ਨਾਵਹੁ ਭੁਲੀ ਚੋਟਾ ਖਾਏ ॥
naavahu bhulee chottaa khaae |

Wandering from the Name, he endures beatings.

ਬਹੁਤੁ ਸਿਆਣਪ ਭਰਮੁ ਨ ਜਾਏ ॥
bahut siaanap bharam na jaae |

Even great cleverness does not dispel doubt.

ਪਚਿ ਪਚਿ ਮੁਏ ਅਚੇਤ ਨ ਚੇਤਹਿ ਅਜਗਰਿ ਭਾਰਿ ਲਦਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੮॥
pach pach mue achet na cheteh ajagar bhaar ladaaee he |8|

The unconscious fool does not remain conscious of the Lord; he putrifies and rots away to death, carrying his heavy load of sin. ||8||

ਬਿਨੁ ਬਾਦ ਬਿਰੋਧਹਿ ਕੋਈ ਨਾਹੀ ॥
bin baad birodheh koee naahee |

No one is free of conflict and strife.

ਮੈ ਦੇਖਾਲਿਹੁ ਤਿਸੁ ਸਾਲਾਹੀ ॥
mai dekhaalihu tis saalaahee |

Show me anyone who is, and I will praise him.

ਮਨੁ ਤਨੁ ਅਰਪਿ ਮਿਲੈ ਜਗਜੀਵਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਸਿਉ ਬਣਤ ਬਣਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੯॥
man tan arap milai jagajeevan har siau banat banaaee he |9|

Dedicating mind and body to God, one meets the Lord, the Life of the World, and becomes just like Him. ||9||

ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕੀ ਗਤਿ ਮਿਤਿ ਕੋਇ ਨ ਪਾਵੈ ॥
prabh kee gat mit koe na paavai |

No one knows the state and extent of God.

ਜੇ ਕੋ ਵਡਾ ਕਹਾਇ ਵਡਾਈ ਖਾਵੈ ॥
je ko vaddaa kahaae vaddaaee khaavai |

Whoever calls himself great, will be eaten by his greatness.

ਸਾਚੇ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਤੋਟਿ ਨ ਦਾਤੀ ਸਗਲੀ ਤਿਨਹਿ ਉਪਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੦॥
saache saahib tott na daatee sagalee tineh upaaee he |10|

There is no lack of gifts of our True Lord and Master. He created all. ||10||

ਵਡੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਵੇਪਰਵਾਹੇ ॥
vaddee vaddiaaee veparavaahe |

Great is the glorious greatness of the independent Lord.

ਆਪਿ ਉਪਾਏ ਦਾਨੁ ਸਮਾਹੇ ॥
aap upaae daan samaahe |

He Himself created, and gives sustanance to all.

ਆਪਿ ਦਇਆਲੁ ਦੂਰਿ ਨਹੀ ਦਾਤਾ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਸਹਜਿ ਰਜਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੧॥
aap deaal door nahee daataa miliaa sahaj rajaaee he |11|

The Merciful Lord is not far away; the Great Giver spontaneously unites with Himself, by His Will. ||11||

ਇਕਿ ਸੋਗੀ ਇਕਿ ਰੋਗਿ ਵਿਆਪੇ ॥
eik sogee ik rog viaape |

Some are sad, and some are afflicted with disease.

ਜੋ ਕਿਛੁ ਕਰੇ ਸੁ ਆਪੇ ਆਪੇ ॥
jo kichh kare su aape aape |

Whatever God does, He does by Himself.

ਭਗਤਿ ਭਾਉ ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਮਤਿ ਪੂਰੀ ਅਨਹਦਿ ਸਬਦਿ ਲਖਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੨॥
bhagat bhaau gur kee mat pooree anahad sabad lakhaaee he |12|

Through loving devotion, and the Perfect Teachings of the Guru, the unstruck sound current of the Shabad is realized. ||12||

ਇਕਿ ਨਾਗੇ ਭੂਖੇ ਭਵਹਿ ਭਵਾਏ ॥
eik naage bhookhe bhaveh bhavaae |

Some wander and roam around, hungry and naked.

ਇਕਿ ਹਠੁ ਕਰਿ ਮਰਹਿ ਨ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਪਾਏ ॥
eik hatth kar mareh na keemat paae |

Some act in stubbornness and die, but do not know the value of God.

ਗਤਿ ਅਵਿਗਤ ਕੀ ਸਾਰ ਨ ਜਾਣੈ ਬੂਝੈ ਸਬਦੁ ਕਮਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੩॥
gat avigat kee saar na jaanai boojhai sabad kamaaee he |13|

They do not know the difference between good and bad; this is understood only through the practice of the Word of the Shabad. ||13||

ਇਕਿ ਤੀਰਥਿ ਨਾਵਹਿ ਅੰਨੁ ਨ ਖਾਵਹਿ ॥
eik teerath naaveh an na khaaveh |

Some bathe at sacred shrines and refuse to eat.

ਇਕਿ ਅਗਨਿ ਜਲਾਵਹਿ ਦੇਹ ਖਪਾਵਹਿ ॥
eik agan jalaaveh deh khapaaveh |

Some torment their bodies in burning fire.

ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨੁ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨ ਹੋਈ ਕਿਤੁ ਬਿਧਿ ਪਾਰਿ ਲੰਘਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੪॥
raam naam bin mukat na hoee kit bidh paar langhaaee he |14|

Without the Lord's Name, liberation is not obtained; how can anyone cross over? ||14||

ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਛੋਡਹਿ ਉਝੜਿ ਜਾਈ ॥
guramat chhoddeh ujharr jaaee |

Abandoning the Guru's Teachings, some wander in the wilderness.

ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਰਾਮੁ ਨ ਜਪੈ ਅਵਾਈ ॥
manamukh raam na japai avaaee |

The self-willed manmukhs are destitute; they do not meditate on the Lord.

ਪਚਿ ਪਚਿ ਬੂਡਹਿ ਕੂੜੁ ਕਮਾਵਹਿ ਕੂੜਿ ਕਾਲੁ ਬੈਰਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੫॥
pach pach booddeh koorr kamaaveh koorr kaal bairaaee he |15|

They are ruined, destroyed and drowned from practicing falsehood; death is the enemy of the false. ||15||

ਹੁਕਮੇ ਆਵੈ ਹੁਕਮੇ ਜਾਵੈ ॥
hukame aavai hukame jaavai |

By the Hukam of the Lord's Command, they come, and by the Hukam of His Command, they go.

ਬੂਝੈ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਸੋ ਸਾਚਿ ਸਮਾਵੈ ॥
boojhai hukam so saach samaavai |

One who realizes His Hukam, merges in the True Lord.

ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾਚੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਵੈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਕਾਰ ਕਮਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੬॥੫॥
naanak saach milai man bhaavai guramukh kaar kamaaee he |16|5|

O Nanak, he merges in the True Lord, and his mind is pleased with the Lord. The Gurmukhs do His work. ||16||5||

ਮਾਰੂ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥
maaroo mahalaa 1 |

Maaroo, First Mehl:

ਆਪੇ ਕਰਤਾ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਬਿਧਾਤਾ ॥
aape karataa purakh bidhaataa |

He Himself is the Creator Lord, the Architect of Destiny.

ਜਿਨਿ ਆਪੇ ਆਪਿ ਉਪਾਇ ਪਛਾਤਾ ॥
jin aape aap upaae pachhaataa |

He evaluates those whom He Himself has created.

ਆਪੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਆਪੇ ਸੇਵਕੁ ਆਪੇ ਸ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਉਪਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧॥
aape satigur aape sevak aape srisatt upaaee he |1|

He Himself is the True Guru, and He Himself is the servant; He Himself created the Universe. ||1||

ਆਪੇ ਨੇੜੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਦੂਰੇ ॥
aape nerrai naahee doore |

He is near at hand, not far away.

ਬੂਝਹਿ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸੇ ਜਨ ਪੂਰੇ ॥
boojheh guramukh se jan poore |

The Gurmukhs understand Him; perfect are those humble beings.

ਤਿਨ ਕੀ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਲਾਹਾ ਗੁਰ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਏਹ ਵਡਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੨॥
tin kee sangat ahinis laahaa gur sangat eh vaddaaee he |2|

Associating with them night and day is profitable. This is the glorious greatness of associating with the Guru. ||2||

ਜੁਗਿ ਜੁਗਿ ਸੰਤ ਭਲੇ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਤੇਰੇ ॥
jug jug sant bhale prabh tere |

Throughout the ages, Your Saints are holy and sublime, O God.

ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵਹਿ ਰਸਨ ਰਸੇਰੇ ॥
har gun gaaveh rasan rasere |

They sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord, savoring it with their tongues.

ਉਸਤਤਿ ਕਰਹਿ ਪਰਹਰਿ ਦੁਖੁ ਦਾਲਦੁ ਜਿਨ ਨਾਹੀ ਚਿੰਤ ਪਰਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੩॥
ausatat kareh parahar dukh daalad jin naahee chint paraaee he |3|

They chant His Praises, and their pain and poverty are taken away; they are not afraid of anyone else. ||3||

ਓਇ ਜਾਗਤ ਰਹਹਿ ਨ ਸੂਤੇ ਦੀਸਹਿ ॥
oe jaagat raheh na soote deeseh |

They remain awake and aware, and do not appear to sleep.

ਸੰਗਤਿ ਕੁਲ ਤਾਰੇ ਸਾਚੁ ਪਰੀਸਹਿ ॥
sangat kul taare saach pareeseh |

They serve up Truth, and so save their companions and relatives.

ਕਲਿਮਲ ਮੈਲੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਤੇ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਓਇ ਰਹਹਿ ਭਗਤਿ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੪॥
kalimal mail naahee te niramal oe raheh bhagat liv laaee he |4|

They are not stained with the filth of sins; they are immaculate and pure, and remain absorbed in loving devotional worship. ||4||

ਬੂਝਹੁ ਹਰਿ ਜਨ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਬਾਣੀ ॥
boojhahu har jan satigur baanee |

O humble servants of the Lord, understand the Word of the Guru's Bani.

ਏਹੁ ਜੋਬਨੁ ਸਾਸੁ ਹੈ ਦੇਹ ਪੁਰਾਣੀ ॥
ehu joban saas hai deh puraanee |

This youth, breath and body shall pass away.

ਆਜੁ ਕਾਲਿ ਮਰਿ ਜਾਈਐ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਹਰਿ ਜਪੁ ਜਪਿ ਰਿਦੈ ਧਿਆਈ ਹੇ ॥੫॥
aaj kaal mar jaaeeai praanee har jap jap ridai dhiaaee he |5|

O mortal, you shall die today or tomorrow; chant, and meditate on the Lord within your heart. ||5||

ਛੋਡਹੁ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਕੂੜ ਕਬਾੜਾ ॥
chhoddahu praanee koorr kabaarraa |

O mortal, abandon falsehood and your worthless ways.

ਕੂੜੁ ਮਾਰੇ ਕਾਲੁ ਉਛਾਹਾੜਾ ॥
koorr maare kaal uchhaahaarraa |

Death viciously kills the false beings.

ਸਾਕਤ ਕੂੜਿ ਪਚਹਿ ਮਨਿ ਹਉਮੈ ਦੁਹੁ ਮਾਰਗਿ ਪਚੈ ਪਚਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੬॥
saakat koorr pacheh man haumai duhu maarag pachai pachaaee he |6|

The faithless cynic is ruined through falsehood and his egotistical mind.On the path of duality, he rots away and decomposes. ||6||
