naam bihoone naanakaa hot jaat sabh dhoor |1|

Without the Naam, the Name of the Lord, O Nanak, all are reduced to dust. ||1||

pavarree |

Pauree:

dhadhaa dhoor puneet tere janooaa |

DHADHA: The dust of the feet of the Saints is sacred.

dhan teaoo jih ruch eaa manooaa |

Blessed are those whose minds are filled with this longing.

dhan nahee baachheh surag na aachheh |

They do not seek wealth, and they do not desire paradise.

at pria preet saadh raj raacheh |

They are immersed in the deep love of their Beloved, and the dust of the feet of the Holy.

dhandhe kahaa biaapeh taahoo |

How can worldly affairs affect those,

jo ek chhaadd an kateh na jaahoo |

Who do not abandon the One Lord, and who go nowhere else?

jaa kai heeai deeo prabh naam |

One whose heart is filled with God's Name,

naanak saadh pooran bhagavaan |4|

O Nanak, is a perfect spiritual being of God. ||4||

salok |

Salok:

anik bhekh ar ngiaan dhiaan manahatth miliaau na koe |

By all sorts of religious robes, knowledge, meditation and stubborn-mindedness, no one has ever met God.

kahu naanak kirapaa bhee bhagat ngiaanee soe |1|

Says Nanak, those upon whom God showers His Mercy, are devotees of spiritual wisdom. ||1||

paurree |

Pauree:

ngangaa ngiaan nahee mukh baatau |

NGANGA: Spiritual wisdom is not obtained by mere words of mouth.

anik jugat saasatr kar bhaatau |

It is not obtained through the various debates of the Shaastras and scriptures.

ngiaanee soe jaa kai drirr soaoo |

They alone are spiritually wise, whose minds are firmly fixed on the Lord.

kahat sunat kachh jog na hoaoo |

Hearing and telling stories, no one attains Yoga.

ngiaanee rahat aagiaa drirr jaa kai |

They alone are spiritually wise, who remain firmly committed to the Lord's Command.

ausan seet samasar sabh taa kai |

Heat and cold are all the same to them.

ngiaanee tat guramukh beechaaree |

The true people of spiritual wisdom are the Gurmukhs, who contemplate the essence of reality;

naanak jaa kau kirapaa dhaaree |5|

O Nanak, the Lord showers His Mercy upon them. ||5||

salok |

Salok:

aavan aae srisatt meh bin boojhe pas dtor |

Those who have come into the world without understanding are like animals and beasts.

naanak guramukh so bujhai jaa kai bhaag mathor |1|

O Nanak, those who become Gurmukh understand; upon their foreheads is such pre-ordained destiny. ||1||

paurree |

Pauree:

yaa jug meh ekeh kau aaeaa |

They have come into this world to meditate on the One Lord.

janamat mohio mohanee maaeaa |

But ever since their birth, they have been enticed by the fascination of Maya.

garabh kuntt meh uradh tap karate |

Upside-down in the chamber of the womb, they performed intense meditation.

saas saas simarat prabh rahate |

They remembered God in meditation with each and every breath.

aurajh pare jo chhodd chhaddaanaa |

But now, they are entangled in things which they must leave behind.

devanahaar maneh bisaraanaa |

They forget the Great Giver from their minds.

dhaarahu kirapaa jiseh gusaaee |

O Nanak, those upon whom the Lord showers His Mercy,

eit ut naanak tis bisarahu naahee |6|

do not forget Him, here or hereafter. ||6||

salok |

Salok:

aavat hukam binaas hukam aagiaa bhin na koe |

By His Command, we come, and by His Command, we go; no one is beyond His Command.

aavan jaanaa tih mittai naanak jih man soe |1|

Coming and going in reincarnation is ended, O Nanak, for those whose minds are filled with the Lord. ||1||

paurree |

Pauree:

eaoo jeea bahut grabh vaase |

This soul has lived in many wombs.

moh magan meetth jon faase |

Enticed by sweet attachment, it has been trapped in reincarnation.

ein maaeaa trai gun bas keene |

This Maya has subjugated beings through the three qualities.

aapan moh ghatte ghatt deene |

Maya has infused attachment to itself in each and every heart.

e saajan kachh kahahu upaaeaa |

O friend, tell me some way,

jaa te trau bikham ih maaeaa |

by which I may swim across this treacherous ocean of Maya.

kar kirapaa satasang milaae |

The Lord showers His Mercy, and leads us to join the Sat Sangat, the True Congregation.

naanak taa kai nikatt na maae |7|

O Nanak, Maya does not even come near. ||7||

salok |

Salok:

kirat kamaavan subh asubh keene tin prabh aap |

God Himself causes one to perform good and bad actions.

pas aapan hau hau karai naanak bin har kahaa kamaat |1|

The beast indulges in egotism, selfishness and conceit; O Nanak, without the Lord, what can anyone do? ||1||

paurree |

Pauree:

ekeh aap karaavanahaaraa |

The One Lord Himself is the Cause of all actions.

aapeh paap pun bisathaaraa |

He Himself distributes sins and noble acts.

eaa jug jit jit aapeh laaeio |

In this age, people are attached as the Lord attaches them.

so so paaeio ju aap divaaeio |

They receive that which the Lord Himself gives.

auaa kaa ant na jaanai koaoo |

No one knows His limits.

jo jo karai soaoo fun hoaoo |

Whatever He does, comes to pass.

ekeh te sagalaa bisathaaraa |

From the One, the entire expanse of the Universe emanated.

naanak aap savaaranahaaraa |8|

O Nanak, He Himself is our Saving Grace. ||8||

salok |

Salok:

raach rahe banitaa binod kusam rang bikh sor |

Man remains engrossed in women and playful pleasures; the tumult of his passion is like the dye of the safflower, which fades away all too soon.

naanak tih saranee prau binas jaae mai mor |1|

O Nanak, seek God's Sanctuary, and your selfishness and conceit shall be taken away. ||1||
