ਜੋ ਹੁਤੀ ਜਗ ਅਰੁ ਬੇਦ ਰੀਤਿ ॥
jo hutee jag ar bed reet |

which was the ritual of Yagya and the ritual of the Vedas,

ਸੋ ਕਰੀ ਸਰਬ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਲਾਇ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ॥
so karee sarab nrip laae preet |

He performed all the Vedic traditions with devotion

ਭੂਆ ਦਾਨ ਦਾਨ ਰਤਨਾਦਿ ਆਦਿ ॥
bhooaa daan daan ratanaad aad |

By donating land and donating gems etc

ਤਿਨ ਭਾਤਿ ਭਾਤਿ ਲਿਨੇ ਸੁਵਾਦ ॥੧੬॥
tin bhaat bhaat line suvaad |16|

He also gave various types of charities concerning lands, jewels ect.16.

ਕਰਿ ਦੇਸ ਦੇਸ ਇਮਿ ਨੀਤਿ ਰਾਜ ॥
kar des des im neet raaj |

(Thus) established his politics from country to country

ਬਹੁ ਭਾਤਿ ਦਾਨ ਦੇ ਸਰਬ ਸਾਜ ॥
bahu bhaat daan de sarab saaj |

He promulgated his policies in all the countries, and donated gifts of various type

ਹਸਤਾਦਿ ਦਤ ਬਾਜਾਦਿ ਮੇਧ ॥
hasataad dat baajaad medh |

(That king) donated elephants etc

ਤੇ ਭਾਤਿ ਭਾਤਿ ਕਿਨੇ ਨ੍ਰਿਪੇਧ ॥੧੭॥
te bhaat bhaat kine nripedh |17|

He donated elephants ect. And performed various types of ashvamedha yajnas (horse-sacrifices). 17.

ਬਹੁ ਸਾਜ ਬਾਜ ਦਿਨੇ ਦਿਜਾਨ ॥
bahu saaj baaj dine dijaan |

(He) gave to the Brahmins many horses with instruments

ਦਸ ਚਾਰੁ ਚਾਰੁ ਬਿਦਿਆ ਸੁਜਾਨ ॥
das chaar chaar bidiaa sujaan |

He donated many decorated horses to those Brahmins, who had the knowledge of eighteen sciences, who were the reciters of six Shastr ect.

ਖਟ ਚਾਰ ਸਾਸਤ੍ਰ ਸਿੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਰਟੰਤ ॥
khatt chaar saasatr sinmrit rattant |

(who) recited the four Vedas, the six Shastras and the Smritis.

ਕੋਕਾਦਿ ਭੇਦ ਬੀਨਾ ਬਜੰਤ ॥੧੮॥
kokaad bhed beenaa bajant |18|

And also those who were skilful in playing various types of musical instruments.18.

ਘਨਸਾਰ ਘੋਰਿ ਘਸੀਅਤ ਗੁਲਾਬ ॥
ghanasaar ghor ghaseeat gulaab |

Camphor (kafur) was dissolved in rose (extract) and rubbed

ਮ੍ਰਿਗ ਮਦਿਤ ਡਾਰਿ ਚੂਵਤ ਸਰਾਬ ॥
mrig madit ddaar choovat saraab |

At that time the Sandal and roses were rubbed and the liquor of musk was prepared

ਕਸਮੀਰ ਘਾਸ ਘੋਰਤ ਸੁਬਾਸ ॥
kasameer ghaas ghorat subaas |

Saffron ('Kashmir Ghas') was ground for fragrance.

ਉਘਟਤ ਸੁਗੰਧ ਮਹਕੰਤ ਅਵਾਸ ॥੧੯॥
aughattat sugandh mahakant avaas |19|

During the reign of that king, the abodes of all the people gave out the fragrance of Kashmiri grass.19.

ਸੰਗੀਤ ਪਾਧਰੀ ਛੰਦ ॥
sangeet paadharee chhand |

SANGET PADRI STANZA

ਤਾਗੜਦੰ ਤਾਲ ਬਾਜਤ ਮੁਚੰਗ ॥
taagarradan taal baajat muchang |

Sieve, muchang, beena,

ਬੀਨਾ ਸੁ ਬੈਣ ਬੰਸੀ ਮ੍ਰਿਦੰਗ ॥
beenaa su bain bansee mridang |

The tunes of Iyer, drum etc. were heard

ਡਫ ਤਾਲ ਤੁਰੀ ਸਹਿਨਾਇ ਰਾਗ ॥
ddaf taal turee sahinaae raag |

The raga was created by playing the tambourine, kansiyas, turi, shehnai

ਬਾਜੰਤ ਜਾਨ ਉਪਨਤ ਸੁਹਾਗ ॥੨੦॥
baajant jaan upanat suhaag |20|

The pleasing sounds of tabors, clarions, clarionets ect. Were also heard.2o.

ਕਹੂੰ ਤਾਲ ਤੂਰ ਬੀਨਾ ਮ੍ਰਿਦੰਗ ॥
kahoon taal toor beenaa mridang |

Some chaine, tur, beena, mridang,

ਡਫ ਝਾਝ ਢੋਲ ਜਲਤਰ ਉਪੰਗ ॥
ddaf jhaajh dtol jalatar upang |

Somewhere there wes tune of drum, lyer etc. and somewhere the sound of tabor, anklet, drum,musical glasses ect. Was heard

ਜਹ ਜਹ ਬਿਲੋਕ ਤਹ ਤਹ ਸੁਬਾਸ ॥
jah jah bilok tah tah subaas |

Wherever you look, there is a fragrance.

ਉਠਤ ਸੁਗੰਧ ਮਹਕੰਤ ਅਵਾਸ ॥੨੧॥
autthat sugandh mahakant avaas |21|

There was feeling of fragrance everywhere and with this rising odour,all the abodes seemed fragrant.21.

ਹਰਿ ਬੋਲ ਮਨਾ ਛੰਦ ॥
har bol manaa chhand |

HARIBOLMANA STANZA

ਮਨੁ ਰਾਜ ਕਰ੍ਯੋ ॥
man raaj karayo |

(Such as) King Manu reigned

ਦੁਖ ਦੇਸ ਹਰ੍ਯੋ ॥
dukh des harayo |

And took away the sorrow of the country.

ਬਹੁ ਸਾਜ ਸਜੇ ॥
bahu saaj saje |

(In the country) many things were decorated

ਸੁਨਿ ਦੇਵ ਲਜੇ ॥੨੨॥
sun dev laje |22|

When manu ruled, he removed the suffering of the people and he was so good that even the gods felt shy after listening to his approbation.22.

ਇਤਿ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਬਚਿਤ੍ਰ ਨਾਟਕੇ ਮਨੁ ਰਾਜਾ ਕੋ ਰਾਜ ਸਮਾਪਤੰ ॥੧॥੫॥
eit sree bachitr naattake man raajaa ko raaj samaapatan |1|5|

End of the description of the rule of king Manu in Bachitar Natak.

ਅਥ ਪ੍ਰਿਥੁ ਰਾਜਾ ਕੋ ਰਾਜ ਕਥਨੰ ॥
ath prith raajaa ko raaj kathanan |

Now begins the description of the rule of king Prithu.

TOTAK STANZA

ਕਹੰ ਲਾਗ ਗਨੋ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਜੌਨ ਭਏ ॥
kahan laag gano nrip jauan bhe |

As many kings as there were, how far should I count them?

ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਜੋਤਹਿ ਜੋਤਿ ਮਿਲਾਇ ਲਏ ॥
prabh joteh jot milaae le |

How many kings were there and how many of them were merged by the Lord in his light? To what extent should I describe them.

ਪੁਨਿ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਪ੍ਰਿਥਰਾਜ ਪ੍ਰਿਥੀਸ ਭਯੋ ॥
pun sree pritharaaj prithees bhayo |

Then Prithvi became king of Prithvi,

ਜਿਨਿ ਬਿਪਨ ਦਾਨ ਦੁਰੰਤ ਦਯੋ ॥੨੩॥
jin bipan daan durant dayo |23|

Then there was Prithu, the Lord of the earth, who donated enormous gifts to the Brahmins.23.

ਦਲੁ ਲੈ ਦਿਨ ਏਕ ਸਿਕਾਰ ਚੜੇ ॥
dal lai din ek sikaar charre |

(The king) went hunting one day with an army

ਬਨਿ ਨਿਰਜਨ ਮੋ ਲਖਿ ਬਾਘ ਬੜੇ ॥
ban nirajan mo lakh baagh barre |

One day, in a desolate forest, seeing huge lions, he went hunting, along with his army, in order to attack them

ਤਹ ਨਾਰਿ ਸੁਕੁੰਤਲ ਤੇਜ ਧਰੇ ॥
tah naar sukuntal tej dhare |

There, a woman named Shakuntala was wearing Tej (beauty).

ਸਸਿ ਸੂਰਜ ਕੀ ਲਖਿ ਕ੍ਰਾਤਿ ਹਰੇ ॥੨੪॥
sas sooraj kee lakh kraat hare |24|

There a women named Shakuntala, whose light bedimmed even the luster of the sun.24.

ਹਰਿ ਬੋਲ ਮਨਾ ਛੰਦ ॥
har bol manaa chhand |

HARIBOLMANA STANZA

ਤਹ ਜਾਤ ਭਏ ॥
tah jaat bhe |

(The king) went there.

ਮ੍ਰਿਗ ਘਾਤ ਕਏ ॥
mrig ghaat ke |

Hunted deer.

ਇਕ ਦੇਖਿ ਕੁਟੀ ॥
eik dekh kuttee |

(There) saw a little girl,

ਜਨੁ ਜੋਗ ਜੁਟੀ ॥੨੫॥
jan jog juttee |25|

After killing a deer and seeing a desolate cottage, the king reached there.25.

ਤਹ ਜਾਤ ਭਯੋ ॥
tah jaat bhayo |

(The king) went into that (hut).

ਸੰਗ ਕੋ ਨ ਲਯੋ ॥
sang ko na layo |

Don't take anyone with you.
