ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਾਚੈ ਹਰਿ ਸਰਿ ਵਾਸਾ ਪਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੫॥
ahinis preet sabad saachai har sar vaasaa paavaniaa |5|

Day and night, they are in love with the True Word of the Shabad. They obtain their home in the Ocean of the Lord. ||5||

ਮਨਮੁਖੁ ਸਦਾ ਬਗੁ ਮੈਲਾ ਹਉਮੈ ਮਲੁ ਲਾਈ ॥
manamukh sadaa bag mailaa haumai mal laaee |

The self-willed manmukhs shall always be filthy cranes, smeared with the filth of ego.

ਇਸਨਾਨੁ ਕਰੈ ਪਰੁ ਮੈਲੁ ਨ ਜਾਈ ॥
eisanaan karai par mail na jaaee |

They may bathe, but their filth is not removed.

ਜੀਵਤੁ ਮਰੈ ਗੁਰਸਬਦੁ ਬੀਚਾਰੈ ਹਉਮੈ ਮੈਲੁ ਚੁਕਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੬॥
jeevat marai gurasabad beechaarai haumai mail chukaavaniaa |6|

One who dies while yet alive, and contemplates the Word of the Guru's Shabad, is rid of this filth of ego. ||6||

ਰਤਨੁ ਪਦਾਰਥੁ ਘਰ ਤੇ ਪਾਇਆ ॥
ratan padaarath ghar te paaeaa |

The Priceless Jewel is found, in the home of one's own being,

ਪੂਰੈ ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਸਬਦੁ ਸੁਣਾਇਆ ॥
poorai satigur sabad sunaaeaa |

when one listens to the Shabad, the Word of the Perfect True Guru.

ਗੁਰਪਰਸਾਦਿ ਮਿਟਿਆ ਅੰਧਿਆਰਾ ਘਟਿ ਚਾਨਣੁ ਆਪੁ ਪਛਾਨਣਿਆ ॥੭॥
guraparasaad mittiaa andhiaaraa ghatt chaanan aap pachhaananiaa |7|

By Guru's Grace, the darkness of spiritual ignorance is dispelled; I have come to recognize the Divine Light within my own heart. ||7||

ਆਪਿ ਉਪਾਏ ਤੈ ਆਪੇ ਵੇਖੈ ॥
aap upaae tai aape vekhai |

The Lord Himself creates, and He Himself beholds.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵੈ ਸੋ ਜਨੁ ਲੇਖੈ ॥
satigur sevai so jan lekhai |

Serving the True Guru, one becomes acceptable.

ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਸੈ ਘਟ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਗੁਰ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਤੇ ਪਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੮॥੩੧॥੩੨॥
naanak naam vasai ghatt antar gur kirapaa te paavaniaa |8|31|32|

O Nanak, the Naam dwells deep within the heart; by Guru's Grace, it is obtained. ||8||31||32||

ਮਾਝ ਮਹਲਾ ੩ ॥
maajh mahalaa 3 |

Maajh, Third Mehl:

ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹੁ ਜਗਤੁ ਸਬਾਇਆ ॥
maaeaa mohu jagat sabaaeaa |

The whole world is engrossed in emotional attachment to Maya.

ਤ੍ਰੈ ਗੁਣ ਦੀਸਹਿ ਮੋਹੇ ਮਾਇਆ ॥
trai gun deeseh mohe maaeaa |

Those who are controlled by the three qualities are attached to Maya.

ਗੁਰਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਕੋ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਬੂਝੈ ਚਉਥੈ ਪਦਿ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੧॥
guraparasaadee ko viralaa boojhai chauthai pad liv laavaniaa |1|

By Guru's Grace, a few come to understand; they center their consciousness in the fourth state. ||1||

ਹਉ ਵਾਰੀ ਜੀਉ ਵਾਰੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹੁ ਸਬਦਿ ਜਲਾਵਣਿਆ ॥
hau vaaree jeeo vaaree maaeaa mohu sabad jalaavaniaa |

I am a sacrifice, my soul is a sacrifice, to those who burn away their emotional attachment to Maya, through the Shabad.

ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹੁ ਜਲਾਏ ਸੋ ਹਰਿ ਸਿਉ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਏ ਹਰਿ ਦਰਿ ਮਹਲੀ ਸੋਭਾ ਪਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
maaeaa mohu jalaae so har siau chit laae har dar mahalee sobhaa paavaniaa |1| rahaau |

Those who burn away this attachment to Maya, and focus their consciousness on the Lord are honored in the True Court, and the Mansion of the Lord's Presence. ||1||Pause||

ਦੇਵੀ ਦੇਵਾ ਮੂਲੁ ਹੈ ਮਾਇਆ ॥
devee devaa mool hai maaeaa |

The source, the root, of the gods and goddesses is Maya.

ਸਿੰਮ੍ਰਿਤਿ ਸਾਸਤ ਜਿੰਨਿ ਉਪਾਇਆ ॥
sinmrit saasat jin upaaeaa |

For them, the Simritees and the Shaastras were composed.

ਕਾਮੁ ਕ੍ਰੋਧੁ ਪਸਰਿਆ ਸੰਸਾਰੇ ਆਇ ਜਾਇ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੨॥
kaam krodh pasariaa sansaare aae jaae dukh paavaniaa |2|

Sexual desire and anger are diffused throughout the universe. Coming and going, people suffer in pain. ||2||

ਤਿਸੁ ਵਿਚਿ ਗਿਆਨ ਰਤਨੁ ਇਕੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥
tis vich giaan ratan ik paaeaa |

The jewel of spiritual wisdom was placed within the universe.

ਗੁਰਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਮੰਨਿ ਵਸਾਇਆ ॥
guraparasaadee man vasaaeaa |

By Guru's Grace, it is enshrined within the mind.

ਜਤੁ ਸਤੁ ਸੰਜਮੁ ਸਚੁ ਕਮਾਵੈ ਗੁਰਿ ਪੂਰੈ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਵਣਿਆ ॥੩॥
jat sat sanjam sach kamaavai gur poorai naam dhiaavaniaa |3|

Celibacy, chastity, self-discipline and the practice of truthfulness are obtained from the Perfect Guru, by meditating on the Naam, the Name of the Lord. ||3||

ਪੇਈਅੜੈ ਧਨ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲਾਣੀ ॥
peeearrai dhan bharam bhulaanee |

In this world of her parents' home, the soul-bride has been deluded by doubt.

ਦੂਜੈ ਲਾਗੀ ਫਿਰਿ ਪਛੋਤਾਣੀ ॥
doojai laagee fir pachhotaanee |

Attached to duality, she later comes to regret it.

ਹਲਤੁ ਪਲਤੁ ਦੋਵੈ ਗਵਾਏ ਸੁਪਨੈ ਸੁਖੁ ਨ ਪਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੪॥
halat palat dovai gavaae supanai sukh na paavaniaa |4|

She forfeits both this world and the next, and even in her dreams, she does not find peace. ||4||

ਪੇਈਅੜੈ ਧਨ ਕੰਤੁ ਸਮਾਲੇ ॥
peeearrai dhan kant samaale |

The soul-bride who remembers her Husband Lord in this world,

ਗੁਰਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਵੇਖੈ ਨਾਲੇ ॥
guraparasaadee vekhai naale |

by Guru's Grace, sees Him close at hand.

ਪਿਰ ਕੈ ਸਹਜਿ ਰਹੈ ਰੰਗਿ ਰਾਤੀ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਿੰਗਾਰੁ ਬਣਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੫॥
pir kai sahaj rahai rang raatee sabad singaar banaavaniaa |5|

She remains intuitively attuned to the Love of her Beloved; she makes the Word of His Shabad her decoration. ||5||

ਸਫਲੁ ਜਨਮੁ ਜਿਨਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥
safal janam jinaa satigur paaeaa |

Blessed and fruitful is the coming of those who find the True Guru;

ਦੂਜਾ ਭਾਉ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦਿ ਜਲਾਇਆ ॥
doojaa bhaau gur sabad jalaaeaa |

through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, they burn their love of duality.

ਏਕੋ ਰਵਿ ਰਹਿਆ ਘਟ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਮਿਲਿ ਸਤਸੰਗਤਿ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੬॥
eko rav rahiaa ghatt antar mil satasangat har gun gaavaniaa |6|

The One Lord is permeating and pervading deep within the heart. Joining the Sat Sangat, the True Congregation, they sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord. ||6||

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਨ ਸੇਵੇ ਸੋ ਕਾਹੇ ਆਇਆ ॥
satigur na seve so kaahe aaeaa |

Those who do not serve the True Guru-why did they even come into this world?

ਧ੍ਰਿਗੁ ਜੀਵਣੁ ਬਿਰਥਾ ਜਨਮੁ ਗਵਾਇਆ ॥
dhrig jeevan birathaa janam gavaaeaa |

Cursed are their lives; they have uselessly wasted this human life.

ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਚਿਤਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਬਹੁ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੭॥
manamukh naam chit na aavai bin naavai bahu dukh paavaniaa |7|

The self-willed manmukhs do not remember the Naam. Without the Naam, they suffer in terrible pain. ||7||

ਜਿਨਿ ਸਿਸਟਿ ਸਾਜੀ ਸੋਈ ਜਾਣੈ ॥
jin sisatt saajee soee jaanai |

The One who created the Universe, He alone knows it.

ਆਪੇ ਮੇਲੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਪਛਾਣੈ ॥
aape melai sabad pachhaanai |

He unites with Himself those who realize the Shabad.

ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਤਿਨ ਜਨ ਕਉ ਜਿਨ ਧੁਰਿ ਮਸਤਕਿ ਲੇਖੁ ਲਿਖਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੮॥੧॥੩੨॥੩੩॥
naanak naam miliaa tin jan kau jin dhur masatak lekh likhaavaniaa |8|1|32|33|

O Nanak, they alone receive the Naam, upon whose foreheads such pre-ordained destiny is recorded. ||8||1||32||33||

ਮਾਝ ਮਹਲਾ ੪ ॥
maajh mahalaa 4 |

Maajh, Fourth Mehl:

ਆਦਿ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਅਪਰੰਪਰੁ ਆਪੇ ॥
aad purakh aparanpar aape |

The Primal Being is Himself remote and beyond.

ਆਪੇ ਥਾਪੇ ਥਾਪਿ ਉਥਾਪੇ ॥
aape thaape thaap uthaape |

He Himself establishes, and having established, He disestablishes.

ਸਭ ਮਹਿ ਵਰਤੈ ਏਕੋ ਸੋਈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸੋਭਾ ਪਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੧॥
sabh meh varatai eko soee guramukh sobhaa paavaniaa |1|

The One Lord is pervading in all; those who become Gurmukh are honored. ||1||

ਹਉ ਵਾਰੀ ਜੀਉ ਵਾਰੀ ਨਿਰੰਕਾਰੀ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਵਣਿਆ ॥
hau vaaree jeeo vaaree nirankaaree naam dhiaavaniaa |

I am a sacrifice, my soul is a sacrifice, to those who meditate on the Naam, the Name of the Formless Lord.
