ਸ੍ਯਾਮ ਇਤੇ ਛਪਿ ਆਵਤ ਭਯੋ ਕਬਿ ਸ੍ਯਾਮ ਭਨੈ ਤਿਨ ਕਾਰਨ ਛੈ ਕੈ ॥੧੯੮੫॥

sayaam ite chhap aavat bhayo kab sayaam bhanai tin kaaran chhai kai |1985|

The kettledrums, charionets, and small drums were being played with such intensity that the ear-drums seemed to be getting torn.1985.

ਸ੍ਯਾਮ ਭਨੈ ਜੋਊ ਬੇਦ ਕੇ ਬੀਚ ਲਿਖੀ ਬਿਧਿ ਬ੍ਯਾਹ ਕੀ ਸੋ ਦੁਹੂੰ ਕੀਨੀ ॥

sayaam bhanai joaoo bed ke beech likhee bidh bayaah kee so duhoon keenee |

(Poet) Shyam says, the method of marriage which is written in the Vedas, was performed by both (parties).

ਮੰਤ੍ਰਨ ਸੋ ਅਭਿਮੰਤ੍ਰਨ ਕੈ ਭੂਅ ਫੇਰਨ ਕੀ ਸੁ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਕੈ ਲੀਨੀ ॥

mantran so abhimantran kai bhooa feran kee su pavitr kai leenee |

The marriage of both was soleminsed according to Vedic rites and there were performed the matrimonial rites of moving round the sacred fire with the chanting of mantras

ਅਉਰ ਜਿਤੇ ਦਿਜ ਸ੍ਰੇਸਟ ਹੁਤੇ ਤਿਨ ਕੋ ਅਤਿ ਹੀ ਦਛਨਾ ਤਿਨ ਦੀਨੀ ॥

aaur jite dij sresatt hute tin ko at hee dachhanaa tin deenee |

Enormous gifts were given to the eminent Brahmins

ਬੇਦੀ ਰਚੀ ਭਲੀ ਭਾਤਹ ਸੋ ਜਦੁਬੀਰ ਬਿਨਾ ਸਭ ਲਾਗਤ ਹੀਨੀ ॥੧੯੮੬॥

bedee rachee bhalee bhaatah so jadubeer binaa sabh laagat heenee |1986|

A charming altar was erected, but nothing seemed appropriate without Krishna.1986.

ਤਉ ਹੀ ਲਉ ਲੈ ਕਿਹ ਸੰਗਿ ਪੁਰੋਹਿਤ ਦੇਵੀ ਕੀ ਪੂਜਾ ਕੇ ਕਾਜ ਸਿਧਾਰੇ ॥

tau hee lau lai kih sang purohit devee kee poojaa ke kaaj sidhaare |

Then taking the priest alongwith themselves all went to worship the goddess

ਸ੍ਯੰਦਨ ਪੈ ਚੜਵਾਇ ਤਬੈ ਤਿਹ ਪਾਛੇ ਚਲੇ ਤਿਹ ਕੇ ਭਟ ਭਾਰੇ ॥

sayandan pai charravaae tabai tih paachhe chale tih ke bhatt bhaare |

Many warriors followed them on their chariots

ਯਾ ਬਿਧਿ ਦੇਖਿ ਪ੍ਰਤਾਪ ਘਨੋ ਮੁਖ ਤੇ ਰੁਕਮੈ ਇਹ ਬੈਨ ਉਚਾਰੇ ॥

yaa bidh dekh prataap ghano mukh te rukamai ih bain uchaare |

Rukmi, seeing such great glory, uttered these words

ਰਾਖੀ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਪਤਿ ਮੋਰ ਭਲੀ ਬਿਧਿ ਧੰਨ੍ਯ ਕਹਿਯੋ ਅਬ ਭਾਗ ਹਮਾਰੇ ॥੧੯੮੭॥

raakhee prabhoo pat mor bhalee bidh dhanay kahiyo ab bhaag hamaare |1987|

Seeing such an atmosphere, Rukmi, the brother of Rukmani said this, “O Lord! I am very fortunate that you have protected my honour.”1987.

ਚੌਪਈ ॥

CHAUPAI

ਜਬ ਰੁਕਮਿਨੀ ਤਿਹ ਮੰਦਿਰ ਗਈ ॥

jab rukaminee tih mandir gee |

When Rukmani went to that temple,

ਦੁਖ ਸੰਗਿ ਬਿਹਬਲ ਅਤਿ ਹੀ ਭਈ ॥

dukh sang bihabal at hee bhee |

When Rukmani went into the temple, she became greatly agitated with affliction

ਤਿਨਿ ਇਵ ਰੋਇ ਸਿਵਾ ਸੰਗਿ ਰਰਿਓ ॥

tin iv roe sivaa sang rario |

He thus wept and said to the goddess,

ਤੁਹਿ ਤੇ ਮੋਹਿ ਇਹੀ ਬਰੁ ਸਰਿਓ ॥੧੯੮੮॥

tuhi te mohi ihee bar sario |1988|

She beseeched Chandi weepingly if this match was necessary for her.1988.

ਸਵੈਯਾ ॥

SWAYYA

ਦੂਰਿ ਦਈ ਸਖੀਆ ਕਰਿ ਕੈ ਕਰਿ ਲੀਨ ਛੁਰੀ ਕਹਿਓ ਘਾਤ ਕਰੈ ਹਉ ॥

door dee sakheea kar kai kar leen chhuree kahio ghaat karai hau |

Keeping her friends away from her, she took the small dagger in her hand and said, “I shall commit suicide

ਮੈ ਬਹੁ ਸੇਵ ਸਿਵਾ ਕੀ ਕਰੀ ਤਿਹ ਤੇ ਸਭ ਹੌ ਸੁ ਇਹੈ ਫਲੁ ਪੈ ਹਉ ॥

mai bahu sev sivaa kee karee tih te sabh hau su ihai fal pai hau |

I have served Chandi greatly and for that service, I have got this reward

ਪ੍ਰਾਨਨ ਧਾਮਿ ਪਠੋ ਜਮ ਕੇ ਇਹ ਦੇਹੁਰੇ ਊਪਰ ਪਾਪ ਚੜੈ ਹਉ ॥

praanan dhaam pattho jam ke ih dehure aoopar paap charrai hau |

By sending the souls to Yamaraj's house, I offer sin on this shrine (temple).

ਕੈ ਇਹ ਕੋ ਰਿਝਵਾਇ ਅਬੈ ਬਰਿਬੋ ਹਰਿ ਕੋ ਇਹ ਤੇ ਬਰੁ ਪੈ ਹਉ ॥੧੯੮੯॥

kai ih ko rijhavaae abai baribo har ko ih te bar pai hau |1989|

“I shall die and this place will become polluted by my death, otherwise I shall please her now and get the boon of marrying Krishna from her.”1989.

ਦੇਵੀ ਜੂ ਬਾਚ ਰੁਕਮਿਨੀ ਸੋ ॥

Speech of the goddess:

SWAYYA

ਦੇਖਿ ਦਸਾ ਤਿਹ ਕੀ ਜਗ ਮਾਤ ਪ੍ਰਤਛ ਹ੍ਵੈ ਤਾਹਿ ਕਹਿਓ ਹਸਿ ਐਸੇ ॥

dekh dasaa tih kee jag maat pratachh hvai taeh kahio has aaise |

Seeing his condition, Jagat Mata appeared, laughed at him and said,

ਸ੍ਯਾਮ ਕੀ ਬਾਮ ਤੈ ਆਪਨੇ ਚਿਤ ਕਰੋ ਦੁਚਿਤਾ ਫੁਨਿ ਰੰਚ ਨ ਕੈਸੇ ॥

sayaam kee baam tai aapane chit karo duchitaa fun ranch na kaise |

Seeing her in such a plight, the mother of the world was pleased and said to her, “You are the wife of Krishna, you should have no duality about this, even slightly

ਜੋ ਸਿਸੁਪਾਲ ਕੇ ਹੈ ਚਿਤ ਮੈ ਨਹਿ ਹ੍ਵੈ ਹੈ ਸੋਊ ਤਿਹ ਕੀ ਸੁ ਰੁਚੈ ਸੇ ॥

jo sisupaal ke hai chit mai neh hvai hai soaoo tih kee su ruchai se |

What is in Shishupal's mind will not be in his interest.

ਹੁਇ ਹੈ ਅਵਸਿ ਸੋਊ ਸੁਨਿ ਰੀ ਕਬਿ ਸ੍ਯਾਮ ਕਹੈ ਤੁਮਰੇ ਜੀ ਜੈਸੇ ॥੧੯੯੦॥

hue hai avas soaoo sun ree kab sayaam kahai tumare jee jaise |1990|

“Whatever there is in the mind of Shishupal, that will never occur and whatever is in your mind, that will definitely happen.”1990.

ਦੋਹਰਾ ॥

DOHRA

ਯੌ ਬਰੁ ਲੈ ਕੇ ਸਿਵਾ ਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਸੰਨ ਚਲੀ ਹੁਇ ਚਿਤ ॥

yau bar lai ke sivaa te prasan chalee hue chit |

After getting this boon from Chandika, and being pleased, she mounted on her chariot

ਸ੍ਯੰਦਨ ਪੈ ਚੜਿ ਮਨ ਬਿਖੈ ਚਹਿ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਜਦੁਪਤਿ ਮਿਤ ॥੧੯੯੧॥

sayandan pai charr man bikhai cheh sree jadupat mit |1991|

And went back considering Krishna as a friend in her mind.1991.

ਸਵੈਯਾ ॥

SWAYYA

ਚੜੀ ਜਾਤ ਹੁਤੀ ਸੋਊ ਸ੍ਯੰਦਨ ਪੈ ਬ੍ਰਿਜ ਨਾਇਕ ਦ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਬਿਖੈ ਕਰਿ ਕੈ ॥

charree jaat hutee soaoo sayandan pai brij naaeik drisatt bikhai kar kai |

She is riding on the chariot with Sri Krishna in her eyes.

ਅਰੁ ਸਤ੍ਰਨ ਸੈਨ ਨਿਹਾਰਿ ਘਨੀ ਤਿਹ ਤੇ ਨਹੀ ਸ੍ਯਾਮ ਭਨੈ ਡਰਿ ਕੈ ॥

ar satran sain nihaar ghanee tih te nahee sayaam bhanai ddar kai |

Abiding Krishna in her mind, she mounted on her chariot and went back and seeing the large army of the enemies she did not utter the name of Krishna from her mouth

ਪ੍ਰਭ ਆਇ ਪਰਿਓ ਤਿਹ ਮਧਿ ਬਿਖੈ ਇਹ ਲੇਤ ਹੋ ਰੇ ਇਮ ਉਚਰਿ ਕੈ ॥

prabh aae pario tih madh bikhai ih let ho re im uchar kai |

Among them (the enemies) came Sri Krishna (on Rukmani's chariot) and thus said, Oi! I am taking it.

ਬਲੁ ਧਾਰਿ ਲਈ ਰਥ ਭੀਤਰ ਡਾਰਿ ਮੁਰਾਰਿ ਤਬੈ ਬਹੀਯਾ ਧਰਿ ਕੈ ॥੧੯੯੨॥

bal dhaar lee rath bheetar ddaar muraar tabai baheeyaa dhar kai |1992|

At the same time, Krishna reached there and he shouted the name of Rukmani and catching her by her arm, he put her in his chariot with this strength.1992.

ਡਾਰਿ ਰੁਕਮਿਨੀ ਸ੍ਯੰਦਨ ਪੈ ਸਭ ਸੂਰਨ ਸੋ ਇਹ ਭਾਤਿ ਸੁਨਾਈ ॥

ddaar rukaminee sayandan pai sabh sooran so ih bhaat sunaaee |

Having mounted Rukmani in a chariot, having told all the warriors thus (said)

ਜਾਤ ਹੋ ਰੇ ਇਹ ਕੋ ਅਬ ਲੈ ਇਹ ਕੈ ਰੁਕਮੈ ਅਬ ਦੇਖਤ ਭਾਈ ॥

jaat ho re ih ko ab lai ih kai rukamai ab dekhat bhaaee |

Taking Rukmani in his chariot, Krishna said within, the hearing of all the warriors, “I am taking her away even within the sight of Rukmi,

ਪਉਰਖ ਹੈ ਜਿਹ ਸੂਰ ਬਿਖੈ ਸੋਊ ਯਾਹਿ ਛਡਾਇਨ ਮਾਡਿ ਲਰਾਈ ॥

paurakh hai jih soor bikhai soaoo yaeh chhaddaaein maadd laraaee |

“And anyone who has the audacity, he may now rescue her by fighting with me

ਆਜ ਸਭੋ ਮਰਿ ਹੋਂ ਟਰਿ ਨਹੀ ਸ੍ਯਾਮ ਭਨੈ ਮੁਹਿ ਰਾਮ ਦੁਹਾਈ ॥੧੯੯੩॥

aaj sabho mar hon ttar nahee sayaam bhanai muhi raam duhaaee |1993|

I shall kill all today, but shall not swerve from this task.”1993.

ਯੌ ਬਤੀਯਾ ਸੁਨਿ ਕੈ ਤਿਹ ਕੀ ਸਭ ਆਇ ਪਰੇ ਅਤਿ ਕ੍ਰੋਧ ਬਢੈ ਕੈ ॥

yau bateeyaa sun kai tih kee sabh aae pare at krodh badtai kai |

Hearing his words like this, all the warriors came with great anger.

ਰੋਸ ਭਰੇ ਭਟ ਠੋਕਿ ਭੁਜਾ ਕਬਿ ਸ੍ਯਾਮ ਕਹੈ ਅਤਿ ਕ੍ਰੋਧਤ ਹ੍ਵੈ ਕੈ ॥

ros bhare bhatt tthok bhujaa kab sayaam kahai at krodhat hvai kai |

Hearing these words of Krishna, all of them got infuriated and patting their arms, in great anger, fell upon him

ਭੇਰਿ ਘਨੀ ਸਹਨਾਇ ਸਿੰਗੇ ਰਨ ਦੁੰਦਭਿ ਅਉ ਅਤਿ ਤਾਲ ਬਜੈ ਕੈ ॥

bher ghanee sahanaae singe ran dundabh aau at taal bajai kai |

All of them attacked Krishna playing their clarionets, kettledrums, small drums and war-trumpets

ਸੋ ਜਦੁਬੀਰ ਸਰਾਸਨ ਲੈ ਛਿਨ ਬੀਚ ਦਏ ਜਮਲੋਕਿ ਪਠੈ ਕੈ ॥੧੯੯੪॥

so jadubeer saraasan lai chhin beech de jamalok patthai kai |1994|

And Krishna taking his bow and arrows in his hands, despatched all of them to the abode of Yama in an instant.1994.

ਜੋ ਭਟ ਕਾਹੂੰ ਤੇ ਨੈਕੁ ਡਰੇ ਨਹਿ ਸੋ ਰਿਸ ਕੈ ਤਿਹ ਸਾਮੁਹੇ ਆਏ ॥

jo bhatt kaahoon te naik ddare neh so ris kai tih saamuhe aae |

The warriors who had never retreated even from anyone, have come before him in anger.

ਗਾਲ ਬਜਾਇ ਬਜਾਇ ਕੈ ਦੁੰਦਭਿ ਜਿਉ ਘਨ ਸਾਵਨ ਕੇ ਘਹਰਾਏ ॥

gaal bajaae bajaae kai dundabh jiau ghan saavan ke ghaharaae |

The warriors fearing none and playing on their drums and chanting war-songs came before Krishna like the clouds of Sawan

ਸ੍ਰੀ ਜਦੁਬੀਰ ਕੇ ਬਾਨ ਛੁਟੇ ਨ ਟਿਕੇ ਪਲ ਏਕ ਤਹਾ ਠਹਰਾਏ ॥

sree jadubeer ke baan chhutte na ttike pal ek tahaa tthaharaae |

When Krishna discharged his arrows, they could not stay before him even for an instant

ਏਕ ਪਰੇ ਹੀ ਕਰਾਹਤ ਬੀਰ ਬਲੀ ਇਕ ਅੰਤ ਕੇ ਧਾਮਿ ਸਿਧਾਏ ॥੧੯੯੫॥

ek pare hee karaahat beer balee ik ant ke dhaam sidhaae |1995|

Someone is groaning, while lying on the earth and someone is reaching the abode of Yama after dying.1995.

ਐਸੀ ਨਿਹਾਰਿ ਦਸਾ ਦਲ ਕੀ ਸਿਸੁਪਾਲ ਤਬੈ ਰਿਸ ਆਪਹਿ ਆਯੋ ॥

aaisee nihaar dasaa dal kee sisupaal tabai ris aapeh aayo |

Seeing such a condition of (his) army, Sishupala was enraged and came to Nitra himself (to fight).

ਆਇ ਕੈ ਸ੍ਯਾਮ ਸੋ ਐਸੋ ਕਹਿਓ ਨ ਜਰਾਸੰਧਿ ਹਉ ਜੋਊ ਤੋਹਿ ਭਗਾਯੋ ॥

aae kai sayaam so aaiso kahio na jaraasandh hau joaoo tohi bhagaayo |

Seeing such a plight of the army, Shishupal himself came forward in great fury and said to Krishna, “Do not consider me Jarasandh, whom you caused to run away,”
