ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਮਤਿ ਜੀਇ ਆਈ ਕਾਰਿ ॥੧॥
gur kee mat jee aaee kaar |1|

The Guru's Teachings are useful to my soul. ||1||

ਇਨ ਬਿਧਿ ਰਾਮ ਰਮਤ ਮਨੁ ਮਾਨਿਆ ॥
ein bidh raam ramat man maaniaa |

Chanting the Lord's Name in this way, my mind is satisfied.

ਗਿਆਨ ਅੰਜਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦਿ ਪਛਾਨਿਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
giaan anjan gur sabad pachhaaniaa |1| rahaau |

I have obtained the ointment of spiritual wisdom, recognizing the Word of the Guru's Shabad. ||1||Pause||

ਇਕੁ ਸੁਖੁ ਮਾਨਿਆ ਸਹਜਿ ਮਿਲਾਇਆ ॥
eik sukh maaniaa sahaj milaaeaa |

Blended with the One Lord, I enjoy intuitive peace.

ਨਿਰਮਲ ਬਾਣੀ ਭਰਮੁ ਚੁਕਾਇਆ ॥
niramal baanee bharam chukaaeaa |

Through the Immaculate Bani of the Word, my doubts have been dispelled.

ਲਾਲ ਭਏ ਸੂਹਾ ਰੰਗੁ ਮਾਇਆ ॥
laal bhe soohaa rang maaeaa |

Instead of the pale color of Maya, I am imbued with the deep crimson color of the Lord's Love.

ਨਦਰਿ ਭਈ ਬਿਖੁ ਠਾਕਿ ਰਹਾਇਆ ॥੨॥
nadar bhee bikh tthaak rahaaeaa |2|

By the Lord's Glance of Grace, the poison has been eliminated. ||2||

ਉਲਟ ਭਈ ਜੀਵਤ ਮਰਿ ਜਾਗਿਆ ॥
aulatt bhee jeevat mar jaagiaa |

When I turned away, and became dead while yet alive, I was awakened.

ਸਬਦਿ ਰਵੇ ਮਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਸਿਉ ਲਾਗਿਆ ॥
sabad rave man har siau laagiaa |

Chanting the Word of the Shabad, my mind is attached to the Lord.

ਰਸੁ ਸੰਗ੍ਰਹਿ ਬਿਖੁ ਪਰਹਰਿ ਤਿਆਗਿਆ ॥
ras sangreh bikh parahar tiaagiaa |

I have gathered in the Lord's sublime essence, and cast out the poison.

ਭਾਇ ਬਸੇ ਜਮ ਕਾ ਭਉ ਭਾਗਿਆ ॥੩॥
bhaae base jam kaa bhau bhaagiaa |3|

Abiding in His Love, the fear of death has run away. ||3||

ਸਾਦ ਰਹੇ ਬਾਦੰ ਅਹੰਕਾਰਾ ॥
saad rahe baadan ahankaaraa |

My taste for pleasure ended, along with conflict and egotism.

ਚਿਤੁ ਹਰਿ ਸਿਉ ਰਾਤਾ ਹੁਕਮਿ ਅਪਾਰਾ ॥
chit har siau raataa hukam apaaraa |

My consciousness is attuned to the Lord, by the Order of the Infinite.

ਜਾਤਿ ਰਹੇ ਪਤਿ ਕੇ ਆਚਾਰਾ ॥
jaat rahe pat ke aachaaraa |

My pursuit for worldy pride and honour is over.

ਦ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਭਈ ਸੁਖੁ ਆਤਮ ਧਾਰਾ ॥੪॥
drisatt bhee sukh aatam dhaaraa |4|

When He blessed me with His Glance of Grace, peace was established in my soul. ||4||

ਤੁਝ ਬਿਨੁ ਕੋਇ ਨ ਦੇਖਉ ਮੀਤੁ ॥
tujh bin koe na dekhau meet |

Without You, I see no friend at all.

ਕਿਸੁ ਸੇਵਉ ਕਿਸੁ ਦੇਵਉ ਚੀਤੁ ॥
kis sevau kis devau cheet |

Whom should I serve? Unto whom should I dedicate my consciousness?

ਕਿਸੁ ਪੂਛਉ ਕਿਸੁ ਲਾਗਉ ਪਾਇ ॥
kis poochhau kis laagau paae |

Whom should I ask? At whose feet should I fall?

ਕਿਸੁ ਉਪਦੇਸਿ ਰਹਾ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਇ ॥੫॥
kis upades rahaa liv laae |5|

By whose teachings will I remain absorbed in His Love? ||5||

ਗੁਰ ਸੇਵੀ ਗੁਰ ਲਾਗਉ ਪਾਇ ॥
gur sevee gur laagau paae |

I serve the Guru, and I fall at the Guru's Feet.

ਭਗਤਿ ਕਰੀ ਰਾਚਉ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਇ ॥
bhagat karee raachau har naae |

I worship Him, and I am absorbed in the Lord's Name.

ਸਿਖਿਆ ਦੀਖਿਆ ਭੋਜਨ ਭਾਉ ॥
sikhiaa deekhiaa bhojan bhaau |

The Lord's Love is my instruction, sermon and food.

ਹੁਕਮਿ ਸੰਜੋਗੀ ਨਿਜ ਘਰਿ ਜਾਉ ॥੬॥
hukam sanjogee nij ghar jaau |6|

Enjoined to the Lord's Command, I have entered the home of my inner self. ||6||

ਗਰਬ ਗਤੰ ਸੁਖ ਆਤਮ ਧਿਆਨਾ ॥
garab gatan sukh aatam dhiaanaa |

With the extinction of pride, my soul has found peace and meditation.

ਜੋਤਿ ਭਈ ਜੋਤੀ ਮਾਹਿ ਸਮਾਨਾ ॥
jot bhee jotee maeh samaanaa |

The Divine Light has dawned, and I am absorbed in the Light.

ਲਿਖਤੁ ਮਿਟੈ ਨਹੀ ਸਬਦੁ ਨੀਸਾਨਾ ॥
likhat mittai nahee sabad neesaanaa |

Pre-ordained destiny cannot be erased; the Shabad is my banner and insignia.

ਕਰਤਾ ਕਰਣਾ ਕਰਤਾ ਜਾਨਾ ॥੭॥
karataa karanaa karataa jaanaa |7|

I know the Creator, the Creator of His Creation. ||7||

ਨਹ ਪੰਡਿਤੁ ਨਹ ਚਤੁਰੁ ਸਿਆਨਾ ॥
nah panddit nah chatur siaanaa |

I am not a learned Pandit, I am not clever or wise.

ਨਹ ਭੂਲੋ ਨਹ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲਾਨਾ ॥
nah bhoolo nah bharam bhulaanaa |

I do not wander; I am not deluded by doubt.

ਕਥਉ ਨ ਕਥਨੀ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਪਛਾਨਾ ॥
kthau na kathanee hukam pachhaanaa |

I do not speak empty speech; I have recognized the Hukam of His Command.

ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਸਹਜਿ ਸਮਾਨਾ ॥੮॥੧॥
naanak guramat sahaj samaanaa |8|1|

Nanak is absorbed in intuitive peace through the Guru's Teachings. ||8||1||

ਗਉੜੀ ਗੁਆਰੇਰੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥
gaurree guaareree mahalaa 1 |

Gauree Gwaarayree, First Mehl:

ਮਨੁ ਕੁੰਚਰੁ ਕਾਇਆ ਉਦਿਆਨੈ ॥
man kunchar kaaeaa udiaanai |

The mind is an elephant in the forest of the body.

ਗੁਰੁ ਅੰਕਸੁ ਸਚੁ ਸਬਦੁ ਨੀਸਾਨੈ ॥
gur ankas sach sabad neesaanai |

The Guru is the controlling stick; when the Insignia of the True Shabad is applied,

ਰਾਜ ਦੁਆਰੈ ਸੋਭ ਸੁ ਮਾਨੈ ॥੧॥
raaj duaarai sobh su maanai |1|

One obtains honor in the Court of God the King. ||1||

ਚਤੁਰਾਈ ਨਹ ਚੀਨਿਆ ਜਾਇ ॥
chaturaaee nah cheeniaa jaae |

He cannot be known through clever tricks.

ਬਿਨੁ ਮਾਰੇ ਕਿਉ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਪਾਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
bin maare kiau keemat paae |1| rahaau |

Without subduing the mind, how can His value be estimated? ||1||Pause||

ਘਰ ਮਹਿ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਤਸਕਰੁ ਲੇਈ ॥
ghar meh amrit tasakar leee |

In the house of the self is the Ambrosial Nectar, which is being stolen by the thieves.

ਨੰਨਾਕਾਰੁ ਨ ਕੋਇ ਕਰੇਈ ॥
nanaakaar na koe kareee |

No one can say no to them.

ਰਾਖੈ ਆਪਿ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਦੇਈ ॥੨॥
raakhai aap vaddiaaee deee |2|

He Himself protects us, and blesses us with greatness. ||2||

ਨੀਲ ਅਨੀਲ ਅਗਨਿ ਇਕ ਠਾਈ ॥
neel aneel agan ik tthaaee |

There are billions, countless billions of fires of desire at the seat of the mind.

ਜਲਿ ਨਿਵਰੀ ਗੁਰਿ ਬੂਝ ਬੁਝਾਈ ॥
jal nivaree gur boojh bujhaaee |

They are extinguished only with the water of understanding, imparted by the Guru.

ਮਨੁ ਦੇ ਲੀਆ ਰਹਸਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਈ ॥੩॥
man de leea rahas gun gaaee |3|

Offering my mind, I have attained it, and I joyfully sing His Glorious Praises. ||3||

ਜੈਸਾ ਘਰਿ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਸੋ ਤੈਸਾ ॥
jaisaa ghar baahar so taisaa |

Just as He is within the home of the self, so is He beyond.

ਬੈਸਿ ਗੁਫਾ ਮਹਿ ਆਖਉ ਕੈਸਾ ॥
bais gufaa meh aakhau kaisaa |

But how can I describe Him, sitting in a cave?

ਸਾਗਰਿ ਡੂਗਰਿ ਨਿਰਭਉ ਐਸਾ ॥੪॥
saagar ddoogar nirbhau aaisaa |4|

The Fearless Lord is in the oceans, just as He is in the mountains. ||4||

ਮੂਏ ਕਉ ਕਹੁ ਮਾਰੇ ਕਉਨੁ ॥
mooe kau kahu maare kaun |

Tell me, who can kill someone who is already dead?

ਨਿਡਰੇ ਕਉ ਕੈਸਾ ਡਰੁ ਕਵਨੁ ॥
niddare kau kaisaa ddar kavan |

What does he fear? Who can frighten the fearless one?

ਸਬਦਿ ਪਛਾਨੈ ਤੀਨੇ ਭਉਨ ॥੫॥
sabad pachhaanai teene bhaun |5|

He recognizes the Word of the Shabad, throughout the three worlds. ||5||

ਜਿਨਿ ਕਹਿਆ ਤਿਨਿ ਕਹਨੁ ਵਖਾਨਿਆ ॥
jin kahiaa tin kahan vakhaaniaa |

One who speaks, merely describes speech.

ਜਿਨਿ ਬੂਝਿਆ ਤਿਨਿ ਸਹਜਿ ਪਛਾਨਿਆ ॥
jin boojhiaa tin sahaj pachhaaniaa |

But one who understands, intuitively realizes.

ਦੇਖਿ ਬੀਚਾਰਿ ਮੇਰਾ ਮਨੁ ਮਾਨਿਆ ॥੬॥
dekh beechaar meraa man maaniaa |6|

Seeing and reflecting upon it, my mind surrenders. ||6||

ਕੀਰਤਿ ਸੂਰਤਿ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਇਕ ਨਾਈ ॥
keerat soorat mukat ik naaee |

Praise, beauty and liberation are in the One Name.

ਤਹੀ ਨਿਰੰਜਨੁ ਰਹਿਆ ਸਮਾਈ ॥
tahee niranjan rahiaa samaaee |

In it, the Immaculate Lord is permeating and pervading.

ਨਿਜ ਘਰਿ ਬਿਆਪਿ ਰਹਿਆ ਨਿਜ ਠਾਈ ॥੭॥
nij ghar biaap rahiaa nij tthaaee |7|

He dwells in the home of the self, and in His own sublime place. ||7||

ਉਸਤਤਿ ਕਰਹਿ ਕੇਤੇ ਮੁਨਿ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ॥
ausatat kareh kete mun preet |

The many silent sages lovingly praise Him.
