ਭਉ ਖਾਣਾ ਪੀਣਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਸਾਰੁ ॥
bhau khaanaa peenaa sukh saar |

Those who eat and drink the Fear of God, find the most excellent peace.

ਹਰਿ ਜਨ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਪਾਵੈ ਪਾਰੁ ॥
har jan sangat paavai paar |

Associating with the humble servants of the Lord, they are carried across.

ਸਚੁ ਬੋਲੈ ਬੋਲਾਵੈ ਪਿਆਰੁ ॥
sach bolai bolaavai piaar |

They speak the Truth, and lovingly inspire others to speak it as well.

ਗੁਰ ਕਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਕਰਣੀ ਹੈ ਸਾਰੁ ॥੭॥
gur kaa sabad karanee hai saar |7|

The Word of the Guru's Shabad is the most excellent occupation. ||7||

ਹਰਿ ਜਸੁ ਕਰਮੁ ਧਰਮੁ ਪਤਿ ਪੂਜਾ ॥
har jas karam dharam pat poojaa |

Those who take the Lord's Praises as their karma and Dharma, their honor and worship service

ਕਾਮ ਕ੍ਰੋਧ ਅਗਨੀ ਮਹਿ ਭੂੰਜਾ ॥
kaam krodh aganee meh bhoonjaa |

their sexual desire and anger are burnt off in the fire.

ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਚਾਖਿਆ ਤਉ ਮਨੁ ਭੀਜਾ ॥
har ras chaakhiaa tau man bheejaa |

They taste the sublime essence of the Lord, and their minds are drenched with it.

ਪ੍ਰਣਵਤਿ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਦੂਜਾ ॥੮॥੫॥
pranavat naanak avar na doojaa |8|5|

Prays Nanak, there is no other at all. ||8||5||

ਪ੍ਰਭਾਤੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥
prabhaatee mahalaa 1 |

Prabhaatee, First Mehl:

ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਿ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਪੂਜਾ ॥
raam naam jap antar poojaa |

Chant the Lord's Name, and worship Him deep within your being.

ਗੁਰਸਬਦੁ ਵੀਚਾਰਿ ਅਵਰੁ ਨਹੀ ਦੂਜਾ ॥੧॥
gurasabad veechaar avar nahee doojaa |1|

Contemplate the Word of the Guru's Shabad, and no other. ||1||

ਏਕੋ ਰਵਿ ਰਹਿਆ ਸਭ ਠਾਈ ॥
eko rav rahiaa sabh tthaaee |

The One is pervading all places.

ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਦੀਸੈ ਕਿਸੁ ਪੂਜ ਚੜਾਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
avar na deesai kis pooj charraaee |1| rahaau |

I do not see any other; unto whom should I offer worship? ||1||Pause||

ਮਨੁ ਤਨੁ ਆਗੈ ਜੀਅੜਾ ਤੁਝ ਪਾਸਿ ॥
man tan aagai jeearraa tujh paas |

I place my mind and body in offering before You; I dedicate my soul to You.

ਜਿਉ ਭਾਵੈ ਤਿਉ ਰਖਹੁ ਅਰਦਾਸਿ ॥੨॥
jiau bhaavai tiau rakhahu aradaas |2|

As it pleases You, You save me, Lord; this is my prayer. ||2||

ਸਚੁ ਜਿਹਵਾ ਹਰਿ ਰਸਨ ਰਸਾਈ ॥
sach jihavaa har rasan rasaaee |

True is that tongue which is delighted by the sublime essence of the Lord.

ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਛੂਟਸਿ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਸਰਣਾਈ ॥੩॥
guramat chhoottas prabh saranaaee |3|

Following the Guru's Teachings, one is saved in the Sanctuary of God. ||3||

ਕਰਮ ਧਰਮ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਮੇਰੈ ਕੀਏ ॥
karam dharam prabh merai kee |

My God created religious rituals.

ਨਾਮੁ ਵਡਾਈ ਸਿਰਿ ਕਰਮਾਂ ਕੀਏ ॥੪॥
naam vaddaaee sir karamaan kee |4|

He placed the glory of the Naam above these rituals. ||4||

ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਵਸਿ ਚਾਰਿ ਪਦਾਰਥ ॥
satigur kai vas chaar padaarath |

The four great blessings are under the control of the True Guru.

ਤੀਨਿ ਸਮਾਏ ਏਕ ਕ੍ਰਿਤਾਰਥ ॥੫॥
teen samaae ek kritaarath |5|

When the first three are put aside, one is blessed with the fourth. ||5||

ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਦੀਏ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਧਿਆਨਾਂ ॥
satigur dee mukat dhiaanaan |

Those whom the True Guru blesses with liberation and meditation

ਹਰਿ ਪਦੁ ਚੀਨਿੑ ਭਏ ਪਰਧਾਨਾ ॥੬॥
har pad cheeni bhe paradhaanaa |6|

realize the Lord's State, and become sublime. ||6||

ਮਨੁ ਤਨੁ ਸੀਤਲੁ ਗੁਰਿ ਬੂਝ ਬੁਝਾਈ ॥
man tan seetal gur boojh bujhaaee |

Their minds and bodies are cooled and soothed; the Guru imparts this understanding.

ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਨਿਵਾਜੇ ਕਿਨਿ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਪਾਈ ॥੭॥
prabh nivaaje kin keemat paaee |7|

Who can estimate the value of those whom God has exalted? ||7||

ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਿ ਬੂਝ ਬੁਝਾਈ ॥
kahu naanak gur boojh bujhaaee |

Says Nanak, the Guru has imparted this understanding;

ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨਾ ਗਤਿ ਕਿਨੈ ਨ ਪਾਈ ॥੮॥੬॥
naam binaa gat kinai na paaee |8|6|

without the Naam, the Name of the Lord, no one is emancipated. ||8||6||

ਪ੍ਰਭਾਤੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥
prabhaatee mahalaa 1 |

Prabhaatee, First Mehl:

ਇਕਿ ਧੁਰਿ ਬਖਸਿ ਲਏ ਗੁਰਿ ਪੂਰੈ ਸਚੀ ਬਣਤ ਬਣਾਈ ॥
eik dhur bakhas le gur poorai sachee banat banaaee |

Some are forgiven by the Primal Lord God; the Perfect Guru makes the true making.

ਹਰਿ ਰੰਗ ਰਾਤੇ ਸਦਾ ਰੰਗੁ ਸਾਚਾ ਦੁਖ ਬਿਸਰੇ ਪਤਿ ਪਾਈ ॥੧॥
har rang raate sadaa rang saachaa dukh bisare pat paaee |1|

Those who are attuned to the Love of the Lord are imbued with Truth forever; their pains are dispelled, and they obtain honor. ||1||

ਝੂਠੀ ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਕੀ ਚਤੁਰਾਈ ॥
jhootthee duramat kee chaturaaee |

False are the clever tricks of the evil-minded.

ਬਿਨਸਤ ਬਾਰ ਨ ਲਾਗੈ ਕਾਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
binasat baar na laagai kaaee |1| rahaau |

They shall disappear in no time at all. ||1||Pause||

ਮਨਮੁਖ ਕਉ ਦੁਖੁ ਦਰਦੁ ਵਿਆਪਸਿ ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਦੁਖੁ ਨ ਜਾਈ ॥
manamukh kau dukh darad viaapas manamukh dukh na jaaee |

Pain and suffering afflict the self-willed manmukh. The pains of the self-willed manmukh shall never depart.

ਸੁਖ ਦੁਖ ਦਾਤਾ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਜਾਤਾ ਮੇਲਿ ਲਏ ਸਰਣਾਈ ॥੨॥
sukh dukh daataa guramukh jaataa mel le saranaaee |2|

The Gurmukh recognizes the Giver of pleasure and pain. He merges in His Sanctuary. ||2||

ਮਨਮੁਖ ਤੇ ਅਭ ਭਗਤਿ ਨ ਹੋਵਸਿ ਹਉਮੈ ਪਚਹਿ ਦਿਵਾਨੇ ॥
manamukh te abh bhagat na hovas haumai pacheh divaane |

The self-willed manmukhs do not know loving devotional worship; they are insane, rotting away in their egotism.

ਇਹੁ ਮਨੂਆ ਖਿਨੁ ਊਭਿ ਪਇਆਲੀ ਜਬ ਲਗਿ ਸਬਦ ਨ ਜਾਨੇ ॥੩॥
eihu manooaa khin aoobh peaalee jab lag sabad na jaane |3|

This mind flies in an instant from the heavens to the underworld, as long as it does not know the Word of the Shabad. ||3||

ਭੂਖ ਪਿਆਸਾ ਜਗੁ ਭਇਆ ਤਿਪਤਿ ਨਹੀ ਬਿਨੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪਾਏ ॥
bhookh piaasaa jag bheaa tipat nahee bin satigur paae |

The world has become hungry and thirsty; without the True Guru, it is not satisfied.

ਸਹਜੈ ਸਹਜੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਈਐ ਦਰਗਹ ਪੈਧਾ ਜਾਏ ॥੪॥
sahajai sahaj milai sukh paaeeai daragah paidhaa jaae |4|

Merging intuitively in the Celestial Lord, peace is obtained, and one goes to the Lord's Court wearing robes of honor. ||4||

ਦਰਗਹ ਦਾਨਾ ਬੀਨਾ ਇਕੁ ਆਪੇ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਬਾਣੀ ॥
daragah daanaa beenaa ik aape niramal gur kee baanee |

The Lord in His Court is Himself the Knower and Seer; the Word of the Guru's Bani is Immaculate.

ਆਪੇ ਸੁਰਤਾ ਸਚੁ ਵੀਚਾਰਸਿ ਆਪੇ ਬੂਝੈ ਪਦੁ ਨਿਰਬਾਣੀ ॥੫॥
aape surataa sach veechaaras aape boojhai pad nirabaanee |5|

He Himself is the Awareness of Truth; He Himself understands the state of nirvaanaa. ||5||

ਜਲੁ ਤਰੰਗ ਅਗਨੀ ਪਵਨੈ ਫੁਨਿ ਤ੍ਰੈ ਮਿਲਿ ਜਗਤੁ ਉਪਾਇਆ ॥
jal tarang aganee pavanai fun trai mil jagat upaaeaa |

He made the waves of water, the fire and the air, and then joined the three together to form the world.

ਐਸਾ ਬਲੁ ਛਲੁ ਤਿਨ ਕਉ ਦੀਆ ਹੁਕਮੀ ਠਾਕਿ ਰਹਾਇਆ ॥੬॥
aaisaa bal chhal tin kau deea hukamee tthaak rahaaeaa |6|

He blessed these elements with such power, that they remain subject to His Command. ||6||

ਐਸੇ ਜਨ ਵਿਰਲੇ ਜਗ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਪਰਖਿ ਖਜਾਨੈ ਪਾਇਆ ॥
aaise jan virale jag andar parakh khajaanai paaeaa |

How rare are those humble beings in this world, whom the Lord tests and places in His Treasury.

ਜਾਤਿ ਵਰਨ ਤੇ ਭਏ ਅਤੀਤਾ ਮਮਤਾ ਲੋਭੁ ਚੁਕਾਇਆ ॥੭॥
jaat varan te bhe ateetaa mamataa lobh chukaaeaa |7|

They rise above social status and color, and rid themselves of possessiveness and greed. ||7||

ਨਾਮਿ ਰਤੇ ਤੀਰਥ ਸੇ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਦੁਖੁ ਹਉਮੈ ਮੈਲੁ ਚੁਕਾਇਆ ॥
naam rate teerath se niramal dukh haumai mail chukaaeaa |

Attuned to the Naam, the Name of the Lord, they are like immaculate sacred shrines; they are rid of the pain and pollution of egotism.

ਨਾਨਕੁ ਤਿਨ ਕੇ ਚਰਨ ਪਖਾਲੈ ਜਿਨਾ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਾਚਾ ਭਾਇਆ ॥੮॥੭॥
naanak tin ke charan pakhaalai jinaa guramukh saachaa bhaaeaa |8|7|

Nanak washes the feet of those who, as Gurmukh, love the True Lord. ||8||7||
