ਕਉਨ ਕਉਨ ਉਚਾਰੀਐ ਕਰਿ ਸੂਰ ਸਰਬ ਬਿਬੇਕ ॥੫੪॥
kaun kaun uchaareeai kar soor sarab bibek |54|

Many of various names ruled over many places and with power of intellect, whose names should be mentioned, with their description? 54.

ਸਪਤ ਦੀਪਨ ਸਪਤ ਭੂਪ ਭੁਗੈ ਲਗੇ ਨਵਖੰਡ ॥
sapat deepan sapat bhoop bhugai lage navakhandd |

The seven kings of Satta Dipas began to enjoy (ie rule over) the nine khandas.

ਭਾਤਿ ਭਾਤਿਨ ਸੋ ਫਿਰੇ ਅਸਿ ਬਾਧਿ ਜੋਧ ਪ੍ਰਚੰਡ ॥
bhaat bhaatin so fire as baadh jodh prachandd |

The king ruled over seven continents and nine regions and taking up their swords, in various ways, they moved at all places powerfully

ਦੀਹ ਦੀਹ ਅਜੀਹ ਦੇਸਨਿ ਨਾਮ ਆਪਿ ਭਨਾਇ ॥
deeh deeh ajeeh desan naam aap bhanaae |

He started reciting the names of the biggest and biggest unconquerable countries.

ਆਨਿ ਜਾਨੁ ਦੁਤੀ ਭਏ ਛਿਤਿ ਦੂਸਰੇ ਹਰਿ ਰਾਇ ॥੫੫॥
aan jaan dutee bhe chhit doosare har raae |55|

They forcefully promulgated their names and it seemed that they were the incarnation of the Lord on the earth.55.

ਆਪ ਆਪ ਸਮੈ ਸਬੈ ਸਿਰਿ ਅਤ੍ਰ ਪਤ੍ਰ ਫਿਰਾਇ ॥
aap aap samai sabai sir atr patr firaae |

Everyone in their own time has put an umbrella over (their own) head.

ਜੀਤਿ ਜੀਤਿ ਅਜੀਤ ਜੋਧਨ ਰੋਹ ਕ੍ਰੋਹ ਕਮਾਇ ॥
jeet jeet ajeet jodhan roh kroh kamaae |

They continued to conquer furiously the invincible warriors, swinging the canopies over the heads of one another

ਝੂਠ ਸਾਚ ਅਨੰਤ ਬੋਲਿ ਕਲੋਲ ਕੇਲ ਅਨੇਕ ॥
jhootth saach anant bol kalol kel anek |

By telling endless kinds of lies and truths, they continued to do many pranks and games.

ਅੰਤਿ ਕਾਲ ਸਬੈ ਭਛੇ ਜਗਿ ਛਾਡੀਆ ਨਹਿ ਏਕ ॥੫੬॥
ant kaal sabai bhachhe jag chhaaddeea neh ek |56|

Garrying on behavior conquer furiously the invincible warriors, Swinging the canopies over the ultimately became the food of KAL ( death).56.

ਆਪ ਅਰਥ ਅਨਰਥ ਅਪਰਥ ਸਮਰਥ ਕਰਤ ਅਨੰਤ ॥
aap arath anarath aparath samarath karat anant |

For their own selfishness, powerful people have been doing endless harm to others.

ਅੰਤਿ ਹੋਤ ਠਟੀ ਕਛੂ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਕੋਟਿ ਕ੍ਯੋਨ ਨ ਕਰੰਤ ॥
ant hot tthattee kachhoo prabhoo kott kayon na karant |

The powerful people perform many sinful action and unjust deeds, for their interest, but ultimately they have to appear before the Lord

ਜਾਨ ਬੂਝ ਪਰੰਤ ਕੂਪ ਲਹੰਤ ਮੂੜ ਨ ਭੇਵ ॥
jaan boojh parant koop lahant moorr na bhev |

The being deliberately falls into the well and dose not know the secret of the Lord

ਅੰਤਿ ਕਾਲ ਤਬੈ ਬਚੈ ਜਬ ਜਾਨ ਹੈ ਗੁਰਦੇਵ ॥੫੭॥
ant kaal tabai bachai jab jaan hai guradev |57|

He will only save himself from death, when he will comprehend that Guru-Lord.57.

ਅੰਤਿ ਹੋਤ ਠਟੀ ਭਲੀ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਮੂੜ ਲੋਗ ਨ ਜਾਨਿ ॥
ant hot tthattee bhalee prabh moorr log na jaan |

The fools do not know that ultimately we feet shy before the Lord

ਆਪ ਅਰਥ ਪਛਾਨ ਹੀ ਤਜਿ ਦੀਹ ਦੇਵ ਨਿਧਾਨ ॥
aap arath pachhaan hee taj deeh dev nidhaan |

These fools forsaking their supreme father, the Lord, only recognize their own interest

ਧਰਮ ਜਾਨਿ ਕਰਤ ਪਾਪਨ ਯੌ ਨ ਜਾਨਤ ਮੂੜ ॥
dharam jaan karat paapan yau na jaanat moorr |

Those fools thus, not knowing (the reality), mistaking (hypocrites) for religion, commit sin.

ਸਰਬ ਕਾਲ ਦਇਆਲ ਕੋ ਕਹੁ ਪ੍ਰਯੋਗ ਗੂੜ ਅਗੂੜ ॥੫੮॥
sarab kaal deaal ko kahu prayog goorr agoorr |58|

They commit sins in the name of religion and they do not know even this much that this is the profound myself of the compassionate of the Name of the Lord.58

ਪਾਪ ਪੁੰਨ ਪਛਾਨ ਹੀ ਕਰਿ ਪੁੰਨ ਕੀ ਸਮ ਪਾਪ ॥
paap pun pachhaan hee kar pun kee sam paap |

(They) recognize sin as virtue, and commit sin as virtue.

ਪਰਮ ਜਾਨ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਜਾਪਨ ਜਪੈ ਲਾਗ ਕੁਜਾਪ ॥
param jaan pavitr jaapan japai laag kujaap |

They are ever absorbed in evil action considering sin as virtue and virtue as sin, the holy as unholy and without knowing the remembrance of the Name of the Lord:

ਸਿਧ ਠਉਰ ਨ ਮਾਨਹੀ ਬਿਨੁ ਸਿਧ ਠਉਰ ਪੂਜੰਤ ॥
sidh tthaur na maanahee bin sidh tthaur poojant |

The being does not believe in the good place and worship bad place

ਹਾਥਿ ਦੀਪਕੁ ਲੈ ਮਹਾ ਪਸੁ ਮਧਿ ਕੂਪ ਪਰੰਤ ॥੫੯॥
haath deepak lai mahaa pas madh koop parant |59|

In such a position he falls in the well, even having the lamp in his hand.59.

ਸਿਧ ਠਉਰ ਨ ਮਾਨ ਹੀ ਅਨਸਿਧ ਪੂਜਤ ਠਉਰ ॥
sidh tthaur na maan hee anasidh poojat tthaur |

Having on belief in holy places, he worship the unholy ones

ਕੈ ਕੁ ਦਿਵਸ ਚਲਾਹਿਗੇ ਜੜ ਭੀਤ ਕੀ ਸੀ ਦਉਰ ॥
kai ku divas chalaahige jarr bheet kee see daur |

But for now many days he will be able to run such a cowardly race ?

ਪੰਖ ਹੀਨ ਕਹਾ ਉਡਾਇਬ ਨੈਨ ਹੀਨ ਨਿਹਾਰ ॥
pankh heen kahaa uddaaeib nain heen nihaar |

Hoe can one fly without the wings? And how can one see without the eyes? How can one go to the battlefield without weapons

ਸਸਤ੍ਰ ਹੀਨ ਜੁਧਾ ਨ ਪੈਠਬ ਅਰਥ ਹੀਨ ਬਿਚਾਰ ॥੬੦॥
sasatr heen judhaa na paitthab arath heen bichaar |60|

And without understaning the meaning how can one understand any problem?.60.

ਦਰਬ ਹੀਣ ਬਪਾਰ ਜੈਸਕ ਅਰਥ ਬਿਨੁ ਇਸ ਲੋਕ ॥
darab heen bapaar jaisak arath bin is lok |

In this people, the trade of a person deprived of Darb (money) cannot be done without money ('meaning').

ਆਂਖ ਹੀਣ ਬਿਲੋਕਬੋ ਜਗਿ ਕਾਮਕੇਲ ਅਕੋਕ ॥
aankh heen bilokabo jag kaamakel akok |

How can one indulge in trade without wealth? How can one visualise the lustful actions without eyes?

ਗਿਆਨ ਹੀਣ ਸੁ ਪਾਠ ਗੀਤਾ ਬੁਧਿ ਹੀਣ ਬਿਚਾਰ ॥
giaan heen su paatth geetaa budh heen bichaar |

Gita is devoid of knowledge and cannot be read without wisdom.

ਹਿੰਮਤ ਹੀਨ ਜੁਧਾਨ ਜੂਝਬ ਕੇਲ ਹੀਣ ਕੁਮਾਰ ॥੬੧॥
hinmat heen judhaan joojhab kel heen kumaar |61|

How can one recite Gita without knowledge and reflect upon it without intellect? How can one go to the battlefield without counrage.61

ਕਉਨ ਕਉਨ ਗਨਾਈਐ ਜੇ ਭਏ ਭੂਮਿ ਮਹੀਪ ॥
kaun kaun ganaaeeai je bhe bhoom maheep |

Let us count the kings who have been on earth.

ਕਉਨ ਕਉਨ ਸੁ ਕਥੀਐ ਜਗਿ ਕੇ ਸੁ ਦ੍ਵੀਪ ਅਦ੍ਵੀਪ ॥
kaun kaun su katheeai jag ke su dveep adveep |

How many kings were there? To want extent they be enumerated, and how far should the continents and regions of the world be described?

ਜਾਸੁ ਕੀਨ ਗਨੈ ਵਹੈ ਇਮਿ ਔਰ ਕੀ ਨਹਿ ਸਕਤਿ ॥
jaas keen ganai vahai im aauar kee neh sakat |

He who (the Lord) has created can count them, no one else has power.

ਯੌ ਨ ਐਸ ਪਹਚਾਨੀਐ ਬਿਨੁ ਤਾਸੁ ਕੀ ਕੀਏ ਭਗਤਿ ॥੬੨॥
yau na aais pahachaaneeai bin taas kee kee bhagat |62|

I have enumerated, only those which have come within my sight, I am unable to enumerate more and the this is also not possible without His devotion.62.

ਇਤਿ ਰਾਜਾ ਭਰਥ ਰਾਜ ਸਮਾਪਤੰ ॥੩॥੫॥
eit raajaa bharath raaj samaapatan |3|5|

End of King Bharata's reign here.

ਅਥ ਰਾਜਾ ਸਗਰ ਰਾਜ ਕਥਨੰ ॥
ath raajaa sagar raaj kathanan |

Now the narration of King Sagar's reign:

ਰੂਆਲ ਛੰਦ ॥

ROOAAL STANZA

ਸ੍ਰੇਸਟ ਸ੍ਰੇਸਟ ਭਏ ਜਿਤੇ ਇਹ ਭੂਮਿ ਆਨਿ ਨਰੇਸ ॥
sresatt sresatt bhe jite ih bhoom aan nares |

As many great kings as there have been on this earth,

ਤਉਨ ਤਉਨ ਉਚਾਰਹੋ ਤੁਮਰੇ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ਅਸੇਸ ॥
taun taun uchaaraho tumare prasaad ases |

All the superb kings who had ruled over the earth, O Lord! With thy Grace, I describe at of them

ਭਰਥ ਰਾਜ ਬਿਤੀਤ ਭੇ ਭਏ ਰਾਜਾ ਸਗਰ ਰਾਜ ॥
bharath raaj biteet bhe bhe raajaa sagar raaj |

Bharata's reign ended and King Sagara reigned.

ਰੁਦ੍ਰ ਕੀ ਤਪਸਾ ਕਰੀ ਲੀਅ ਲਛ ਸੁਤ ਉਪਰਾਜਿ ॥੬੩॥
rudr kee tapasaa karee leea lachh sut uparaaj |63|

There was king sagar after Bharat, who meditated on Rudra and performed austerities, he obtained the boon of one lakh sons.63.

ਚਕ੍ਰ ਬਕ੍ਰ ਧੁਜਾ ਗਦਾ ਭ੍ਰਿਤ ਸਰਬ ਰਾਜ ਕੁਮਾਰ ॥
chakr bakr dhujaa gadaa bhrit sarab raaj kumaar |

All the Rajkumaras (hold) crooked wheels, dhujas, maces and sevaks.

ਲਛ ਰੂਪ ਧਰੇ ਮਨੋ ਜਗਿ ਆਨਿ ਮੈਨ ਸੁ ਧਾਰ ॥
lachh roop dhare mano jag aan main su dhaar |

They were princes of discus, banners and maces and it seemed that the god of love had manifested himself in lakhs of forms

ਬੇਖ ਬੇਖ ਬਨੇ ਨਰੇਸ੍ਵਰ ਜੀਤਿ ਦੇਸ ਅਸੇਸ ॥
bekh bekh bane naresvar jeet des ases |

The Raj Kumaras have worn various types of (bane) and conquered countless countries.

ਦਾਸ ਭਾਵ ਸਬੈ ਧਰੇ ਮਨਿ ਜਤ੍ਰ ਤਤ੍ਰ ਨਰੇਸ ॥੬੪॥
daas bhaav sabai dhare man jatr tatr nares |64|

They conquered various countries and became kings considering them sovereigns became their servants.64.

ਬਾਜ ਮੇਧ ਕਰੈ ਲਗੈ ਹਯਸਾਲਿ ਤੇ ਹਯ ਚੀਨਿ ॥
baaj medh karai lagai hayasaal te hay cheen |

They selected a fine horse from their stable and decided to perform Ashvamedha Yajna

ਬੋਲਿ ਬੋਲਿ ਅਮੋਲ ਰਿਤੁਜ ਮੰਤ੍ਰ ਮਿਤ੍ਰ ਪ੍ਰਬੀਨ ॥
bol bol amol rituj mantr mitr prabeen |

They invited the ministers, friends and Brahmins

ਸੰਗ ਦੀਨ ਸਮੂਹ ਸੈਨ ਬ੍ਰਯੂਹ ਬ੍ਰਯੂਹ ਬਨਾਇ ॥
sang deen samooh sain brayooh brayooh banaae |

Forming (separate) groups, all of them (on horseback) went with the army.

ਜਤ੍ਰ ਤਤ੍ਰ ਫਿਰੈ ਲਗੇ ਸਿਰਿ ਅਤ੍ਰ ਪਤ੍ਰ ਫਿਰਾਇ ॥੬੫॥
jatr tatr firai lage sir atr patr firaae |65|

After that they gave groups of their forces to their ministers, who moved here and there, swinging the canopies over their heada.65.

ਜੈਤਪਤ੍ਰ ਲਹ੍ਯੋ ਜਹਾ ਤਹ ਸਤ੍ਰੁ ਭੇ ਸਭ ਚੂਰ ॥
jaitapatr lahayo jahaa tah satru bhe sabh choor |

They obtained letter of victory from all the places and all their enemies were smashed

ਛੋਰਿ ਛੋਰਿ ਭਜੇ ਨਰੇਸ੍ਵਰ ਛਾਡਿ ਸਸਤ੍ਰ ਕਰੂਰ ॥
chhor chhor bhaje naresvar chhaadd sasatr karoor |

All the such kings ran away, forsaking their weapons

ਡਾਰਿ ਡਾਰਿ ਸਨਾਹਿ ਸੂਰ ਤ੍ਰੀਆਨ ਭੇਸ ਸੁ ਧਾਰਿ ॥
ddaar ddaar sanaeh soor treeaan bhes su dhaar |

The warriors took off their armor and disguised themselves as women.

ਭਾਜਿ ਭਾਜਿ ਚਲੇ ਜਹਾ ਤਹ ਪੁਤ੍ਰ ਮਿਤ੍ਰ ਬਿਸਾਰਿ ॥੬੬॥
bhaaj bhaaj chale jahaa tah putr mitr bisaar |66|

These warriors, putting off their armours, assuming the guise of women and forgetting their sons and friends, ran away here and there.66.

ਗਾਜਿ ਗਾਜਿ ਗਜੇ ਗਦਾਧਰਿ ਭਾਜਿ ਭਾਜਿ ਸੁ ਭੀਰ ॥
gaaj gaaj gaje gadaadhar bhaaj bhaaj su bheer |

The mace-wielders thundered and the cowards fled away

ਸਾਜ ਬਾਜ ਤਜੈ ਭਜੈ ਬਿਸੰਭਾਰ ਬੀਰ ਸੁਧੀਰ ॥
saaj baaj tajai bhajai bisanbhaar beer sudheer |

Many warriors leaving their paraphernalia ran away

ਸੂਰਬੀਰ ਗਜੇ ਜਹਾ ਤਹ ਅਸਤ੍ਰ ਸਸਤ੍ਰ ਨਚਾਇ ॥
soorabeer gaje jahaa tah asatr sasatr nachaae |

Where warriors roar and weapons dance.

ਜੀਤਿ ਜੀਤਿ ਲਏ ਸੁ ਦੇਸਨ ਜੈਤਪਤ੍ਰ ਫਿਰਾਇ ॥੬੭॥
jeet jeet le su desan jaitapatr firaae |67|

Wherever there brave warriors thundered, activating their arms and weapons, they obtained victory and got the letter of conquest.67.

ਜੀਤਿ ਪੂਰਬ ਪਛਿਮੈ ਅਰੁ ਲੀਨ ਦਛਨਿ ਜਾਇ ॥
jeet poorab pachhimai ar leen dachhan jaae |

Having conquered the east and the west, he went to the south and subdued it.

ਤਾਕਿ ਬਾਜ ਚਲ੍ਯੋ ਤਹਾ ਜਹ ਬੈਠਿ ਥੇ ਮੁਨਿ ਰਾਇ ॥
taak baaj chalayo tahaa jah baitth the mun raae |

They conquered the East, West and south and now the horse reached there where the grate sage Kapila was sitting

ਧ੍ਰਯਾਨ ਮਧਿ ਹੁਤੇ ਮਹਾ ਮੁਨਿ ਸਾਜ ਬਾਜ ਨ ਦੇਖਿ ॥
dhrayaan madh hute mahaa mun saaj baaj na dekh |

Mahamuni was absorbed in meditation, (therefore) did not see the blessed horse.

ਪ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਪਛ ਖਰੋ ਭਯੋ ਰਿਖਿ ਜਾਨਿ ਗੋਰਖ ਭੇਖ ॥੬੮॥
prisatt pachh kharo bhayo rikh jaan gorakh bhekh |68|

He was absorbed in meditation, he did not see the home, which seeing him in the guise of Gorakh, stood behind him.68.

ਚਉਕ ਚਿਤ ਰਹੇ ਸਬੈ ਜਬ ਦੇਖਿ ਨੈਨ ਨ ਬਾਜ ॥
chauk chit rahe sabai jab dekh nain na baaj |

When all the warriors did not see the horse, they were wonderstruks

ਖੋਜਿ ਖੋਜਿ ਥਕੇ ਸਬੈ ਦਿਸ ਚਾਰਿ ਚਾਰਿ ਸਲਾਜ ॥
khoj khoj thake sabai dis chaar chaar salaaj |

And in their shame, began to search for the horse in all the four direction

ਜਾਨਿ ਪਯਾਰ ਗਯੋ ਤੁਰੰਗਮ ਕੀਨ ਚਿਤਿ ਬਿਚਾਰ ॥
jaan payaar gayo turangam keen chit bichaar |

Then (they) contemplated in Chit that the horse had gone to the underworld.

ਸਗਰ ਖਾਤ ਖੁਦੈ ਲਗੇ ਰਣਧੀਰ ਬੀਰ ਅਪਾਰ ॥੬੯॥
sagar khaat khudai lage ranadheer beer apaar |69|

Thinking this that the horse had gone to the nether-world, they tried to enter that world by digging a comprehensive pit.69.

ਖੋਦਿ ਖੋਦਿ ਅਖੋਦਿ ਪ੍ਰਿਥਵੀ ਕ੍ਰੋਧ ਜੋਧ ਅਨੰਤ ॥
khod khod akhod prithavee krodh jodh anant |

Enraged, endless warriors were ripping the earth that could not be dug up.

ਭਛਿ ਭਛਿ ਗਏ ਸਬੈ ਮੁਖ ਮ੍ਰਿਤਕਾ ਦੁਤਿ ਵੰਤ ॥
bhachh bhachh ge sabai mukh mritakaa dut vant |

The furious warriors began to dig the earth and the brightness of their faces became earth like

ਸਗਰ ਖਾਤ ਖੁਦੈ ਲਗੇ ਦਿਸ ਖੋਦ ਦਛਨ ਸਰਬ ॥
sagar khaat khudai lage dis khod dachhan sarab |

When the whole south direction was dug up

ਜੀਤਿ ਪੂਰਬ ਕੋ ਚਲੇ ਅਤਿ ਠਾਨ ਕੈ ਜੀਅ ਗਰਬ ॥੭੦॥
jeet poorab ko chale at tthaan kai jeea garab |70|

In this way when they made the whole of the South an abyss, then they conquering it advanced towards the East.70.

ਖੋਦ ਦਛਨ ਕੀ ਦਿਸਾ ਪੁਨਿ ਖੋਦ ਪੂਰਬ ਦਿਸਾਨ ॥
khod dachhan kee disaa pun khod poorab disaan |

By digging (discovered) the south direction

ਤਾਕਿ ਪਛਮ ਕੋ ਚਲੇ ਦਸ ਚਾਰਿ ਚਾਰਿ ਨਿਧਾਨ ॥
taak pachham ko chale das chaar chaar nidhaan |

After digging the south and the east, those warriors, who were experts in all the sciences, fell upon the west

ਪੈਠਿ ਉਤਰ ਦਿਸਾ ਜਬੈ ਖੋਦੈ ਲਗੇ ਸਭ ਠਉਰ ॥
paitth utar disaa jabai khodai lage sabh tthaur |

By entering in the north direction, when the whole place starts digging

ਅਉਰ ਅਉਰ ਠਟੈ ਪਸੂ ਕਲਿ ਕਾਲਿ ਠਾਟੀ ਅਉਰ ॥੭੧॥
aaur aaur tthattai pasoo kal kaal tthaattee aaur |71|

When, advancing towards the north, they began to dig the earth, they were thinking sometime else in their minds, but the Lord had thought otherwise.71.
