ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਾਚਾ ਸਬਦਿ ਪਛਾਤਾ ॥
guramukh saachaa sabad pachhaataa |

The Gurmukh realizes the True Word of the Shabad.

ਨਾ ਤਿਸੁ ਕੁਟੰਬੁ ਨਾ ਤਿਸੁ ਮਾਤਾ ॥
naa tis kuttanb naa tis maataa |

He has no family, and he has no mother.

ਏਕੋ ਏਕੁ ਰਵਿਆ ਸਭ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਸਭਨਾ ਜੀਆ ਕਾ ਆਧਾਰੀ ਹੇ ॥੧੩॥
eko ek raviaa sabh antar sabhanaa jeea kaa aadhaaree he |13|

The One and Only Lord is pervading and permeating deep within the nucleus of all. He is the Support of all beings. ||13||

ਹਉਮੈ ਮੇਰਾ ਦੂਜਾ ਭਾਇਆ ॥
haumai meraa doojaa bhaaeaa |

Egotism, possessiveness, and the love of duality

ਕਿਛੁ ਨ ਚਲੈ ਧੁਰਿ ਖਸਮਿ ਲਿਖਿ ਪਾਇਆ ॥
kichh na chalai dhur khasam likh paaeaa |

- none of these shall go along with you; such is the pre-ordained will of our Lord and Master.

ਗੁਰ ਸਾਚੇ ਤੇ ਸਾਚੁ ਕਮਾਵਹਿ ਸਾਚੈ ਦੂਖ ਨਿਵਾਰੀ ਹੇ ॥੧੪॥
gur saache te saach kamaaveh saachai dookh nivaaree he |14|

Through the True Guru, practice Truth, and the True Lord shall take away your pains. ||14||

ਜਾ ਤੂ ਦੇਹਿ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਏ ॥
jaa too dehi sadaa sukh paae |

If You so bless me, then I shall find lasting peace.

ਸਾਚੈ ਸਬਦੇ ਸਾਚੁ ਕਮਾਏ ॥
saachai sabade saach kamaae |

Through the True Word of the Shabad, I live the Truth.

ਅੰਦਰੁ ਸਾਚਾ ਮਨੁ ਤਨੁ ਸਾਚਾ ਭਗਤਿ ਭਰੇ ਭੰਡਾਰੀ ਹੇ ॥੧੫॥
andar saachaa man tan saachaa bhagat bhare bhanddaaree he |15|

The True Lord is within me, and my mind and body have become True. I am blessed with the overflowing treasure of devotional worship. ||15||

ਆਪੇ ਵੇਖੈ ਹੁਕਮਿ ਚਲਾਏ ॥
aape vekhai hukam chalaae |

He Himself watches, and issues His Command.

ਅਪਣਾ ਭਾਣਾ ਆਪਿ ਕਰਾਏ ॥
apanaa bhaanaa aap karaae |

He Himself inspires us to obey His Will.

ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮਿ ਰਤੇ ਬੈਰਾਗੀ ਮਨੁ ਤਨੁ ਰਸਨਾ ਨਾਮਿ ਸਵਾਰੀ ਹੇ ॥੧੬॥੭॥
naanak naam rate bairaagee man tan rasanaa naam savaaree he |16|7|

O Nanak, only those who are attuned to the Naam are detached; their minds, bodies and tongues are embellished with the Naam. ||16||7||

ਮਾਰੂ ਮਹਲਾ ੩ ॥
maaroo mahalaa 3 |

Maaroo, Third Mehl:

ਆਪੇ ਆਪੁ ਉਪਾਇ ਉਪੰਨਾ ॥
aape aap upaae upanaa |

He Himself created Himself, and came into being.

ਸਭ ਮਹਿ ਵਰਤੈ ਏਕੁ ਪਰਛੰਨਾ ॥
sabh meh varatai ek parachhanaa |

The One Lord is pervading in all, remaining hidden.

ਸਭਨਾ ਸਾਰ ਕਰੇ ਜਗਜੀਵਨੁ ਜਿਨਿ ਅਪਣਾ ਆਪੁ ਪਛਾਤਾ ਹੇ ॥੧॥
sabhanaa saar kare jagajeevan jin apanaa aap pachhaataa he |1|

The Lord, the Life of the world, takes care of all. Whoever knows his own self, realizes God. ||1||

ਜਿਨਿ ਬ੍ਰਹਮਾ ਬਿਸਨੁ ਮਹੇਸੁ ਉਪਾਏ ॥
jin brahamaa bisan mahes upaae |

He who created Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva,

ਸਿਰਿ ਸਿਰਿ ਧੰਧੈ ਆਪੇ ਲਾਏ ॥
sir sir dhandhai aape laae |

links each and every being to its tasks.

ਜਿਸੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਤਿਸੁ ਆਪੇ ਮੇਲੇ ਜਿਨਿ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਏਕੋ ਜਾਤਾ ਹੇ ॥੨॥
jis bhaavai tis aape mele jin guramukh eko jaataa he |2|

He merges into Himself, whoever is pleasing to His Will. The Gurmukh knows the One Lord. ||2||

ਆਵਾ ਗਉਣੁ ਹੈ ਸੰਸਾਰਾ ॥
aavaa gaun hai sansaaraa |

The world is coming and going in reincarnation.

ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹੁ ਬਹੁ ਚਿਤੈ ਬਿਕਾਰਾ ॥
maaeaa mohu bahu chitai bikaaraa |

Attached to Maya, it dwells on its many sins.

ਥਿਰੁ ਸਾਚਾ ਸਾਲਾਹੀ ਸਦ ਹੀ ਜਿਨਿ ਗੁਰ ਕਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਪਛਾਤਾ ਹੇ ॥੩॥
thir saachaa saalaahee sad hee jin gur kaa sabad pachhaataa he |3|

One who realizes the Word of the Guru's Shabad, praises forever the eternal, unchanging True Lord. ||3||

ਇਕਿ ਮੂਲਿ ਲਗੇ ਓਨੀ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥
eik mool lage onee sukh paaeaa |

Some are attached to the root - they find peace.

ਡਾਲੀ ਲਾਗੇ ਤਿਨੀ ਜਨਮੁ ਗਵਾਇਆ ॥
ddaalee laage tinee janam gavaaeaa |

But those who are attached to the branches, waste their lives away uselessly.

ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਫਲ ਤਿਨ ਜਨ ਕਉ ਲਾਗੇ ਜੋ ਬੋਲਹਿ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਬਾਤਾ ਹੇ ॥੪॥
amrit fal tin jan kau laage jo boleh amrit baataa he |4|

Those humble beings, who chant the Name of the Ambrosial Lord, produce the ambrosial fruit. ||4||

ਹਮ ਗੁਣ ਨਾਹੀ ਕਿਆ ਬੋਲਹ ਬੋਲ ॥
ham gun naahee kiaa bolah bol |

I have no virtues; what words should I speak?

ਤੂ ਸਭਨਾ ਦੇਖਹਿ ਤੋਲਹਿ ਤੋਲ ॥
too sabhanaa dekheh toleh tol |

You see all, and weigh them on Your scale.

ਜਿਉ ਭਾਵੈ ਤਿਉ ਰਾਖਹਿ ਰਹਣਾ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਏਕੋ ਜਾਤਾ ਹੇ ॥੫॥
jiau bhaavai tiau raakheh rahanaa guramukh eko jaataa he |5|

By Your will, You preserve me, and so do I remain. The Gurmukh knows the One Lord. ||5||

ਜਾ ਤੁਧੁ ਭਾਣਾ ਤਾ ਸਚੀ ਕਾਰੈ ਲਾਏ ॥
jaa tudh bhaanaa taa sachee kaarai laae |

According to Your Will, You link me to my true tasks.

ਅਵਗਣ ਛੋਡਿ ਗੁਣ ਮਾਹਿ ਸਮਾਏ ॥
avagan chhodd gun maeh samaae |

Renouncing vice, I am immersed in virtue.

ਗੁਣ ਮਹਿ ਏਕੋ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਸਾਚਾ ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਪਛਾਤਾ ਹੇ ॥੬॥
gun meh eko niramal saachaa gur kai sabad pachhaataa he |6|

The One Immaculate True Lord abides in virtue; through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, He is realized. ||6||

ਜਹ ਦੇਖਾ ਤਹ ਏਕੋ ਸੋਈ ॥
jah dekhaa tah eko soee |

Wherever I look, there I see Him.

ਦੂਜੀ ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਸਬਦੇ ਖੋਈ ॥
doojee duramat sabade khoee |

Duality and evil-mindedness are destroyed through the Shabad.

ਏਕਸੁ ਮਹਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਏਕੁ ਸਮਾਣਾ ਅਪਣੈ ਰੰਗਿ ਸਦ ਰਾਤਾ ਹੇ ॥੭॥
ekas meh prabh ek samaanaa apanai rang sad raataa he |7|

The One Lord God is immersed in His Oneness. He is attuned forever to His own delight. ||7||

ਕਾਇਆ ਕਮਲੁ ਹੈ ਕੁਮਲਾਣਾ ॥
kaaeaa kamal hai kumalaanaa |

The body-lotus is withering away,

ਮਨਮੁਖੁ ਸਬਦੁ ਨ ਬੁਝੈ ਇਆਣਾ ॥
manamukh sabad na bujhai eaanaa |

but the ignorant, self-willed manmukh does not understand the Shabad.

ਗੁਰਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਕਾਇਆ ਖੋਜੇ ਪਾਏ ਜਗਜੀਵਨੁ ਦਾਤਾ ਹੇ ॥੮॥
guraparasaadee kaaeaa khoje paae jagajeevan daataa he |8|

By Guru's Grace, he searches his body, and finds the Great Giver, the Life of the world. ||8||

ਕੋਟ ਗਹੀ ਕੇ ਪਾਪ ਨਿਵਾਰੇ ॥
kott gahee ke paap nivaare |

The Lord frees up the body-fortress, which was seized by sins,

ਸਦਾ ਹਰਿ ਜੀਉ ਰਾਖੈ ਉਰ ਧਾਰੇ ॥
sadaa har jeeo raakhai ur dhaare |

when one keeps the Dear Lord enshrined forever in the heart.

ਜੋ ਇਛੇ ਸੋਈ ਫਲੁ ਪਾਏ ਜਿਉ ਰੰਗੁ ਮਜੀਠੈ ਰਾਤਾ ਹੇ ॥੯॥
jo ichhe soee fal paae jiau rang majeetthai raataa he |9|

The fruits of his desires are obtained, and he is dyed in the permanent color of the Lord's Love. ||9||

ਮਨਮੁਖੁ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਕਥੇ ਨ ਹੋਈ ॥
manamukh giaan kathe na hoee |

The self-willed manmukh speaks of spiritual wisdom, but does not understand.

ਫਿਰਿ ਫਿਰਿ ਆਵੈ ਠਉਰ ਨ ਕੋਈ ॥
fir fir aavai tthaur na koee |

Again and again, he comes into the world, but he finds no place of rest.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਸਦਾ ਸਾਲਾਹੇ ਜੁਗਿ ਜੁਗਿ ਏਕੋ ਜਾਤਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੦॥
guramukh giaan sadaa saalaahe jug jug eko jaataa he |10|

The Gurmukh is spiritually wise, and praises the Lord forever. Throughout each and every age, the Gurmukh knows the One Lord. ||10||

ਮਨਮੁਖੁ ਕਾਰ ਕਰੇ ਸਭਿ ਦੁਖ ਸਬਾਏ ॥
manamukh kaar kare sabh dukh sabaae |

All the deeds which the manmukh does bring pain - nothing but pain.

ਅੰਤਰਿ ਸਬਦੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਕਿਉ ਦਰਿ ਜਾਏ ॥
antar sabad naahee kiau dar jaae |

The Word of the Shabad is not within him; how can he go to the Court of the Lord?

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਬਦੁ ਵਸੈ ਮਨਿ ਸਾਚਾ ਸਦ ਸੇਵੇ ਸੁਖਦਾਤਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੧॥
guramukh sabad vasai man saachaa sad seve sukhadaataa he |11|

The True Shabad dwells deep within the mind of the Gurmukh; he serves the Giver of peace forever. ||11||
