ਤਿਸ ਦੀ ਬੂਝੈ ਜਿ ਗੁਰਸਬਦੁ ਕਮਾਏ ॥
tis dee boojhai ji gurasabad kamaae |

He alone puts out this fire, who practices and lives the Guru's Shabad.

ਤਨੁ ਮਨੁ ਸੀਤਲੁ ਕ੍ਰੋਧੁ ਨਿਵਾਰੇ ਹਉਮੈ ਮਾਰਿ ਸਮਾਇਆ ॥੧੫॥
tan man seetal krodh nivaare haumai maar samaaeaa |15|

His body and mind are cooled and soothed, and his anger is silenced; conquering egotism, he merges in the Lord. ||15||

ਸਚਾ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਸਚੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥
sachaa saahib sachee vaddiaaee |

True is the Lord and Master, and True is His glorious greatness.

ਗੁਰਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਵਿਰਲੈ ਪਾਈ ॥
guraparasaadee viralai paaee |

By Guru's Grace, a rare few attain this.

ਨਾਨਕੁ ਏਕ ਕਹੈ ਬੇਨੰਤੀ ਨਾਮੇ ਨਾਮਿ ਸਮਾਇਆ ॥੧੬॥੧॥੨੩॥
naanak ek kahai benantee naame naam samaaeaa |16|1|23|

Nanak offers this one prayer: through the Naam, the Name of the Lord, may I merge in the Lord. ||16||1||23||

maaroo mahalaa 3 |

Maaroo, Third Mehl:

ਨਦਰੀ ਭਗਤਾ ਲੈਹੁ ਮਿਲਾਏ ॥
nadaree bhagataa laihu milaae |

By Your Grace, please unite with Your devotees.

ਭਗਤ ਸਲਾਹਨਿ ਸਦਾ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਏ ॥
bhagat salaahan sadaa liv laae |

Your devotees ever praise You, lovingly focusing on You.

ਤਉ ਸਰਣਾਈ ਉਬਰਹਿ ਕਰਤੇ ਆਪੇ ਮੇਲਿ ਮਿਲਾਇਆ ॥੧॥
tau saranaaee ubareh karate aape mel milaaeaa |1|

In Your Sanctuary, they are saved, O Creator Lord; You unite them in Union with Yourself. ||1||

ਪੂਰੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਭਗਤਿ ਸੁਹਾਈ ॥
poorai sabad bhagat suhaaee |

Sublime and exalted is devotion to the Perfect Word of the Shabad.

ਅੰਤਰਿ ਸੁਖੁ ਤੇਰੈ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਈ ॥
antar sukh terai man bhaaee |

Peace prevails within; they are pleasing to Your Mind.

ਮਨੁ ਤਨੁ ਸਚੀ ਭਗਤੀ ਰਾਤਾ ਸਚੇ ਸਿਉ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਇਆ ॥੨॥
man tan sachee bhagatee raataa sache siau chit laaeaa |2|

One whose mind and body are imbued with true devotion, focuses his consciousness on the True Lord. ||2||

ਹਉਮੈ ਵਿਚਿ ਸਦ ਜਲੈ ਸਰੀਰਾ ॥
haumai vich sad jalai sareeraa |

In egotism, the body is forever burning.

ਕਰਮੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਭੇਟੇ ਗੁਰੁ ਪੂਰਾ ॥
karam hovai bhette gur pooraa |

When God grants His Grace, one meets the Perfect Guru.

ਅੰਤਰਿ ਅਗਿਆਨੁ ਸਬਦਿ ਬੁਝਾਏ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੩॥
antar agiaan sabad bujhaae satigur te sukh paaeaa |3|

The Shabad dispels the spiritual ignorance within, and through the True Guru, one finds peace. ||3||

ਮਨਮੁਖੁ ਅੰਧਾ ਅੰਧੁ ਕਮਾਏ ॥
manamukh andhaa andh kamaae |

The blind, self-willed manmukh acts blindly.

ਬਹੁ ਸੰਕਟ ਜੋਨੀ ਭਰਮਾਏ ॥
bahu sankatt jonee bharamaae |

He is in terrible trouble, and wanders in reincarnation.

ਜਮ ਕਾ ਜੇਵੜਾ ਕਦੇ ਨ ਕਾਟੈ ਅੰਤੇ ਬਹੁ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੪॥
jam kaa jevarraa kade na kaattai ante bahu dukh paaeaa |4|

He can never snap the noose of Death, and in the end, he suffers in horrible pain. ||4||

ਆਵਣ ਜਾਣਾ ਸਬਦਿ ਨਿਵਾਰੇ ॥
aavan jaanaa sabad nivaare |

Through the Shabad, one's comings and goings in reincarnation are ended.

ਸਚੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਰਖੈ ਉਰ ਧਾਰੇ ॥
sach naam rakhai ur dhaare |

He keeps the True Name enshrined within his heart.

ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਮਰੈ ਮਨੁ ਮਾਰੇ ਹਉਮੈ ਜਾਇ ਸਮਾਇਆ ॥੫॥
gur kai sabad marai man maare haumai jaae samaaeaa |5|

He dies in the Word of the Guru's Shabad, and conquers his mind; stilling his egotism, he merges in the Lord. ||5||

ਆਵਣ ਜਾਣੈ ਪਰਜ ਵਿਗੋਈ ॥
aavan jaanai paraj vigoee |

Coming and going, the people of the world are wasting away.

ਬਿਨੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਥਿਰੁ ਕੋਇ ਨ ਹੋਈ ॥
bin satigur thir koe na hoee |

Without the True Guru, no one finds permanence and stability.

ਅੰਤਰਿ ਜੋਤਿ ਸਬਦਿ ਸੁਖੁ ਵਸਿਆ ਜੋਤੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਮਿਲਾਇਆ ॥੬॥
antar jot sabad sukh vasiaa jotee jot milaaeaa |6|

The Shabad shines its Light deep within the self, and one dwells in peace; one's light merges into the Light. ||6||

ਪੰਚ ਦੂਤ ਚਿਤਵਹਿ ਵਿਕਾਰਾ ॥
panch doot chitaveh vikaaraa |

The five demons think of evil and corruption.

ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹ ਕਾ ਏਹੁ ਪਸਾਰਾ ॥
maaeaa moh kaa ehu pasaaraa |

The expanse is the manifestation of emotional attachment to Maya.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵੇ ਤਾ ਮੁਕਤੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਪੰਚ ਦੂਤ ਵਸਿ ਆਇਆ ॥੭॥
satigur seve taa mukat hovai panch doot vas aaeaa |7|

Serving the True Guru, one is liberated, and the five demons are put under his control. ||7||

ਬਾਝੁ ਗੁਰੂ ਹੈ ਮੋਹੁ ਗੁਬਾਰਾ ॥
baajh guroo hai mohu gubaaraa |

Without the Guru, there is only the darkness of attachment.

ਫਿਰਿ ਫਿਰਿ ਡੁਬੈ ਵਾਰੋ ਵਾਰਾ ॥
fir fir ddubai vaaro vaaraa |

Over and over, time and time again, they are drowned.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਭੇਟੇ ਸਚੁ ਦ੍ਰਿੜਾਏ ਸਚੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਇਆ ॥੮॥
satigur bhette sach drirraae sach naam man bhaaeaa |8|

Meeting the True Guru, Truth is implanted within, and the True Name becomes pleasing to the mind. ||8||

ਸਾਚਾ ਦਰੁ ਸਾਚਾ ਦਰਵਾਰਾ ॥
saachaa dar saachaa daravaaraa |

True is His Door, and True is His Court, His Royal Darbaar.

ਸਚੇ ਸੇਵਹਿ ਸਬਦਿ ਪਿਆਰਾ ॥
sache seveh sabad piaaraa |

The true ones serve Him, through the Beloved Word of the Shabad.

ਸਚੀ ਧੁਨਿ ਸਚੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵਾ ਸਚੇ ਮਾਹਿ ਸਮਾਇਆ ॥੯॥
sachee dhun sache gun gaavaa sache maeh samaaeaa |9|

Singing the Glorious Praises of the True Lord, in the true melody, I am immersed and absorbed in Truth. ||9||

ਘਰੈ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਕੋ ਘਰੁ ਪਾਏ ॥
gharai andar ko ghar paae |

Deep within the home of the self, one finds the home of the Lord.

ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦੇ ਸਹਜਿ ਸੁਭਾਏ ॥
gur kai sabade sahaj subhaae |

Through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, one easily, intuitively finds it.

ਓਥੈ ਸੋਗੁ ਵਿਜੋਗੁ ਨ ਵਿਆਪੈ ਸਹਜੇ ਸਹਜਿ ਸਮਾਇਆ ॥੧੦॥
othai sog vijog na viaapai sahaje sahaj samaaeaa |10|

There, one is not afflicted with sorrow or separation; merge into the Celestial Lord with intuitive ease. ||10||

ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ਦੁਸਟਾ ਕਾ ਵਾਸਾ ॥
doojai bhaae dusattaa kaa vaasaa |

The evil people live in the love of duality.

ਭਉਦੇ ਫਿਰਹਿ ਬਹੁ ਮੋਹ ਪਿਆਸਾ ॥
bhaude fireh bahu moh piaasaa |

They wander around, totally attached and thirsty.

ਕੁਸੰਗਤਿ ਬਹਹਿ ਸਦਾ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਵਹਿ ਦੁਖੋ ਦੁਖੁ ਕਮਾਇਆ ॥੧੧॥
kusangat baheh sadaa dukh paaveh dukho dukh kamaaeaa |11|

They sit in evil gatherings, and suffer in pain forever; they earn pain, nothing but pain. ||11||

ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਬਾਝਹੁ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਨ ਹੋਈ ॥
satigur baajhahu sangat na hoee |

Without the True Guru, there is no Sangat, no Congregation.

ਬਿਨੁ ਸਬਦੇ ਪਾਰੁ ਨ ਪਾਏ ਕੋਈ ॥
bin sabade paar na paae koee |

Without the Shabad, no one can cross over to the other side.

ਸਹਜੇ ਗੁਣ ਰਵਹਿ ਦਿਨੁ ਰਾਤੀ ਜੋਤੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਮਿਲਾਇਆ ॥੧੨॥
sahaje gun raveh din raatee jotee jot milaaeaa |12|

One who intuitively chants God's Glorious Praises day and night - his light merges into the Light. ||12||

ਕਾਇਆ ਬਿਰਖੁ ਪੰਖੀ ਵਿਚਿ ਵਾਸਾ ॥
kaaeaa birakh pankhee vich vaasaa |

The body is the tree; the bird of the soul dwells within it.

ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਚੁਗਹਿ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦਿ ਨਿਵਾਸਾ ॥
amrit chugeh gur sabad nivaasaa |

It drinks in the Ambrosial Nectar, resting in the Word of the Guru's Shabad.

ਉਡਹਿ ਨ ਮੂਲੇ ਨ ਆਵਹਿ ਨ ਜਾਹੀ ਨਿਜ ਘਰਿ ਵਾਸਾ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੧੩॥
auddeh na moole na aaveh na jaahee nij ghar vaasaa paaeaa |13|

It never flies away, and it does not come or go; it dwells within the home of its own self. ||13||

ਕਾਇਆ ਸੋਧਹਿ ਸਬਦੁ ਵੀਚਾਰਹਿ ॥
kaaeaa sodheh sabad veechaareh |

Purify the body, and contemplate the Shabad.

ਮੋਹ ਠਗਉਰੀ ਭਰਮੁ ਨਿਵਾਰਹਿ ॥
moh tthgauree bharam nivaareh |

Remove the poisonous drug of emotional attachment, and eradicate doubt.

ਆਪੇ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਕਰੇ ਸੁਖਦਾਤਾ ਆਪੇ ਮੇਲਿ ਮਿਲਾਇਆ ॥੧੪॥
aape kripaa kare sukhadaataa aape mel milaaeaa |14|

The Giver of peace Himself bestows His Mercy, and unites us in Union with Himself. ||14||
