ਸੁਨਹੁ ਬਾਤ ਤੁਮ ਰਾਜ ਕੁਮਾਰਾ ॥
sunahu baat tum raaj kumaaraa |Hey Raj Kumar! You listen (to me).
ਰਤਨ ਮਤੀ ਤੁਮਰੀ ਜੋ ਰਾਨੀ ॥
ratan matee tumaree jo raanee |Your queen is Ratna Mati,
ਯਹ ਮੁਰਿ ਅਤਿ ਸੇਵਕੀ ਪ੍ਰਮਾਨੀ ॥੧੦॥
yah mur at sevakee pramaanee |10|Consider her as my very faithful servant. 10.
ਜੌ ਯਾ ਸੌ ਤੁਮ ਕਰਹੁ ਪ੍ਯਾਰਾ ॥
jau yaa sau tum karahu payaaraa |If you will love him,
ਹ੍ਵੈ ਹੈ ਤੁਮਰੋ ਤਬੈ ਉਧਾਰਾ ॥
hvai hai tumaro tabai udhaaraa |Only then will you have a loan.
ਸਤ੍ਰ ਹੋਇਗੋ ਨਾਸ ਤਿਹਾਰੋ ॥
satr hoeigo naas tihaaro |Your enemies will be destroyed.
ਤਬ ਜਾਨੌ ਤੂ ਭਗਤ ਹਮਾਰੋ ॥੧੧॥
tab jaanau too bhagat hamaaro |11|Then (I) will understand that you are my devotee. 11.
ਯੌ ਕਹਿ ਲੋਕੰਜਨ ਦ੍ਰਿਗ ਡਾਰੀ ॥
yau keh lokanjan drig ddaaree |Saying this (he) put Lokanjan (surma) in his eyes.
ਭਈ ਲੋਪ ਨਹਿ ਜਾਇ ਨਿਹਾਰੀ ॥
bhee lop neh jaae nihaaree |She mysteriously disappeared and could not be seen.
ਮੂੜ ਰਾਵ ਤਿਹ ਰੁਦ੍ਰ ਪ੍ਰਮਾਨਾ ॥
moorr raav tih rudr pramaanaa |The foolish king mistook him for Rudra.
ਭੇਦ ਅਭੇਦ ਕਛੁ ਪਸੂ ਨ ਜਾਨਾ ॥੧੨॥
bhed abhed kachh pasoo na jaanaa |12|The fool did not know anything about difference. 12.
ਤਬ ਤੇ ਤਾ ਸੌ ਕੀਆ ਪ੍ਯਾਰਾ ॥
tab te taa sau keea payaaraa |From then on with her (the king) all the other beautiful queens
ਤਜਿ ਕਰਿ ਸਕਲ ਸੁੰਦਰੀ ਨਾਰਾ ॥
taj kar sakal sundaree naaraa |Started loving with abandon.
ਇਹ ਛਲ ਛਲਾ ਚੰਚਲਾ ਰਾਜਾ ॥
eih chhal chhalaa chanchalaa raajaa |Chanchala tricked the king with this trick
ਆਲੂਰੇ ਗੜ ਕੋ ਸਿਰਤਾਜਾ ॥੧੩॥
aaloore garr ko sirataajaa |13|Who was the lord of Alur Garh. 13.

ਮਥੁਰਾ ਨਾਮ ਹਮਾਰੇ ਰਹੈ ॥
mathuraa naam hamaare rahai |(A person) named Mathura lived among us.
ਜਗ ਤਿਹ ਤ੍ਰਿਯਹਿ ਗੁਲਾਬੇ ਕਹੈ ॥
jag tih triyeh gulaabe kahai |The world used to call his wife Gulabo.
ਰਾਮ ਦਾਸ ਨਾਮਾ ਤਹ ਆਯੋ ॥
raam daas naamaa tah aayo |A person named Ram Das came there.
ਨਿਰਖਿ ਨਾਰਿ ਤਿਹ ਮਦਨ ਸਤਾਯੋ ॥੧॥
nirakh naar tih madan sataayo |1|Seeing (that) woman, he was troubled by lust. 1.
ਬਹੁਤ ਬਰਿਸ ਤਾ ਸੌ ਵਹੁ ਰਹਾ ॥
bahut baris taa sau vahu rahaa |He stayed with her for many years
ਪੁਨਿ ਐਸੇ ਤਿਹ ਤ੍ਰਿਯ ਸੌ ਕਹਾ ॥
pun aaise tih triy sau kahaa |And then said thus unto the woman,
ਆਉ ਹੋਹਿ ਹਮਰੀ ਤੈ ਨਾਰੀ ॥
aau hohi hamaree tai naaree |Come on! And (now) you become my wife.
ਕਸਿ ਦੈ ਹੈ ਤੁਹਿ ਯਹ ਮੁਰਦਾਰੀ ॥੨॥
kas dai hai tuhi yah muradaaree |2|What does this (Mathura) dead man give you? 2.
ਭਲੀ ਭਲੀ ਅਬਲਾ ਤਿਨ ਭਾਖੀ ॥
bhalee bhalee abalaa tin bhaakhee |The woman called him 'Bhali Bhali'
ਚਿਤ ਮਹਿ ਰਾਖਿ ਨ ਕਾਹੂ ਆਖੀ ॥
chit meh raakh na kaahoo aakhee |And keep (this matter) in your heart, do not tell anyone.
ਜਬ ਮਥੁਰਾ ਆਯੋ ਤਿਹ ਧਾਮਾ ॥
jab mathuraa aayo tih dhaamaa |When Mathura came to his house
ਤਬ ਅਸਿ ਬਚਨ ਬਖਾਨ੍ਯੋ ਬਾਮਾ ॥੩॥
tab as bachan bakhaanayo baamaa |3|Then the woman spoke like this. 3.
ਹਰੀ ਚੰਦ ਰਾਜਾ ਜਗ ਭਯੋ ॥
haree chand raajaa jag bhayo |King Hari Chand was born in the world.
ਅੰਤ ਕਾਲ ਸੋ ਭੀ ਮਰਿ ਗਯੋ ॥
ant kaal so bhee mar gayo |At the end he also died.
ਮਾਨਧਾਤ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਭੂਪ ਬਢਾਯੋ ॥
maanadhaat prabh bhoop badtaayo |There was a great king named Mandhata.
ਅੰਤ ਕਾਲ ਸੋਊ ਕਾਲ ਖਪਾਯੋ ॥੪॥
ant kaal soaoo kaal khapaayo |4|He was also killed by famine in the end. 4.
ਜੋ ਨਰ ਨਾਰਿ ਭਯੋ ਸੋ ਮਰਾ ॥
jo nar naar bhayo so maraa |(In this world) the male and female who is born, has died.
ਯਾ ਜਗ ਮਹਿ ਕੋਊ ਨ ਉਬਰਾ ॥
yaa jag meh koaoo na ubaraa |There is no one left in this world.
ਇਹ ਜਗ ਥਿਰ ਏਕੈ ਕਰਤਾਰਾ ॥
eih jag thir ekai karataaraa |Only one creator is permanent in this world
ਔਰ ਮ੍ਰਿਤਕ ਇਹ ਸਗਲ ਸੰਸਾਰਾ ॥੫॥
aauar mritak ih sagal sansaaraa |5|And the rest of the world is perishable. 5.
ਦੋਹਰਾ ॥
doharaa |dual:
ਯਾ ਜਗ ਮਹਿ ਸੋਈ ਜਿਯਤ ਪੁੰਨ੍ਯ ਦਾਨ ਜਿਨ ਕੀਨ ॥
yaa jag meh soee jiyat punay daan jin keen |In this world, only he lives (ie is immortal) who has done good deeds.
ਸਿਖਿਯਨ ਕੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਕਰੀ ਜੋ ਮਾਗੈ ਸੋ ਦੀਨ ॥੬॥
sikhiyan kee sevaa karee jo maagai so deen |6|He who has served the Sikhs (servants) has given what he asked for. 6.

ਯਹ ਉਪਦੇਸ ਸੁਨਤ ਜੜ ਢਰਿਯੋ ॥
yah upades sunat jarr dtariyo |After hearing this sermon, the fool Mathura fell
ਬਹੁਰਿ ਨਾਰਿ ਸੌ ਬਚਨ ਉਚਰਿਯੋ ॥
bahur naar sau bachan uchariyo |And then began to say to the woman.
ਜੋ ਉਪਜੈ ਜਿਯ ਭਲੀ ਤਿਹਾਰੈ ॥
jo upajai jiy bhalee tihaarai |What has come to your mind is correct.
ਵਹੈ ਕਾਮ ਮੈ ਕਰੌ ਸਵਾਰੈ ॥੭॥
vahai kaam mai karau savaarai |7|I will do the same work well.7.
ਤ੍ਰਿਯ ਬਾਚ ॥
triy baach |The woman said:
ਫਟਾ ਬਸਤ੍ਰ ਜਾ ਕਾ ਲਖਿ ਲੀਜੈ ॥
fattaa basatr jaa kaa lakh leejai |If you see one's tattered armor,
ਬਸਤ੍ਰ ਨਵੀਨ ਤੁਰਤ ਤਿਹ ਦੀਜੈ ॥
basatr naveen turat tih deejai |Give him new armor immediately.
ਜਾ ਕੈ ਘਰਿ ਮਹਿ ਹੋਇ ਨ ਦਾਰਾ ॥
jaa kai ghar meh hoe na daaraa |He who does not have a wife in his house,
ਤਾ ਕਹ ਦੀਜੈ ਅਪਨੀ ਨਾਰਾ ॥੮॥
taa kah deejai apanee naaraa |8|Give him your wife.8.
ਰਾਮ ਦਾਸ ਤਬ ਤਾਹਿ ਨਿਹਾਰਿਯੋ ॥
raam daas tab taeh nihaariyo |Ram Das then looked at him.
ਧਨ ਬਿਹੀਨ ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਰਿ ਬਿਚਾਰਿਯੋ ॥
dhan biheen bin naar bichaariyo |(He) was destitute of wealth and without a wife.
ਧਨ ਹੂੰ ਦੀਯਾ ਨਾਰਿ ਹੂੰ ਦੀਨੀ ॥
dhan hoon deeyaa naar hoon deenee |(Mathura) also gave him money and gave him a wife.
ਭਲੀ ਬੁਰੀ ਜੜ ਕਛੂ ਨ ਚੀਨੀ ॥੯॥
bhalee buree jarr kachhoo na cheenee |9|That fool did not think of anything bad or good. 9.
ਇਹ ਛਲ ਗਈ ਜਾਰ ਕੇ ਨਾਰਾ ॥
eih chhal gee jaar ke naaraa |With this trick (she) went away with the woman.
ਬਸਤ੍ਰ ਦਰਬ ਲੈ ਸਾਥ ਅਪਾਰਾ ॥
basatr darab lai saath apaaraa |took with (her) much armor and wealth.
ਇਹ ਆਪਨ ਅਤਿ ਸਾਧ ਪਛਾਨਾ ॥
eih aapan at saadh pachhaanaa |This (meaning Mathura) considered himself a great saint
ਭਲੀ ਬੁਰੀ ਕਾ ਭੇਵ ਨ ਜਾਨਾ ॥੧੦॥
bhalee buree kaa bhev na jaanaa |10|And did not understand the difference between good and bad. 10.
ਇਤਿ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਚਰਿਤ੍ਰ ਪਖ੍ਯਾਨੇ ਤ੍ਰਿਯਾ ਚਰਿਤ੍ਰੇ ਮੰਤ੍ਰੀ ਭੂਪ ਸੰਬਾਦੇ ਤੀਨ ਸੌ ਚਾਲੀਸ ਚਰਿਤ੍ਰ ਸਮਾਪਤਮ ਸਤੁ ਸੁਭਮ ਸਤੁ ॥੩੪੦॥੬੩੫੨॥ਅਫਜੂੰ॥

ਸੁਕ੍ਰਿਤਾਵਤੀ ਨਗਰ ਇਕ ਸੁਨਾ ॥
sukritaavatee nagar ik sunaa |A town called Sukritavati used to be heard.
ਸੁਕ੍ਰਿਤ ਸੈਨ ਰਾਜਾ ਬਹੁ ਗੁਨਾ ॥
sukrit sain raajaa bahu gunaa |(of which) there was a very virtuous king named Sukrita Sen.
ਸੁਭ ਲਛਨਿ ਦੇ ਨਾਰਿ ਬਿਰਾਜੈ ॥
subh lachhan de naar biraajai |In his (house) lived the wife of Subh Lachani.
ਚੰਦ੍ਰ ਸੂਰ ਕੀ ਲਖਿ ਦੁਤਿ ਲਾਜੈ ॥੧॥
chandr soor kee lakh dut laajai |1|Seeing (him) the moon and the light (brightness) of the sun were ashamed. 1.
ਸ੍ਰੀ ਅਪਛਰਾ ਦੇਇ ਸੁ ਬਾਲਾ ॥
sree apachharaa dee su baalaa |(He had) a girl named Apachara Dei,
ਮਾਨਹੁ ਸਕਲ ਰਾਗ ਕੀ ਮਾਲਾ ॥
maanahu sakal raag kee maalaa |As if there is a garland of all ragas.
ਕਹੀ ਨ ਜਾਤ ਤਵਨ ਕੀ ਸੋਭਾ ॥
kahee na jaat tavan kee sobhaa |His beauty cannot be described.
ਇੰਦ੍ਰ ਚੰਦ੍ਰ ਜਸ ਰਵਿ ਲਖਿ ਲੋਭਾ ॥੨॥
eindr chandr jas rav lakh lobhaa |2|Seeing his form, Indra, the moon and the sun also became greedy. 2.
ਤਹ ਇਕ ਆਇ ਗਯੋ ਸੌਦਾਗਰ ॥
tah ik aae gayo sauadaagar |A merchant came there.
ਪੂਤ ਸਾਥ ਤਿਹ ਜਾਨੁ ਪ੍ਰਭਾਕਰ ॥
poot saath tih jaan prabhaakar |He had a son like the sun.
ਰਾਜ ਸੁਤਾ ਤਿਹ ਊਪਰ ਅਟਕੀ ॥
raaj sutaa tih aoopar attakee |Raj Kumari fell in love with him
ਚਟਪਟ ਲਾਜ ਲੋਕ ਕੀ ਸਟਕੀ ॥੩॥
chattapatt laaj lok kee sattakee |3|And threw away the people's lodge. 3.
