ਦੋਹਰਾ ॥

ਮੇਵਾ ਸਾਹੁਨਿ ਸਾਹੁ ਲੈ ਤਿਹ ਸਫ ਭੀਤਰਿ ਡਾਰਿ ॥
mevaa saahun saahu lai tih saf bheetar ddaar |Taking the fruit, the trader threw it to the sack and the woman said,
ਖਾਹਿ ਨ੍ਰਿਪਤਿ ਤੂ ਭਛ ਸੁਭ ਐਸੇ ਕਹਿਯੋ ਸੁਧਾਰਿ ॥੧੨॥
khaeh nripat too bhachh subh aaise kahiyo sudhaar |12|‘O my Raja eat it to your satisfaction.’(12)
ਸੁਨਤ ਸਾਹੁ ਚਮਕ੍ਯੋ ਬਚਨ ਤ੍ਰਿਯ ਕੌ ਕਹਿਯੋ ਰਿਸਾਇ ॥
sunat saahu chamakayo bachan triy kau kahiyo risaae |The trader flew into rage and asked the lady, ‘Why have you called me a Raja?
ਤੈ ਮੁਹਿ ਕ੍ਯੋ ਰਾਜਾ ਕਹਿਯੋ ਮੋ ਕਹੁ ਬਾਤ ਬਤਾਇ ॥੧੩॥
tai muhi kayo raajaa kahiyo mo kahu baat bataae |13|‘Disclose the reason behind this.’(13)
ਧਾਮ ਰਹਤ ਤੋਰੇ ਸੁਖੀ ਤੋ ਸੌ ਨੇਹੁ ਬਢਾਇ ॥
dhaam rahat tore sukhee to sau nehu badtaae |The woman said, ‘I live in your house. I love you and that is why
ਤਾ ਤੇ ਮੈ ਰਾਜਾ ਕਹਿਯੋ ਮੇਰੇ ਤੁਮ ਹੀ ਰਾਇ ॥੧੪॥
taa te mai raajaa kahiyo mere tum hee raae |14|I called you a Raja. You are my Raja.’(14)
ਰੀਝ ਗਯੋ ਜੜ ਬਾਤ ਸੁਨਿ ਭੇਦ ਨ ਸਕਿਯੋ ਪਛਾਨਿ ॥
reejh gayo jarr baat sun bhed na sakiyo pachhaan |The fool was satisfied without knowing the reason, became the
ਤੁਰਤਿ ਗਯੋ ਹਾਟੈ ਸੁ ਉਠਿ ਅਧਿਕ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਮਨ ਮਾਨਿ ॥੧੫॥
turat gayo haattai su utth adhik preet man maan |15|Embodiment of love and left for his business.(15)
ਸਾਹੁ ਗਏ ਤ੍ਰਿਯ ਸਾਹ ਕੀ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਕੋ ਦਯੋ ਨਿਕਾਰਿ ॥
saahu ge triy saah kee nrip ko dayo nikaar |Soon after, she facilitated the Raja to come out.
ਸੁਨਤ ਬਾਤ ਅਤਿ ਕੋਪ ਕੈ ਅਧਿਕ ਲੌਡਿਯਹਿ ਮਾਰਿ ॥੧੬॥
sunat baat at kop kai adhik lauaddiyeh maar |16|Learning about the full interaction, the Raja beat her up and left the place.(16)(1)

ਤਵਨ ਲੌਡਿਯਹਿ ਸਾਹੁ ਤ੍ਰਿਯ ਮਾਰੀ ਜੌ ਰਿਸਿ ਖਾਇ ॥
tavan lauaddiyeh saahu triy maaree jau ris khaae |The Minister narrated to the Raja.
ਕਿਯ ਚਰਿਤ੍ਰ ਤਿਨ ਮੰਤ੍ਰਿਯਨ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਸੋ ਕਹਿਯੋ ਸੁਨਾਇ ॥੧॥
kiy charitr tin mantriyan nrip so kahiyo sunaae |1|The maid of the trader’s wife, who was beaten up in a temper, had displayed a few wonders as well:(1)

ਜਾਇ ਸੈਯਦ ਸੋ ਕਰਿਯੋ ਯਰਾਨੋ ॥
jaae saiyad so kariyo yaraano |She got involved herself with a Sayeed.
ਨਿਤ ਤਿਹ ਅਪਨੇ ਸਦਨ ਬੁਲਾਵੈ ॥
nit tih apane sadan bulaavai |She invited him to her house every day and
ਸਾਹੁ ਤ੍ਰਿਯਾ ਕੋ ਦਰਬੁ ਲੁਟਾਵੈ ॥੨॥
saahu triyaa ko darab luttaavai |2|Started to plunder the wealth of the trader’ wife.(2)

ਸਾਹੁ ਤ੍ਰਿਯਾ ਕੀ ਖਾਟ ਪਰ ਇਕ ਦਿਨ ਤਾਹਿ ਸਵਾਇ ॥
saahu triyaa kee khaatt par ik din taeh savaae |One day on the bed of the Shah's wife, having made her sleep,
ਸਾਹੁ ਤ੍ਰਿਯਾ ਸੋ ਅਗਮਨੈ ਕਹਿਯੋ ਬਚਨ ਸੌ ਜਾਇ ॥੩॥
saahu triyaa so agamanai kahiyo bachan sau jaae |3|Before she put Sayeed in the bed belonging to the trader’s wife, the maid had gone to the trader’s wife and told,
ਤਵਨੈ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਤੁਅ ਹਿਤ ਪਰਿਯੋ ਬੇਗਿ ਬੁਲਾਵਤ ਤੋਹਿ ॥
tavanai nrip tua hit pariyo beg bulaavat tohi |Your king, drowning in your love, is calling you quickly.
ਚਲੋ ਅਬੈ ਉਠਿ ਤੁਮ ਤਹਾ ਬਾਤ ਸ੍ਰਵਨ ਧਰਿ ਮੋਹਿ ॥੪॥
chalo abai utth tum tahaa baat sravan dhar mohi |4|‘The Raja, imbued in your love, is waiting. Please go quick to the house where fire is visible.’(3)
ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਠਾਢੋ ਹੇਰੈ ਤੁਮੈ ਤੁਮਰੇ ਅਤਿ ਹਿਤ ਪਾਗਿ ॥
nrip tthaadto herai tumai tumare at hit paag |The king, who is deeply in love with you, is watching you standing.
ਬੇਗਿ ਚਲੋ ਉਠਿ ਤਹਾ ਤੁਮ ਜਹਾ ਬਰਤੁ ਹੈ ਆਗਿ ॥੫॥
beg chalo utth tahaa tum jahaa barat hai aag |5|Making sure, the maid, then, ran and approached the Raja, led him to
ਸੁਨਤ ਬਚਨ ਤ੍ਰਿਯ ਤਹ ਚਲੀ ਕਹਿਯੋ ਨ੍ਰਿਪਤਿ ਸੋ ਧਾਇ ॥
sunat bachan triy tah chalee kahiyo nripat so dhaae |The place where the Sayeed was lying down and said, ‘Here, your
ਸੋਇ ਯਾਰ ਤੁਮਰੀ ਰਹੀ ਗਹੋ ਚਰਨ ਦੋਊ ਜਾਇ ॥੬॥
soe yaar tumaree rahee gaho charan doaoo jaae |6|Beloved is lying down. Go and hold her by her feet.’(6)
ਆਪੁ ਅਗਮਨੇ ਦੌਰਿ ਕੈ ਸੈਯਦਹਿ ਕਹਿਯੋ ਸੁਨਾਇ ॥
aap agamane dauar kai saiyadeh kahiyo sunaae |Previously she (the maid) had already warned the Sayeed and told him
ਗਹਿ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾਨ ਜਾਗਤ ਰਹੋ ਜਿਨਿ ਨ ਗਹੈ ਕੋਊ ਆਇ ॥੭॥
geh kripaan jaagat raho jin na gahai koaoo aae |7|To remain alert, with a sword beside him, in case some one walked in.(7)
ਚੋਰ ਜਰਾਵਤ ਆਗਿ ਜਹ ਤਹ ਤ੍ਰਿਯ ਪਹੁਚੀ ਜਾਇ ॥
chor jaraavat aag jah tah triy pahuchee jaae |On the other side, the place where thieves were sitting with fire on, the trader’s wife came.
ਲੂਟਿ ਕੂਟਿ ਤਾ ਕੌ ਦਿਯੋ ਗਹਿਰੇ ਗੜੇ ਦਬਾਇ ॥੮॥
loott koott taa kau diyo gahire garre dabaae |8|They (the thieves) plundered and killed her and buried her body in a ditch.(8)
ਅੜਿਲ ॥

ਚਰਨ ਛੁਅਨ ਦੋਊ ਕਾਲ ਪ੍ਰੇਰਿ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਆਨਿਯੋ ॥
charan chhuan doaoo kaal prer nrip aaniyo |To touch both the feet (of the king's wife) the King of Kala came (there).
ਚਿਤ੍ਰ ਕਲਾ ਕੋ ਬਚਨ ਸਤਿ ਕਰ ਮਾਨਿਯੋ ॥
chitr kalaa ko bachan sat kar maaniyo |Here, the Raja adhered to the truth of the maid’s words and leapt forward to touch (Sayeed’s) feet.
ਉਠਤ ਤੇਗ ਕੋ ਤਬ ਬਿਨ ਘਾਵ ਪ੍ਰਹਾਰਿਯੋ ॥
autthat teg ko tab bin ghaav prahaariyo |(Sayyid) got up and struck the sword without (thinking).
ਹੋ ਸੁਘਰ ਸਿੰਘ ਰਾਜਾ ਕੋ ਹਨਿ ਹੀ ਡਾਰਿਯੋ ॥੯॥
ho sughar singh raajaa ko han hee ddaariyo |9|The Sayeed jumped up and with one stroke decapitated the Raja.(9)

ਸਾਹੁ ਬਧੂ ਚੋਰਨ ਹਨੀ ਸੈਯਦ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਕੌ ਘਾਇ ॥
saahu badhoo choran hanee saiyad nrip kau ghaae |Shah's wife was killed by thieves and Syed killed the king
ਤਵਨ ਲੌਡਿਯਹਿ ਲੈ ਗਯੋ ਅਪਨੇ ਸਦਨ ਬਨਾਇ ॥੧੦॥
tavan lauaddiyeh lai gayo apane sadan banaae |10|He took that maid well to his house. 10.
ਤ੍ਰਿਯਹਿ ਨ ਅੰਤਰ ਦੀਜਿਯੈ ਤਾ ਕੋ ਲੀਜੈ ਭੇਦ ॥
triyeh na antar deejiyai taa ko leejai bhed |The thieves had been made to kill the trader’s wife, and, after killing
ਬਹੁ ਪੁਰਖਨ ਕੇ ਕਰਤ ਹੈ ਹ੍ਰਿਦੈ ਚੰਚਲਾ ਛੇਦ ॥੧੧॥
bahu purakhan ke karat hai hridai chanchalaa chhed |11|The Raja, the Sayeed took the maid (Chitarkala) to his abode.(11)
ਚਿਤ ਤ੍ਰਿਯ ਕੋ ਹਰਿ ਲੀਜਿਯੈ ਤਾਹਿ ਨ ਦੀਜੈ ਚਿਤ ॥
chit triy ko har leejiyai taeh na deejai chit |The woman’s heart may be captured but never let her steal your heart.
ਨਿਤਪ੍ਰਤਿ ਤਾਹਿ ਰਿਝਾਇਯੈ ਦੈ ਦੈ ਅਗਨਿਤ ਬਿਤ ॥੧੨॥
nitaprat taeh rijhaaeiyai dai dai aganit bit |12|Providing her myriads of victuals, just keep her satisfied.(12)
ਗੰਧ੍ਰਬ ਜਛ ਭੁਜੰਗ ਗਨ ਨਰ ਬਪੁਰੇ ਕਿਨ ਮਾਹਿ ॥
