ਬੇਦੁ ਵਪਾਰੀ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਰਾਸਿ ਕਰਮੀ ਪਲੈ ਹੋਇ ॥
bed vapaaree giaan raas karamee palai hoe |

The Vedas are only merchants; spiritual wisdom is the capital; by His Grace, it is received.

ਨਾਨਕ ਰਾਸੀ ਬਾਹਰਾ ਲਦਿ ਨ ਚਲਿਆ ਕੋਇ ॥੨॥
naanak raasee baaharaa lad na chaliaa koe |2|

O Nanak, without capital, no one has ever departed with profit. ||2||

Pauree:

ਨਿੰਮੁ ਬਿਰਖੁ ਬਹੁ ਸੰਚੀਐ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਰਸੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥
ninm birakh bahu sancheeai amrit ras paaeaa |

You can water a bitter neem tree with ambrosial nectar.

ਬਿਸੀਅਰੁ ਮੰਤ੍ਰਿ ਵਿਸਾਹੀਐ ਬਹੁ ਦੂਧੁ ਪੀਆਇਆ ॥
biseear mantr visaaheeai bahu doodh peeaeaa |

You can feed a venomous snake lots of milk.

ਮਨਮੁਖੁ ਅਭਿੰਨੁ ਨ ਭਿਜਈ ਪਥਰੁ ਨਾਵਾਇਆ ॥
manamukh abhin na bhijee pathar naavaaeaa |

The self-willed manmukh is resistant; he cannot be softened. You might as well water a stone.

ਬਿਖੁ ਮਹਿ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਸਿੰਚੀਐ ਬਿਖੁ ਕਾ ਫਲੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥
bikh meh amrit sincheeai bikh kaa fal paaeaa |

Irrigating a poisonous plant with ambrosial nectar, only poisonous fruit is obtained.

ਨਾਨਕ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਮੇਲਿ ਹਰਿ ਸਭ ਬਿਖੁ ਲਹਿ ਜਾਇਆ ॥੧੬॥
naanak sangat mel har sabh bikh leh jaaeaa |16|

O Lord, please unite Nanak with the Sangat, the Holy Congregation, so that he may be rid of all poison. ||16||

ਸਲੋਕ ਮਃ ੧ ॥

Salok, First Mehl:

ਮਰਣਿ ਨ ਮੂਰਤੁ ਪੁਛਿਆ ਪੁਛੀ ਥਿਤਿ ਨ ਵਾਰੁ ॥
maran na moorat puchhiaa puchhee thit na vaar |

Death does not ask the time; it does not ask the date or the day of the week.

ਇਕਨੑੀ ਲਦਿਆ ਇਕਿ ਲਦਿ ਚਲੇ ਇਕਨੑੀ ਬਧੇ ਭਾਰ ॥
eikanaee ladiaa ik lad chale ikanaee badhe bhaar |

Some have packed up, and some who have packed up have gone.

ਇਕਨੑਾ ਹੋਈ ਸਾਖਤੀ ਇਕਨੑਾ ਹੋਈ ਸਾਰ ॥
eikanaa hoee saakhatee ikanaa hoee saar |

Some are severely punished, and some are taken care of.

ਲਸਕਰ ਸਣੈ ਦਮਾਮਿਆ ਛੁਟੇ ਬੰਕ ਦੁਆਰ ॥
lasakar sanai damaamiaa chhutte bank duaar |

They must leave their armies and drums, and their beautiful mansions.

ਨਾਨਕ ਢੇਰੀ ਛਾਰੁ ਕੀ ਭੀ ਫਿਰਿ ਹੋਈ ਛਾਰ ॥੧॥
naanak dteree chhaar kee bhee fir hoee chhaar |1|

O Nanak, the pile of dust is once again reduced to dust. ||1||

ਮਃ ੧ ॥

First Mehl:

ਨਾਨਕ ਢੇਰੀ ਢਹਿ ਪਈ ਮਿਟੀ ਸੰਦਾ ਕੋਟੁ ॥
naanak dteree dteh pee mittee sandaa kott |

O Nanak, the pile shall fall apart; the fortress of the body is made of dust.

ਭੀਤਰਿ ਚੋਰੁ ਬਹਾਲਿਆ ਖੋਟੁ ਵੇ ਜੀਆ ਖੋਟੁ ॥੨॥
bheetar chor bahaaliaa khott ve jeea khott |2|

The thief has settled within you; O soul, your life is false. ||2||

ਪਉੜੀ ॥

Pauree:

ਜਿਨ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਦੁਸਟੁ ਹੈ ਨਕ ਵਢੇ ਨਕ ਵਢਾਇਆ ॥
jin andar nindaa dusatt hai nak vadte nak vadtaaeaa |

Those who are filled with vicious slander, shall have their noses cut, and be shamed.

ਮਹਾ ਕਰੂਪ ਦੁਖੀਏ ਸਦਾ ਕਾਲੇ ਮੁਹ ਮਾਇਆ ॥
mahaa karoop dukhee sadaa kaale muh maaeaa |

They are totally ugly, and always in pain. Their faces are blackened by Maya.

ਭਲਕੇ ਉਠਿ ਨਿਤ ਪਰ ਦਰਬੁ ਹਿਰਹਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਚੁਰਾਇਆ ॥
bhalake utth nit par darab hireh har naam churaaeaa |

They rise early in the morning, to cheat and steal from others; they hide from the Lord's Name.

ਹਰਿ ਜੀਉ ਤਿਨ ਕੀ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਮਤ ਕਰਹੁ ਰਖਿ ਲੇਹੁ ਹਰਿ ਰਾਇਆ ॥
har jeeo tin kee sangat mat karahu rakh lehu har raaeaa |

O Dear Lord, let me not even associate with them; save me from them, O my Sovereign Lord King.

ਨਾਨਕ ਪਇਐ ਕਿਰਤਿ ਕਮਾਵਦੇ ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੧੭॥
naanak peaai kirat kamaavade manamukh dukh paaeaa |17|

O Nanak, the self-willed manmukhs act according to their past deeds, producing nothing but pain. ||17||

ਸਲੋਕ ਮਃ ੪ ॥
salok mahalaa 4 |

Salok, Fourth Mehl:

ਸਭੁ ਕੋਈ ਹੈ ਖਸਮ ਕਾ ਖਸਮਹੁ ਸਭੁ ਕੋ ਹੋਇ ॥
sabh koee hai khasam kaa khasamahu sabh ko hoe |

Everyone belongs to our Lord and Master. Everyone came from Him.

ਹੁਕਮੁ ਪਛਾਣੈ ਖਸਮ ਕਾ ਤਾ ਸਚੁ ਪਾਵੈ ਕੋਇ ॥
hukam pachhaanai khasam kaa taa sach paavai koe |

Only by realizing the Hukam of His Command, is Truth obtained.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਆਪੁ ਪਛਾਣੀਐ ਬੁਰਾ ਨ ਦੀਸੈ ਕੋਇ ॥
guramukh aap pachhaaneeai buraa na deesai koe |

The Gurmukh realizes his own self; no one appears evil to him.

ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਈਐ ਸਹਿਲਾ ਆਇਆ ਸੋਇ ॥੧॥
naanak guramukh naam dhiaaeeai sahilaa aaeaa soe |1|

O Nanak, the Gurmukh meditates on the Naam, the Name of the Lord. Fruitful is his coming into the world. ||1||

ਮਃ ੪ ॥

Fourth Mehl:

ਸਭਨਾ ਦਾਤਾ ਆਪਿ ਹੈ ਆਪੇ ਮੇਲਣਹਾਰੁ ॥
sabhanaa daataa aap hai aape melanahaar |

He Himself is the Giver of all; He unites all with Himself.

ਨਾਨਕ ਸਬਦਿ ਮਿਲੇ ਨ ਵਿਛੁੜਹਿ ਜਿਨਾ ਸੇਵਿਆ ਹਰਿ ਦਾਤਾਰੁ ॥੨॥
naanak sabad mile na vichhurreh jinaa seviaa har daataar |2|

O Nanak, they are united with the Word of the Shabad; serving the Lord, the Great Giver, they shall never be separated from Him again. ||2||

ਪਉੜੀ ॥

Pauree:

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਸਾਂਤਿ ਹੈ ਨਾਉ ਉਗਵਿ ਆਇਆ ॥
guramukh hiradai saant hai naau ugav aaeaa |

Peace and tranquility fill the heart of the Gurmukh; the Name wells up within them.

ਜਪ ਤਪ ਤੀਰਥ ਸੰਜਮ ਕਰੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਭਾਇਆ ॥
jap tap teerath sanjam kare mere prabh bhaaeaa |

Chanting and meditation, penance and self-discipline, and bathing at sacred shrines of pilgrimage - the merits of these come by pleasing my God.

ਹਿਰਦਾ ਸੁਧੁ ਹਰਿ ਸੇਵਦੇ ਸੋਹਹਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਇਆ ॥
hiradaa sudh har sevade soheh gun gaaeaa |

So serve the Lord with a pure heart; singing His Glorious Praises, you shall be embellished and exalted.

ਮੇਰੇ ਹਰਿ ਜੀਉ ਏਵੈ ਭਾਵਦਾ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਤਰਾਇਆ ॥
mere har jeeo evai bhaavadaa guramukh taraaeaa |

My Dear Lord is pleased by this; he carries the Gurmukh across.

ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਮੇਲਿਅਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਦਰਿ ਸੋਹਾਇਆ ॥੧੮॥
naanak guramukh melian har dar sohaaeaa |18|

O Nanak, the Gurmukh is merged with the Lord; he is embellished in His Court. ||18||

ਸਲੋਕ ਮਃ ੧ ॥
salok mahalaa 1 |

Salok, First Mehl:

ਧਨਵੰਤਾ ਇਵ ਹੀ ਕਹੈ ਅਵਰੀ ਧਨ ਕਉ ਜਾਉ ॥
dhanavantaa iv hee kahai avaree dhan kau jaau |

Thus speaks the wealthy man: I should go and get more wealth.

ਨਾਨਕੁ ਨਿਰਧਨੁ ਤਿਤੁ ਦਿਨਿ ਜਿਤੁ ਦਿਨਿ ਵਿਸਰੈ ਨਾਉ ॥੧॥
naanak niradhan tith din jit din visarai naau |1|

Nanak becomes poor on that day when he forgets the Lord's Name. ||1||

ਮਃ ੧ ॥

ਸੂਰਜੁ ਚੜੈ ਵਿਜੋਗਿ ਸਭਸੈ ਘਟੈ ਆਰਜਾ ॥
sooraj charrai vijog sabhasai ghattai aarajaa |

The sun rises and sets, and the lives of all run out.

ਤਨੁ ਮਨੁ ਰਤਾ ਭੋਗਿ ਕੋਈ ਹਾਰੈ ਕੋ ਜਿਣੈ ॥
tan man rataa bhog koee haarai ko jinai |

The mind and body experience pleasures; one loses, and another wins.

ਸਭੁ ਕੋ ਭਰਿਆ ਫੂਕਿ ਆਖਣਿ ਕਹਣਿ ਨ ਥੰਮੑੀਐ ॥
sabh ko bhariaa fook aakhan kahan na thamaeeai |

Everyone is puffed up with pride; even after they are spoken to, they do not stop.

ਨਾਨਕ ਵੇਖੈ ਆਪਿ ਫੂਕ ਕਢਾਏ ਢਹਿ ਪਵੈ ॥੨॥
naanak vekhai aap fook kadtaae dteh pavai |2|

O Nanak, the Lord Himself sees all; when He takes the air out of the balloon, the body falls. ||2||

Pauree:

ਸਤਸੰਗਤਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਧਾਨੁ ਹੈ ਜਿਥਹੁ ਹਰਿ ਪਾਇਆ ॥
satasangat naam nidhaan hai jithahu har paaeaa |

The treasure of the Name is in the Sat Sangat, the True Congregation. There, the Lord is found.
