ਮੀਨ ਕਉ ਨ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਜਲ ਕਉ ਸਬਦ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਦੁਬਿਧਾ ਮਿਟਾਇ ਨ ਸਕਤ ਜਲੁ ਮੀਨ ਕੀ ।
meen kau na surat jal kau sabad giaan dubidhaa mittaae na sakat jal meen kee |

A fish is not a ware that the water will assist nor does water have knowledge of speech or hearing in order to help the fish in distress. Therefore the water cannot allay its pain while it is in distress.

ਸਰ ਸਰਿਤਾ ਅਥਾਹ ਪ੍ਰਬਲ ਪ੍ਰਵਾਹ ਬਸੈ ਗ੍ਰਸੈ ਲੋਹ ਰਾਖਿ ਨ ਸਕਤ ਮਤਿ ਹੀਨ ਕੀ ।
sar saritaa athaah prabal pravaah basai grasai loh raakh na sakat mat heen kee |

Fish resides in the vast and rapid flow of the river. But when it swallows the iron bait of an angler, the bemused fish cannot be saved by water-her beloved.

ਜਲੁ ਬਿਨੁ ਤਰਫਿ ਤਜਤ ਪ੍ਰਿਅ ਪ੍ਰਾਨ ਮੀਨ ਜਾਨਤ ਨ ਪੀਰ ਨੀਰ ਦੀਨਤਾਈ ਦੀਨ ਕੀ ।
jal bin taraf tajat pria praan meen jaanat na peer neer deenataaee deen kee |

Removed from water, a fish writhes in pain for life having been separated from its beloved (life support). But the water is not aware of the sufferings of the fish.
