ਸੁਨਤ ਬਚਨ ਕਾਮਾ ਤੁਰਤ ਦਿਜ ਗ੍ਰਿਹ ਲਯੋ ਦੁਰਾਇ ॥
sunat bachan kaamaa turat dij grih layo duraae |Listening to this, Kama hid him in her house,
ਰਾਜਾ ਕੀ ਨਿੰਦ੍ਯਾ ਕਰੀ ਤਾਹਿ ਗਰੇ ਸੋ ਲਾਇ ॥੧੭॥
raajaa kee nindayaa karee taeh gare so laae |17|And she flew into a rage and criticised Raja.(17)

ਧ੍ਰਿਗ ਇਹ ਰਾਇ ਭੇਦ ਨਹਿ ਜਾਨਤ ॥
dhrig ih raae bhed neh jaanat |(She pronounced) ‘Curse be to Raja who did not grasp the secret.
ਤੁਮ ਸੇ ਚਤੁਰਨ ਸੌ ਰਿਸਿ ਠਾਨਤ ॥
tum se chaturan sau ris tthaanat |Became jealous of wise ones like you.
ਮਹਾ ਮੂੜ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਕੋ ਕਾ ਕਹਿਯੈ ॥
mahaa moorr nrip ko kaa kahiyai |‘What can we say about such a blockhead.
ਯਾ ਪਾਪੀ ਕੇ ਦੇਸ ਨ ਰਹਿਯੈ ॥੧੮॥
yaa paapee ke des na rahiyai |18|One should not live in the country of such a vice-man.(l8)

ਚਲੌ ਤ ਏਕੈ ਮਗੁ ਚਲੌ ਰਹੇ ਰਹੌ ਤਿਹ ਗਾਉ ॥
chalau ta ekai mag chalau rahe rahau tih gaau |‘Corne, let us take the same path and live side by side,
ਨਿਸੁ ਦਿਨ ਰਟੌ ਬਿਹੰਗ ਜ੍ਯੋ ਮੀਤ ਤਿਹਾਰੋ ਨਾਉ ॥੧੯॥
nis din rattau bihang jayo meet tihaaro naau |19|‘And I will always remember you and remain with you.’(19)
ਬਿਰਹ ਬਾਨ ਮੋ ਤਨ ਗਡੇ ਕਾ ਸੋ ਕਰੋ ਪੁਕਾਰ ॥
birah baan mo tan gadde kaa so karo pukaar |‘I have been pierced with the arrow of separation, how could I remonstrate?
ਤਨਕ ਅਗਨਿ ਕੋ ਸਿਵ ਭਏ ਜਰੌ ਸੰਭਾਰਿ ਸੰਭਾਰਿ ॥੨੦॥
tanak agan ko siv bhe jarau sanbhaar sanbhaar |20|‘Slowly and steadily, I am scorching in the fire ofthis estrangement.(20)
ਆਜੁ ਸਖੀ ਮੈ ਯੌ ਸੁਨ੍ਯੋ ਪਹੁ ਫਾਟਤ ਪਿਯ ਗੌਨ ॥
aaj sakhee mai yau sunayo pahu faattat piy gauan |‘Oh, rny friends, I have heard that at the day break my lover will go away.
ਪਹੁ ਹਿਯਰੇ ਝਗਰਾ ਪਰਿਯੋ ਪਹਿਲੇ ਫਟਿ ਹੈ ਕੌਨ ॥੨੧॥
pahu hiyare jhagaraa pariyo pahile fatt hai kauan |21|‘The point is who will enact first (his leaving and rising of Sun).(21)

ਹਮ ਕੋ ਬੇਗਿ ਬਿਦਾ ਮੁਖ ਕਹੋ ॥
ham ko beg bidaa mukh kaho |‘You, the pretty one, stay here in bliss and bid me good-bye.
ਹਮਰੋ ਕਛੂ ਤਾਪ ਨਹ ਕਰਿਯਹੁ ॥
hamaro kachhoo taap nah kariyahu |We do not feel any pain (of going).
ਨਿਤ ਰਾਮ ਕੋ ਨਾਮ ਸੰਭਰਿਯਹੁ ॥੨੨॥
nit raam ko naam sanbhariyahu |22|‘Do not be alarmed about me and meditate on god Rama’s name.’(22)

sunat bachan kaamaa tabai bhoom paree murachhaae |Hearing the advice, the lady became unconscious and fell flat on the ground,
ਜਨੁ ਘਾਯਲ ਘਾਇਨ ਲਗੇ ਗਿਰੈ ਉਠੈ ਬਰਰਾਇ ॥੨੩॥
jan ghaayal ghaaein lage girai utthai bararaae |23|Like the injured man, tried to get up but fell down again.(23)

ਅਧਿਕ ਬਿਰਹ ਕੇ ਸੰਗ ਪੀਤ ਬਰਨ ਕਾਮਾ ਭਈ ॥
adhik birah ke sang peet baran kaamaa bhee |In the wake of separation, Kama looked anaemic.
ਰਕਤ ਨ ਰਹਿਯੋ ਅੰਗ ਚਲਿਯੋ ਮੀਤ ਚੁਰਾਇ ਚਿਤ ॥੨੪॥
rakat na rahiyo ang chaliyo meet churaae chit |24|As the paramour had gone after stealing her heart; she looked totally drained.(24)
ਦੋਹਰਾ ॥

ਟਾਕ ਤੋਲ ਤਨ ਨ ਰਹਿਯੋ ਮਾਸਾ ਰਹਿਯੋ ਨ ਮਾਸ ॥
ttaak tol tan na rahiyo maasaa rahiyo na maas |For four months there is no more body and no more flesh than the flesh.
ਬਿਰਹਿਨ ਕੌ ਤੀਨੋ ਭਲੇ ਹਾਡ ਚਾਮ ਅਰੁ ਸ੍ਵਾਸ ॥੨੫॥
birahin kau teeno bhale haadd chaam ar svaas |25|All three (diseases) are good for the bones, skin and breath. 25.
ਅਤਿ ਕਾਮਾ ਲੋਟਤ ਧਰਨਿ ਮਾਧਵਨਲ ਕੇ ਹੇਤ ॥
at kaamaa lottat dharan maadhavanal ke het |The separation of Madhwan made her to roll over on the ground,
ਟੂਟੋ ਅਮਲ ਅਫੀਮਿਯਹਿ ਜਨੁ ਪਸਵਾਰੇ ਲੇਤ ॥੨੬॥
ttootto amal afeemiyeh jan pasavaare let |26|Like an addict of opium, she tossed around in the dust.(26)
ਮਿਲਤ ਨੈਨ ਨਹਿ ਰਹਿ ਸਕਤ ਜਾਨਤ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਪਤੰਗ ॥
milat nain neh reh sakat jaanat preet patang |Kite (Pi with Deepak) can know from Preet that Nain cannot be left without mixing.
ਛੂਟਤ ਬਿਰਹ ਬਿਯੋਗ ਤੇ ਹੋਮਤ ਅਪਨੋ ਅੰਗ ॥੨੭॥
chhoottat birah biyog te homat apano ang |27|He burns his limbs by touching (the lamp) due to disillusionment. 27.

ਬਾਰਿ ਅਨੇਕ ਆਗਿ ਮੈ ਬਰਿਹੌ ॥
baar anek aag mai barihau |‘I will go around the pilgrim places and, again and again, will burn in fire of alienation.
ਕਾਸੀ ਬਿਖੈ ਕਰਵਤਿਹਿ ਪੈਹੌ ॥
kaasee bikhai karavatihi paihau |Chirwawangi with a saw in Kashi.
ਢੂੰਢਿ ਮੀਤ ਤੋ ਕੌ ਤਊ ਲੈਹੌ ॥੨੮॥
dtoondt meet to kau taoo laihau |28|‘I will face the saw at Kanshi but will never rest till I find you.(28)

ਜਹਾ ਪਿਯਰਵਾ ਚਲੇ ਪ੍ਰਾਨ ਤਿਤਹੀ ਚਲੇ ॥
jahaa piyaravaa chale praan titahee chale |‘Where there is love, there is my life.
ਸਕਲ ਸਿਥਿਲ ਭਏ ਅੰਗ ਸੰਗ ਜੈ ਹੈ ਭਲੇ ॥
sakal sithil bhe ang sang jai hai bhale |‘All my body limbs are getting exhausted.
ਮਾਧਵਨਲ ਕੌ ਨਾਮੁ ਮੰਤ੍ਰ ਸੋ ਜਾਨਿਯੈ ॥
maadhavanal kau naam mantr so jaaniyai |‘I need the charm of Madhwan,
ਹੋ ਜਾਤੌ ਲਗਤ ਉਚਾਟ ਸਤਿ ਕਰਿ ਮਾਨਿਯੈ ॥੨੯॥
ho jaatau lagat uchaatt sat kar maaniyai |29|‘As my heart is yearning without him.’(29)

ਜੋ ਤੁਮਰੀ ਬਾਛਾ ਕਰਤ ਪ੍ਰਾਨ ਹਰੈ ਜਮ ਮੋਹਿ ॥
jo tumaree baachhaa karat praan harai jam mohi |‘If the god of death takes out my life in your remembrance,
ਮਰੇ ਪਰਾਤ ਚੁਰੈਲ ਹ੍ਵੈ ਚਮਕਿ ਚਿਤੈਹੌ ਤੋਹਿ ॥੩੦॥
mare paraat churail hvai chamak chitaihau tohi |30|‘I will become witch and keep on roaming and searching for you.(30)
ਬਰੀ ਬਿਰਹ ਕੀ ਆਗਿ ਮੈ ਜਰੀ ਰਖੈ ਹੌ ਨਾਉ ॥
baree birah kee aag mai jaree rakhai hau naau |‘Burning in the fire of passion,
ਭਾਤਿ ਜਰੀ ਕੀ ਬਰੀ ਕੀ ਢਿਗ ਤੇ ਕਬਹੂੰ ਨ ਜਾਉ ॥੩੧॥
bhaat jaree kee baree kee dtig te kabahoon na jaau |31|I will adopt my name as “the burnt one”.(31)
ਸਾਚ ਕਹਤ ਹੈ ਬਿਰਹਨੀ ਰਹੀ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਸੌ ਪਾਗਿ ॥
saach kahat hai birahanee rahee prem sau paag |‘I say truthfully that a disengaged one burns in love,
ਡਰਤ ਬਿਰਹ ਕੀ ਅਗਨਿ ਸੌ ਜਰਤ ਕਾਠ ਕੀ ਆਗਿ ॥੩੨॥
ddarat birah kee agan sau jarat kaatth kee aag |32|‘Exactly like the dry wood blazes with crackling sounds.’(32)
ਤਬ ਮਾਧਵਨਲ ਉਠਿ ਚਲਿਯੋ ਭਯੋ ਪਵਨ ਕੋ ਭੇਸ ॥
tab maadhavanal utth chaliyo bhayo pavan ko bhes |In the meantime, Madhwan had flown away like air,
ਜਸ ਧੁਨਿ ਸੁਨਿ ਸਿਰ ਧੁਨਿ ਗਯੋ ਬਿਕ੍ਰਮ ਜਹਾ ਨਰੇਸ ॥੩੩॥
jas dhun sun sir dhun gayo bikram jahaa nares |33|And reached there where the reverend Bikrimajeet used to sit.(33)

ਬਿਕ੍ਰਮ ਜਹਾ ਨਿਤਿ ਚਲਿ ਆਵੈ ॥
bikram jahaa nit chal aavai |Where Bikramajit used to walk every day
ਪੂਜਿ ਗੌਰਜਾ ਕੌ ਗ੍ਰਿਹ ਜਾਵੈ ॥
pooj gauarajaa kau grih jaavai |Bikrim used to visit the place and perform prayers to goddess gory.
ਮੰਦਿਰ ਊਚ ਧੁਜਾ ਫਹਰਾਹੀ ॥
mandir aooch dhujaa faharaahee |High flags were flying on the temple.
ਫਟਕਾਚਲ ਲਖਿ ਤਾਹਿ ਲਜਾਹੀ ॥੩੪॥
fattakaachal lakh taeh lajaahee |34|The temple was lofty and its grace was unsurpassable.(34)
ਦੋਹਰਾ ॥

ਤਿਹੀ ਠੌਰਿ ਮਾਧਵ ਗਯੋ ਦੋਹਾ ਲਿਖ੍ਯੋ ਬਨਾਇ ॥
tihee tthauar maadhav gayo dohaa likhayo banaae |Madhwan went there and wrote a couplet at the place,
ਜੌ ਬਿਕ੍ਰਮ ਇਹ ਬਾਚਿ ਹੈ ਹ੍ਵੈ ਹੋ ਮੋਰ ਉਪਾਇ ॥੩੫॥
jau bikram ih baach hai hvai ho mor upaae |35|(Thinking) ‘When Bikrim reads it he will suggest some resolve for me.‘(35)
ਜੇ ਨਰ ਰੋਗਨ ਸੌ ਗ੍ਰਸੇ ਤਿਨ ਕੋ ਹੋਤ ਉਪਾਉ ॥
je nar rogan sau grase tin ko hot upaau |If a person is sick he can be suggested some remedy,
ਬਿਰਹ ਤ੍ਰਿਦੋਖਨ ਜੇ ਗ੍ਰਸੇ ਤਿਨ ਕੋ ਕਛੁ ਨ ਬਚਾਉ ॥੩੬॥
birah tridokhan je grase tin ko kachh na bachaau |36|But for a person who is suffering from love-sickness, there is no sanctuary.(36)

bikram sain tahaa chal aayo |King Bikramajit walked there.
ਆਨ ਗੌਰਜਾ ਕੌ ਸਿਰ ਨ੍ਯਾਯੋ ॥
aan gauarajaa kau sir nayaayo |Bikrim came there in the evening and paid his obeisance to the goddess Gory,
ਬਾਚਿ ਦੋਹਰਾ ਕੋ ਚਕਿ ਰਹਿਯੋ ॥
baach doharaa ko chak rahiyo |He was surprised to read the double
ਕੋ ਬਿਰਹੀ ਆਯੋ ਹ੍ਯਾਂ ਕਹਿਯੋ ॥੩੭॥
ko birahee aayo hayaan kahiyo |37|He read the couplet and inquired if there had come some love-sick person.(37)

ਕੋ ਬਿਰਹੀ ਆਯੋ ਹ੍ਯਾਂ ਤਾ ਕੌ ਲੇਹੁ ਬੁਲਾਇ ॥
ko birahee aayo hayaan taa kau lehu bulaae |(She pronounced) ‘The one who is love-sick, has come here, call
ਜੋ ਵਹੁ ਕਹੈ ਸੋ ਹੌ ਕਰੌ ਤਾ ਕੌ ਜਿਯਨ ਉਪਾਇ ॥੩੮॥
jo vahu kahai so hau karau taa kau jiyan upaae |38|Him. ‘Whatever he desires, I will fulfi1.’(38)
