ਸਵੈਯਾ ॥

SWAYYA

ਮੂਸਲ ਲੈ ਮੁਸਲੀ ਕਰ ਮੈ ਅਰਿ ਕੋ ਪਲ ਮੈ ਦਲ ਪੁੰਜ ਹਰਿਓ ਹੈ ॥

Balram taking his mace in his hand, killed a group of enemies in an instant

ਬੀਰ ਪਰੇ ਧਰਨੀ ਪਰ ਘਾਇਲ ਸ੍ਰਉਨਤ ਸਿਉ ਤਨ ਤਾਹਿ ਭਰਿਓ ਹੈ ॥

The warriors with blood-saturated bodies, are lying wounded on the earth

ਤਾ ਛਬਿ ਕੋ ਜਸੁ ਉਚ ਮਹਾ ਮਨ ਬੀਚ ਬਿਚਾਰ ਕੈ ਸ੍ਯਾਮ ਕਰਿਓ ਹੈ ॥

The poet Shyam, while describing that spectacle says that it appears to him

ਮਾਨਹੁ ਦੇਖਨ ਕਉ ਰਨ ਕਉਤੁਕ ਕ੍ਰੋਧ ਭਿਆਨਕ ਰੂਪ ਧਰਿਓ ਹੈ ॥੧੭੬੬॥

That the ‘anger’ had manifested himself apparently in order to see the war-scenes.1766.

ਇਤ ਓਰ ਹਲਾਯੁਧ ਜੁਧੁ ਕਰੈ ਉਤ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਗਰੜਧੁਜ ਕੋਪ ਭਰਿਓ ਹੈ ॥

On this side Balram is engged in fighting and on that side Krishna is getting filled with rage

ਸਸਤ੍ਰ ਸੰਭਾਰਿ ਮੁਰਾਰਿ ਤਬੈ ਅਰਿ ਸੈਨ ਕੇ ਭੀਤਰ ਜਾਇ ਅਰਿਓ ਹੈ ॥

Taking up his weapons, he is resisting the enemy’s army,

ਮਾਰਿ ਬਿਦਾਰ ਦਏ ਦਲ ਕਉ ਰਨ ਯਾ ਬਿਧਿ ਚਿਤ੍ਰ ਬਚਿਤ੍ਰ ਕਰਿਓ ਹੈ ॥

And killing the army of the enemy, he has created a queer scene

ਬਾਜ ਪੈ ਬਾਜ ਰਥੀ ਰਥ ਪੈ ਗਜ ਪੈ ਗਜ ਸ੍ਵਾਰ ਪੈ ਸ੍ਵਾਰ ਪਰਿਓ ਹੈ ॥੧੭੬੭॥

The horse is seen lying on the horse, the chariot-rider on the chariot-rider, elephant upon the elephant and the rider on the rider.1767.

ਏਕ ਕਟੇ ਅਧ ਬੀਚਹੁੰ ਤੇ ਭਟ ਏਕਨ ਕੇ ਸਿਰ ਕਾਟਿ ਗਿਰਾਏ ॥

Some warriors is cut into two halves, the heads of many warriors have been chopped and thrown

ਏਕ ਕੀਏ ਬਿਰਥੀ ਤਬ ਹੀ ਗਿਰ ਭੂਮਿ ਪਰੇ ਸੰਗਿ ਬਾਨਨ ਘਾਏ ॥

Many are lying wounded on the earth, being deprived of their chariots

ਏਕ ਕੀਏ ਕਰ ਹੀਨ ਬਲੀ ਪਗ ਹੀਨ ਕਿਤੇ ਗਨਤੀ ਨਹਿ ਆਏ ॥

Many people have lost their hands and many their feet

ਸ੍ਯਾਮ ਭਨੈ ਕਿਨਹੂੰ ਨਹੀ ਧੀਰ ਧਰਿਓ ਤਬ ਹੀ ਰਨ ਛਾਡਿ ਪਰਾਏ ॥੧੭੬੮॥

They can’t be enumerated, the poet says that all have lost their endurance and all have run away from the war-arena.1768.

ਜਾ ਦਲ ਜੀਤ ਲਯੋ ਸਿਗਰੇ ਜਗੁ ਅਉਰ ਕਹੂੰ ਰਨ ਤੇ ਨਹੀ ਹਾਰਿਓ ॥

The army of the enemy, which had conquered the whole world and was never defeated

ਇੰਦ੍ਰ ਸੇ ਭੂਪ ਅਨੇਕ ਮਿਲੇ ਤਿਨ ਤੇ ਕਬਹੂੰ ਨਹੀ ਜਾ ਪਗੁ ਟਾਰਿਓ ॥

This army had fought against it in unison

ਸੋ ਘਨਿ ਸ੍ਯਾਮ ਭਜਾਇ ਦੀਯੋ ਪਲ ਮੈ ਨ ਕਿਨੂੰ ਧਨੁ ਬਾਨ ਸੰਭਾਰਿਓ ॥

The same army has been caused to flee by Krishna in an instant and none could even take up his bow and arrows

ਦੇਵ ਅਦੇਵ ਕਰੈ ਉਪਮਾ ਇਮ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਜਦੁਬੀਰ ਬਡੋ ਰਨ ਪਾਰਿਓ ॥੧੭੬੯॥

The gods and demons both are appreciating the war of Krishna.1769.

ਦੋਹਰਾ ॥

DOHRA

ਦ੍ਵੈ ਅਛੂਹਨੀ ਸੈਨ ਰਨਿ ਦਈ ਸ੍ਯਾਮ ਜਬ ਘਾਇ ॥

ਮੰਤ੍ਰੀ ਸੁਮਤਿ ਸਮੇਤ ਦਲੁ ਕੋਪ ਪਰਿਓ ਅਰਰਾਇ ॥੧੭੭੦॥

When Krishna destroyed two extremely large military units, then the minister Sumati, challenging in anger, fell upon him.1770.

ਸਵੈਯਾ ॥

SWAYYA

ਧਾਇ ਪਰੇ ਕਰਿ ਕੋਪ ਤਬੈ ਭਟ ਦੈ ਮੁਖ ਢਾਲ ਲਏ ਕਰਵਾਰੈ ॥

ਸਾਮੁਹੇ ਆਇ ਹਠੀ ਹਠਿ ਸਿਉ ਘਨਿ ਸ੍ਯਾਮ ਕਹਾ ਇਹ ਭਾਤਿ ਹਕਾਰੈ ॥

The warriors getting enraged, taking up the swords and shields in their hands fell upon Krishna, who challenged them and they persistently came in front of him

ਮੂਸਲ ਚਕ੍ਰ ਗਦਾ ਗਹਿ ਕੈ ਸੁ ਹਤੈ ਹਰਿ ਕੌਚ ਉਠੈ ਚਿਨਗਾਰੈ ॥

On this side, Krishna, catching hold of his club, discus, mace etc. in his hands, struck terrible blows and the sparks emanated from the armours

ਮਾਨੋ ਲੁਹਾਰ ਲੀਏ ਘਨ ਹਾਥਨ ਲੋਹ ਕਰੇਰੇ ਕੋ ਕਾਮ ਸਵਾਰੈ ॥੧੭੭੧॥

It appeared that an ironsmith was fashioning according to his desire the iron by the strokes of his hammer.1771

ਤਉ ਲਗ ਹੀ ਬਰਮਾਕ੍ਰਿਤ ਊਧਵ ਆਏ ਹੈ ਸ੍ਯਾਮ ਸਹਾਇ ਕੇ ਕਾਰਨ ॥

Till that time, Kratvarma and Uddhava reached for the help of Krishna

ਅਉਰ ਅਕ੍ਰੂਰ ਲਏ ਸੰਗ ਜਾਦਵ ਧਾਇ ਪਰਿਓ ਅਰ ਬੀਰ ਬਿਦਾਰਨ ॥

Akrur also taking the Yadava warriors with him fell upon the enemies in order to kill them

ਸਸਤ੍ਰ ਸੰਭਾਰਿ ਸਭੈ ਅਪੁਨੇ ਕਬਿ ਸ੍ਯਾਮ ਕਹੈ ਮੁਖ ਮਾਰਿ ਉਚਾਰਨ ॥

ਓਰ ਦੁਹੂੰ ਅਤਿ ਜੁਧੁ ਭਯੋ ਸੁ ਗਦਾ ਬਰਛੀ ਕਰਵਾਰਿ ਕਟਾਰਨ ॥੧੭੭੨॥

Holding their weapons and should “kill, kill”, a dreadful war was waged from both sides with maces, lances swords, daggers etc.1772.

ਆਵਤ ਹੀ ਬਰਮਾਕ੍ਰਿਤ ਜੂ ਅਰਿ ਸੈਨਹੁ ਤੇ ਸੁ ਘਨੇ ਭਟ ਕੂਟੇ ॥

Kratvarma on coming chopped down many warriors

ਏਕ ਪਰੇ ਬਿਬ ਖੰਡ ਤਹੀ ਅਰਿ ਏਕ ਗਿਰੇ ਧਰ ਪੈ ਸਿਰ ਫੂਟੇ ॥

Someone has been cut into two parts and someone’s head has been cut down

ਏਕ ਮਹਾ ਬਲਵਾਨ ਕਮਾਨਨ ਤਾਨਿ ਚਲਾਵਤ ਇਉ ਸਰ ਛੂਟੇ ॥

From the bows of several powerful warriors the arrows are being discharged in this way

ਕਾਜ ਬਸੇਰੇ ਕੇ ਰੈਨ ਸਮੇ ਮਧਿਆਨ ਮਨੋ ਤਰੁ ਪੈ ਖਗ ਟੂਟੇ ॥੧੭੭੩॥

That it seems the birds are flying groups towards the trees for rest in the evening before the night falls.1773.

ਏਕ ਕਬੰਧ ਲੀਏ ਕਰਵਾਰਿ ਫਿਰੈ ਰਨ ਭੂਮਿ ਕੇ ਭੀਤਰ ਡੋਲਤ ॥

Somewhere the headless trunks are roaming in the battlefield taking the swords in their hands and

ਧਾਇ ਪਰੈ ਤਿਹ ਓਰ ਬਲੀ ਭਟ ਜੋ ਤਿਹ ਕੋ ਲਲਕਾਰ ਕੈ ਬੋਲਤ ॥

Whosoever challenging in the field, the warriors fall upon him

ਏਕ ਪਰੇ ਗਿਰ ਪਾਇ ਕਟੇ ਉਠਬੇ ਕਹੁ ਬਾਹਨ ਕੋ ਬਲੁ ਤੋਲਤ ॥

Someone has fallen because his foot has been cut and for getting up, he is taking the support of the vehicle and s

ਏਕ ਕਟੀ ਭੁਜ ਯੌ ਤਰਫੈ ਜਲ ਹੀਨ ਜਿਉ ਮੀਨ ਪਰਿਓ ਝਕਝੋਲਤ ॥੧੭੭੪॥

Omewhere the chopped arm is writhing like a fish out of water.1774.

ਏਕ ਕਬੰਧ ਬਿਨਾ ਹਥਿਆਰਨ ਰਾਮ ਕਹੈ ਰਨ ਮਧਿ ਦਉਰੈ ॥

The poet Ram says that some headless trunk is running in the battlefield without the weapon and

ਸੁੰਡਨ ਤੇ ਗਜ ਰਾਜਨ ਕੋ ਗਹਿ ਕੈ ਕਰਿ ਕੈ ਬਲ ਸੋ ਝਕਝੋਰੈ ॥

Catching hold of the trunks of the elephants, is shaking them violently with force

ਭੂਮਿ ਗਿਰੇ ਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਅਸ੍ਵਨ ਕੀ ਦੁਹੂੰ ਹਾਥਨ ਸੋ ਗਹਿ ਗ੍ਰੀਵ ਮਰੋਰੈ ॥

He is also pulling the neck of dead horses lying on the ground with both his hands and

ਸ੍ਯੰਦਨ ਕੇ ਅਸਵਾਰਨ ਕੇ ਸਿਰ ਏਕ ਚਪੇਟ ਹੀ ਕੇ ਸੰਗਿ ਤੋਰੈ ॥੧੭੭੫॥

Is trying to break the heads of the dead horse-riders with one slap.1775.

ਕੂਦਤ ਹੈ ਰਨ ਮੈ ਭਟ ਏਕ ਕੁਲਾਚਨ ਦੈ ਕਰਿ ਜੁਧੁ ਕਰੈ ॥

The warriors are fighting while continuously jumping and swinging in the battlefield

ਇਕ ਬਾਨ ਕਮਾਨ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾਨਨ ਤੇ ਕਬਿ ਰਾਮ ਕਹੈ ਨ ਰਤੀ ਕੁ ਡਰੈ ॥

They are not afraid even slightly form the bows, arrows and swords

ਇਕ ਕਾਇਰ ਤ੍ਰਾਸ ਬਢਾਇ ਚਿਤੈ ਰਨ ਭੂਮਿ ਹੂੰ ਤੇ ਤਜ ਸਸਤ੍ਰ ਟਰੈ ॥

Many cowards are relinquishing their weapons in the battlefield in fear coming back to the battlefield and

ਇਕ ਲਾਜ ਭਰੇ ਪੁਨਿ ਆਇ ਅਰੈ ਲਰਿ ਕੈ ਮਰ ਕੈ ਗਿਰਿ ਭੂਮਿ ਪਰੈ ॥੧੭੭੬॥

Fighting and falling dead on the ground.1776.

ਬ੍ਰਿਜਭੂਖਨ ਚਕ੍ਰ ਸੰਭਾਰਤ ਹੀ ਤਬ ਹੀ ਦਲੁ ਬੈਰਨ ਕੇ ਧਸਿ ਕੈ ॥

When Krishna held up his discus, the enemy forces became fearful

ਬਿਨੁ ਪ੍ਰਾਨ ਕੀਏ ਬਲਵਾਨ ਘਨੇ ਕਬਿ ਸ੍ਯਾਮ ਭਨੈ ਸੁ ਕਛੂ ਹਸਿ ਕੈ ॥

Krishna while smiling deprived many mightly onces of their life force

ਇਕ ਚੂਰਨ ਕੀਨ ਗਦਾ ਗਹਿ ਕੈ ਇਕ ਪਾਸ ਕੇ ਸੰਗ ਲੀਏ ਕਸਿ ਕੈ ॥
