ਰਾਜਸੁ ਸਾਤਕੁ ਤਾਮਸੁ ਡਰਪਹਿ ਕੇਤੇ ਰੂਪ ਉਪਾਇਆ ॥
raajas saatak taamas ddarapeh kete roop upaaeaa |

Those who embody the energies of sattva-white light, raajas-red passion, and taamas-black darkness, abide in the Fear of God, along with the many created forms.

ਛਲ ਬਪੁਰੀ ਇਹ ਕਉਲਾ ਡਰਪੈ ਅਤਿ ਡਰਪੈ ਧਰਮ ਰਾਇਆ ॥੩॥
chhal bapuree ih kaulaa ddarapai at ddarapai dharam raaeaa |3|

This miserable deceiver Maya abides in the Fear of God; the Righteous Judge of Dharma is utterly afraid of Him as well. ||3||

ਸਗਲ ਸਮਗ੍ਰੀ ਡਰਹਿ ਬਿਆਪੀ ਬਿਨੁ ਡਰ ਕਰਣੈਹਾਰਾ ॥
sagal samagree ddareh biaapee bin ddar karanaihaaraa |

The entire expanse of the Universe is in the Fear of God; only the Creator Lord is without this Fear.

ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਭਗਤਨ ਕਾ ਸੰਗੀ ਭਗਤ ਸੋਹਹਿ ਦਰਬਾਰਾ ॥੪॥੧॥
kahu naanak bhagatan kaa sangee bhagat soheh darabaaraa |4|1|

Says Nanak, God is the companion of His devotees; His devotees look beautiful in the Court of the Lord. ||4||1||

ਮਾਰੂ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥
maaroo mahalaa 5 |

Maaroo, Fifth Mehl:

ਪਾਂਚ ਬਰਖ ਕੋ ਅਨਾਥੁ ਧ੍ਰੂ ਬਾਰਿਕੁ ਹਰਿ ਸਿਮਰਤ ਅਮਰ ਅਟਾਰੇ ॥
paanch barakh ko anaath dhraoo baarik har simarat amar attaare |

The five year old orphan boy Dhroo, by meditating in remembrance on the Lord, became stationary and permanent.

ਪੁਤ੍ਰ ਹੇਤਿ ਨਾਰਾਇਣੁ ਕਹਿਓ ਜਮਕੰਕਰ ਮਾਰਿ ਬਿਦਾਰੇ ॥੧॥
putr het naaraaein kahio jamakankar maar bidaare |1|

For the sake of his son, Ajaamal called out, "O Lord, Naaraayan", who struck down and killed the Messenger of Death. ||1||

ਮੇਰੇ ਠਾਕੁਰ ਕੇਤੇ ਅਗਨਤ ਉਧਾਰੇ ॥
mere tthaakur kete aganat udhaare |

My Lord and Master has saved many, countless beings.

ਮੋਹਿ ਦੀਨ ਅਲਪ ਮਤਿ ਨਿਰਗੁਣ ਪਰਿਓ ਸਰਣਿ ਦੁਆਰੇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
mohi deen alap mat niragun pario saran duaare |1| rahaau |

I am meek, with little or no understanding, and unworthy; I seek protection at the Lord's Door. ||1||Pause||

ਬਾਲਮੀਕੁ ਸੁਪਚਾਰੋ ਤਰਿਓ ਬਧਿਕ ਤਰੇ ਬਿਚਾਰੇ ॥
baalameek supachaaro tario badhik tare bichaare |

Baalmeek the outcaste was saved, and the poor hunter was saved as well.

ਏਕ ਨਿਮਖ ਮਨ ਮਾਹਿ ਅਰਾਧਿਓ ਗਜਪਤਿ ਪਾਰਿ ਉਤਾਰੇ ॥੨॥
ek nimakh man maeh araadhio gajapat paar utaare |2|

The elephant remembered the Lord in his mind for an instant, and so was carried across. ||2||

ਕੀਨੀ ਰਖਿਆ ਭਗਤ ਪ੍ਰਹਿਲਾਦੈ ਹਰਨਾਖਸ ਨਖਹਿ ਬਿਦਾਰੇ ॥
keenee rakhiaa bhagat prahilaadai haranaakhas nakheh bidaare |

He saved His devotee Prahlaad, and tore Harnaakhash with his nails.

ਬਿਦਰੁ ਦਾਸੀ ਸੁਤੁ ਭਇਓ ਪੁਨੀਤਾ ਸਗਲੇ ਕੁਲ ਉਜਾਰੇ ॥੩॥
bidar daasee sut bheio puneetaa sagale kul ujaare |3|

Bidar, the son of a slave-girl, was purified, and all his generations were redeemed. ||3||

ਕਵਨ ਪਰਾਧ ਬਤਾਵਉ ਅਪੁਨੇ ਮਿਥਿਆ ਮੋਹ ਮਗਨਾਰੇ ॥
kavan paraadh bataavau apune mithiaa moh maganaare |

What sins of mine should I speak of? I am intoxicated with false emotional attachment.

ਆਇਓ ਸਾਮ ਨਾਨਕ ਓਟ ਹਰਿ ਕੀ ਲੀਜੈ ਭੁਜਾ ਪਸਾਰੇ ॥੪॥੨॥
aaeio saam naanak ott har kee leejai bhujaa pasaare |4|2|

Nanak has entered the Sanctuary of the Lord; please, reach out and take me into Your embrace. ||4||2||

ਮਾਰੂ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥

Maaroo, Fifth Mehl:

ਵਿਤ ਨਵਿਤ ਭ੍ਰਮਿਓ ਬਹੁ ਭਾਤੀ ਅਨਿਕ ਜਤਨ ਕਰਿ ਧਾਏ ॥
vit navit bhramio bahu bhaatee anik jatan kar dhaae |

For the sake of riches, I wandered around in so many ways; I rushed around, making all sorts of efforts.

ਜੋ ਜੋ ਕਰਮ ਕੀਏ ਹਉ ਹਉਮੈ ਤੇ ਤੇ ਭਏ ਅਜਾਏ ॥੧॥
jo jo karam kee hau haumai te te bhe ajaae |1|

The deeds I did in egotism and pride, have all been done in vain. ||1||

ਅਵਰ ਦਿਨ ਕਾਹੂ ਕਾਜ ਨ ਲਾਏ ॥
avar din kaahoo kaaj na laae |

Other days are of no use to me;

ਸੋ ਦਿਨੁ ਮੋ ਕਉ ਦੀਜੈ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਜੀਉ ਜਾ ਦਿਨ ਹਰਿ ਜਸੁ ਗਾਏ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
so din mo kau deejai prabh jeeo jaa din har jas gaae |1| rahaau |

please bless me with those days, O Dear God, on which I may sing the Lord's Praises. ||1||Pause||

ਪੁਤ੍ਰ ਕਲਤ੍ਰ ਗ੍ਰਿਹ ਦੇਖਿ ਪਸਾਰਾ ਇਸ ਹੀ ਮਹਿ ਉਰਝਾਏ ॥
putr kalatr grih dekh pasaaraa is hee meh urajhaae |

Gazing upon children, spouse, household and possessions, one is entangled in these.

ਮਾਇਆ ਮਦ ਚਾਖਿ ਭਏ ਉਦਮਾਤੇ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਕਬਹੁ ਨ ਗਾਏ ॥੨॥
maaeaa mad chaakh bhe udamaate har har kabahu na gaae |2|

Tasting the wine of Maya, one is intoxicated, and never sings of the Lord, Har, Har. ||2||

ਇਹ ਬਿਧਿ ਖੋਜੀ ਬਹੁ ਪਰਕਾਰਾ ਬਿਨੁ ਸੰਤਨ ਨਹੀ ਪਾਏ ॥
eih bidh khojee bahu parakaaraa bin santan nahee paae |

In this way, I have examined lots of methods, but without the Saints, it is not found.

ਤੁਮ ਦਾਤਾਰ ਵਡੇ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਸੰਮ੍ਰਥ ਮਾਗਨ ਕਉ ਦਾਨੁ ਆਏ ॥੩॥
tum daataar vadde prabh samrath maagan kau daan aae |3|

You are the Great Giver, the great and almighty God; I have come to beg a gift from You. ||3||

ਤਿਆਗਿਓ ਸਗਲਾ ਮਾਨੁ ਮਹਤਾ ਦਾਸ ਰੇਣ ਸਰਣਾਏ ॥
tiaagio sagalaa maan mahataa daas ren saranaae |

Abandoning all pride and self-importance, I have sought the Sanctuary of the dust of the feet of the Lord's slave.

ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਮਿਲਿ ਭਏ ਏਕੈ ਮਹਾ ਅਨੰਦ ਸੁਖ ਪਾਏ ॥੪॥੩॥
kahu naanak har mil bhe ekai mahaa anand sukh paae |4|3|

Says Nanak, meeting with the Lord, I have become one with Him; I have found supreme bliss and peace. ||4||3||

Maaroo, Fifth Mehl:

ਕਵਨ ਥਾਨ ਧੀਰਿਓ ਹੈ ਨਾਮਾ ਕਵਨ ਬਸਤੁ ਅਹੰਕਾਰਾ ॥
kavan thaan dheerio hai naamaa kavan basat ahankaaraa |

In what place is the Name established? Where does egotism dwell?

ਕਵਨ ਚਿਹਨ ਸੁਨਿ ਊਪਰਿ ਛੋਹਿਓ ਮੁਖ ਤੇ ਸੁਨਿ ਕਰਿ ਗਾਰਾ ॥੧॥
kavan chihan sun aoopar chhohio mukh te sun kar gaaraa |1|

What injury have you suffered, listening to abuse from someone else's mouth? ||1||

ਸੁਨਹੁ ਰੇ ਤੂ ਕਉਨੁ ਕਹਾ ਤੇ ਆਇਓ ॥
sunahu re too kaun kahaa te aaeio |

Listen: who are you, and where did you come from?

ਏਤੀ ਨ ਜਾਨਉ ਕੇਤੀਕ ਮੁਦਤਿ ਚਲਤੇ ਖਬਰਿ ਨ ਪਾਇਓ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
etee na jaanau keteek mudat chalate khabar na paaeio |1| rahaau |

You don't even know how long you will stay here; you have no hint of when you shall leave. ||1||Pause||

ਸਹਨ ਸੀਲ ਪਵਨ ਅਰੁ ਪਾਣੀ ਬਸੁਧਾ ਖਿਮਾ ਨਿਭਰਾਤੇ ॥
sahan seel pavan ar paanee basudhaa khimaa nibharaate |

Wind and water have patience and tolerance; the earth has compassion and forgiveness, no doubt.

ਪੰਚ ਤਤ ਮਿਲਿ ਭਇਓ ਸੰਜੋਗਾ ਇਨ ਮਹਿ ਕਵਨ ਦੁਰਾਤੇ ॥੨॥
panch tat mil bheio sanjogaa in meh kavan duraate |2|

The union of the five tattvas - the five elements - has brought you into being. Which of these is evil? ||2||

ਜਿਨਿ ਰਚਿ ਰਚਿਆ ਪੁਰਖਿ ਬਿਧਾਤੈ ਨਾਲੇ ਹਉਮੈ ਪਾਈ ॥
jin rach rachiaa purakh bidhaatai naale haumai paaee |

The Primal Lord, the Architect of Destiny, formed your form; He also burdened you with egotism.

ਜਨਮ ਮਰਣੁ ਉਸ ਹੀ ਕਉ ਹੈ ਰੇ ਓਹਾ ਆਵੈ ਜਾਈ ॥੩॥
janam maran us hee kau hai re ohaa aavai jaaee |3|

He alone is born and dies; He alone comes and goes. ||3||

ਬਰਨੁ ਚਿਹਨੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਕਿਛੁ ਰਚਨਾ ਮਿਥਿਆ ਸਗਲ ਪਸਾਰਾ ॥
baran chihan naahee kichh rachanaa mithiaa sagal pasaaraa |

Nothing of the color and the form of the creation shall remain; the entire expanse is transitory.

ਭਣਤਿ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਜਬ ਖੇਲੁ ਉਝਾਰੈ ਤਬ ਏਕੈ ਏਕੰਕਾਰਾ ॥੪॥੪॥
bhanat naanak jab khel ujhaarai tab ekai ekankaaraa |4|4|

Prays Nanak, when He brings His play to its close, then only the One, the One Lord remains. ||4||4||
