ਛਾਹ ਹੇਰ ਜੋ ਇਹ ਚਖ ਦਛਿਨ ਮਾਰਿ ਹੈ ॥
chhaah her jo ih chakh dachhin maar hai |‘Looking on the image (of fish) in the oil,
ਹੋ ਸੋ ਨਰ ਹਮਰੇ ਸਾਥ ਸੁ ਆਇ ਬਿਹਾਰਿ ਹੈ ॥੬॥
ho so nar hamare saath su aae bihaar hai |6|‘Whosoever hit the fish will marry me.’(6)
ਦੇਸ ਦੇਸ ਕੇ ਏਸਨ ਲਯੋ ਬੁਲਾਇ ਕੈ ॥
des des ke esan layo bulaae kai |The princes from all the countries were invited.
ਮਛ ਅਛ ਸਰ ਮਾਰੋ ਧਨੁਖ ਚੜਾਇ ਕੈ ॥
machh achh sar maaro dhanukh charraae kai |They were told to hit the fish while looking at it in the oil.
ਡੀਮ ਡਾਮ ਕਰਿ ਤਾ ਕੋ ਬਿਸਿਖ ਬਗਾਵਹੀ ॥
ddeem ddaam kar taa ko bisikh bagaavahee |Many came with great pride and threw arrows.
ਹੋ ਲਗੈ ਨ ਤਾ ਕੋ ਚੋਟ ਬਹੁਰਿ ਫਿਰਿ ਆਵਹੀ ॥੭॥
ho lagai na taa ko chott bahur fir aavahee |7|But no one could hit and they remained disappointed.(7)
ਭੁਜੰਗ ਛੰਦ ॥
bhujang chhand |Bhujang Verse:
ਕਰੈ ਡੀਮ ਡਾਮੈ ਬਡੇ ਸੂਰ ਧਾਵੈ ॥
karai ddeem ddaamai badde soor dhaavai |They used to become strong warriors.
ਲਗੈ ਬਾਨ ਤਾ ਕੌ ਨ ਰਾਜਾ ਲਜਾਵੈ ॥
lagai baan taa kau na raajaa lajaavai |But the kings were ashamed because of the lack of arrows.
ਚਲੈ ਨੀਚ ਨਾਰੀਨ ਕੈ ਭਾਤਿ ਐਸੀ ॥
chalai neech naareen kai bhaat aaisee |They walked as low as women,
ਮਨੋ ਸੀਲਵੰਤੀ ਸੁ ਨਾਰੀ ਨ ਵੈਸੀ ॥੮॥
mano seelavantee su naaree na vaisee |8|As if Shilwan woman is not like that. 8.
ਦੋਹਰਾ ॥

ਐਂਡੇ ਬੈਂਡੇ ਹ੍ਵੈ ਨ੍ਰਿਪਤਿ ਚੋਟ ਚਲਾਵੈ ਜਾਇ ॥
aaindde baindde hvai nripat chott chalaavai jaae |Kings went to shoot arrows with crooked wings.
ਤਾਹਿ ਬਿਸਿਖ ਲਾਗੇ ਨਹੀ ਸੀਸ ਰਹੈ ਨਿਹੁਰਾਇ ॥੯॥
taeh bisikh laage nahee sees rahai nihuraae |9|The fish could not be hit by the arrow and they were left with their heads bowed. 9.
ਬਿਸਿਖ ਬਗਾਵੈ ਕੋਪ ਕਰਿ ਤਾਹਿ ਨ ਲਾਗੇ ਘਾਇ ॥
bisikh bagaavai kop kar taeh na laage ghaae |(Many) were angry and shot arrows, (but the arrows) did not hit the fish.
ਖਿਸਲਿ ਕਰਾਹਾ ਤੇ ਪਰੈ ਜਰੇ ਤੇਲ ਮੈ ਜਾਇ ॥੧੦॥
khisal karaahaa te parai jare tel mai jaae |10|(They) used to slip into the cauldron and burn in the oil. 10.
ਭੁਜੰਗ ਛੰਦ ॥
bhujang chhand |Bhujang Verse:
ਪਰੇ ਤੇਲ ਮੈ ਭੂਜਿ ਕੈ ਭਾਤਿ ਐਸੀ ॥
pare tel mai bhooj kai bhaat aaisee |They used to get burnt like this by falling in oil
ਬਰੇ ਜ੍ਯੋਂ ਪਕਾਵੈ ਮਹਾ ਨਾਰਿ ਜੈਸੀ ॥
bare jayon pakaavai mahaa naar jaisee |The way old women cook.
ਕੋਊ ਬਾਨ ਤਾ ਕੋ ਨਹੀ ਬੀਰ ਮਾਰੈ ॥
koaoo baan taa ko nahee beer maarai |No warrior could shoot that fish with an arrow.
ਮਰੇ ਲਾਜ ਤੇ ਰਾਜ ਧਾਮੈ ਸਿਧਾਰੈ ॥੧੧॥
mare laaj te raaj dhaamai sidhaarai |11|(Therefore) they went to (their) capitals in shame. 11.
ਦੋਹਰਾ ॥

ਅਧਿਕ ਲਜਤ ਭੂਪਤਿ ਭਏ ਤਾ ਕੌ ਬਾਨ ਚਲਾਇ ॥
adhik lajat bhoopat bhe taa kau baan chalaae |The princes were feeling ashamed,
ਚੋਟ ਨ ਕਾਹੂੰ ਕੀ ਲਗੀ ਸੀਸ ਰਹੇ ਨਿਹੁਰਾਇ ॥੧੨॥
chott na kaahoon kee lagee sees rahe nihuraae |12|As their arrows were going astray, and they felt remorseful.(12)
ਪਰੀ ਨ ਪ੍ਯਾਰੀ ਹਾਥ ਮੈ ਮਛਹਿ ਲਗਿਯੋ ਨ ਬਾਨ ॥
paree na payaaree haath mai machheh lagiyo na baan |Neither they could hit the fish nor they achieved the beloved.
ਲਜਤਨ ਗ੍ਰਿਹ ਅਪਨੇ ਗਏ ਬਨ ਕੋ ਕਿਯੋ ਪਯਾਨ ॥੧੩॥
lajatan grih apane ge ban ko kiyo payaan |13|Drenched in humiliation, some went to their homes and some to thejungle.(13)
ਚੌਪਈ ॥

ਐਸੀ ਭਾਤਿ ਕਥਾ ਤਹ ਭਈ ॥
aaisee bhaat kathaa tah bhee |Such a story happened there.
ਉਤੈ ਕਥਾ ਪੰਡ੍ਵਨ ਪਰ ਗਈ ॥
autai kathaa panddvan par gee |The word went round and the news reached to the Pandavs.
ਜਹਾ ਦੁਖਿਤ ਵੈ ਬਨਹਿ ਬਿਹਾਰੈ ॥
jahaa dukhit vai baneh bihaarai |Where they used to wander around in misery
ਕੰਦ ਮੂਲ ਭਛੈ ਮ੍ਰਿਗ ਮਾਰੈ ॥੧੪॥
kand mool bhachhai mrig maarai |14|Distrustfully, they were already roaming around in the jungles,And were living by hunting deer and eating tree leaves and roots.(14)
ਦੋਹਰਾ ॥

ਕੁੰਤੀ ਪੁਤ੍ਰ ਬਿਲੋਕਿ ਕੈ ਐਸੇ ਕਹਿਯੋ ਸੁਨਾਇ ॥
kuntee putr bilok kai aaise kahiyo sunaae |Kunti’s son (Arjan) announced that,
ਮਤਸ ਦੇਸ ਮੈ ਬਨ ਘਨੋ ਤਹੀ ਬਿਹਾਰੈ ਜਾਇ ॥੧੫॥
matas des mai ban ghano tahee bihaarai jaae |15|He was proceeding to the country of Machh where there were bettertrees.(15)
ਚੌਪਈ ॥

ਪਾਡਵ ਬਚਨ ਸੁਨਤ ਜਬ ਭਏ ॥
paaddav bachan sunat jab bhe |When the Pandavas heard this
ਮਤਸ ਦੇਸ ਕੀ ਓਰ ਸਿਧਏ ॥
matas des kee or sidhe |Heeding to his suggestion, they all marched towards the country ofMachh
ਜਹਾ ਸੁਯੰਬਰ ਦ੍ਰੁਪਦ ਰਚਾਯੋ ॥
jahaa suyanbar drupad rachaayo |Where Drupada had created the Suambar
ਸਭ ਭੂਪਨ ਕੋ ਬੋਲਿ ਪਠਾਯੋ ॥੧੬॥
sabh bhoopan ko bol patthaayo |16|Where swayyamber was proceeding and all the princes had beeninvited.(16)
ਦੋਹਰਾ ॥

ਜਹਾ ਸੁਯੰਬਰ ਦ੍ਰੋਪਦੀ ਰਚਿਯੋ ਕਰਾਹ ਤਪਾਇ ॥
jahaa suyanbar dropadee rachiyo karaah tapaae |Where Daropdee had arranged swayyamber and cauldron was placed,
ਤਹੀ ਜਾਇ ਠਾਢੋ ਭਯੋ ਧਨੀ ਧਨੰਜੈ ਰਾਇ ॥੧੭॥
tahee jaae tthaadto bhayo dhanee dhananjai raae |17|Arjan went and stood at the place.(17)
ਦੋਊ ਪਾਵ ਕਰਾਹ ਪਰ ਰਾਖਤ ਭਯੋ ਬਨਾਇ ॥
doaoo paav karaah par raakhat bhayo banaae |He put both his feet at the cauldron,
ਬਹੁਰਿ ਮਛ ਕੀ ਛਾਹ ਕਹ ਹੇਰਿਯੋ ਧਨੁਖ ਚੜਾਇ ॥੧੮॥
bahur machh kee chhaah kah heriyo dhanukh charraae |18|And, aiming at the fish, place an arrow in the bow.(18)
ਸਵੈਯਾ ॥

ਕੋਪਿ ਕੁਵੰਡ ਚੜਾਇ ਕੈ ਪਾਰਥ ਮਛ ਕੌ ਦਛਿਨ ਪਛ ਨਿਹਾਰਿਯੋ ॥
kop kuvandd charraae kai paarath machh kau dachhin pachh nihaariyo |In rage, he looked at the right eye of the fish.
ਕਾਨ ਪ੍ਰਮਾਨ ਪ੍ਰਤੰਚਹਿ ਆਨ ਮਹਾ ਕਰਿ ਕੈ ਅਭਿਮਾਨ ਹਕਾਰਿਯੋ ॥
kaan pramaan pratancheh aan mahaa kar kai abhimaan hakaariyo |He pulled the bow up to his ears and, with pride, he roared,
ਖੰਡਨ ਕੈ ਰਨ ਮੰਡਨ ਜੇ ਬਲਵੰਡਨ ਕੋ ਸਭ ਪੌਰਖ ਹਾਰਿਯੋ ॥
khanddan kai ran manddan je balavanddan ko sabh pauarakh haariyo |‘You, the brave Rajas from all the regions, have failed.’
ਯੌ ਕਹਿ ਬਾਨ ਤਜ੍ਯੋ ਤਜਿ ਕਾਨਿ ਘਨੀ ਰਿਸਿ ਠਾਨਿ ਤਕਿਯੋ ਤਿਹ ਮਾਰਿਯੋ ॥੧੯॥
yau keh baan tajayo taj kaan ghanee ris tthaan takiyo tih maariyo |19|Challenging thus, he shot an arrow right in the eye.(19)
ਦੋਹਰਾ ॥

ਪਾਰਥ ਧਨੁ ਕਰਖਤ ਭਏ ਬਰਖੇ ਫੂਲ ਅਨੇਕ ॥
paarath dhan karakhat bhe barakhe fool anek |When he had stretched the bow, all the gods were delighted and theyshowered the flowers.
ਦੇਵ ਸਭੈ ਹਰਖਤ ਭਏ ਹਰਖਿਯੋ ਹਠੀ ਨ ਏਕ ॥੨੦॥
dev sabhai harakhat bhe harakhiyo hatthee na ek |20|But stubborn competitors were not pleased.(20)
ਚੌਪਈ ॥

ਯਹ ਗਤਿ ਦੇਖਿ ਬੀਰ ਰਿਸ ਭਰੇ ॥
yah gat dekh beer ris bhare |Seeing this situation, all the warriors were filled with anger
ਲੈ ਲੈ ਹਥਿ ਹਥਿਯਾਰਨ ਪਰੇ ॥
lai lai hath hathiyaaran pare |Seeing this phenomenon, the contenders flew into the rage and, takingtheir weapons came forward.
ਯਾ ਜੁਗਿਯਹਿ ਜਮ ਲੋਕ ਪਠੈਹੈਂ ॥
yaa jugiyeh jam lok patthaihain |(Thinking that) let's send Yama-Lok to this Jogi
ਐਂਚਿ ਦ੍ਰੋਪਦੀ ਨਿਜੁ ਤ੍ਰਿਯ ਕੈਹੈਂ ॥੨੧॥
aainch dropadee nij triy kaihain |21|‘We will send this sage-type into death knell and take away Daropdeeas the wife.’(21)
ਦੋਹਰਾ ॥

ਤਬ ਪਾਰਥ ਕੇਤੇ ਕਟਕ ਕਾਟੇ ਕੋਪ ਬਢਾਇ ॥
tab paarath kete kattak kaatte kop badtaae |Then Parth (Arjan) was outraged, as well, and decimated a few.
ਕੇਤੇ ਕਟਿ ਡਾਰੇ ਕਟਿਨ ਕਾਟੇ ਕਰੀ ਬਨਾਇ ॥੨੨॥
kete katt ddaare kattin kaatte karee banaae |22|He annihilated many and cut off a number of elephants.(22)
ਭੁਜੰਗ ਛੰਦ ॥
bhujang chhand |Bhujang Verse:
ਕਿਤੇ ਛਤ੍ਰਿ ਛੇਕੇ ਕਿਤੇ ਛੈਲ ਛੋਰੇ ॥
kite chhatr chheke kite chhail chhore |How many umbrellas have been pierced and where young warriors have been released.
ਕਿਤੇ ਛਤ੍ਰ ਧਾਰੀਨ ਕੇ ਛਤ੍ਰ ਤੋਰੇ ॥
kite chhatr dhaareen ke chhatr tore |How many umbrella holders broke their umbrellas.
ਕਿਤੇ ਹਾਕਿ ਮਾਰੇ ਕਿਤੇ ਮਾਰਿ ਡਾਰੈ ॥
kite haak maare kite maar ddaarai |How many he killed in disguise and how many he killed (just like that).
ਚਹੂੰ ਓਰ ਬਾਜੇ ਸੁ ਮਾਰੂ ਨਗਾਰੇ ॥੨੩॥
chahoon or baaje su maaroo nagaare |23|Deadly sounds started playing in the four sides. 23.

ਅਨ ਵਰਤ੍ਰਯਨ ਨਿਰਵਰਤ ਕੈ ਅਬਲਾ ਲਈ ਉਠਾਇ ॥
an varatrayan niravarat kai abalaa lee utthaae |Repulsing those obstinate ones, he picked up the woman,
ਡਾਰਿ ਕਾਪਿ ਧ੍ਵਜ ਰਥ ਲਈ ਬਹੁ ਬੀਰਨ ਕੋ ਘਾਇ ॥੨੪॥
ddaar kaap dhvaj rath lee bahu beeran ko ghaae |24|Killing many more, he put her in the chariot.(24)

ਕਿਤੀ ਬਾਹ ਕਾਟੇ ਕਿਤੇ ਪਾਵ ਤੋਰੇ ॥
kitee baah kaatte kite paav tore |The arms of some were cut off and the feet of others were broken.
ਮਹਾ ਜੁਧ ਸੋਡੀਨ ਕੇ ਛਤ੍ਰ ਛੋਰੇ ॥
mahaa judh soddeen ke chhatr chhore |Many had their arms and feet cut and the proud ones lost their royalcanopies,.
ਕਿਤੇ ਪੇਟ ਫਾਟੇ ਕਿਤੇ ਠੌਰ ਮਾਰੇ ॥
kite pett faatte kite tthauar maare |Some had their stomachs burst and some died on the spot.
