ਜਿਯੋ ਕਿਯੋ ਯਾਹਿ ਬਿਵਾਹਿ ਕੈ ਗ੍ਰਿਹਿ ਅਪੁਨੇ ਲੈ ਜਾਹਿ ॥੭॥
jiyo kiyo yaeh bivaeh kai grihi apune lai jaeh |7|

As they had pondered to get married with her and take her away.(7)

Chaupaee

ਭੂਪਤਿ ਸਕਲ ਅਧਿਕ ਰਿਸਿ ਕਰੈ ॥
bhoopat sakal adhik ris karai |

All the kings became very angry

ਹਾਥ ਹਥਯਾਰਨ ਊਪਰ ਧਰੈ ॥
haath hathayaaran aoopar dharai |

All the princes flew into rage on her decision and put their hands on their arms,

ਕੁਪਿ ਕੁਪਿ ਬਚਨ ਬਕਤ੍ਰ ਤੇ ਕਹੈ ॥
kup kup bachan bakatr te kahai |

Being angry, he started saying words from his mouth

ਬਿਨੁ ਰਨ ਕਿਯੇ ਆਜੁ ਨਹਿ ਰਹੈ ॥੮॥
bin ran kiye aaj neh rahai |8|

And declared that, without fight, they would not let her go.(8)

ਰਾਇ ਪ੍ਰੋਹਿਤਨ ਲਿਯਾ ਬੁਲਾਈ ॥
raae prohitan liyaa bulaaee |

The king called the Brahmins

ਸੁਭਟ ਸਿੰਘ ਪ੍ਰਤਿ ਦਏ ਪਠਾਈ ॥
subhatt singh prat de patthaaee |

The Raja called the priest over and invited Subhat Singh.

ਮੋ ਪਰ ਕਹੀ ਅਨੁਗ੍ਰਹੁ ਕਰਿਯੈ ॥
mo par kahee anugrahu kariyai |

(Said to him-) Please me

ਬੇਦ ਬਿਧਾਨ ਸਹਿਤ ਇਹ ਬਰਿਯੈ ॥੯॥
bed bidhaan sahit ih bariyai |9|

He requested, ‘Be benevolent to me and get married to my daughter as per the Vedic rites.’(9)

Dohira

ਸੁਭਟ ਸਿੰਘ ਐਸੇ ਕਹੀ ਤ੍ਰਿਯ ਮੁਰ ਆਗੇ ਏਕ ॥
subhatt singh aaise kahee triy mur aage ek |

Subhat Singh, ‘I already possess a woman whom I consider as my wife.

ਬ੍ਯਾਹ ਦੂਸਰੌ ਨ ਕਰੋ ਜੌ ਜਨ ਕਹੈ ਅਨੇਕ ॥੧੦॥
bayaah doosarau na karo jau jan kahai anek |10|

‘Therefore, even insisted upon, I will not marry second time.’(10)

Chaupaee

ਪ੍ਰੋਹਿਤ ਭੂਪਤਿ ਸੌ ਇਹ ਉਚਰੈ ॥
prohit bhoopat sau ih ucharai |

Brahmins said to the king like this

ਸੁਭਟ ਸਿੰਘ ਯਾ ਕੋ ਨਹਿ ਬਰੈ ॥
subhatt singh yaa ko neh barai |

The priest told the Raja, ‘Subhat Singh does not want to marry her.

ਤਾ ਤੇ ਕਛੂ ਜਤਨ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕੀਜੈ ॥
taa te kachhoo jatan prabh keejai |

So O Lord! Make an effort

ਇਹ ਕੰਨ੍ਯਾ ਅਵਰੈ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਦੀਜੈ ॥੧੧॥
eih kanayaa avarai nrip deejai |11|

‘Carryon your efforts and get this princess married to some one else.’(11)

ਦੋਹਰਾ ॥

Dohira

ਤਬ ਕੰਨ੍ਯਾ ਐਸੇ ਕਹੀ ਬਚਨ ਪਿਤਾ ਕੇ ਸਾਥ ॥
tab kanayaa aaise kahee bachan pitaa ke saath |

Then the princess told her father,

ਜੋ ਕੋ ਜੁਧ ਜੀਤੈ ਮੁਝੈ ਵਹੈ ਹਮਾਰੋ ਨਾਥ ॥੧੨॥
jo ko judh jeetai mujhai vahai hamaaro naath |12|

‘Whosoever wins in the war, shall marry me.’(12)

Chaupaee

ਸਭ ਭੂਪਨ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਐਸ ਸੁਨਾਯੋ ॥
sabh bhoopan nrip aais sunaayo |

All the kings were told by the king (Kannaya's father) saying like this

ਆਪ ਜੁਧ ਕੋ ਬਿਵਤ ਬਨਾਯੋ ॥
aap judh ko bivat banaayo |

Then the Raja informed all of them and, himself, commenced preparations for the war.

ਜੋ ਕੋਊ ਤੁਮਲ ਜੁਧ ਹ੍ਯਾਂ ਕਰ ਹੈ ॥
jo koaoo tumal judh hayaan kar hai |

Whosoever shall wage war here,

ਵਹੈ ਯਾਹਿ ਕੰਨ੍ਯਾ ਕਹੁ ਬਰਿ ਹੈ ॥੧੩॥
vahai yaeh kanayaa kahu bar hai |13|

He announced, ‘Whosoever wins the war, will marry my daughter.’(13)

Dohira

ਸੁਨਤ ਬਚਨ ਬੀਰਾਨ ਕੇ ਚਿਤ ਮੈ ਭਯਾ ਅਨੰਦ ॥
sunat bachan beeraan ke chit mai bhayaa anand |

Hearing this pronouncement the princes were pleased,

ਮਥਿ ਸਮੁੰਦ੍ਰ ਦਲ ਪਾਇ ਹੈ ਆਜੁ ਕੁਅਰਿ ਮੁਖ ਚੰਦ ॥੧੪॥
math samundr dal paae hai aaj kuar mukh chand |14|

They thought that the one who won, would marry the girl.(14)

ਸਭਨ ਜੁਧ ਕੇ ਸਾਜ ਬਨਾਏ ॥
sabhan judh ke saaj banaae |

All prepared for war

ਗੰਗਾ ਤੀਰ ਬੀਰ ਚਲਿ ਆਏ ॥
gangaa teer beer chal aae |

They all got ready for fight and came to the Banks of Ganga, They all looked magnificent with armours on,

ਪਹਿਰਿ ਕਵਚ ਸਭ ਸੂਰ ਸੁਹਾਵੈ ॥
pahir kavach sabh soor suhaavai |

All the warriors were being decorated by wearing armor

ਡਾਰਿ ਪਾਖਰੈ ਤੁਰੈ ਨਚਾਵੈ ॥੧੫॥
ddaar paakharai turai nachaavai |15|

And sitting on the horse-backs, they made them to dance.(15)

ਗਰਜੈ ਕਰੀ ਅਸ੍ਵ ਹਿਹਨਾਨੇ ॥
garajai karee asv hihanaane |

The elephants roared and the horses neighed

ਪਹਿਰੇ ਕਵਚ ਸੂਰ ਨਿਜੁਕਾਨੇ ॥
pahire kavach soor nijukaane |

The elephants roared, horses neighed and the brave ones came out dressed in armours.

ਕਿਨਹੂੰ ਕਾਢਿ ਖੜਗ ਕਰ ਲੀਨੋ ॥
kinahoon kaadt kharrag kar leeno |

Someone pulled a sword in his hand

ਕਿਨਹੂੰ ਕੇਸਰਿਯਾ ਬਾਨਾ ਕੀਨੋ ॥੧੬॥
kinahoon kesariyaa baanaa keeno |16|

Some took out swords; they wore clothes in saffron colours.(l6)

Dohira

ਕਿਨੂੰ ਤਿਲੌਨੇ ਬਸਤ੍ਰ ਕਰਿ ਕਟਿ ਸੋ ਕਸੀ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾਨ ॥
kinoo tilauane basatr kar katt so kasee kripaan |

Some put red clothes on and girded the swords around their waists.

ਜੋ ਗੰਗਾ ਤਟ ਜੂਝਿ ਹੈ ਕਰਿ ਹੈ ਸ੍ਵਰਗ ਪਯਾਨ ॥੧੭॥
jo gangaa tatt joojh hai kar hai svarag payaan |17|

They declared, ‘The one who fights at the Bank of Gangs will go to the heaven.’(17)

ਜੋਰਿ ਅਨਿਨ ਰਾਜਾ ਚੜੇ ਪਰਾ ਨਿਸਾਨੇ ਘਾਵ ॥
jor anin raajaa charre paraa nisaane ghaav |

Some Rajas along with their armies marched forward with the beats of the drums.

ਭਾਤਿ ਭਾਤਿ ਜੋਧਾ ਲਰੇ ਅਧਿਕ ਹ੍ਰਿਦੈ ਕਰ ਚਾਵ ॥੧੮॥
bhaat bhaat jodhaa lare adhik hridai kar chaav |18|

Most of them came to fight with great ambitions in their minds.(l8)

ਤਬ ਕੰਨ੍ਯਾ ਸਭ ਸਖੀ ਬੁਲਾਈ ॥
tab kanayaa sabh sakhee bulaaee |

Then (that) Raj Kumari called all the Sakhis

ਭਾਤਿ ਭਾਤਿ ਸੋ ਕਰੀ ਬਡਾਈ ॥
bhaat bhaat so karee baddaaee |

Then the Princess called all her friends and showered praises on them,

ਕੈ ਲਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਸੁਰਸਰਿ ਤਟ ਮਰਿ ਹੌ ॥
kai lar kar surasar tatt mar hau |

Either I will fight and die on the banks of the Ganges,

ਨਾਤਰ ਸੁਭਟ ਸਿੰਘ ਕਹ ਬਰਿ ਹੌ ॥੧੯॥
naatar subhatt singh kah bar hau |19|

And said, ‘Either I will marry Subhat Singh or I will lay life fighting on the Bank of Ganga.’(19)
