ਏਕਸੁ ਚਰਣੀ ਜੇ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਵਹਿ ਲਬਿ ਲੋਭਿ ਕੀ ਧਾਵਸਿਤਾ ॥੩॥
ekas charanee je chit laaveh lab lobh kee dhaavasitaa |3|

If you focus your consciousness on the Feet of the One Lord, what reason would you have to chase after greed? ||3||

ਜਪਸਿ ਨਿਰੰਜਨੁ ਰਚਸਿ ਮਨਾ ॥
japas niranjan rachas manaa |

Meditate on the Immaculate Lord, and saturate your mind with Him.

ਕਾਹੇ ਬੋਲਹਿ ਜੋਗੀ ਕਪਟੁ ਘਨਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
kaahe boleh jogee kapatt ghanaa |1| rahaau |

Why, O Yogi, do you make so many false and deceptive claims? ||1||Pause||

ਕਾਇਆ ਕਮਲੀ ਹੰਸੁ ਇਆਣਾ ਮੇਰੀ ਮੇਰੀ ਕਰਤ ਬਿਹਾਣੀਤਾ ॥
kaaeaa kamalee hans eaanaa meree meree karat bihaaneetaa |

The body is wild, and the mind is foolish. Practicing egotism, selfishness and conceit, your life is passing away.

ਪ੍ਰਣਵਤਿ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਨਾਗੀ ਦਾਝੈ ਫਿਰਿ ਪਾਛੈ ਪਛੁਤਾਣੀਤਾ ॥੪॥੩॥੧੫॥
pranavat naanak naagee daajhai fir paachhai pachhutaaneetaa |4|3|15|

Prays Nanak, when the naked body is cremated, then you will come to regret and repent. ||4||3||15||

Gauree Chaytee, First Mehl:

ਅਉਖਧ ਮੰਤ੍ਰ ਮੂਲੁ ਮਨ ਏਕੈ ਜੇ ਕਰਿ ਦ੍ਰਿੜੁ ਚਿਤੁ ਕੀਜੈ ਰੇ ॥
aaukhadh mantr mool man ekai je kar drirr chit keejai re |

O mind, there is only the One medicine, mantra and healing herb - center your consciousness firmly on the One Lord.

ਜਨਮ ਜਨਮ ਕੇ ਪਾਪ ਕਰਮ ਕੇ ਕਾਟਨਹਾਰਾ ਲੀਜੈ ਰੇ ॥੧॥
janam janam ke paap karam ke kaattanahaaraa leejai re |1|

Take to the Lord, the Destroyer of the sins and karma of past incarnations. ||1||

ਮਨ ਏਕੋ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਭਾਈ ਰੇ ॥
man eko saahib bhaaee re |

The One Lord and Master is pleasing to my mind.

ਤੇਰੇ ਤੀਨਿ ਗੁਣਾ ਸੰਸਾਰਿ ਸਮਾਵਹਿ ਅਲਖੁ ਨ ਲਖਣਾ ਜਾਈ ਰੇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
tere teen gunaa sansaar samaaveh alakh na lakhanaa jaaee re |1| rahaau |

In Your three qualities, the world is engrossed; the Unknowable cannot be known. ||1||Pause||

ਸਕਰ ਖੰਡੁ ਮਾਇਆ ਤਨਿ ਮੀਠੀ ਹਮ ਤਉ ਪੰਡ ਉਚਾਈ ਰੇ ॥
sakar khandd maaeaa tan meetthee ham tau pandd uchaaee re |

Maya is so sweet to the body, like sugar or molasses. We all carry loads of it.

ਰਾਤਿ ਅਨੇਰੀ ਸੂਝਸਿ ਨਾਹੀ ਲਜੁ ਟੂਕਸਿ ਮੂਸਾ ਭਾਈ ਰੇ ॥੨॥
raat aneree soojhas naahee laj ttookas moosaa bhaaee re |2|

In the dark of the night, nothing can be seen. The mouse of death is gnawing away at the rope of life, O Siblings of Destiny! ||2||

ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਕਰਹਿ ਤੇਤਾ ਦੁਖੁ ਲਾਗੈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਮਿਲੈ ਵਡਾਈ ਰੇ ॥
manamukh kareh tetaa dukh laagai guramukh milai vaddaaee re |

As the self-willed manmukhs act, they suffer in pain. The Gurmukh obtains honor and greatness.

ਜੋ ਤਿਨਿ ਕੀਆ ਸੋਈ ਹੋਆ ਕਿਰਤੁ ਨ ਮੇਟਿਆ ਜਾਈ ਰੇ ॥੩॥
jo tin keea soee hoaa kirat na mettiaa jaaee re |3|

Whatever He does, that alone happens; past actions cannot be erased. ||3||

ਸੁਭਰ ਭਰੇ ਨ ਹੋਵਹਿ ਊਣੇ ਜੋ ਰਾਤੇ ਰੰਗੁ ਲਾਈ ਰੇ ॥
subhar bhare na hoveh aoone jo raate rang laaee re |

Those who are imbued with, and committed to the Lord's Love, are filled to overflowing; they never lack anything.

ਤਿਨ ਕੀ ਪੰਕ ਹੋਵੈ ਜੇ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਤਉ ਮੂੜਾ ਕਿਛੁ ਪਾਈ ਰੇ ॥੪॥੪॥੧੬॥
tin kee pank hovai je naanak tau moorraa kichh paaee re |4|4|16|

If Nanak could be the dust of their feet, then he, the ignorant one, might also obtain some. ||4||4||16||

ਗਉੜੀ ਚੇਤੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥
gaurree chetee mahalaa 1 |

Gauree Chaytee, First Mehl:

ਕਤ ਕੀ ਮਾਈ ਬਾਪੁ ਕਤ ਕੇਰਾ ਕਿਦੂ ਥਾਵਹੁ ਹਮ ਆਏ ॥
kat kee maaee baap kat keraa kidoo thaavahu ham aae |

Who is our mother, and who is our father? Where did we come from?

ਅਗਨਿ ਬਿੰਬ ਜਲ ਭੀਤਰਿ ਨਿਪਜੇ ਕਾਹੇ ਕੰਮਿ ਉਪਾਏ ॥੧॥
agan binb jal bheetar nipaje kaahe kam upaae |1|

We are formed from the fire of the womb within, and the bubble of water of the sperm. For what purpose are we created? ||1||

ਮੇਰੇ ਸਾਹਿਬਾ ਕਉਣੁ ਜਾਣੈ ਗੁਣ ਤੇਰੇ ॥
mere saahibaa kaun jaanai gun tere |

O my Master, who can know Your Glorious Virtues?

ਕਹੇ ਨ ਜਾਨੀ ਅਉਗਣ ਮੇਰੇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
kahe na jaanee aaugan mere |1| rahaau |

My own demerits cannot be counted. ||1||Pause||

ਕੇਤੇ ਰੁਖ ਬਿਰਖ ਹਮ ਚੀਨੇ ਕੇਤੇ ਪਸੂ ਉਪਾਏ ॥
kete rukh birakh ham cheene kete pasoo upaae |

I took the form of so many plants and trees, and so many animals.

ਕੇਤੇ ਨਾਗ ਕੁਲੀ ਮਹਿ ਆਏ ਕੇਤੇ ਪੰਖ ਉਡਾਏ ॥੨॥
kete naag kulee meh aae kete pankh uddaae |2|

Many times I entered the families of snakes and flying birds. ||2||

ਹਟ ਪਟਣ ਬਿਜ ਮੰਦਰ ਭੰਨੈ ਕਰਿ ਚੋਰੀ ਘਰਿ ਆਵੈ ॥
hatt pattan bij mandar bhanai kar choree ghar aavai |

I broke into the shops of the city and well-guarded palaces; stealing from them, I snuck home again.

ਅਗਹੁ ਦੇਖੈ ਪਿਛਹੁ ਦੇਖੈ ਤੁਝ ਤੇ ਕਹਾ ਛਪਾਵੈ ॥੩॥
agahu dekhai pichhahu dekhai tujh te kahaa chhapaavai |3|

I looked in front of me, and I looked behind me, but where could I hide from You? ||3||

ਤਟ ਤੀਰਥ ਹਮ ਨਵ ਖੰਡ ਦੇਖੇ ਹਟ ਪਟਣ ਬਾਜਾਰਾ ॥
tatt teerath ham nav khandd dekhe hatt pattan baajaaraa |

I saw the banks of sacred rivers, the nine continents, the shops and bazaars of the cities.

ਲੈ ਕੈ ਤਕੜੀ ਤੋਲਣਿ ਲਾਗਾ ਘਟ ਹੀ ਮਹਿ ਵਣਜਾਰਾ ॥੪॥
lai kai takarree tolan laagaa ghatt hee meh vanajaaraa |4|

Taking the scale, the merchant begins to weigh his actions within his own heart. ||4||

ਜੇਤਾ ਸਮੁੰਦੁ ਸਾਗਰੁ ਨੀਰਿ ਭਰਿਆ ਤੇਤੇ ਅਉਗਣ ਹਮਾਰੇ ॥
jetaa samund saagar neer bhariaa tete aaugan hamaare |

As the seas and the oceans are overflowing with water, so vast are my own sins.

ਦਇਆ ਕਰਹੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਮਿਹਰ ਉਪਾਵਹੁ ਡੁਬਦੇ ਪਥਰ ਤਾਰੇ ॥੫॥
deaa karahu kichh mihar upaavahu ddubade pathar taare |5|

Please, shower me with Your Mercy, and take pity upon me. I am a sinking stone - please carry me across! ||5||

ਜੀਅੜਾ ਅਗਨਿ ਬਰਾਬਰਿ ਤਪੈ ਭੀਤਰਿ ਵਗੈ ਕਾਤੀ ॥
jeearraa agan baraabar tapai bheetar vagai kaatee |

My soul is burning like fire, and the knife is cutting deep.

ਪ੍ਰਣਵਤਿ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਪਛਾਣੈ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਦਿਨੁ ਰਾਤੀ ॥੬॥੫॥੧੭॥
pranavat naanak hukam pachhaanai sukh hovai din raatee |6|5|17|

Prays Nanak, recognizing the Lord's Command, I am at peace, day and night. ||6||5||17||

ਗਉੜੀ ਬੈਰਾਗਣਿ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥
gaurree bairaagan mahalaa 1 |

Gauree Bairaagan, First Mehl:

ਰੈਣਿ ਗਵਾਈ ਸੋਇ ਕੈ ਦਿਵਸੁ ਗਵਾਇਆ ਖਾਇ ॥
rain gavaaee soe kai divas gavaaeaa khaae |

The nights are wasted sleeping, and the days are wasted eating.

ਹੀਰੇ ਜੈਸਾ ਜਨਮੁ ਹੈ ਕਉਡੀ ਬਦਲੇ ਜਾਇ ॥੧॥
heere jaisaa janam hai kauddee badale jaae |1|

Human life is such a precious jewel, but it is being lost in exchange for a mere shell. ||1||

ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਜਾਨਿਆ ਰਾਮ ਕਾ ॥
naam na jaaniaa raam kaa |

You do not know the Name of the Lord.

ਮੂੜੇ ਫਿਰਿ ਪਾਛੈ ਪਛੁਤਾਹਿ ਰੇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
moorre fir paachhai pachhutaeh re |1| rahaau |

You fool - you shall regret and repent in the end! ||1||Pause||

ਅਨਤਾ ਧਨੁ ਧਰਣੀ ਧਰੇ ਅਨਤ ਨ ਚਾਹਿਆ ਜਾਇ ॥
anataa dhan dharanee dhare anat na chaahiaa jaae |

You bury your temporary wealth in the ground, but how can you love that which is temporary?

ਅਨਤ ਕਉ ਚਾਹਨ ਜੋ ਗਏ ਸੇ ਆਏ ਅਨਤ ਗਵਾਇ ॥੨॥
anat kau chaahan jo ge se aae anat gavaae |2|

Those who have departed, after craving for temporary wealth, have returned home without this temporary wealth. ||2||

ਆਪਣ ਲੀਆ ਜੇ ਮਿਲੈ ਤਾ ਸਭੁ ਕੋ ਭਾਗਠੁ ਹੋਇ ॥
aapan leea je milai taa sabh ko bhaagatth hoe |

If people could gather it in by their own efforts, then everyone would be so lucky.
