Dohira

ਜੋ ਹੌ ਕਛੂ ਮੁਹੰਮਦਹਿ ਮੁਖ ਤੈ ਕਾਢੋ ਗਾਰਿ ॥
jo hau kachhoo muhamadeh mukh tai kaadto gaar |

‘Had we committed perjury against the prophet,

ਤੋ ਮੈ ਆਪਨ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਮਰੋ ਕਟਾਰੀ ਮਾਰਿ ॥੭॥
to mai aapan aap hee maro kattaaree maar |7|

We would have killed ourselves with daggers too.(7)

ਤੈ ਨਹਿ ਕਛੂ ਨਬੀ ਕੋ ਕਹਿਯੋ ॥
tai neh kachhoo nabee ko kahiyo |

(The children said) You did not say anything to Nabi.

ਧਨ ਕੇ ਹੇਤ ਤੋਹਿ ਹਮ ਗਹਿਯੋ ॥
dhan ke het tohi ham gahiyo |

‘You have not said anything against the Prophet, we have devised this to squeeze your money.

ਅਧਿਕ ਦਰਬੁ ਅਬ ਹੀ ਮੁਹਿ ਦੀਜੈ ॥
adhik darab ab hee muhi deejai |

Give us a lot of money now,

ਨਾਤਰ ਮੀਚ ਮੂੰਡਿ ਪੈ ਲੀਜੈ ॥੮॥
naatar meech moondd pai leejai |8|

‘Now give us lot of wealth otherwise we will kill you.’(8)

ਹਮ ਬਹੁ ਲੋਗ ਪਿਸੌਰ ਕੇ ਇਨੀ ਤੁਹਮਤਨ ਸਾਥ ॥
ham bahu log pisauar ke inee tuhamatan saath |

‘We have already blamed like this many people in the city of Peshawar,

ਧਨੀ ਕਰੈ ਨਿਧਨੀ ਘਨੇ ਹ੍ਵੈ ਹ੍ਵੈ ਗਏ ਅਨਾਥ ॥੯॥
dhanee karai nidhanee ghane hvai hvai ge anaath |9|

‘And turned them into paupers.’(9)

Chaupaee

ਯੌ ਸੁਨਿ ਬਚਨ ਪਯਾਦਨੁ ਪਾਯੋ ॥
yau sun bachan payaadan paayo |

(When) the pawns heard these words,

ਵੇਈ ਸਭ ਝੂਠੇ ਠਹਿਰਾਯੋ ॥
veee sabh jhootthe tthahiraayo |

The spies, who were listening to all that, labelled them as liars.

ਗ੍ਰਿਹ ਤੇ ਨਿਕਸਿ ਤਿਨੈ ਗਹਿ ਲੀਨੋ ॥
grih te nikas tinai geh leeno |

He took them out of the house and caught them

ਸਭਹਿਨ ਕੀ ਮੁਸਕੈ ਕਸਿ ਦੀਨੋ ॥੧੦॥
sabhahin kee musakai kas deeno |10|

They took them out of the house and tied them up.(10)

Dohira

ਲਾਤ ਮੁਸਟ ਕੁਰਰੇ ਘਨੇ ਬਰਸੀ ਪਨ੍ਰਹੀ ਅਪਾਰ ॥
laat musatt kurare ghane barasee panrahee apaar |

They were beaten with fists and shoes,

ਦੈ ਮੁਸਕਨ ਕੌ ਲੈ ਚਲੇ ਹੇਰਤੁ ਲੋਕ ਹਜਾਰ ॥੧੧॥
dai musakan kau lai chale herat lok hajaar |11|

And, tied up, they were taken out in the streets.(11)

Chaupaee

ਤਿਨ ਕੋ ਬਾਧਿ ਲੈ ਗਏ ਤਹਾ ॥
tin ko baadh lai ge tahaa |

They tied them and took them there

ਖਾਨ ਮੁਹਬਤਿ ਬੈਠੋ ਜਹਾ ॥
khaan muhabat baittho jahaa |

They dragged them to the place where Mohabat Khan was seated.

ਪਨਹਿਨ ਮਾਰਿ ਨਵਾਬ ਦਿਲਾਈ ॥
panahin maar navaab dilaaee |

The Nawab demanded shoes (from that woman also).

ਤੋਬਹ ਤੋਬਹ ਕਰੈ ਖੁਦਾਈ ॥੧੨॥
tobah tobah karai khudaaee |12|

Through the woman, Khan got them beaten and then they expressed their regrets.(l2)

ਪਨਹਿਨ ਕੇ ਮਾਰਤ ਮਰਿ ਗਏ ॥
panahin ke maarat mar ge |

They died with the blow of shoes.

ਤਬ ਵੈ ਡਾਰਿ ਨਦੀ ਮੈ ਦਏ ॥
tab vai ddaar nadee mai de |

They died through the beatings with the shoes and were thrown into the stream.

ਚੁਪ ਹ੍ਵੈ ਰਹੇ ਤੁਰਕ ਸਭ ਸੋਊ ॥
chup hvai rahe turak sabh soaoo |

All the Turks fell silent on this.

ਤਬ ਤੇ ਤੁਹਮਤਿ ਦੇਤ ਨ ਕੋਊ ॥੧੩॥
tab te tuhamat det na koaoo |13|

This made all the Muslims to become peaceful and no body was ever set with the blame.(13)

ਤਬ ਤਿਨ ਬਿਪ ਬੁਲਾਇ ਕੈ ਦੀਨੋ ਦਾਨ ਅਪਾਰ ॥
tab tin bip bulaae kai deeno daan apaar |

Then she invited the Brahmin Priests and showered with bounty.

ਛਲ ਕੈ ਕੈ ਜੂਤਿਨ ਭਏ ਬੀਸ ਖੁਦਾਈ ਮਾਰ ॥੧੪॥
chhal kai kai jootin bhe bees khudaaee maar |14|

Through such an Chritar the woman got Muslim priests beaten with shoes.(14)

ਚੁਪ ਤਬ ਤੇ ਹ੍ਵੈ ਰਹੇ ਖੁਦਾਈ ॥
chup tab te hvai rahe khudaaee |

Since then, Mullane has been silent.

ਕਾਹੂ ਸਾਥ ਨ ਰਾਰਿ ਬਢਾਈ ॥
kaahoo saath na raar badtaaee |

Since then the Muslim priests attained patience and never indulged in bickering.

ਸੋਈ ਕਰੈ ਜੁ ਹਿੰਦੂ ਕਹੈ ॥
soee karai ju hindoo kahai |

They used to do what the Hindus said

ਤੁਹਮਤਿ ਦੈ ਕਾਹੂੰ ਨ ਗਹੈ ॥੧੫॥
tuhamat dai kaahoon na gahai |15|

They performed according to the wishes of the Hindus and never blamed any body falsely.(l5)(1)

ਰੋਪਰ ਰਾਵ ਰੁਪੇਸ੍ਵਰ ਭਾਰੋ ॥
ropar raav rupesvar bhaaro |

There was a great king named Rupeshwar in Ropar Nagar.

ਰਘੁਕੁਲ ਬੀਚ ਅਧਿਕ ਉਜਿਯਾਰੋ ॥
raghukul beech adhik ujiyaaro |

In the city of Ropar, there lived a magnanimous Raja called

ਚਿਤ੍ਰ ਕੁਅਰਿ ਰਾਨੀ ਇਕ ਤਾ ਕੇ ॥
chitr kuar raanee ik taa ke |

In his house there was a queen named Chitra Kuari.

ਰੂਪਵਤੀ ਕੋਊ ਤੁਲਿ ਨ ਵਾ ਕੇ ॥੧॥
roopavatee koaoo tul na vaa ke |1|

Roopeshwar. Chittar Kunwar was one of his Ranis; there was none as beautiful as she in the world.(1)

ਦਾਨਵ ਏਕ ਲੰਕ ਤੇ ਆਯੋ ॥
daanav ek lank te aayo |

A giant came from Lanka

ਤਾ ਕੋ ਰੂਪਿ ਹੇਰਿ ਉਰਝਾਯੋ ॥
taa ko roop her urajhaayo |

A Devil came from (the country of) Lanka, who was enchanted with her beauty,

ਮਨ ਮੈ ਅਧਿਕ ਰੀਝਿ ਕਰਿ ਗਯੋ ॥
man mai adhik reejh kar gayo |

He became very happy in his mind.

ਤਾ ਕੋ ਲਗਾ ਨ ਤਜਿ ਤਹਿ ਦਯੋ ॥੨॥
taa ko lagaa na taj teh dayo |2|

He fell for her and he felt that he would not survive without her.(2)

ਤਬ ਤਿਨ ਮੰਤ੍ਰੀ ਅਧਿਕ ਬੁਲਾਏ ॥
tab tin mantree adhik bulaae |

Then he called many ministers

ਅਨਿਕ ਭਾਤਿ ਉਪਚਾਰ ਕਰਾਏ ॥
anik bhaat upachaar karaae |

He called a number of mendicants and got them to perform some charms.

ਤਹਾ ਏਕ ਮੁਲਾ ਚਲਿ ਆਯੋ ॥
tahaa ek mulaa chal aayo |

A Mullah walked there.

ਆਨਿ ਆਪਨਾ ਓਜੁ ਜਨਾਯੋ ॥੩॥
aan aapanaa oj janaayo |3|

A Maulana (Muslim priest) came there too and performed some incantation.(3)

ਤਬ ਤਿਨ ਘਾਤ ਦਾਨਵਹਿ ਪਾਯੋ ॥
tab tin ghaat daanaveh paayo |

Then the giant got an opportunity.

ਏਕ ਹਾਥ ਸੌ ਮਹਲ ਉਚਾਯੋ ॥
ek haath sau mahal uchaayo |

When the Devil got an opportunity, he picked the palace on his one

ਦੁਤਿਯ ਹਾਥ ਤਾ ਕੌ ਗਹਿ ਲੀਨੋ ॥
dutiy haath taa kau geh leeno |

And with the other hand caught him (Mulla).

ਤਵਨ ਛਾਤ ਭੀਤਰ ਧਰਿ ਦੀਨੋ ॥੪॥
tavan chhaat bheetar dhar deeno |4|

Hand and with the other he pushed him (Maulana) in.( 4)

Dohira

ਧਰਿਯੋ ਥੰਭ ਊਪਰ ਤਿਸੈ ਇਕ ਕਰ ਛਾਤ ਉਠਾਇ ॥
dhariyo thanbh aoopar tisai ik kar chhaat utthaae |

He pushed the ceiling up and put him on top of one pillar,

ਮਾਰਿ ਮੁਲਾਨਾ ਕੋ ਦਯੋ ਜਮ ਕੇ ਧਾਮ ਪਠਾਇ ॥੫॥
maar mulaanaa ko dayo jam ke dhaam patthaae |5|

And thus killed Maulana and despatched him to the domain of death.(5)

ਤਹ ਇਕ ਔਰ ਮੁਲਾਨੋ ਆਯੋ ॥
tah ik aauar mulaano aayo |

Then another boy came there.

ਸੋਊ ਪਕਰਿ ਟਾਗ ਪਟਕਾਯੋ ॥
soaoo pakar ttaag pattakaayo |

Then came another Maulana. Holding him through his legs he struck him down.

ਤੀਜੌ ਔਰ ਆਇ ਤਹ ਗਯੋ ॥
teejau aauar aae tah gayo |

(Then) another third Mulana came.

ਸੋਊ ਡਾਰਿ ਨਦੀ ਮੈ ਦਯੋ ॥੬॥
soaoo ddaar nadee mai dayo |6|

The third one came too, which he threw in the river.(6)

ਤਬਿ ਇਕ ਤ੍ਰਿਯਾ ਤਹਾ ਚਲਿ ਆਈ ॥
tab ik triyaa tahaa chal aaee |

Then a woman came walking there.

ਭਾਤਿ ਭਾਤਿ ਤਿਹ ਕਰੀ ਬਡਾਈ ॥
bhaat bhaat tih karee baddaaee |

A woman came there and repeatedly praised him.

ਲੇਹਜ ਪੇਹਜ ਬਹੁ ਤਾਹਿ ਖਵਾਯੋ ॥
lehaj pehaj bahu taeh khavaayo |

He (the giant) was given various kinds of food

ਮਦਰੋ ਪ੍ਰਯਾਇ ਤਾਹਿ ਰਿਝਵਾਯੋ ॥੭॥
madaro prayaae taeh rijhavaayo |7|

With dainty food and wine she appeased the Devil.(7)

ਤਾ ਕੇ ਨਿਤਿ ਬੁਹਾਰੀ ਦੇਵੈ ॥
taa ke nit buhaaree devai |

At her (home) she used to give daily dowries

ਤਾ ਕੋ ਚਿਤ ਚੁਰਾਇ ਕੈ ਲੇਵੈ ॥
taa ko chit churaae kai levai |

She would come there for sweeping every day and comfort him.

ਇਕ ਦਿਨ ਹੋਇ ਬਿਮਨ ਸੀ ਰਹੀ ॥
eik din hoe biman see rahee |

One day, Bemani sat down.

ਤਬ ਐਸੇ ਦਾਨੋ ਤਿਹ ਕਹੀ ॥੮॥
tab aaise daano tih kahee |8|

One day when she was sitting depressed, the devil inquired.(8)

ਖਾਤ ਪੀਤ ਹਮਰੋ ਤੂੰ ਨਾਹੀ ॥
khaat peet hamaro toon naahee |

You do not eat or drink anything from us

ਸੇਵਾ ਕਰਤ ਰਹਤ ਗ੍ਰਿਹ ਮਾਹੀ ॥
sevaa karat rahat grih maahee |

‘In our house, you do not eat or drink and just keep on serving us.
