ਬਡੋ ਧਾਨ ਕੋ ਧਨ ਤੈ ਦਾਨ ਪ੍ਰਮਾਨਹੀ ॥
baddo dhaan ko dhan tai daan pramaanahee |The merit of donation of grain (grain) is considered greater than wealth.
ਹੋ ਚਾਰਿ ਸੁ ਖਟ ਦਸ ਆਠ ਪੁਰਾਨ ਬਖਾਨਹੀ ॥੮॥
ho chaar su khatt das aatth puraan bakhaanahee |8|This thing has been told in four Vedas, six Shastras and eighteen Puranas.8.
ਦੋਹਰਾ ॥

ਇਹ ਜੋ ਕੋਠੀ ਅੰਨ ਜੁਤ ਦੀਜੈ ਦਿਜਨ ਬੁਲਾਇ ॥
eih jo kotthee an jut deejai dijan bulaae |This is the storehouse of grain, call the brahmins and donate it.
ਇਹੈ ਕਹਿਯੋ ਮੁਰਿ ਮਾਨਿਯੈ ਸੁਨੁ ਚੌਧ੍ਰਿਨ ਕੇ ਰਾਇ ॥੯॥
eihai kahiyo mur maaniyai sun chauadhrin ke raae |9|Hey Shiromani Chaudhary! What I want, accept this (thing) of mine. 9.
ਵਹੈ ਭਿਟੌਅਨ ਬਾਮਨੀ ਲੀਨੀ ਨਿਕਟ ਬੁਲਾਇ ॥
vahai bhittauan baamanee leenee nikatt bulaae |(The woman) called that matchmaking brahmin (maid) to her
ਜਾਰ ਸਹਿਤ ਤਿਹ ਨਾਜ ਕੀ ਕੁਠਿਯਾ ਦਈ ਉਠਾਇ ॥੧੦॥
jaar sahit tih naaj kee kutthiyaa dee utthaae |10|And raised the granary with the friend. 10.

ਮੂਰਖ ਬਾਤ ਨ ਕਛੁ ਲਖਿ ਲਈ ॥

ਕਿਹ ਬਿਧਿ ਨਾਰਿ ਤਾਹਿ ਛਲਿ ਗਈ ॥
kih bidh naar taeh chhal gee |How the woman has cheated him.
ਜਾਨ੍ਯੋ ਦਾਨ ਆਜੁ ਤ੍ਰਿਯ ਕੀਨੋ ॥
jaanayo daan aaj triy keeno |(He) understood that today the woman has donated
ਤਾ ਕੌ ਕਛੂ ਚਰਿਤ੍ਰ ਨ ਚੀਨੋ ॥੧੧॥
taa kau kachhoo charitr na cheeno |11|(But) nothing could understand his character. 11.
ਦਾਨ ਭਿਟੌਅਨ ਕੋ ਜਬ ਦਿਯੋ ॥
daan bhittauan ko jab diyo |When he gave a donation to the person who arranged the mail (maid).
ਕਛੁ ਜੜ ਭੇਦ ਸਮਝਿ ਨਹਿ ਲਿਯੋ ॥
kachh jarr bhed samajh neh liyo |So the fool (Chowdhary) could not understand anything.
ਤਹ ਤੇ ਕਾਢਿ ਅੰਨ ਤਿਨ ਖਾਯੋ ॥
tah te kaadt an tin khaayo |They took out food in the cell and ate it
ਤਵਨ ਜਾਰ ਕੋ ਘਰ ਪਹੁਚਾਯੋ ॥੧੨॥
tavan jaar ko ghar pahuchaayo |12|And brought her (woman's) friend home. 12.
ਇਤਿ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਚਰਿਤ੍ਰ ਪਖ੍ਯਾਨੇ ਤ੍ਰਿਯਾ ਚਰਿਤ੍ਰੇ ਮੰਤ੍ਰੀ ਭੂਪ ਸੰਬਾਦੇ ਇਕ ਸੌ ਛਪਨੋ ਚਰਿਤ੍ਰ ਸਮਾਪਤਮ ਸਤੁ ਸੁਭਮ ਸਤੁ ॥੧੫੬॥੩੦੯੮॥ਅਫਜੂੰ॥

ਬਿਦ੍ਰਭ ਦੇਸ ਭੀਤਰ ਰਹੈ ਭੀਮਸੈਨ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਏਕ ॥
bidrabh des bheetar rahai bheemasain nrip ek |In the country of Vidarbha there lived a king named Bhimsaena.
ਹੈ ਗੈ ਰਥ ਹੀਰਨ ਜਰੇ ਝੂਲਹਿ ਦ੍ਵਾਰ ਅਨੇਕ ॥੧॥
hai gai rath heeran jare jhooleh dvaar anek |1|Elephants, horses and chariots studded with diamonds kept swinging at his door. 1.
ਦਮਵੰਤੀ ਤਾ ਕੀ ਸੁਤਾ ਜਾ ਕੋ ਰੂਪ ਅਪਾਰ ॥
damavantee taa kee sutaa jaa ko roop apaar |He had a daughter named Damvanti whose beauty was beyond measure.
ਦੇਵ ਅਦੇਵ ਗਿਰੈ ਧਰਨਿ ਤਿਸ ਕੀ ਪ੍ਰਭਾ ਨਿਹਾਰਿ ॥੨॥
dev adev girai dharan tis kee prabhaa nihaar |2|Gods and giants used to fall on the earth after seeing his light. 2.

ਕਾਮ ਦੇਵ ਤਿਹ ਚਹੈ ਸੁ ਕ੍ਯੋਹੂੰ ਪਾਇਯੈ ॥
kaam dev tih chahai su kayohoon paaeiyai |Kam Dev also wanted to get her somehow.
ਇੰਦ੍ਰ ਚੰਦ੍ਰ ਕਹੈ ਤਾਹਿ ਬ੍ਯਾਹਿ ਲੈ ਆਇਯੈ ॥
eindr chandr kahai taeh bayaeh lai aaeiyai |Indra and Chandra also used to say to get her married.
ਕਾਰਤਕੇਅ ਤਿਹ ਬ੍ਯਾਹਨ ਕਿਯੋ ਨਿਹਾਰਿ ਕਰਿ ॥

ਹੋ ਮਹਾ ਰੁਦ੍ਰ ਬਨ ਬਸੇ ਨ ਆਏ ਪਲਟਿ ਘਰਿ ॥੩॥
ho mahaa rudr ban base na aae palatt ghar |3|(And seeing him) Maha Rudra went to live in Ban and (never again) returned home. 3.
ਨੈਨ ਹਰਨ ਕੇ ਹਰੇ ਬੈਨ ਪਿਕ ਕੇ ਹਰਿ ਲੀਨੇ ॥
nain haran ke hare bain pik ke har leene |(He) has stolen the eyes of the deer and the words of the cuckoo.
ਹਰਿ ਦਾਮਨਿ ਕੀ ਦਿਪਤਿ ਦਸਨ ਦਾਰਿਮ ਬਸ ਕੀਨੇ ॥
har daaman kee dipat dasan daarim bas keene |Light from lightning is for everyone and pomegranate seeds for teeth have settled.
ਕੀਰ ਨਾਸਿਕਾ ਹਰੀ ਕਦਲਿ ਜੰਘਨ ਤੇ ਹਾਰੇ ॥
keer naasikaa haree kadal janghan te haare |Nak is snatched from the parrot and (seeing) the wings of the banana is giving up.
ਹੋ ਛਪੇ ਜਲਜ ਜਲ ਮਾਹਿ ਆਂਖਿ ਲਖਿ ਲਜਤ ਤਿਹਾਰੇ ॥੪॥
ho chhape jalaj jal maeh aankh lakh lajat tihaare |4|Shamed by seeing his eyes, Kamal has gone to hide in the water. 4.
ਦੋਹਰਾ ॥

ਤਾ ਕੀ ਪ੍ਰਭਾ ਜਹਾਨ ਮੈ ਪ੍ਰਚੁਰ ਭਈ ਚਹੂੰ ਦੇਸ ॥
taa kee prabhaa jahaan mai prachur bhee chahoon des |Her beauty has spread (i.e. become famous) to the four corners of the world.
ਸਭ ਬ੍ਯਾਹਨ ਤਾ ਕੌ ਚਹੈ ਸੇਸ ਸੁਰੇਸ ਲੁਕੇਸ ॥੫॥
sabh bayaahan taa kau chahai ses sures lukes |5|And Sheshnag, Indra and Kuber ('Lukes') all want to marry her.5.
ਸੁਨਿ ਪਛਿਨ ਕੇ ਬਕਤ੍ਰ ਤੇ ਤਿਯ ਕੀ ਸੁੰਦਰ ਹਾਲ ॥
sun pachhin ke bakatr te tiy kee sundar haal |Hearing about the state of the woman's beauty from the mouth of the birds
ਮਾਨ ਸਰੋਵਰ ਛੋਡਿ ਤਿਹ ਆਵਤ ਭਏ ਮਰਾਲ ॥੬॥
maan sarovar chhodd tih aavat bhe maraal |6|Swans have come there after leaving Mansarovar. 6.

ਦਮਵੰਤੀ ਤੇ ਹੰਸ ਨਿਹਾਰੇ ॥
damavantee te hans nihaare |Damvanti saw swans
ਰੂਪ ਮਾਨ ਚਿਤ ਮਾਝ ਬਿਚਾਰੇ ॥
roop maan chit maajh bichaare |(So they) thought very much in mind.
ਸਖਿਯਨ ਸਹਿਤ ਆਪ ਉਠ ਧਾਈ ॥
sakhiyan sahit aap utth dhaaee |She got up and walked along with her friends
ਏਕ ਹੰਸ ਤਿਨ ਤੇ ਗਹਿ ਲ੍ਯਾਈ ॥੭॥
ek hans tin te geh layaaee |7|And one of them caught a goose. 7.
ਹੰਸ ਬਾਚ ॥
hans baach |Hans said:
ਸੁਨੁ ਰਾਨੀ ਇਕ ਕਥਾ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਸੌ ॥
sun raanee ik kathaa prakaasau |O Queen! Listen, (I) tell a story
ਤੁਮਰੇ ਜਿਯ ਕੋ ਭਰਮ ਬਿਨਾਸੌ ॥
tumare jiy ko bharam binaasau |And remove the illusion of your mind.
ਨਲ ਰਾਜਾ ਦਛਿਨ ਇਕ ਰਹਈ ॥
nal raajaa dachhin ik rahee |In the south direction lives a king named Nal.
ਅਤਿ ਸੁੰਦਰ ਤਾ ਕੋ ਜਗ ਕਹਈ ॥੮॥
at sundar taa ko jag kahee |8|The world calls him very beautiful. 8.

ਤੇਜਮਾਨ ਸੁੰਦਰ ਧਨੀ ਤਾਹਿ ਉਚਾਰਤ ਲੋਗ ॥
tejamaan sundar dhanee taeh uchaarat log |People call him bright, handsome and rich.
