ਮਮ ਕਥਾ ਨ ਤਿਨ ਕਹੀਯੋ ਪ੍ਰਬੀਨ ॥
mam kathaa na tin kaheeyo prabeen |

Hey Sujan! Don't tell them my story.

ਸੁਨਿ ਮਰਯੋ ਪੁਤ੍ਰ ਤੇਊ ਹੋਹਿ ਛੀਨ ॥੨੩॥
sun marayo putr teaoo hohi chheen |23|

“Do not say anything me to them, otherwise they will die in extreme agony.”23.

ਇਹ ਭਾਤ ਜਬੈ ਦਿਜ ਕਹੈ ਬੈਨ ॥
eih bhaat jabai dij kahai bain |

When the Brahmin spoke such words,

ਜਲ ਸੁਨਤ ਭੂਪ ਚੁਐ ਚਲੇ ਨੈਨ ॥
jal sunat bhoop chuaai chale nain |

When Shravan Kumar said these words to the king about giving (to his blind parents) then tears gushed out of his eyes.

ਧ੍ਰਿਗ ਮੋਹ ਜਿਨ ਸੁ ਕੀਨੋ ਕੁਕਰਮ ॥
dhrig moh jin su keeno kukaram |

(Dasaratha said-) I am sorry who has done such a bad deed,

ਹਤਿ ਭਯੋ ਰਾਜ ਅਰੁ ਗਯੋ ਧਰਮ ॥੨੪॥
hat bhayo raaj ar gayo dharam |24|

The king said, “It is a disgrace for me that I have done such a deed, my royal merit has been destroyed and I am devoid of Dharma.”24.

ਜਬ ਲਯੋ ਭੂਪ ਤਿਹ ਸਰ ਨਿਕਾਰ ॥
jab layo bhoop tih sar nikaar |

When the king (took out the arrow from his body

ਤਬ ਤਜੇ ਪ੍ਰਾਣ ਮੁਨ ਬਰ ਉਦਾਰ ॥
tab taje praan mun bar udaar |

When the king pulled out Shravan from the pool, then that ascetic breathed his last.

ਪੁਨ ਭਯੋ ਰਾਵ ਮਨ ਮੈ ਉਦਾਸ ॥
pun bhayo raav man mai udaas |

Then the king became sad in mind

ਗ੍ਰਿਹ ਪਲਟ ਜਾਨ ਕੀ ਤਜੀ ਆਸ ॥੨੫॥
grih palatt jaan kee tajee aas |25|

Then the king became very sad and abandoned the idea of returning to his home.25.

ਜੀਅ ਠਟੀ ਕਿ ਧਾਰੋ ਜੋਗ ਭੇਸ ॥
jeea tthattee ki dhaaro jog bhes |

thought that I should assume a suitable disguise

ਕਹੂੰ ਬਸੌ ਜਾਇ ਬਨਿ ਤਿਆਗਿ ਦੇਸ ॥
kahoon basau jaae ban tiaag des |

He thought in his mind that he may wear the garb of Yogi and abide in the forest forsaking his royal duties.

ਕਿਹ ਕਾਜ ਮੋਰ ਯਹ ਰਾਜ ਸਾਜ ॥
kih kaaj mor yah raaj saaj |

What is this kingdom of mine?

ਦਿਜ ਮਾਰਿ ਕੀਯੋ ਜਿਨ ਅਸ ਕੁਕਾਜ ॥੨੬॥
dij maar keeyo jin as kukaaj |26|

My roayal duties are now meaningless for me, when I have committed a bad deed by killing a Brahmin.26.

ਇਹ ਭਾਤ ਕਹੀ ਪੁਨਿ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਪ੍ਰਬੀਨ ॥
eih bhaat kahee pun nrip prabeen |

Sujan Raje then said something like this

ਸਭ ਜਗਤਿ ਕਾਲ ਕਰਮੈ ਅਧੀਨ ॥
sabh jagat kaal karamai adheen |

The king then uttered these words, ‘I have brought under my control the situations of all the world, but now what hath been committed by me?

ਅਬ ਕਰੋ ਕਛੂ ਐਸੋ ਉਪਾਇ ॥
ab karo kachhoo aaiso upaae |

Now let's do something like this,

ਜਾ ਤੇ ਸੁ ਬਚੈ ਤਿਹ ਤਾਤ ਮਾਇ ॥੨੭॥
jaa te su bachai tih taat maae |27|

‘Now I should take such measures, that may cause his parents to survive.’27.

ਭਰਿ ਲਯੋ ਕੁੰਭ ਸਿਰ ਪੈ ਉਠਾਇ ॥
bhar layo kunbh sir pai utthaae |

The king filled the pot (with water) and lifted it on his head

ਤਹ ਗਯੋ ਜਹਾ ਦਿਜ ਤਾਤ ਮਾਇ ॥
tah gayo jahaa dij taat maae |

The king filled the pitcher with water and lifted it on his head and reached at the spot, where the parents of Shravan had been lying.

ਜਬ ਗਯੋ ਨਿਕਟ ਤਿਨ ਕੇ ਸੁ ਧਾਰ ॥
jab gayo nikatt tin ke su dhaar |

When cautiously approached them,

ਤਬ ਲਖੀ ਦੁਹੂੰ ਤਿਹ ਪਾਵ ਚਾਰ ॥੨੮॥
tab lakhee duhoon tih paav chaar |28|

When the king reached near them with very slow steps, then they heard the voice of the moving footsteps.28.

ਦਿਜ ਬਾਚ ਰਾਜਾ ਸੋਂ ॥
dij baach raajaa son |

The speech of the Brahmin addressed to the King :

ਪਾਧੜੀ ਛੰਦ ॥
paadharree chhand |

PADDHRAI STANZA

ਕਹ ਕਹੋ ਪੁਤ੍ਰ ਲਾਗੀ ਅਵਾਰ ॥
kah kaho putr laagee avaar |

O son! Ten, why the delay?

ਸੁਨਿ ਰਹਿਓ ਮੋਨ ਭੂਪਤ ਉਦਾਰ ॥
sun rahio mon bhoopat udaar |

“O Son! Tell us the reason for so much delay. “Hearing these words the large-hearted king remained silent.

ਫਿਰਿ ਕਹਯੋ ਕਾਹਿ ਬੋਲਤ ਨ ਪੂਤ ॥
fir kahayo kaeh bolat na poot |

(The Brahmin) said again - Son! why not speak

ਚੁਪ ਰਹੇ ਰਾਜ ਲਹਿ ਕੈ ਕਸੂਤ ॥੨੯॥
chup rahe raaj leh kai kasoot |29|

They again said, “O son! Why do you not speak?” The king, fearing his reply to be unfavorable, again remained silent.29.

ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਦੀਓ ਪਾਨ ਤਿਹ ਪਾਨ ਜਾਇ ॥
nrip deeo paan tih paan jaae |

The king went to his hand and gave him water.

ਚਕਿ ਰਹੇ ਅੰਧ ਤਿਹ ਕਰ ਛੁਹਾਇ ॥
chak rahe andh tih kar chhuhaae |

Coming near them, the king gave them water then on touching his hand those blind persons, .

ਕਰ ਕੋਪ ਕਹਿਯੋ ਤੂ ਆਹਿ ਕੋਇ ॥
kar kop kahiyo too aaeh koe |

(Then) in anger said (Tell the truth) Who are you?

ਇਮ ਸੁਨਤ ਸਬਦ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਦਯੋ ਰੋਇ ॥੩੦॥
eim sunat sabad nrip dayo roe |30|

Getting bewildered, asked angrily about his identity. Hearing these words, the king began to weep.30

ਰਾਜਾ ਬਾਚ ਦਿਜ ਸੋਂ ॥
raajaa baach dij son |

The speech of the King addressed to the Brahmin:

ਪਾਧੜੀ ਛੰਦ ॥
paadharree chhand |

PADDHRAI STANZA

ਹਉ ਪੁਤ੍ਰ ਘਾਤ ਤਵ ਬ੍ਰਹਮਣੇਸ ॥
hau putr ghaat tav brahamanes |

Oh great Brahman! I am your son's killer,

ਜਿਹ ਹਨਿਯੋ ਸ੍ਰਵਣ ਤਵ ਸੁਤ ਸੁਦੇਸ ॥
jih haniyo sravan tav sut sudes |

“O eminent Brahmin! I am the killer of your son, I am the one who hast killed your son.”

ਮੈ ਪਰਯੋ ਸਰਣ ਦਸਰਥ ਰਾਇ ॥
mai parayo saran dasarath raae |

I lie at (your) feet, King Dasharatha,

ਚਾਹੋ ਸੁ ਕਰੋ ਮੋਹਿ ਬਿਪ ਆਇ ॥੩੧॥
chaaho su karo mohi bip aae |31|

“I am Dasrath, seeking your refuge, O Brahmin! Do to me whatever you wish.31.

ਰਾਖੈ ਤੁ ਰਾਖੁ ਮਾਰੈ ਤੁ ਮਾਰੁ ॥
raakhai tu raakh maarai tu maar |

Keep if you want to keep, kill if you want to kill.

ਮੈ ਪਰੋ ਸਰਣ ਤੁਮਰੈ ਦੁਆਰਿ ॥
mai paro saran tumarai duaar |

“If you want, you may protect me, otherwise kill me, I am under your shelter, I am here before you.”

ਤਬ ਕਹੀ ਕਿਨੋ ਦਸਰਥ ਰਾਇ ॥
tab kahee kino dasarath raae |

Then they both said to King Dasharatha-

ਬਹੁ ਕਾਸਟ ਅਗਨ ਦ੍ਵੈ ਦੇਇ ਮੰਗਾਇ ॥੩੨॥
bahu kaasatt agan dvai dee mangaae |32|

Then the king Dasrath, on their bidding, asked some attendant to bring good deal of wood for burning.32.

ਤਬ ਲੀਯੋ ਅਧਿਕ ਕਾਸਟ ਮੰਗਾਇ ॥
tab leeyo adhik kaasatt mangaae |

Then much wood was ordered,

ਚੜ ਬੈਠੇ ਤਹਾ ਸਲ੍ਰਹ੍ਰਹ ਕਉ ਬਨਾਇ ॥
charr baitthe tahaa salrahrah kau banaae |

A great load of wood was brought, and they (the blind parents) got prepared the funeral pyres and sat on them.

ਚਹੂੰ ਓਰ ਦਈ ਜੁਆਲਾ ਜਗਾਇ ॥
chahoon or dee juaalaa jagaae |

opened fire from both sides,

ਦਿਜ ਜਾਨ ਗਈ ਪਾਵਕ ਸਿਰਾਇ ॥੩੩॥
dij jaan gee paavak siraae |33|

The fire was lighted on all the four sides and in this way those Brahmins caused the end of their lives.33.

ਤਬ ਜੋਗ ਅਗਨਿ ਤਨ ਤੇ ਉਪ੍ਰਾਜ ॥
tab jog agan tan te upraaj |

Then he produced yoga fire from his body

ਦੁਹੂੰ ਮਰਨ ਜਰਨ ਕੋ ਸਜਿਯੋ ਸਾਜ ॥
duhoon maran jaran ko sajiyo saaj |

They created the fire of Yoga form their bodies and wanted to be reduced to ashes.
