ਜੋਬਨੁ ਧਨੁ ਪ੍ਰਭਤਾ ਕੈ ਮਦ ਮੈ ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਰਹੈ ਦਿਵਾਨਾ ॥੧॥
joban dhan prabhataa kai mad mai ahinis rahai divaanaa |1|

In the pride of youth, wealth and glory, day and night, he remains intoxicated. ||1||

ਦੀਨ ਦਇਆਲ ਸਦਾ ਦੁਖ ਭੰਜਨ ਤਾ ਸਿਉ ਮਨੁ ਨ ਲਗਾਨਾ ॥
deen deaal sadaa dukh bhanjan taa siau man na lagaanaa |

God is merciful to the meek, and forever the Destroyer of pain, but the mortal does not center his mind on Him.

ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਕੋਟਨ ਮੈ ਕਿਨਹੂ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹੋਇ ਪਛਾਨਾ ॥੨॥੨॥
jan naanak kottan mai kinahoo guramukh hoe pachhaanaa |2|2|

O servant Nanak, among millions, only a rare few, as Gurmukh, realize God. ||2||2||

ਧਨਾਸਰੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੯ ॥
dhanaasaree mahalaa 9 |

Dhanaasaree, Ninth Mehl:

ਤਿਹ ਜੋਗੀ ਕਉ ਜੁਗਤਿ ਨ ਜਾਨਉ ॥
tih jogee kau jugat na jaanau |

That Yogi does not know the way.

ਲੋਭ ਮੋਹ ਮਾਇਆ ਮਮਤਾ ਫੁਨਿ ਜਿਹ ਘਟਿ ਮਾਹਿ ਪਛਾਨਉ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
lobh moh maaeaa mamataa fun jih ghatt maeh pachhaanau |1| rahaau |

Understand that his heart is filled with greed, emotional attachment, Maya and egotism. ||1||Pause||

ਪਰ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਉਸਤਤਿ ਨਹ ਜਾ ਕੈ ਕੰਚਨ ਲੋਹ ਸਮਾਨੋ ॥
par nindaa usatat nah jaa kai kanchan loh samaano |

One who does not slander or praise others, who looks upon gold and iron alike,

ਹਰਖ ਸੋਗ ਤੇ ਰਹੈ ਅਤੀਤਾ ਜੋਗੀ ਤਾਹਿ ਬਖਾਨੋ ॥੧॥
harakh sog te rahai ateetaa jogee taeh bakhaano |1|

who is free from pleasure and pain - he alone is called a true Yogi. ||1||

ਚੰਚਲ ਮਨੁ ਦਹ ਦਿਸਿ ਕਉ ਧਾਵਤ ਅਚਲ ਜਾਹਿ ਠਹਰਾਨੋ ॥
chanchal man dah dis kau dhaavat achal jaeh tthaharaano |

The restless mind wanders in the ten directions - it needs to be pacified and restrained.

ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਇਹ ਬਿਧਿ ਕੋ ਜੋ ਨਰੁ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਤਾਹਿ ਤੁਮ ਮਾਨੋ ॥੨॥੩॥
kahu naanak ih bidh ko jo nar mukat taeh tum maano |2|3|

Says Nanak, whoever knows this technique is judged to be liberated. ||2||3||

ਧਨਾਸਰੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੯ ॥
dhanaasaree mahalaa 9 |

Dhanaasaree, Ninth Mehl:

ਅਬ ਮੈ ਕਉਨੁ ਉਪਾਉ ਕਰਉ ॥
ab mai kaun upaau krau |

Now, what efforts should I make?

ਜਿਹ ਬਿਧਿ ਮਨ ਕੋ ਸੰਸਾ ਚੂਕੈ ਭਉ ਨਿਧਿ ਪਾਰਿ ਪਰਉ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
jih bidh man ko sansaa chookai bhau nidh paar prau |1| rahaau |

How can I dispel the anxieties of my mind? How can I cross over the terrifying world-ocean? ||1||Pause||

ਜਨਮੁ ਪਾਇ ਕਛੁ ਭਲੋ ਨ ਕੀਨੋ ਤਾ ਤੇ ਅਧਿਕ ਡਰਉ ॥
janam paae kachh bhalo na keeno taa te adhik ddrau |

Obtaining this human incarnation, I have done no good deeds; this makes me very afraid!

ਮਨ ਬਚ ਕ੍ਰਮ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਨ ਨਹੀ ਗਾਏ ਯਹ ਜੀਅ ਸੋਚ ਧਰਉ ॥੧॥
man bach kram har gun nahee gaae yah jeea soch dhrau |1|

In thought, word and deed, I have not sung the Lord's Praises; this thought worries my mind. ||1||

ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਸੁਨਿ ਕਛੁ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਨ ਉਪਜਿਓ ਪਸੁ ਜਿਉ ਉਦਰੁ ਭਰਉ ॥
guramat sun kachh giaan na upajio pas jiau udar bhrau |

I listened to the Guru's Teachings, but spiritual wisdom did not well up within me; like a beast, I fill my belly.

ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਬਿਰਦੁ ਪਛਾਨਉ ਤਬ ਹਉ ਪਤਿਤ ਤਰਉ ॥੨॥੪॥੯॥੯॥੧੩॥੫੮॥੪॥੯੩॥
kahu naanak prabh birad pachhaanau tab hau patit trau |2|4|9|9|13|58|4|93|

Says Nanak, O God, please confirm Your Law of Grace; for only then can I, the sinner, be saved. ||2||4||9||9||13||58||4||93||

ਧਨਾਸਰੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ਘਰੁ ੨ ਅਸਟਪਦੀਆ ॥
dhanaasaree mahalaa 1 ghar 2 asattapadeea |

Dhanaasaree, First Mehl, Second House, Ashtpadheeyaa:

ੴ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥
ik oankaar satigur prasaad |

One Universal Creator God. By The Grace Of The True Guru:

ਗੁਰੁ ਸਾਗਰੁ ਰਤਨੀ ਭਰਪੂਰੇ ॥
gur saagar ratanee bharapoore |

The Guru is the ocean, filled with pearls.

ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਸੰਤ ਚੁਗਹਿ ਨਹੀ ਦੂਰੇ ॥
amrit sant chugeh nahee doore |

The Saints gather in the Ambrosial Nectar; they do not go far away from there.

ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਚੋਗ ਚੁਗਹਿ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਭਾਵੈ ॥
har ras chog chugeh prabh bhaavai |

They taste the subtle essence of the Lord; they are loved by God.

ਸਰਵਰ ਮਹਿ ਹੰਸੁ ਪ੍ਰਾਨਪਤਿ ਪਾਵੈ ॥੧॥
saravar meh hans praanapat paavai |1|

Within this pool, the swans find their Lord, the Lord of their souls. ||1||

ਕਿਆ ਬਗੁ ਬਪੁੜਾ ਛਪੜੀ ਨਾਇ ॥
kiaa bag bapurraa chhaparree naae |

What can the poor crane accomplish by bathing in the mud puddle?

ਕੀਚੜਿ ਡੂਬੈ ਮੈਲੁ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
keecharr ddoobai mail na jaae |1| rahaau |

It sinks into the mire, and its filth is not washed away. ||1||Pause||

ਰਖਿ ਰਖਿ ਚਰਨ ਧਰੇ ਵੀਚਾਰੀ ॥
rakh rakh charan dhare veechaaree |

After careful deliberation, the thoughtful person takes a step.

ਦੁਬਿਧਾ ਛੋਡਿ ਭਏ ਨਿਰੰਕਾਰੀ ॥
dubidhaa chhodd bhe nirankaaree |

Forsaking duality, he becomes a devotee of the Formless Lord.

ਮੁਕਤਿ ਪਦਾਰਥੁ ਹਰਿ ਰਸ ਚਾਖੇ ॥
mukat padaarath har ras chaakhe |

He obtains the treasure of liberation, and enjoys the sublime essence of the Lord.

ਆਵਣ ਜਾਣ ਰਹੇ ਗੁਰਿ ਰਾਖੇ ॥੨॥
aavan jaan rahe gur raakhe |2|

His comings and goings end, and the Guru protects him. ||2||

ਸਰਵਰ ਹੰਸਾ ਛੋਡਿ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥
saravar hansaa chhodd na jaae |

The swan do not leave this pool.

ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਭਗਤਿ ਕਰਿ ਸਹਜਿ ਸਮਾਇ ॥
prem bhagat kar sahaj samaae |

In loving devotional worship, they merge in the Celestial Lord.

ਸਰਵਰ ਮਹਿ ਹੰਸੁ ਹੰਸ ਮਹਿ ਸਾਗਰੁ ॥
saravar meh hans hans meh saagar |

The swans are in the pool, and the pool is in the swans.

ਅਕਥ ਕਥਾ ਗੁਰ ਬਚਨੀ ਆਦਰੁ ॥੩॥
akath kathaa gur bachanee aadar |3|

They speak the Unspoken Speech, and they honor and revere the Guru's Word. ||3||

ਸੁੰਨ ਮੰਡਲ ਇਕੁ ਜੋਗੀ ਬੈਸੇ ॥
sun manddal ik jogee baise |

The Yogi, the Primal Lord, sits within the celestial sphere of deepest Samaadhi.

ਨਾਰਿ ਨ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਕਹਹੁ ਕੋਊ ਕੈਸੇ ॥
naar na purakh kahahu koaoo kaise |

He is not male, and He is not female; how can anyone describe Him?

ਤ੍ਰਿਭਵਣ ਜੋਤਿ ਰਹੇ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਈ ॥
tribhavan jot rahe liv laaee |

The three worlds continue to center their attention on His Light.

ਸੁਰਿ ਨਰ ਨਾਥ ਸਚੇ ਸਰਣਾਈ ॥੪॥
sur nar naath sache saranaaee |4|

The silent sages and the Yogic masters seek the Sanctuary of the True Lord. ||4||

ਆਨੰਦ ਮੂਲੁ ਅਨਾਥ ਅਧਾਰੀ ॥
aanand mool anaath adhaaree |

The Lord is the source of bliss, the support of the helpless.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਭਗਤਿ ਸਹਜਿ ਬੀਚਾਰੀ ॥
guramukh bhagat sahaj beechaaree |

The Gurmukhs worship and contemplate the Celestial Lord.

ਭਗਤਿ ਵਛਲ ਭੈ ਕਾਟਣਹਾਰੇ ॥
bhagat vachhal bhai kaattanahaare |

God is the Lover of His devotees, the Destroyer of fear.

ਹਉਮੈ ਮਾਰਿ ਮਿਲੇ ਪਗੁ ਧਾਰੇ ॥੫॥
haumai maar mile pag dhaare |5|

Subduing ego, one meets the Lord, and places his feet on the Path. ||5||

ਅਨਿਕ ਜਤਨ ਕਰਿ ਕਾਲੁ ਸੰਤਾਏ ॥
anik jatan kar kaal santaae |

He makes many efforts, but still, the Messenger of Death tortures him.

ਮਰਣੁ ਲਿਖਾਇ ਮੰਡਲ ਮਹਿ ਆਏ ॥
maran likhaae manddal meh aae |

Destined only to die, he comes into the world.
