ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਪਾਰਿ ਉਤਾਰੀ ॥
kar kirapaa prabh paar utaaree |

God grants His Grace, and carries him across to the other side.

ਅਗਨਿ ਪਾਣੀ ਸਾਗਰੁ ਅਤਿ ਗਹਰਾ ਗੁਰੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਪਾਰਿ ਉਤਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੨॥
agan paanee saagar at gaharaa gur satigur paar utaaraa he |2|

The ocean is very deep, filled with fiery water; the Guru, the True Guru, carries us across to the other side. ||2||

ਮਨਮੁਖ ਅੰਧੁਲੇ ਸੋਝੀ ਨਾਹੀ ॥
manamukh andhule sojhee naahee |

The blind, self-willed manmukh does not understand.

ਆਵਹਿ ਜਾਹਿ ਮਰਹਿ ਮਰਿ ਜਾਹੀ ॥
aaveh jaeh mareh mar jaahee |

He comes and goes in reincarnation, dying, and dying again.

ਪੂਰਬਿ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਲੇਖੁ ਨ ਮਿਟਈ ਜਮ ਦਰਿ ਅੰਧੁ ਖੁਆਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੩॥
poorab likhiaa lekh na mittee jam dar andh khuaaraa he |3|

The primal inscription of destiny cannot be erased. The spiritually blind suffer terribly at Death's door. ||3||

ਇਕਿ ਆਵਹਿ ਜਾਵਹਿ ਘਰਿ ਵਾਸੁ ਨ ਪਾਵਹਿ ॥
eik aaveh jaaveh ghar vaas na paaveh |

Some come and go, and do not find a home in their own heart.

ਕਿਰਤ ਕੇ ਬਾਧੇ ਪਾਪ ਕਮਾਵਹਿ ॥
kirat ke baadhe paap kamaaveh |

Bound by their past actions, they commit sins.

ਅੰਧੁਲੇ ਸੋਝੀ ਬੂਝ ਨ ਕਾਈ ਲੋਭੁ ਬੁਰਾ ਅਹੰਕਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੪॥
andhule sojhee boojh na kaaee lobh buraa ahankaaraa he |4|

The blind ones have no understanding, no wisdom; they are trapped and ruined by greed and egotism. ||4||

ਪਿਰ ਬਿਨੁ ਕਿਆ ਤਿਸੁ ਧਨ ਸੀਗਾਰਾ ॥
pir bin kiaa tis dhan seegaaraa |

Without her Husband Lord, what good are the soul-bride's decorations?

ਪਰ ਪਿਰ ਰਾਤੀ ਖਸਮੁ ਵਿਸਾਰਾ ॥
par pir raatee khasam visaaraa |

She has forgotten her Lord and Master, and is infatuated with another's husband.

ਜਿਉ ਬੇਸੁਆ ਪੂਤ ਬਾਪੁ ਕੋ ਕਹੀਐ ਤਿਉ ਫੋਕਟ ਕਾਰ ਵਿਕਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੫॥
jiau besuaa poot baap ko kaheeai tiau fokatt kaar vikaaraa he |5|

Just as no one knows who is the father of the prostitute's son, such are the worthless, useless deeds that are done. ||5||

ਪ੍ਰੇਤ ਪਿੰਜਰ ਮਹਿ ਦੂਖ ਘਨੇਰੇ ॥
pret pinjar meh dookh ghanere |

The ghost, in the body-cage, suffers all sorts of afflictions.

ਨਰਕਿ ਪਚਹਿ ਅਗਿਆਨ ਅੰਧੇਰੇ ॥
narak pacheh agiaan andhere |

Those who are blind to spiritual wisdom, putrefy in hell.

ਧਰਮ ਰਾਇ ਕੀ ਬਾਕੀ ਲੀਜੈ ਜਿਨਿ ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਿਸਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੬॥
dharam raae kee baakee leejai jin har kaa naam visaaraa he |6|

The Righteous Judge of Dharma collects the balance due on the account, of those who forget the Name of the Lord. ||6||

ਸੂਰਜੁ ਤਪੈ ਅਗਨਿ ਬਿਖੁ ਝਾਲਾ ॥
sooraj tapai agan bikh jhaalaa |

The scorching sun blazes with flames of poison.

ਅਪਤੁ ਪਸੂ ਮਨਮੁਖੁ ਬੇਤਾਲਾ ॥
apat pasoo manamukh betaalaa |

The self-willed manmukh is dishonored, a beast, a demon.

ਆਸਾ ਮਨਸਾ ਕੂੜੁ ਕਮਾਵਹਿ ਰੋਗੁ ਬੁਰਾ ਬੁਰਿਆਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੭॥
aasaa manasaa koorr kamaaveh rog buraa buriaaraa he |7|

Trapped by hope and desire, he practices falsehood, and is afflicted by the terrible disease of corruption. ||7||

ਮਸਤਕਿ ਭਾਰੁ ਕਲਰ ਸਿਰਿ ਭਾਰਾ ॥
masatak bhaar kalar sir bhaaraa |

He carries the heavy load of sins on his forehead and head.

ਕਿਉ ਕਰਿ ਭਵਜਲੁ ਲੰਘਸਿ ਪਾਰਾ ॥
kiau kar bhavajal langhas paaraa |

How can he cross the terrifying world-ocean?

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਬੋਹਿਥੁ ਆਦਿ ਜੁਗਾਦੀ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮਿ ਨਿਸਤਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੮॥
satigur bohith aad jugaadee raam naam nisataaraa he |8|

From the very beginning of time, and throughout the ages, the True Guru has been the boat; through the Lord's Name, He carries us across. ||8||

ਪੁਤ੍ਰ ਕਲਤ੍ਰ ਜਗਿ ਹੇਤੁ ਪਿਆਰਾ ॥
putr kalatr jag het piaaraa |

The love of one's children and spouse is so sweet in this world.

ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹੁ ਪਸਰਿਆ ਪਾਸਾਰਾ ॥
maaeaa mohu pasariaa paasaaraa |

The expansive expanse of the Universe is attachment to Maya.

ਜਮ ਕੇ ਫਾਹੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਤੋੜੇ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਤਤੁ ਬੀਚਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੯॥
jam ke faahe satigur torre guramukh tat beechaaraa he |9|

The True Guru snaps the noose of Death, for that Gurmukh who contemplates the essence of reality. ||9||

ਕੂੜਿ ਮੁਠੀ ਚਾਲੈ ਬਹੁ ਰਾਹੀ ॥
koorr mutthee chaalai bahu raahee |

Cheated by falsehood, the self-willed manmukh walks along many paths;

ਮਨਮੁਖੁ ਦਾਝੈ ਪੜਿ ਪੜਿ ਭਾਹੀ ॥
manamukh daajhai parr parr bhaahee |

he may be highly educated, but he burns in the fire.

ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਨਾਮੁ ਗੁਰੂ ਵਡ ਦਾਣਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਹੁ ਸੁਖ ਸਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੦॥
amrit naam guroo vadd daanaa naam japahu sukh saaraa he |10|

The Guru is the Great Giver of the Ambrosial Naam, the Name of the Lord. Chanting the Naam, sublime peace is obtained. ||10||

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਤੁਠਾ ਸਚੁ ਦ੍ਰਿੜਾਏ ॥
satigur tutthaa sach drirraae |

The True Guru, in His Mercy, implants Truth within.

ਸਭਿ ਦੁਖ ਮੇਟੇ ਮਾਰਗਿ ਪਾਏ ॥
sabh dukh mette maarag paae |

All suffering is eradicated, and one is placed on the Path.

ਕੰਡਾ ਪਾਇ ਨ ਗਡਈ ਮੂਲੇ ਜਿਸੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਰਾਖਣਹਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੧॥
kanddaa paae na gaddee moole jis satigur raakhanahaaraa he |11|

Not even a thorn ever pierces the foot of one who has the True Guru as his Protector. ||11||

ਖੇਹੂ ਖੇਹ ਰਲੈ ਤਨੁ ਛੀਜੈ ॥
khehoo kheh ralai tan chheejai |

Dust mixes with dust, when the body wastes away.

ਮਨਮੁਖੁ ਪਾਥਰੁ ਸੈਲੁ ਨ ਭੀਜੈ ॥
manamukh paathar sail na bheejai |

The self-willed manmukh is like a stone slab, which is impervious to water.

ਕਰਣ ਪਲਾਵ ਕਰੇ ਬਹੁਤੇਰੇ ਨਰਕਿ ਸੁਰਗਿ ਅਵਤਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੨॥
karan palaav kare bahutere narak surag avataaraa he |12|

He cries out and weeps and wails; he is reincarnated into heaven and then hell. ||12||

ਮਾਇਆ ਬਿਖੁ ਭੁਇਅੰਗਮ ਨਾਲੇ ॥
maaeaa bikh bhueiangam naale |

They live with the poisonous snake of Maya.

ਇਨਿ ਦੁਬਿਧਾ ਘਰ ਬਹੁਤੇ ਗਾਲੇ ॥
ein dubidhaa ghar bahute gaale |

This duality has ruined so many homes.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਬਾਝਹੁ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਨ ਉਪਜੈ ਭਗਤਿ ਰਤੇ ਪਤੀਆਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੩॥
satigur baajhahu preet na upajai bhagat rate pateeaaraa he |13|

Without the True Guru, love does not well up. Imbued with devotional worship, the soul is satisfied. ||13||

ਸਾਕਤ ਮਾਇਆ ਕਉ ਬਹੁ ਧਾਵਹਿ ॥
saakat maaeaa kau bahu dhaaveh |

The faithless cynics chase after Maya.

ਨਾਮੁ ਵਿਸਾਰਿ ਕਹਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਵਹਿ ॥
naam visaar kahaa sukh paaveh |

Forgetting the Naam, how can they find peace?

ਤ੍ਰਿਹੁ ਗੁਣ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਖਪਹਿ ਖਪਾਵਹਿ ਨਾਹੀ ਪਾਰਿ ਉਤਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੪॥
trihu gun antar khapeh khapaaveh naahee paar utaaraa he |14|

In the three qualities, they are destroyed; they cannot cross over to the other side. ||14||

ਕੂਕਰ ਸੂਕਰ ਕਹੀਅਹਿ ਕੂੜਿਆਰਾ ॥
kookar sookar kaheeeh koorriaaraa |

The false are called pigs and dogs.

ਭਉਕਿ ਮਰਹਿ ਭਉ ਭਉ ਭਉਹਾਰਾ ॥
bhauk mareh bhau bhau bhauhaaraa |

They bark themselves to death; they bark and bark and howl in fear.

ਮਨਿ ਤਨਿ ਝੂਠੇ ਕੂੜੁ ਕਮਾਵਹਿ ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਦਰਗਹ ਹਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੫॥
man tan jhootthe koorr kamaaveh duramat daragah haaraa he |15|

False in mind and body, they practice falsehood; through their evil-mindedness, they lose out in the Court of the Lord. ||15||

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਤ ਮਨੂਆ ਟੇਕੈ ॥
satigur milai ta manooaa ttekai |

Meeting the True Guru, the mind is stabilized.

ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਦੇ ਸਰਣਿ ਪਰੇਕੈ ॥
raam naam de saran parekai |

One who seeks His Sanctuary is blessed with the Lord's Name.

ਹਰਿ ਧਨੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਅਮੋਲਕੁ ਦੇਵੈ ਹਰਿ ਜਸੁ ਦਰਗਹ ਪਿਆਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੬॥
har dhan naam amolak devai har jas daragah piaaraa he |16|

They are given the priceless wealth of the Lord's Name; singing His Praises, they are His beloveds in His court. ||16||
