ਜੀਵ ਮਨੁਛ ਜਰੋ ਤ੍ਰਿਨ ਜਬੈ ॥
jeev manuchh jaro trin jabai |

When the creatures, man and grass were burnt,

ਸੰਕਾ ਕਰਤ ਭਏ ਭਟ ਤਬੈ ॥
sankaa karat bhe bhatt tabai |

Then all the warriors (in mind) began to do samsa.

ਮਿਲਿ ਸਭ ਹੀ ਜਦੁਪਤਿ ਪਹਿ ਆਏ ॥
mil sabh hee jadupat peh aae |

All together came to Sri Krishna

ਦੀਨ ਭਾਤਿ ਹੁਇ ਅਤਿ ਘਿਘਿਆਏ ॥੧੯੩੫॥
deen bhaat hue at ghighiaae |1935|

When the beings and straws began burning, then all the Yadava warriors in great suspense came to Krishna and began to relate their sufferings while crying.1935.

ਸਭ ਜਾਦੋ ਬਾਚ ॥

CHAUPAI

ਪ੍ਰਭ ਜੂ ਹਮਰੀ ਰਛਾ ਕੀਜੈ ॥
prabh joo hamaree rachhaa keejai |

O Lord! protect us

ਜੀਵ ਰਾਖ ਇਨ ਸਭ ਕੋ ਲੀਜੈ ॥
jeev raakh in sabh ko leejai |

“O Lord! protect us and save all these beings

ਆਪਹਿ ਕੋਊ ਉਪਾਵ ਬਤਈਯੈ ॥
aapeh koaoo upaav bateeyai |

Give me a solution yourself.

ਕੈ ਭਜੀਐ ਕੈ ਜੂਝ ਮਰਈਯੈ ॥੧੯੩੬॥
kai bhajeeai kai joojh mareeyai |1936|

Tell us some remedy, so that either we may die fighting or run away.1936.

SWAYYA

ਤਿਨ ਕੀ ਬਤੀਯਾ ਸੁਨਿ ਕੈ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਜੂ ਗਿਰਿ ਕਉ ਸੰਗਿ ਪਾਇਨ ਕੇ ਮਸਕਿਯੋ ॥
tin kee bateeyaa sun kai prabh joo gir kau sang paaein ke masakiyo |

After hearing their words, Krishna ji crushed the mountain with his feet.

ਨ ਸਕਿਯੋ ਸਹ ਭਾਰ ਸੁ ਤਾ ਪਗ ਕੋ ਕਬਿ ਸ੍ਯਾਮ ਭਨੈ ਜਲ ਲਉ ਧਸਕਿਯੋ ॥
n sakiyo sah bhaar su taa pag ko kab sayaam bhanai jal lau dhasakiyo |

Hearing their talk, the Lord pressed the mountain with his feet, and the mountain could not endure his weight and sank below like water

ਉਸਕਿਯੋ ਗਿਰਿ ਊਰਧ ਕੋ ਧਸਿ ਕੈ ਕੋਊ ਪਾਵਕ ਜੀਵ ਜਰਾ ਨ ਸਕਿਯੋ ॥
ausakiyo gir aooradh ko dhas kai koaoo paavak jeev jaraa na sakiyo |

After sinking below, the mountain rose higher and in this way, the fire could not burn anyone

ਜਦੁਬੀਰ ਹਲੀ ਤਿਹ ਸੈਨ ਮੈ ਕੂਦਿ ਪਰੇ ਨ ਹਿਯਾ ਤਿਨ ਕੌ ਕਸਿਕਿਯੋ ॥੧੯੩੭॥
jadubeer halee tih sain mai kood pare na hiyaa tin kau kasikiyo |1937|

At the same time, Krishna and Balram jumped silently into the enemy’s army.1937.

ਏਕਹਿ ਹਾਥਿ ਗਦਾ ਗਹਿ ਸ੍ਯਾਮ ਜੂ ਭੂਪਤਿ ਕੇ ਬਹੁਤੇ ਭਟ ਮਾਰੇ ॥
ekeh haath gadaa geh sayaam joo bhoopat ke bahute bhatt maare |

Holding his mace in his hand, Krishna killed many warriors of the king

ਅਉਰ ਘਨੇ ਅਸਵਾਰ ਹਨੇ ਬਿਨੁ ਪ੍ਰਾਨ ਘਨੇ ਗਜਿ ਕੈ ਭੁਇ ਪਾਰੇ ॥
aaur ghane asavaar hane bin praan ghane gaj kai bhue paare |

He killed many horsemen and knocked them on the ground

ਪਾਇਨ ਪੰਤ ਹਨੇ ਅਗਨੇ ਰਥ ਤੋਰਿ ਰਥੀ ਬਿਰਥੀ ਕਰਿ ਡਾਰੇ ॥
paaein pant hane agane rath tor rathee birathee kar ddaare |

He destroyed the ranks of soldiers on foot and deprived the chariot-riders of their chariots

ਜੀਤ ਭਈ ਜਦੁਬੀਰ ਕੀ ਯੋ ਕਬਿ ਸ੍ਯਾਮ ਕਹੈ ਸਭ ਯੋ ਅਰਿ ਹਾਰੇ ॥੧੯੩੮॥
jeet bhee jadubeer kee yo kab sayaam kahai sabh yo ar haare |1938|

In this way, killing all the warriors, Krishna became victorious and the enemy was defeated.1938.

ਜੋ ਭਟ ਸ੍ਯਾਮ ਸੋ ਜੂਝ ਕੋ ਆਵਤ ਜੂਝਤ ਹੈ ਸੁ ਲਗੇ ਭਟ ਭੀਰ ਨ ॥
jo bhatt sayaam so joojh ko aavat joojhat hai su lage bhatt bheer na |

The warriors who came to fight with Krishna, they fought with extreme zest

ਸ੍ਰੀ ਬ੍ਰਿਜਨਾਥ ਕੇ ਤੇਜ ਕੇ ਅਗ੍ਰ ਕਹੈ ਕਬਿ ਸ੍ਯਾਮ ਧਰੈ ਕੋਊ ਧੀਰ ਨ ॥
sree brijanaath ke tej ke agr kahai kab sayaam dharai koaoo dheer na |

The poet Shyam says that before the strength of Krishna. No warrior can hold patience.

ਭੂਪਤਿ ਦੇਖ ਦਸਾ ਤਿਨ ਕੀ ਸੁ ਕਹਿਓ ਇਹ ਭਾਤਿ ਭਯੋ ਅਤਿ ਹੀ ਰਨ ॥
bhoopat dekh dasaa tin kee su kahio ih bhaat bhayo at hee ran |

Seeing their condition, the king (Ugrasain) said that a very heavy war was going on.

ਮਾਨੋ ਤੰਬੋਲੀ ਹੀ ਕੀ ਸਮ ਹ੍ਵੈ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਫੇਰਤ ਪਾਨਨ ਕੀ ਜਿਮ ਬੀਰਨਿ ॥੧੯੩੯॥
maano tanbolee hee kee sam hvai nrip ferat paanan kee jim beeran |1939|

Seeing the plight of the warriors in the war-arena, the king Uggarsain said, “The king Jarasandh is like betel, who is destroying his army like the chewing of the betel.1939.

ਇਤ ਕੋਪ ਗਦਾ ਗਹਿ ਕੈ ਮੁਸਲੀਧਰ ਸਤ੍ਰਨ ਸੈਨ ਭਲੇ ਝਕਝੋਰਿਯੋ ॥
eit kop gadaa geh kai musaleedhar satran sain bhale jhakajhoriyo |

Enraged by this, Balaram took the mace and defeated the enemy army well.

ਜੋ ਭਟ ਆਇ ਭਿਰੇ ਸਮੁਹੇ ਤਿਹ ਏਕ ਚਪੇਟਹਿ ਸੋ ਸਿਰੁ ਤੋਰਿਯੋ ॥
jo bhatt aae bhire samuhe tih ek chapetteh so sir toriyo |

On this side, Balram taking his mace in his hand in rage, shook violently the enemy’s army and the warrior who confronted him, he broke his head even with one slep

ਅਉਰ ਜਿਤੀ ਚਤੁਰੰਗ ਚਮੂੰ ਤਿਨ ਕੋ ਮੁਖ ਐਸੀ ਹੀ ਭਾਤਿ ਸੋ ਮੋਰਿਯੋ ॥
aaur jitee chaturang chamoon tin ko mukh aaisee hee bhaat so moriyo |

As much as the four-color army was, their faces are also twisted in the same way.

ਜੀਤ ਲਏ ਸਭ ਹੀ ਅਰਿਵਾ ਤਿਨ ਤੇ ਅਜਿਤਿਓ ਭਟ ਏਕ ਨ ਛੋਰਿਯੋ ॥੧੯੪੦॥
jeet le sabh hee arivaa tin te ajitio bhatt ek na chhoriyo |1940|

He defeated all the remaining enemy’s army and became completely victorious.1940.

ਕਾਨ੍ਰਹ ਹਲੀ ਮਿਲਿ ਭ੍ਰਾਤ ਦੁਹੂੰ ਜਬ ਸੈਨ ਸਬੈ ਤਿਹ ਭੂਪ ਕੋ ਮਾਰਿਯੋ ॥
kaanrah halee mil bhraat duhoon jab sain sabai tih bhoop ko maariyo |

When the two brothers Krishna and Balarama together killed the entire army of the king (Jarasandha),

ਸੋ ਕੋਊ ਜੀਤ ਬਚਿਯੋ ਤਿਹ ਤੇ ਜਿਨਿ ਦਾਤਨ ਘਾਸ ਗਹਿਓ ਬਲੁ ਹਾਰਿਯੋ ॥
so koaoo jeet bachiyo tih te jin daatan ghaas gahio bal haariyo |

When both the brothers Krishna and Balram together killed the whole army of the enemy, then only that person could save himself, who putting the grass-straws in his mouth, came under their refuge

ਐਸੀ ਦਸਾ ਜਬ ਭੀ ਦਲ ਕੀ ਤਬ ਭੂਪਤਿ ਆਪਨੇ ਨੈਨਿ ਨਿਹਾਰਿਯੋ ॥
aaisee dasaa jab bhee dal kee tab bhoopat aapane nain nihaariyo |

When the party was in such a condition, the king saw with his own eyes.

ਜੀਤ ਅਉ ਜੀਵ ਕੀ ਆਸ ਤਜੀ ਰਨ ਠਾਨਤ ਭਯੋ ਪੁਰਖਤ ਸੰਭਾਰਿਯੋ ॥੧੯੪੧॥
jeet aau jeev kee aas tajee ran tthaanat bhayo purakhat sanbhaariyo |1941|

When Jarasandh saw this plight with his own eyes, then abandoning the hope of victory and life, he also persistently managed to upkeep his bravery in war.1941.

ਸੋਰਠਾ ॥
soratthaa |

SORTHA

ਦੀਨੀ ਗਦਾ ਚਲਾਇ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਜਦੁਪਤਿ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਹੇਰਿ ਕੈ ॥
deenee gadaa chalaae sree jadupat nrip her kai |

Sri Krishna saw the king and threw his mace.

ਸੂਤਹਿ ਦਯੋ ਗਿਰਾਇ ਅਸ੍ਵ ਚਾਰਿ ਸੰਗ ਹੀ ਹਨੇ ॥੧੯੪੨॥
sooteh dayo giraae asv chaar sang hee hane |1942|

Seeing the king, Krishna struck his mace and killing his four horses, he caused the king to fall down.1942.

ਦੋਹਰਾ ॥
doharaa |

DOHRA

ਪਾਵ ਪਿਆਦਾ ਭੂਪ ਭਯੋ ਅਉਰ ਗਦਾ ਤਬ ਝਾਰਿ ॥
paav piaadaa bhoop bhayo aaur gadaa tab jhaar |

(When) the king became a pawn, then struck the mace again.

ਸ੍ਯਾਮ ਭਨੈ ਸੰਗ ਏਕ ਹੀ ਘਾਇ ਕੀਯੋ ਬਿਸੰਭਾਰ ॥੧੯੪੩॥
sayaam bhanai sang ek hee ghaae keeyo bisanbhaar |1943|

When the king was only on foot, Krishna struck him with his mace again and the king could not control himself.1943.

TOTAK STANZA

ਸਬ ਸੰਧਿ ਜਰਾ ਬਿਸੰਭਾਰ ਭਯੋ ॥
sab sandh jaraa bisanbhaar bhayo |

When Jarasandha became unconscious

ਗਹਿ ਕੈ ਤਬ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਘਨਿ ਸ੍ਯਾਮ ਲਯੋ ॥
geh kai tab sree ghan sayaam layo |

Then Sri Krishna caught (him).

ਗਹਿ ਕੈ ਤਿਹ ਕੋ ਇਹ ਭਾਤਿ ਕਹਿਯੋ ॥
geh kai tih ko ih bhaat kahiyo |

Holding him said thus,

ਪੁਰਖਤ ਇਹੀ ਜੜ ਜੁਧੁ ਚਹਿਯੋ ॥੧੯੪੪॥
purakhat ihee jarr judh chahiyo |1944|

When the king rolled and fell down, then Krishna caught him and said, “O fool! did you come for fighting relying on this strength?”1944.

ਹਲੀ ਬਾਚ ਕਾਨ੍ਰਹ ਸੋ ॥
halee baach kaanrah so |

Speech of Balram addressed to Krishna:

ਦੋਹਰਾ ॥
doharaa |

DOHRA

ਕਾਟਤ ਹੋ ਅਬ ਸੀਸ ਇਹ ਮੁਸਲੀਧਰ ਕਹਿਯੋ ਆਇ ॥
kaattat ho ab sees ih musaleedhar kahiyo aae |

Balram came and said that now (I) cut off its head.

ਜੋ ਜੀਵਤ ਇਹ ਛਾਡਿ ਹੋਂ ਤਉ ਇਹ ਰਾਰਿ ਮਚਾਇ ॥੧੯੪੫॥
jo jeevat ih chhaadd hon tau ih raar machaae |1945|

Balram said, “Now I shall chop off his head, because if he is permitted to go alive, he will then return to fight again.”1945.
