ਭੈਨ ਭ੍ਰਾਤ ਅਤਿ ਹੀ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਯੋ ॥੨੧੬੨॥
bhain bhraat at hee sukh paayo |2162|

When Rukmani saw her brother Rukmi, then both the brother and sister were extremely pleased.2162.

ਬ੍ਯਾਹ ਭਲੋ ਅਨਰੁਧ ਕੋ ਕਯੋ ॥
bayaah bhalo anarudh ko kayo |

Anrudha married well.

ਜਦੁਪਤਿ ਆਪ ਸੇਹਰਾ ਦਯੋ ॥
jadupat aap seharaa dayo |

The marriage of Aniruddh was solemnised very nicely and Krishna himself vested him with the nuptial wreath

ਜੂਪ ਮੰਤ੍ਰ ਉਤ ਰੁਕਮਿ ਬਿਚਾਰਿਯੋ ॥
joop mantr ut rukam bichaariyo |

Meanwhile, Rukmi thought of gambling

ਖੇਲ ਹਲੀ ਹਮ ਸੰਗ ਉਚਾਰਿਯੋ ॥੨੧੬੩॥
khel halee ham sang uchaariyo |2163|

Rukmi thought of gambling and he invited Balram for it.2163.

SWAYYA

ਸੰਗ ਹਲੀ ਕੇ ਤਬੈ ਰੁਕਮੀ ਕਬਿ ਸ੍ਯਾਮ ਜੂਆ ਹੂ ਕੋ ਖੇਲੁ ਮਚਾਯੋ ॥
sang halee ke tabai rukamee kab sayaam jooaa hoo ko khel machaayo |

Poet Shyam (says) Then Rukmi made a gambling game with Balaram.

ਭੂਪ ਘਨੇ ਜਿਹ ਥੇ ਤਿਨ ਦੇਖਤ ਦਰਬ ਘਨੋ ਤਿਹ ਮਾਝਿ ਲਗਾਯੋ ॥
bhoop ghane jih the tin dekhat darab ghano tih maajh lagaayo |

Rukmi began to play gambling with Balram and many of the kings who were standing there, placed their infinite wealth on stake

ਦਾਵ ਪਰਿਯੋ ਮੁਸਲੀ ਕੋ ਸਭੋ ਰੁਕਮੀ ਹੂ ਕੋ ਦਾਵ ਪਰਿਯੋ ਯੌ ਸੁਨਾਯੋ ॥
daav pariyo musalee ko sabho rukamee hoo ko daav pariyo yau sunaayo |

All the stakes were for Balaram, (but Sri Krishna) said thus saying that Rukmi's stakes were staked.

ਹਾਸ ਕੀਯੋ ਮਿਲਿ ਕੈ ਅਤਿ ਹੀ ਗਰੁੜ ਧੁਜ ਭ੍ਰਾਤ ਘਨੋ ਰਿਸਵਾਯੋ ॥੨੧੬੪॥
haas keeyo mil kai at hee garurr dhuj bhraat ghano risavaayo |2164|

When Rukmi made use of his bet, talking from the side of Balram, all of them giggled, Krishna was pleased, but Balram got infuriated.2164.

CHAUPAI

ਐਸੇ ਘਨੀ ਬੇਰ ਡਹਕਾਯੋ ॥
aaise ghanee ber ddahakaayo |

Thus teased many times,

ਜਦੁਪਤਿ ਭ੍ਰਾਤ ਕ੍ਰੋਧ ਅਤਿ ਆਯੋ ॥
jadupat bhraat krodh at aayo |

In this way, being irritated for several times, Balram was highly enraged

ਏਕ ਗਦਾ ਉਠਿ ਕਰ ਮੈ ਧਰੀ ॥
ek gadaa utth kar mai dharee |

(He) got up and held a mace in his hand

ਸਭ ਭੂਪਨ ਕੀ ਪੂਜਾ ਕਰੀ ॥੨੧੬੫॥
sabh bhoopan kee poojaa karee |2165|

He took his mace in his mace in his hand and beat all the kings.2165.

ਘਨੇ ਚਾਇ ਸੋ ਭੂਪ ਸੰਘਾਰੇ ॥
ghane chaae so bhoop sanghaare |

The kings have been knocked down with great enthusiasm.

ਪਰੇ ਝੂਮ ਕੈ ਭੂ ਬਿਸੰਭਾਰੇ ॥
pare jhoom kai bhoo bisanbhaare |

He killed many kings and they fell unconscious on the earth

ਗਿਰੇ ਸ੍ਰਉਨ ਕੇ ਰਸ ਸੋ ਰਾਤੇ ॥
gire sraun ke ras so raate |

They are lying down soaked in blood.

ਖੇਡਿ ਬਸੰਤ ਮਨੋ ਮਦਮਾਤੇ ॥੨੧੬੬॥
khedd basant mano madamaate |2166|

Being saturated with blood, they appeared roaming and intoxicated in spring.2166.

ਫਿਰਤ ਭੂਤ ਸੋ ਤਿਨ ਮੈ ਹਲੀ ॥
firat bhoot so tin mai halee |

Balram roams in them as a ghost

ਜੈਸੇ ਅੰਤ ਕਾਲ ਸਿਵ ਬਲੀ ॥
jaise ant kaal siv balee |

Amongst all of them Balram was roaming like a ghost like Kali on the doomsday

ਜਿਉ ਰਿਸਿ ਡੰਡ ਲੀਏ ਜਮੁ ਆਵੈ ॥
jiau ris ddandd lee jam aavai |

(or else) as Yamaraj comes with a rod,

ਤੈਸੇ ਹੀ ਮੁਸਲੀ ਛਬਿ ਪਾਵੈ ॥੨੧੬੭॥
taise hee musalee chhab paavai |2167|

He appeared like Yama carrying his staff.2167.

ਰੁਕਮੀ ਭਯੋ ਗਦਾ ਗਹਿ ਠਾਢੋ ॥
rukamee bhayo gadaa geh tthaadto |

(From the other side) Rukmi also stood holding the mace.

ਘਨੋ ਕ੍ਰੋਧ ਤਾ ਕੈ ਚਿਤਿ ਬਾਢੋ ॥
ghano krodh taa kai chit baadto |

Rukmi took his mace and stood up and became dreadfully angry

ਭਾਜਤ ਭਯੋ ਨ ਸਾਮੁਹੇ ਆਯੋ ॥
bhaajat bhayo na saamuhe aayo |

(He) did not run away, but came forward and stood firm.

ਆਇ ਹਲੀ ਸੋ ਜੁਧੁ ਮਚਾਯੋ ॥੨੧੬੮॥
aae halee so judh machaayo |2168|

He did not run away and coming in front of Balram began to fight with him.2168.

ਹਲੀ ਗਦਾ ਤਬ ਤਾ ਪਰ ਮਾਰੀ ॥
halee gadaa tab taa par maaree |

Then Balaram struck him (Rukmi) with a mace.

ਉਨ ਹੂ ਕੋਪ ਸੋ ਤਾ ਪਰ ਝਾਰੀ ॥
aun hoo kop so taa par jhaaree |

When Balram struck a blow of his mace on him, he also in great fury struck his mace on Balram

ਸ੍ਰਉਨਤ ਛੁਟਿਯੋ ਅਰੁਨ ਦੋਊ ਭਏ ॥
sraunat chhuttiyo arun doaoo bhe |

(Both) blood began to flow and both became red (with blood).

ਮਾਨਹੁ ਕ੍ਰੋਧ ਰੂਪ ਹੁਇ ਗਏ ॥੨੧੬੯॥
maanahu krodh roop hue ge |2169|

Both became red with the flow of blood and appeared like the manifestations of anger.2169.

DOHRA

ਦਾਤ ਕਾਢਿ ਇਕ ਹਸਤ ਥੋ ਸੋ ਇਹ ਨੈਨ ਨਿਹਾਰਿ ॥
daat kaadt ik hasat tho so ih nain nihaar |

A warrior was laughing on seeing it, while grinning

ਰੁਕਮਿਨਿ ਜੁਧੁ ਕੋ ਛੋਰ ਕੈ ਤਾ ਪਰ ਚਲਿਯੋ ਹਕਾਰਿ ॥੨੧੭੦॥
rukamin judh ko chhor kai taa par chaliyo hakaar |2170|

Leaving his fighting with Rukmi, Balram challenged him and fell upon him.2170.

SWAYYA

ਸਭ ਤੋਰ ਕੈ ਦਾਤ ਦਏ ਤਿਹ ਕੇ ਬਲਭਦ੍ਰ ਗਦਾ ਸੰਗ ਪੈ ਗਹਿ ਕੈ ॥
sabh tor kai daat de tih ke balabhadr gadaa sang pai geh kai |

Balram, with his mace, broke all his teeth

ਦੋਊ ਮੂਛ ਉਖਾਰ ਲਈ ਤਿਹ ਕੀ ਅਤਿ ਸ੍ਰਉਨ ਚਲਿਯੋ ਤਿਹ ਤੇ ਬਹਿ ਕੈ ॥
doaoo moochh ukhaar lee tih kee at sraun chaliyo tih te beh kai |

He uprooted both of his whiskers and the blood oozed out of them

ਫਿਰਿ ਅਉਰ ਹਨੇ ਬਲਵੰਤ ਘਨੇ ਕਬਿ ਸ੍ਯਾਮ ਕਹੈ ਚਿਤ ਮੈ ਚਹਿ ਕੈ ॥
fir aaur hane balavant ghane kab sayaam kahai chit mai cheh kai |

Then Balram kill many warriors

ਫਿਰਿ ਆਇ ਭਿਰਿਯੋ ਰੁਕਮੀ ਸੰਗ ਯੌ ਤੁਹਿ ਮਾਰਤ ਹਉ ਮੁਖ ਤੇ ਕਹਿ ਕੈ ॥੨੧੭੧॥
fir aae bhiriyo rukamee sang yau tuhi maarat hau mukh te keh kai |2171|

He again began to fight with Rukmi, saying, “I shall kill you.”2171.

ਧਾਵਤ ਭਯੋ ਰੁਕਮੀ ਪੈ ਹਲੀ ਕਬਿ ਸ੍ਯਾਮ ਕਹੈ ਚਿਤਿ ਰੋਸ ਬਢੈ ਕੈ ॥
dhaavat bhayo rukamee pai halee kab sayaam kahai chit ros badtai kai |

Poet Shyam says, Balaram fell down on Rukmi with increasing anger in his heart.

ਰੋਮ ਖਰੇ ਕਰਿ ਕੈ ਅਪੁਨੇ ਪੁਨਿ ਅਉਰ ਪ੍ਰਚੰਡ ਗਦਾ ਕਰਿ ਲੈ ਕੈ ॥
rom khare kar kai apune pun aaur prachandd gadaa kar lai kai |

In great fury, and his hair standing, on their ends, and taking his powerful mace in his hand, Balram fell upon Rukmi

ਆਵਤ ਭਯੋ ਉਤ ਤੇ ਸੋਊ ਬੀਰ ਸੁ ਆਪਸ ਮੈ ਰਨ ਦੁੰਦ ਮਚੈ ਕੈ ॥
aavat bhayo ut te soaoo beer su aapas mai ran dund machai kai |

Another warrior also came forward from the other side and a dreadful fight ensued amongst them

ਹੁਇ ਬਿਸੰਭਾਰ ਪਰੇ ਦੋਊ ਬੀਰ ਧਰਾ ਪਰ ਘਾਇਨ ਕੇ ਸੰਗ ਘੈ ਕੈ ॥੨੧੭੨॥
hue bisanbhaar pare doaoo beer dharaa par ghaaein ke sang ghai kai |2172|

Both the warriors fell down unconscious and wounded amongst the other wounded.2172.

CHAUPAI

ਪਹਰ ਦੋਇ ਤਹ ਜੁਧੁ ਮਚਾਯੋ ॥
pahar doe tah judh machaayo |

They fought a two-hour war.

ਏਕ ਨ ਦੋ ਮੈ ਮਾਰਨ ਪਾਯੋ ॥
ek na do mai maaran paayo |

The battle was fought there for about half the day and none of them could kill the other one

ਬਿਹਬਲ ਹੋਇ ਦੋਊ ਧਰਿ ਪਰੇ ॥
bihabal hoe doaoo dhar pare |

Both fell down on the ground in panic.

ਜੀਵਤ ਬਚੇ ਸੁ ਮਾਨਹੋ ਮਰੇ ॥੨੧੭੩॥
jeevat bache su maanaho mare |2173|

Being greatly agitated, both the warriors fell down upon the earth like the living dead.2173.
