ਹਰਿ ਪੜੀਐ ਹਰਿ ਬੁਝੀਐ ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਨਾਮਿ ਉਧਾਰਾ ॥
har parreeai har bujheeai guramatee naam udhaaraa |

Study the Lord's Name, and understand the Lord's Name; follow the Guru's Teachings, and through the Naam, you shall be saved.

ਗੁਰਿ ਪੂਰੈ ਪੂਰੀ ਮਤਿ ਹੈ ਪੂਰੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਬੀਚਾਰਾ ॥
gur poorai pooree mat hai poorai sabad beechaaraa |

Perfect are the Teachings of the Perfect Guru; contemplate the Perfect Word of the Shabad.

ਅਠਸਠਿ ਤੀਰਥ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਹੈ ਕਿਲਵਿਖ ਕਾਟਣਹਾਰਾ ॥੨॥
atthasatth teerath har naam hai kilavikh kaattanahaaraa |2|

The Lord's Name is the sixty-eight sacred shrines of pilgrimage, and the Eradicator of sins. ||2||

ਜਲੁ ਬਿਲੋਵੈ ਜਲੁ ਮਥੈ ਤਤੁ ਲੋੜੈ ਅੰਧੁ ਅਗਿਆਨਾ ॥
jal bilovai jal mathai tat lorrai andh agiaanaa |

The blind ignorant mortal stirs the water and churns the water, wishing to obtain butter.

ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਦਧਿ ਮਥੀਐ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਪਾਈਐ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਧਾਨਾ ॥
guramatee dadh matheeai amrit paaeeai naam nidhaanaa |

Following the Guru's Teachings, one churns the cream, and the treasure of the Ambrosial Naam is obtained.

ਮਨਮੁਖ ਤਤੁ ਨ ਜਾਣਨੀ ਪਸੂ ਮਾਹਿ ਸਮਾਨਾ ॥੩॥
manamukh tat na jaananee pasoo maeh samaanaa |3|

The self-willed manmukh is a beast; he does not know the essence of reality that is contained within himself. ||3||

ਹਉਮੈ ਮੇਰਾ ਮਰੀ ਮਰੁ ਮਰਿ ਜੰਮੈ ਵਾਰੋ ਵਾਰ ॥
haumai meraa maree mar mar jamai vaaro vaar |

Dying in egotism and self-conceit, one dies, and dies again, only to be reincarnated over and over again.

ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦੇ ਜੇ ਮਰੈ ਫਿਰਿ ਮਰੈ ਨ ਦੂਜੀ ਵਾਰ ॥
gur kai sabade je marai fir marai na doojee vaar |

But when he dies in the Word of the Guru's Shabad, then he does not die, ever again.

ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਜਗਜੀਵਨੁ ਮਨਿ ਵਸੈ ਸਭਿ ਕੁਲ ਉਧਾਰਣਹਾਰ ॥੪॥
guramatee jagajeevan man vasai sabh kul udhaaranahaar |4|

When he follows the Guru's Teachings, and enshrines the Lord, the Life of the World, within his mind, he redeems all his generations. ||4||

ਸਚਾ ਵਖਰੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਹੈ ਸਚਾ ਵਾਪਾਰਾ ॥
sachaa vakhar naam hai sachaa vaapaaraa |

The Naam, the Name of the Lord, is the true object, the true commodity.

ਲਾਹਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਸੰਸਾਰਿ ਹੈ ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਵੀਚਾਰਾ ॥
laahaa naam sansaar hai guramatee veechaaraa |

The Naam is the only true profit in this world. Follow the Guru's Teachings, and contemplate it.

ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ਕਾਰ ਕਮਾਵਣੀ ਨਿਤ ਤੋਟਾ ਸੈਸਾਰਾ ॥੫॥
doojai bhaae kaar kamaavanee nit tottaa saisaaraa |5|

To work in the love of duality, brings constant loss in this world. ||5||

ਸਾਚੀ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਥਾਨੁ ਸਚੁ ਸਚੇ ਘਰ ਬਾਰਾ ॥
saachee sangat thaan sach sache ghar baaraa |

True is one's association, true is one's place,

ਸਚਾ ਭੋਜਨੁ ਭਾਉ ਸਚੁ ਸਚੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਅਧਾਰਾ ॥
sachaa bhojan bhaau sach sach naam adhaaraa |

And true is one's hearth and home, when one has the support of the Naam.

ਸਚੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਸੰਤੋਖਿਆ ਸਚਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਵੀਚਾਰਾ ॥੬॥
sachee baanee santokhiaa sachaa sabad veechaaraa |6|

Contemplating the True Word of the Guru's Bani, and the True Word of the Shabad, one becomes content. ||6||

ਰਸ ਭੋਗਣ ਪਾਤਿਸਾਹੀਆ ਦੁਖ ਸੁਖ ਸੰਘਾਰਾ ॥
ras bhogan paatisaaheea dukh sukh sanghaaraa |

Enjoying princely pleasures, one shall be destroyed in pain and pleasure.

ਮੋਟਾ ਨਾਉ ਧਰਾਈਐ ਗਲਿ ਅਉਗਣ ਭਾਰਾ ॥
mottaa naau dharaaeeai gal aaugan bhaaraa |

Adopting a name of greatness, one strings heavy sins around his neck.

ਮਾਣਸ ਦਾਤਿ ਨ ਹੋਵਈ ਤੂ ਦਾਤਾ ਸਾਰਾ ॥੭॥
maanas daat na hovee too daataa saaraa |7|

Mankind cannot give gifts; You alone are the Giver of everything. ||7||

ਅਗਮ ਅਗੋਚਰੁ ਤੂ ਧਣੀ ਅਵਿਗਤੁ ਅਪਾਰਾ ॥
agam agochar too dhanee avigat apaaraa |

You are inaccessible and unfathomable; O Lord, You are imperishable and infinite.

ਗੁਰਸਬਦੀ ਦਰੁ ਜੋਈਐ ਮੁਕਤੇ ਭੰਡਾਰਾ ॥
gurasabadee dar joeeai mukate bhanddaaraa |

Through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, seeking at the Lord's Door, one finds the treasure of liberation.

ਨਾਨਕ ਮੇਲੁ ਨ ਚੂਕਈ ਸਾਚੇ ਵਾਪਾਰਾ ॥੮॥੧॥
naanak mel na chookee saache vaapaaraa |8|1|

O Nanak, this union is not broken, if one deals in the merchandise of Truth. ||8||1||

ਮਾਰੂ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥
maaroo mahalaa 1 |

Maaroo, First Mehl:

ਬਿਖੁ ਬੋਹਿਥਾ ਲਾਦਿਆ ਦੀਆ ਸਮੁੰਦ ਮੰਝਾਰਿ ॥
bikh bohithaa laadiaa deea samund manjhaar |

The boat is loaded with sin and corruption, and launched into the sea.

ਕੰਧੀ ਦਿਸਿ ਨ ਆਵਈ ਨਾ ਉਰਵਾਰੁ ਨ ਪਾਰੁ ॥
kandhee dis na aavee naa uravaar na paar |

The shore cannot be seen on this side, nor on the shore beyond.

ਵੰਝੀ ਹਾਥਿ ਨ ਖੇਵਟੂ ਜਲੁ ਸਾਗਰੁ ਅਸਰਾਲੁ ॥੧॥
vanjhee haath na khevattoo jal saagar asaraal |1|

There are no oars, nor any boatmen, to cross over the terrifying world-ocean. ||1||

ਬਾਬਾ ਜਗੁ ਫਾਥਾ ਮਹਾ ਜਾਲਿ ॥
baabaa jag faathaa mahaa jaal |

O Baba, the world is caught in the great noose.

ਗੁਰਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਉਬਰੇ ਸਚਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਮਾਲਿ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
guraparasaadee ubare sachaa naam samaal |1| rahaau |

By Guru's Grace, they are saved, contemplating the True Name. ||1||Pause||

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਹੈ ਬੋਹਿਥਾ ਸਬਦਿ ਲੰਘਾਵਣਹਾਰੁ ॥
satiguroo hai bohithaa sabad langhaavanahaar |

The True Guru is the boat; the Word of the Shabad will carry them across.

ਤਿਥੈ ਪਵਣੁ ਨ ਪਾਵਕੋ ਨਾ ਜਲੁ ਨਾ ਆਕਾਰੁ ॥
tithai pavan na paavako naa jal naa aakaar |

There is neither wind nor fire, neither water nor form there.

ਤਿਥੈ ਸਚਾ ਸਚਿ ਨਾਇ ਭਵਜਲ ਤਾਰਣਹਾਰੁ ॥੨॥
tithai sachaa sach naae bhavajal taaranahaar |2|

The True Name of the True Lord is there; it carries them across the terrifying world-ocean. ||2||

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਲੰਘੇ ਸੇ ਪਾਰਿ ਪਏ ਸਚੇ ਸਿਉ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਇ ॥
guramukh langhe se paar pe sache siau liv laae |

The Gurmukhs reach the shore beyond, lovingly focusing on the True Lord.

ਆਵਾ ਗਉਣੁ ਨਿਵਾਰਿਆ ਜੋਤੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਮਿਲਾਇ ॥
aavaa gaun nivaariaa jotee jot milaae |

Their comings and goings are ended, and their light merges into the Light.

ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਸਹਜੁ ਊਪਜੈ ਸਚੇ ਰਹੈ ਸਮਾਇ ॥੩॥
guramatee sahaj aoopajai sache rahai samaae |3|

Following the Guru's Teachings, intuitive peace wells up within them, and they remain merged in the True Lord. ||3||

ਸਪੁ ਪਿੜਾਈ ਪਾਈਐ ਬਿਖੁ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਮਨਿ ਰੋਸੁ ॥
sap pirraaee paaeeai bikh antar man ros |

The snake may be locked in a basket, but it is still poisonous, and the anger within its mind remains.

ਪੂਰਬਿ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਪਾਈਐ ਕਿਸ ਨੋ ਦੀਜੈ ਦੋਸੁ ॥
poorab likhiaa paaeeai kis no deejai dos |

One obtains what is pre-ordained; why does he blame others?

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਗਾਰੜੁ ਜੇ ਸੁਣੇ ਮੰਨੇ ਨਾਉ ਸੰਤੋਸੁ ॥੪॥
guramukh gaararr je sune mane naau santos |4|

If one, as Gurmukh, hears and believes in the Name, the charm against poison, his mind becomes content. ||4||

ਮਾਗਰਮਛੁ ਫਹਾਈਐ ਕੁੰਡੀ ਜਾਲੁ ਵਤਾਇ ॥
maagaramachh fahaaeeai kunddee jaal vataae |

The crocodile is caught by the hook and line;

ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਫਾਥਾ ਫਾਹੀਐ ਫਿਰਿ ਫਿਰਿ ਪਛੋਤਾਇ ॥
duramat faathaa faaheeai fir fir pachhotaae |

caught in the trap of evil-mindedness, he regrets and repents, again and again.

ਜੰਮਣ ਮਰਣੁ ਨ ਸੁਝਈ ਕਿਰਤੁ ਨ ਮੇਟਿਆ ਜਾਇ ॥੫॥
jaman maran na sujhee kirat na mettiaa jaae |5|

He does not understand birth and death; the inscription of one's past actions cannot be erased. ||5||

ਹਉਮੈ ਬਿਖੁ ਪਾਇ ਜਗਤੁ ਉਪਾਇਆ ਸਬਦੁ ਵਸੈ ਬਿਖੁ ਜਾਇ ॥
haumai bikh paae jagat upaaeaa sabad vasai bikh jaae |

Injecting the poison of egotism, the world was created; with the Shabad enshrined within, the poison is eliminated.

ਜਰਾ ਜੋਹਿ ਨ ਸਕਈ ਸਚਿ ਰਹੈ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਇ ॥
jaraa johi na sakee sach rahai liv laae |

Old age cannot torment one who remains lovingly absorbed in the True Lord.

ਜੀਵਨ ਮੁਕਤੁ ਸੋ ਆਖੀਐ ਜਿਸੁ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਹਉਮੈ ਜਾਇ ॥੬॥
jeevan mukat so aakheeai jis vichahu haumai jaae |6|

He alone is called Jivan-Mikta, liberated while yet alive, from within whom egotism is eradicated. ||6||
