ਏਕ ਕਾਲ ਕੋਊ ਜੀਅਤ ਨ ਛਡਿਓ ॥
tin subhattan te ek kaal koaoo jeeat na chhaddio |

Out of those warriors the KAL had not left anyone alive.

ਸਬ ਖਤ੍ਰੀ ਖਗ ਖੰਡਿ ਖੇਤਿ ਤੇ ਭੂ ਮੰਡਪ ਅਹੁਟੇ ॥
sab khatree khag khandd khet te bhoo manddap ahutte |

All the warriors had gathered in the battlefield holding their swords.

ਸਾਰ ਧਾਰਿ ਧਰਿ ਧੂਮ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਬੰਧਨ ਤੇ ਛੁਟੇ ॥
saar dhaar dhar dhoom mukat bandhan te chhutte |

Enduring the somokeless fire of the steel-edge, they have saved themselves from the bondages.

ਹ੍ਵੈ ਟੂਕ ਟੂਕ ਜੁਝੇ ਸਬੈ ਪਾਵ ਨ ਪਾਛੇ ਡਾਰੀਯੰ ॥
hvai ttook ttook jujhe sabai paav na paachhe ddaareeyan |

They have all been chopped and fallen as martyrs and none of them hath retraced his steps.

ਜੈ ਕਾਰ ਅਪਾਰ ਸੁਧਾਰ ਹੂੰਅ ਬਾਸਵ ਲੋਕ ਸਿਧਾਰੀਯੰ ॥੫੦॥
jai kaar apaar sudhaar hoona baasav lok sidhaareeyan |50|

Those who have gone like this to the abode of Indra, they are hailed with utmost reverence in the world. 50.

CHAUPAI

ਇਹ ਬਿਧਿ ਮਚਾ ਘੋਰ ਸੰਗ੍ਰਾਮਾ ॥
eih bidh machaa ghor sangraamaa |

Thus a fierce war broke out

ਸਿਧਏ ਸੂਰ ਸੂਰ ਕੇ ਧਾਮਾ ॥
sidhe soor soor ke dhaamaa |

Suchlike horrible war blazed and the brave warriors left for their (heavenly) abode.

ਕਹਾ ਲਗੈ ਵਹ ਕਥੋ ਲਰਾਈ ॥
kahaa lagai vah katho laraaee |

How far shall I narrate that battle,

ਆਪਨ ਪ੍ਰਭਾ ਨ ਬਰਨੀ ਜਾਈ ॥੫੧॥
aapan prabhaa na baranee jaaee |51|

Upto which limit should I describe that war? I cannot describe it with my own understanding.51.

ਭੁਜੰਗ ਪ੍ਰਯਾਤ ਛੰਦ ॥
bhujang prayaat chhand |

BHUJANG PRAYAAT STANZA

ਲਵੀ ਸਰਬ ਜੀਤੇ ਕੁਸੀ ਸਰਬ ਹਾਰੇ ॥
lavee sarab jeete kusee sarab haare |

All those with love buns won and all those with kush buns lost.

ਬਚੇ ਜੇ ਬਲੀ ਪ੍ਰਾਨ ਲੈ ਕੇ ਸਿਧਾਰੇ ॥
bache je balee praan lai ke sidhaare |

(The descendants of Lava) have all been victorious and the (descendants of Kusha) were all defeated. The descendants of Kusha who remained alive, saved themselves by fleeing away.

ਚਤੁਰ ਬੇਦ ਪਠਿਯੰ ਕੀਯੋ ਕਾਸਿ ਬਾਸੰ ॥
chatur bed patthiyan keeyo kaas baasan |

He resided in Kashi and studied the four Vedas.

ਘਨੇ ਬਰਖ ਕੀਨੇ ਤਹਾ ਹੀ ਨਿਵਾਸੰ ॥੫੨॥
ghane barakh keene tahaa hee nivaasan |52|

They went to Kashi and real all the four Vedas. They lived there for many years.52.

ਇਤਿ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਬਚਿਤ੍ਰ ਨਾਟਕ ਗ੍ਰੰਥੇ ਲਵੀ ਕੁਸੀ ਜੁਧ ਬਰਨਨੰ ਤ੍ਰਿਤੀਆ ਧਿਆਉ ਸਮਾਪਤਮ ਸਤੁ ਸੁਭਮ ਸਤੁ ॥੩॥੧੮੯॥

BHUJANG PRAYAAT STANZA

ਜਿਨੈ ਬੇਦ ਪਠਿਯੋ ਸੁ ਬੇਦੀ ਕਹਾਏ ॥
jinai bed patthiyo su bedee kahaae |

Those who recited the Vedas were called Bedi;

ਤਿਨੈ ਧਰਮ ਕੈ ਕਰਮ ਨੀਕੇ ਚਲਾਏ ॥
tinai dharam kai karam neeke chalaae |

Those who studied the Vedas, called Vedis (Bedis), they absorbed themselves in good acts of righteousness.

ਪਠੇ ਕਾਗਦੰ ਮਦ੍ਰ ਰਾਜਾ ਸੁਧਾਰੰ ॥
patthe kaagadan madr raajaa sudhaaran |

(Hither) the king of Madra Des (Lavabansi) wrote a letter and sent it (Kashi).

ਆਪੋ ਆਪ ਮੋ ਬੈਰ ਭਾਵੰ ਬਿਸਾਰੰ ॥੧॥
aapo aap mo bair bhaavan bisaaran |1|

The Sodhi king of Madra Desha (Punjab) sent letters to them, entreating them to forget the past enmities.1.

ਨ੍ਰਿਪੰ ਮੁਕਲਿਯੰ ਦੂਤ ਸੋ ਕਾਸਿ ਆਯੰ ॥
nripan mukaliyan doot so kaas aayan |

The king's messenger who was sent (with the letter) reached Kashi

ਸਬੈ ਬੇਦਿਯੰ ਭੇਦ ਭਾਖੇ ਸੁਨਾਯੰ ॥
sabai bediyan bhed bhaakhe sunaayan |

The messengers sent by the king came to Kashi and gave the message to all the Bedis.

ਸਬੈ ਬੇਦ ਪਾਠੀ ਚਲੇ ਮਦ੍ਰ ਦੇਸੰ ॥
sabai bed paatthee chale madr desan |

(After listening to the angel) all the Veda-learners went towards Madra Desa (Punjab).

ਪ੍ਰਨਾਮ ਕੀਯੋ ਆਨ ਕੈ ਕੈ ਨਰੇਸੰ ॥੨॥
pranaam keeyo aan kai kai naresan |2|

All the reciters of the Vedas came to Madra Desha and made obeisance to the king.2.

ਧੁਨੰ ਬੇਦ ਕੀ ਭੂਪ ਤਾ ਤੇ ਕਰਾਈ ॥
dhunan bed kee bhoop taa te karaaee |

The king had them recite the Vedas.

ਸਬੈ ਪਾਸ ਬੈਠੇ ਸਭਾ ਬੀਚ ਭਾਈ ॥
sabai paas baitthe sabhaa beech bhaaee |

The king caused them to recite the Vedas in the traditional manner and all the brethren (both Sodhis and Pelis) sat tohether.

ਪੜੇ ਸਾਮ ਬੇਦ ਜੁਜਰ ਬੇਦ ਕਥੰ ॥
parre saam bed jujar bed kathan |

(First they) recited the Sama Veda, then described the Yajur Veda.

ਰਿਗੰ ਬੇਦ ਪਠਿਯੰ ਕਰੇ ਭਾਵ ਹਥੰ ॥੩॥
rigan bed patthiyan kare bhaav hathan |3|

Saam-Veda, Yajur-Veda and Rig-Ved were recited, the essence of the sayings was imbibed (by the king and his clan).3.

ਰਸਾਵਲ ਛੰਦ ॥
rasaaval chhand |

RASAAVAL STANZA

ਅਥਰ੍ਵ ਬੇਦ ਪਠਿਯੰ ॥
atharv bed patthiyan |

(When the Kush-bans) recited the Atharva Veda

ਸੁਨੈ ਪਾਪ ਨਠਿਯੰ ॥
sunai paap natthiyan |

The sin-remover Atharva-Veda was recited.

ਰਹਾ ਰੀਝ ਰਾਜਾ ॥
rahaa reejh raajaa |

The king was pleased

ਦੀਆ ਸਰਬ ਸਾਜਾ ॥੪॥
deea sarab saajaa |4|

The king was highly pleased and the bequeathed his kingdom to Bedis.4.
