ਸੀਤਾ ਲਖਮਣੁ ਵਿਛੁੜਿ ਗਇਆ ॥
seetaa lakhaman vichhurr geaa |

and separated from Sita and Lakhshman.

ਰੋਵੈ ਦਹਸਿਰੁ ਲੰਕ ਗਵਾਇ ॥
rovai dahasir lank gavaae |

The ten-headed Raawan, who stole away Sita with the beat of his tambourine,

ਜਿਨਿ ਸੀਤਾ ਆਦੀ ਡਉਰੂ ਵਾਇ ॥
jin seetaa aadee ddauroo vaae |

Wept when he lost Sri Lanka.

ਰੋਵਹਿ ਪਾਂਡਵ ਭਏ ਮਜੂਰ ॥
roveh paanddav bhe majoor |

The Paandavas once lived in the Presence of the Lord;

ਜਿਨ ਕੈ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਰਹਤ ਹਦੂਰਿ ॥
jin kai suaamee rahat hadoor |

They were made slaves, and wept.

ਰੋਵੈ ਜਨਮੇਜਾ ਖੁਇ ਗਇਆ ॥
rovai janamejaa khue geaa |

Janmayjaa wept, that he had lost his way.

ਏਕੀ ਕਾਰਣਿ ਪਾਪੀ ਭਇਆ ॥
ekee kaaran paapee bheaa |

One mistake, and he became a sinner.

ਰੋਵਹਿ ਸੇਖ ਮਸਾਇਕ ਪੀਰ ॥
roveh sekh masaaeik peer |

The Shaykhs, Pirs and spiritual teachers weep;

ਅੰਤਿ ਕਾਲਿ ਮਤੁ ਲਾਗੈ ਭੀੜ ॥
ant kaal mat laagai bheerr |

at the very last instant, they suffer in agony.

ਰੋਵਹਿ ਰਾਜੇ ਕੰਨ ਪੜਾਇ ॥
roveh raaje kan parraae |

The kings weep - their ears are cut;

ਘਰਿ ਘਰਿ ਮਾਗਹਿ ਭੀਖਿਆ ਜਾਇ ॥
ghar ghar maageh bheekhiaa jaae |

they go begging from house to house.

ਰੋਵਹਿ ਕਿਰਪਨ ਸੰਚਹਿ ਧਨੁ ਜਾਇ ॥
roveh kirapan sancheh dhan jaae |

The miser weeps; he has to leave behind the wealth he has gathered.

ਪੰਡਿਤ ਰੋਵਹਿ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਗਵਾਇ ॥
panddit roveh giaan gavaae |

The Pandit, the religious scholar, weeps when his learning is gone.

ਬਾਲੀ ਰੋਵੈ ਨਾਹਿ ਭਤਾਰੁ ॥
baalee rovai naeh bhataar |

The young woman weeps because she has no husband.

ਨਾਨਕ ਦੁਖੀਆ ਸਭੁ ਸੰਸਾਰੁ ॥
naanak dukheea sabh sansaar |

O Nanak, the whole world is suffering.

ਮੰਨੇ ਨਾਉ ਸੋਈ ਜਿਣਿ ਜਾਇ ॥
mane naau soee jin jaae |

He alone is victorious, who believes in the Lord's Name.

ਅਉਰੀ ਕਰਮ ਨ ਲੇਖੈ ਲਾਇ ॥੧॥
aauree karam na lekhai laae |1|

No other action is of any account. ||1||

Second Mehl:

ਜਪੁ ਤਪੁ ਸਭੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਮੰਨਿਐ ਅਵਰਿ ਕਾਰਾ ਸਭਿ ਬਾਦਿ ॥
jap tap sabh kichh maniaai avar kaaraa sabh baad |

Meditation, austerity and everything come through belief in the Lord's Name. All other actions are useless.

ਨਾਨਕ ਮੰਨਿਆ ਮੰਨੀਐ ਬੁਝੀਐ ਗੁਰਪਰਸਾਦਿ ॥੨॥
naanak maniaa maneeai bujheeai guraparasaad |2|

O Nanak, believe in the One who is worth believing in. By Guru's Grace, he is realized. ||2||

ਪਉੜੀ ॥

Pauree:

ਕਾਇਆ ਹੰਸ ਧੁਰਿ ਮੇਲੁ ਕਰਤੈ ਲਿਖਿ ਪਾਇਆ ॥
kaaeaa hans dhur mel karatai likh paaeaa |

The union of the body and the soul-swan was pre-ordained by the Creator Lord.

ਸਭ ਮਹਿ ਗੁਪਤੁ ਵਰਤਦਾ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪ੍ਰਗਟਾਇਆ ॥
sabh meh gupat varatadaa guramukh pragattaaeaa |

He is hidden, and yet pervading all. He is revealed to the Gurmukh.

ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵੈ ਗੁਣ ਉਚਰੈ ਗੁਣ ਮਾਹਿ ਸਮਾਇਆ ॥
gun gaavai gun ucharai gun maeh samaaeaa |

Singing the Glorious Praises of the Lord, and chanting His Praises, one merges in His Glories.

ਸਚੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਸਚੁ ਹੈ ਸਚੁ ਮੇਲਿ ਮਿਲਾਇਆ ॥
sachee baanee sach hai sach mel milaaeaa |

True is the True Word of the Guru's Bani. One unites in Union with the True Lord.

ਸਭੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਆਪੇ ਆਪਿ ਹੈ ਆਪੇ ਦੇਇ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥੧੪॥
sabh kichh aape aap hai aape dee vaddiaaee |14|

He Himself is everything; He Himself grants glorious greatness. ||14||

ਸਲੋਕ ਮਃ ੨ ॥
salok mahalaa 2 |

Salok, Second Mehl:

ਨਾਨਕ ਅੰਧਾ ਹੋਇ ਕੈ ਰਤਨਾ ਪਰਖਣ ਜਾਇ ॥
naanak andhaa hoe kai ratanaa parakhan jaae |

O Nanak, the blind man may go to appraise the jewels,

ਰਤਨਾ ਸਾਰ ਨ ਜਾਣਈ ਆਵੈ ਆਪੁ ਲਖਾਇ ॥੧॥
ratanaa saar na jaanee aavai aap lakhaae |1|

but he will not know their value; he will return home after exposing his ignorance. ||1||

Second Mehl:

ਰਤਨਾ ਕੇਰੀ ਗੁਥਲੀ ਰਤਨੀ ਖੋਲੀ ਆਇ ॥
ratanaa keree guthalee ratanee kholee aae |

The Jeweller has come, and opened up the bag of jewels.

ਵਖਰ ਤੈ ਵਣਜਾਰਿਆ ਦੁਹਾ ਰਹੀ ਸਮਾਇ ॥
vakhar tai vanajaariaa duhaa rahee samaae |

The merchandise and the merchant are merged together.

ਜਿਨ ਗੁਣੁ ਪਲੈ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਮਾਣਕ ਵਣਜਹਿ ਸੇਇ ॥
jin gun palai naanakaa maanak vanajeh see |

They alone purchase the gem, O Nanak, who have virtue in their purse.

ਰਤਨਾ ਸਾਰ ਨ ਜਾਣਨੀ ਅੰਧੇ ਵਤਹਿ ਲੋਇ ॥੨॥
ratanaa saar na jaananee andhe vateh loe |2|

Those who do not appreciate the value of the jewels, wander like blind men in the world. ||2||

ਪਉੜੀ ॥

Pauree:

ਨਉ ਦਰਵਾਜੇ ਕਾਇਆ ਕੋਟੁ ਹੈ ਦਸਵੈ ਗੁਪਤੁ ਰਖੀਜੈ ॥
nau daravaaje kaaeaa kott hai dasavai gupat rakheejai |

The fortress of the body has nine gates; the tenth gate is kept hidden.

ਬਜਰ ਕਪਾਟ ਨ ਖੁਲਨੀ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦਿ ਖੁਲੀਜੈ ॥
bajar kapaatt na khulanee gur sabad khuleejai |

The rigid door is not open; only through the Word of the Guru's Shabad can it be opened.

ਅਨਹਦ ਵਾਜੇ ਧੁਨਿ ਵਜਦੇ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦਿ ਸੁਣੀਜੈ ॥
anahad vaaje dhun vajade gur sabad suneejai |

The unstruck sound current resounds and vibrates there. The Word of the Guru's Shabad is heard.

ਤਿਤੁ ਘਟ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਚਾਨਣਾ ਕਰਿ ਭਗਤਿ ਮਿਲੀਜੈ ॥
tit ghatt antar chaananaa kar bhagat mileejai |

Deep within the nucleus of the heart, the Divine Light shines forth. Through devotional worship, one meets the Lord.

ਸਭ ਮਹਿ ਏਕੁ ਵਰਤਦਾ ਜਿਨਿ ਆਪੇ ਰਚਨ ਰਚਾਈ ॥੧੫॥
sabh meh ek varatadaa jin aape rachan rachaaee |15|

The One Lord is pervading and permeating all. He Himself created the creation. ||15||

ਸਲੋਕ ਮਃ ੨ ॥
salok mahalaa 2 |

Salok, Second Mehl:

ਅੰਧੇ ਕੈ ਰਾਹਿ ਦਸਿਐ ਅੰਧਾ ਹੋਇ ਸੁ ਜਾਇ ॥
andhe kai raeh dasiaai andhaa hoe su jaae |

He is truly blind, who follows the way shown by the blind man.

ਹੋਇ ਸੁਜਾਖਾ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਸੋ ਕਿਉ ਉਝੜਿ ਪਾਇ ॥
hoe sujaakhaa naanakaa so kiau ujharr paae |

O Nanak, why should the one who can see, get lost?

ਅੰਧੇ ਏਹਿ ਨ ਆਖੀਅਨਿ ਜਿਨ ਮੁਖਿ ਲੋਇਣ ਨਾਹਿ ॥
andhe ehi na aakheean jin mukh loein naeh |

Do not call them blind, who have no eyes in their face.

ਅੰਧੇ ਸੇਈ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਖਸਮਹੁ ਘੁਥੇ ਜਾਹਿ ॥੧॥
andhe seee naanakaa khasamahu ghuthe jaeh |1|

They alone are blind, O Nanak, who wander away from their Lord and Master. ||1||

Second Mehl:

ਸਾਹਿਬਿ ਅੰਧਾ ਜੋ ਕੀਆ ਕਰੇ ਸੁਜਾਖਾ ਹੋਇ ॥
saahib andhaa jo keea kare sujaakhaa hoe |

One whom the Lord has made blind - the Lord can make him see again.

ਜੇਹਾ ਜਾਣੈ ਤੇਹੋ ਵਰਤੈ ਜੇ ਸਉ ਆਖੈ ਕੋਇ ॥
jehaa jaanai teho varatai je sau aakhai koe |

He acts only as he knows, although he may be spoken to a hundred times.

ਜਿਥੈ ਸੁ ਵਸਤੁ ਨ ਜਾਪਈ ਆਪੇ ਵਰਤਉ ਜਾਣਿ ॥
jithai su vasat na jaapee aape vartau jaan |

Where the real thing is not seen, self-conceit prevails there - know this well.

ਨਾਨਕ ਗਾਹਕੁ ਕਿਉ ਲਏ ਸਕੈ ਨ ਵਸਤੁ ਪਛਾਣਿ ॥੨॥
naanak gaahak kiau le sakai na vasat pachhaan |2|

O Nanak, how can the purshaser purchase the real thing, if he cannot recognize it? ||2||

Second Mehl:

ਸੋ ਕਿਉ ਅੰਧਾ ਆਖੀਐ ਜਿ ਹੁਕਮਹੁ ਅੰਧਾ ਹੋਇ ॥
so kiau andhaa aakheeai ji hukamahu andhaa hoe |

How can someone be called blind, if he was made blind by the Lord's Command?

ਨਾਨਕ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਨ ਬੁਝਈ ਅੰਧਾ ਕਹੀਐ ਸੋਇ ॥੩॥
naanak hukam na bujhee andhaa kaheeai soe |3|

O Nanak, one who does not understand the Hukam of the Lord's Command should be called blind. ||3||
