ਅਰੁ ਭਾਤਿ ਭਾਤਿ ਉਠਿ ਪਰਤ ਚਰਨਿ ॥
ar bhaat bhaat utth parat charan |

And got up and fell on his feet

ਜਾਨੀ ਨ ਜਾਇ ਜਿਹ ਜਾਤਿ ਬਰਨ ॥੧੦੧॥
jaanee na jaae jih jaat baran |101|

Then he touched the feet of that castless and colorless lord in in various ways.101.

ਜਉ ਕਰੈ ਕ੍ਰਿਤ ਕਈ ਜੁਗ ਉਚਾਰ ॥
jau karai krit kee jug uchaar |

If one chants (His) glory for many ages,

ਨਹੀ ਤਦਿਪ ਤਾਸੁ ਲਹਿ ਜਾਤ ਪਾਰ ॥
nahee tadip taas leh jaat paar |

If one utter His praises for several ages, even then he cannot understand His mystery

ਮਮ ਅਲਪ ਬੁਧਿ ਤਵ ਗੁਨ ਅਨੰਤ ॥
mam alap budh tav gun anant |

My intelligence is small and your virtues are infinite.

ਬਰਨਾ ਨ ਜਾਤ ਤੁਮ ਅਤਿ ਬਿਅੰਤ ॥੧੦੨॥
baranaa na jaat tum at biant |102|

"O Lord! My intellect is very low and I cannot describe Thy Vastness.102.

ਤਵ ਗੁਣ ਅਤਿ ਊਚ ਅੰਬਰ ਸਮਾਨ ॥
tav gun at aooch anbar samaan |

Your qualities are as high as the sky,

ਮਮ ਅਲਪ ਬੁਧਿ ਬਾਲਕ ਅਜਾਨ ॥
mam alap budh baalak ajaan |

“Thy attributes are Great like the sky and my wisdom is very low like that of a child

ਕਿਮ ਸਕੌ ਬਰਨ ਤੁਮਰੇ ਪ੍ਰਭਾਵ ॥
kim sakau baran tumare prabhaav |

How can I describe your influence?

ਤਵ ਪਰਾ ਸਰਣਿ ਤਜਿ ਸਭ ਉਪਾਵ ॥੧੦੩॥
tav paraa saran taj sabh upaav |103|

How can I describe the Glory? Therefore leaving all the measures, I have come under Thy Refuge.”103.

ਜਿਹ ਲਖਤ ਚਤ੍ਰ ਨਹਿ ਭੇਦ ਬੇਦ ॥
jih lakhat chatr neh bhed bed |

Whose secrets cannot be understood by all the Vedas.

ਆਭਾ ਅਨੰਤ ਮਹਿਮਾ ਅਛੇਦ ॥
aabhaa anant mahimaa achhed |

His mystery cannot be known to all the four Vedas His Glory is infinite and supreme

ਗੁਨ ਗਨਤ ਚਤ੍ਰਮੁਖ ਪਰਾ ਹਾਰ ॥
gun ganat chatramukh paraa haar |

Considering (whose) qualities Brahma was defeated,

ਤਬ ਨੇਤਿ ਨੇਤਿ ਕਿਨੋ ਉਚਾਰ ॥੧੦੪॥
tab net net kino uchaar |104|

Brahma also got tired in praising Him and is uttering Him Greatness only by the words “Neti, Neti” (not this, not this).104.

ਥਕਿ ਗਿਰਿਓ ਬ੍ਰਿਧ ਸਿਰ ਲਿਖਤ ਕਿਤ ॥
thak girio bridh sir likhat kit |

While writing (whose) glory the old man (Brahma) fell down on his head in exhaustion.

ਚਕਿ ਰਹੇ ਬਾਲਿਖਿਲਾਦਿ ਚਿਤ ॥
chak rahe baalikhilaad chit |

Ganesha also gets tired in writing His Praises and all of them, feeling His Omnipresence, get wonder-struck

ਗੁਨ ਗਨਤ ਚਤ੍ਰਮੁਖ ਹਾਰ ਮਾਨਿ ॥
gun ganat chatramukh haar maan |

Considering the qualities, Brahma has given up.

ਹਠਿ ਤਜਿ ਬਿਅੰਤਿ ਕਿਨੋ ਬਖਾਨ ॥੧੦੫॥
hatth taj biant kino bakhaan |105|

Brahma also accepted defet, while singing His Praises and forsaking his persistence by describing Him only as infinite.105.

ਤਹ ਜਪਤ ਰੁਦ੍ਰ ਜੁਗ ਕੋਟਿ ਭੀਤ ॥
tah japat rudr jug kott bheet |

Rudra has spent crores of yugas worshiping her.

ਬਹਿ ਗਈ ਗੰਗ ਸਿਰ ਮੁਰਿ ਨ ਚੀਤ ॥
beh gee gang sir mur na cheet |

Rudra is remembering Him for millions of ages the Ganges is flowing from the head of that Rudra

ਕਈ ਕਲਪ ਬੀਤ ਜਿਹ ਧਰਤਿ ਧਿਆਨ ॥
kee kalap beet jih dharat dhiaan |

Many kalpas (of the seekers) have passed in his attention,

ਨਹੀ ਤਦਿਪ ਧਿਆਨ ਆਏ ਸੁਜਾਨ ॥੧੦੬॥
nahee tadip dhiaan aae sujaan |106|

He is not bound down within the meditation of sagacious individuals, even on meditating Him for many Kalpas (ages).106.

ਜਬ ਕੀਨ ਨਾਲਿ ਬ੍ਰਹਮਾ ਪ੍ਰਵੇਸ ॥
jab keen naal brahamaa praves |

When Brahma entered the lotus pond,

ਮੁਨ ਮਨਿ ਮਹਾਨ ਦਿਜਬਰ ਦਿਜੇਸ ॥
mun man mahaan dijabar dijes |

Who is the great contemplative sage and lord of the best brahmanas,

ਨਹੀ ਕਮਲ ਨਾਲ ਕੋ ਲਖਾ ਪਾਰ ॥
nahee kamal naal ko lakhaa paar |

He did not know the other side of the lotus,

ਕਹੋ ਤਾਸੁ ਕੈਸ ਪਾਵੈ ਬਿਚਾਰ ॥੧੦੭॥
kaho taas kais paavai bichaar |107|

When Brahma, who is superb amongst the great sages, entered the lotus-stalk, he could not even know the end of that lotus-stalk, then how can our power of reflection and wisdom realise Him?107.

ਬਰਨੀ ਨ ਜਾਤਿ ਜਿਹ ਛਬਿ ਸੁਰੰਗ ॥
baranee na jaat jih chhab surang |

whose beautiful image cannot be described.

ਆਭਾ ਆਪਾਰ ਮਹਿਮਾ ਅਭੰਗ ॥
aabhaa aapaar mahimaa abhang |

He, whose elegant comeliness cannot be described, His Greatness and Glory is infinite

ਜਿਹ ਏਕ ਰੂਪ ਕਿਨੋ ਅਨੇਕ ॥
jih ek roop kino anek |

The One who has taken many forms,

ਪਗ ਛੋਰਿ ਆਨ ਤਿਹ ਧਰੋ ਟੇਕ ॥੧੦੮॥
pag chhor aan tih dharo ttek |108|

He, was has manifested Himself in more than one forms meditate only on His Feet.108.

ROOAAL STANZA

ਭਾਤਿ ਭਾਤਿ ਬਿਅੰਤਿ ਦੇਸ ਭਵੰਤ ਕਿਰਤ ਉਚਾਰ ॥
bhaat bhaat biant des bhavant kirat uchaar |

Atri Muni's son (Datta) roamed the endless lands of Bhant Bhant singing the praises of the Lord.

ਭਾਤਿ ਭਾਤਿ ਪਗੋ ਲਗਾ ਤਜਿ ਗਰਬ ਅਤ੍ਰਿ ਕੁਮਾਰ ॥
bhaat bhaat pago lagaa taj garab atr kumaar |

Touching the feet of various sages and forsaking his pride, Dutt, the son of Atri, began to wander in various countries

ਕੋਟਿ ਬਰਖ ਕਰੀ ਜਬੈ ਹਰਿ ਸੇਵਿ ਵਾ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਇ ॥
kott barakh karee jabai har sev vaa chit laae |

He served Hari for crores of years by planting Jad Chit.

ਅਕਸਮਾਤ ਭਈ ਤਬੈ ਤਿਹ ਬਿਓਮ ਬਾਨ ਬਨਾਇ ॥੧੦੯॥
akasamaat bhee tabai tih biom baan banaae |109|

When, for lakhs of years, he served the Lord single-mindedly, then suddenly, a voice came from heaven.109.

ਬ੍ਯੋਮ ਬਾਨੀ ਬਾਚ ਦਤ ਪ੍ਰਤਿ ॥
bayom baanee baach dat prat |

(Now begins the description of adopting the Immortal Lord as the First Guru) Speech of heavenly voice addressed to Dutt :

ਦਤ ਸਤਿ ਕਹੋ ਤੁਝੈ ਗੁਰ ਹੀਣ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨ ਹੋਇ ॥
dat sat kaho tujhai gur heen mukat na hoe |

O Dutt! I tell you the truth, there will be no salvation without a Guru.

ਰਾਵ ਰੰਕ ਪ੍ਰਜਾ ਵਜਾ ਇਮ ਭਾਖਈ ਸਭ ਕੋਇ ॥
raav rank prajaa vajaa im bhaakhee sabh koe |

“O Dutt! I am telling you the truth that none out of the people, the king, the poor and others, gets salvation without the Guru

ਕੋਟਿ ਕਸਟ ਨ ਕਿਉ ਕਰੋ ਨਹੀ ਐਸ ਦੇਹਿ ਉਧਾਰ ॥
kott kasatt na kiau karo nahee aais dehi udhaar |

Why do you suffer crores, the body will not be saved in this way.

ਜਾਇ ਕੈ ਗੁਰ ਕੀਜੀਐ ਸੁਨਿ ਸਤਿ ਅਤ੍ਰਿ ਕੁਮਾਰ ॥੧੧੦॥
jaae kai gur keejeeai sun sat atr kumaar |110|

“You may suffer millions of tribulations, but this body will not be redeemed, therefore, O the son of Atri, you may adopt a Guru.”110.

Speech of Dutt :

ਰੂਆਲ ਛੰਦ ॥
rooaal chhand |

ROOAAL STANZA

ਐਸ ਬਾਕ ਭਏ ਜਬੈ ਤਬ ਦਤ ਸਤ ਸਰੂਪ ॥
aais baak bhe jabai tab dat sat saroop |

When this kind of sky was spoken, then Datta, who is Sat Sarup,

ਸਿੰਧੁ ਸੀਲ ਸੁਬ੍ਰਿਤ ਕੋ ਨਦ ਗ੍ਯਾਨ ਕੋ ਜਨੁ ਕੂਪ ॥
sindh seel subrit ko nad gayaan ko jan koop |

When this voice of heaven was heard, then Dutt, store of good qualities and knowledge and ocean of gentleness prostrating on the feet of the Lord, said,

ਪਾਨ ਲਾਗ ਡੰਡੌਤਿ ਕੈ ਇਹ ਭਾਤਿ ਕੀਨ ਉਚਾਰ ॥
paan laag ddanddauat kai ih bhaat keen uchaar |

He got on his feet and began to speak like this

ਕਉਨ ਸੋ ਗੁਰ ਕੀਜੀਐ ਕਹਿ ਮੋਹਿ ਤਤ ਬਿਚਾਰ ॥੧੧੧॥
kaun so gur keejeeai keh mohi tat bichaar |111|

“O Lord! kindly give me the crux of the matter as to whom I should adopt my Guru?”111.

ਬ੍ਯੋਮ ਬਾਨੀ ਬਾਚ ॥
bayom baanee baach |

Speech of the heavenly voice :

ਜਉਨ ਚਿਤ ਬਿਖੈ ਰੁਚੈ ਸੋਈ ਕੀਜੀਐ ਗੁਰਦੇਵ ॥
jaun chit bikhai ruchai soee keejeeai guradev |

One who pleases Chit should become Guru.
